IPod Doesn't Unmount

Hello,
I've had my new MacBook Pro for awhile now (I upgraded from my PB G4), and I have a consistant problem with my iPods not unmounting after they update. I have my iTunes set so that they automatically update when connected, and none of them are set into disk mode or anything like that. What happens is that, I would say 9 times out of 10, iTunes will display "iPod update is complete," but the blinking "no" symbol stays on my iPod, and it stays on my desktop. I can drag them to the trash and eject tehm, but that isn't what is supposed to happen! This happens if I have only one iPod connected, or all of them. Any help would be greatly apprectiated!
P.S. Permission have been repaired, cron scripts run, etc.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.16 GHz, 100GB, 1GB RAM,

this is probably not going to be much consolation... but i'm experiencing exactly the same problem.
the difference for me is that i've had the ipod (80g) for 2 months now and until this week it worked fine.. no, it hasn't been dropped, or submerged in a pint of beer or anything like that.
i've tried numerous times to reset it and re-sync with itunes... but it seems to fail at random points throughout the process.. sometimes within the first 50 tracks, and then other times - the most gutting - around 90% done.
last night i did a surface scan of it.. no bad blocks found.. i formatted it with the zero blocks setting... and still it comes up with that error when syncing.
i'm basically running out of ideas... my next test will be to try it without the dock and using a different cable...
i purchased my ipod from an online retailer... as i say, it's been less than 3 months.. can i take it in to apple under warranty? what's the time limit? (it says 1 year for all apple hardware on the apple site - that must apply to ipods?)

  • Apple logo comes up but ipod doesn't start

When I turn on the device the Apple logo comes up but the ipod doesn't start and go to the menus it just stays with the logo. When I hold down the play/pause on the click wheel to put it to sleep a symbol of a triangle with an exclamation point in the center comes up along with "www.apple.com/support/ipod." I tried rebooting it with Menu/select but nothing happens.

Unfortunately, on a "classic" iPod that uses a hard drive for storage, the most likely cause is a faulty hard drive.
You can try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If that works, connect it to the computer and run iTunes.  iTunes may prompt you to do a Restore.  This will erase the iPod, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  If the cause is data corruption or a software issue (and the hard drive has no physical problem), the Restore should fix it.

  • Since itunes 2.0.4 has been downloaded. My ipod doesn't synchronize properly/ at all.The LED screen shows  "copy 1 or 2 from 101" and it will remain like that. It looks like sync but there's nothing to happen. It doesn't stop by it self. How to solve?

Since itunes 2.0.4 has been downloaded my ipod doesn't synchronize properly/ at all. The LED screen shows çopying 1 or 2 from 101' and itt will remain like that.
It looks like sync but nothing is happening. The sync doesn't stop by itself. Is there anybody to solve this problem? In previous versions never a problem.

I have exactly the same issues with my new 80G iPOD. I have found that when connecting to my PC, the iPOD does not start iTUNES 7. This can be resolved by stopping the iPOD Service in Computer Management, connecting the iPOD and then starting it again. Then when you start iTUNES it finds the iPOD. - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Seems like a stupid long-winded way to do things, but at least you can get some stuff on to your iPOD.
As far as using Restore goes - I just get the restoring iPOD message you described, which it blatantly isn't :((

  • IPod doesn't sync with iTunes at all...

I'm having trouble with my iPod is because it does not sync with the computer. I assume the iPod doesn't recognize it somehow. I've tried to manually manage music and videos but when it told me to disconnect, the box was not checked. Awhile back, I deleted some music from the MY MUSIC folder, the folder was too full of music that it deleted all of my music, (including videos). My only concern is that my iPod has stopped syncing to the computer ever since this incident occurred. If you can, please share what needs to be done in order for my iPod to sync properly and gain all the songs and videos I had added after losing EVERYTHING Thank you.

I think I know the problem and it's solution. The iPod "thinks" it's linked to a different library and therefore does not synchronize. No idea what happens in the background there, but here is what I did:
First, I went back to the previous update on the iPod (not sure if that's necessary at all, but I just wanted to go to where I started from.
The UNinstalled iTunes (to be safe I backed up my tunes) and reinstalled it. Then pasted backed up tunes into new iTunes music folder and overwrote newly created iTunes library files.
Then I connected the iPod, which now told me that I had an old version and needed to update, which I did.
Then a window popped up and told me that my iPod was connected to a different library and if I want to connect to this one, overwriting everything on the iPod, which I said yes to (it didn't matter anyway, since it was now empty after the RESTORE I had done).
iPod then downloaded all the songs from my library again and we are as happy together as we've been before
I think what happened was that after installing the latest update, that window with the "different library connection" had popped up as well and I must have clicked NO because of the "overwrite" comment which scared me. Unfortunately, even with "reset warnings" it then never popped up again and until I reinstalled iTunes.
    Hope this helps!

You cannot update it if you can't get the latest version of iTunes. Actually, the latest version of iTunes will run in XP if you have Service Pack 2. Also, you posted in the iPad forum, and your profile shows you have an iPad, but in your post, you say it is an iPod. Is it an iPad or an iPod?

  • IPod doesn't sync with iTunes anymore!! HELP!!

I am in complete despair - my iPod doesn't sync with iTunes anymore. It all started a couple of days ago, after installing the latest updates of both, iTunes and iPod. After that, I noticed that the iPod wasn't synching the changes and new additions I had made in iTunes.
I tried everything so far with no success. I did reset the iPOd, reinstalled the iPod updater, than did a RESTORE and now my iPod is completely empty, but refuses to download my music from iTunes.
When connected, it shows up, start "updating iPod" and several seconds later shows "update complete". In the iPod window I can all the songs (in grey) from my library, but they are not being transferred to my iPod!!!
    Please, help!!

  • 5th gen iPod will not unmount

I have a 5th gen iPod which I use to backup other data files. The iPod setting within iTunes allow for desktop mounting of the iPod. When I attempt to unmount the iPod from the desktop (with iTunes closed) and only the finder (and dashboard) running, I get a message indicating that the iPod cannot be unmounted because it contains files that are still in use. As mentioned above, the only applications running are the Dashboard and Finder. I do have one widget that displayes hard disk usage information, and I have used the Activity Monitor to quit the process just before attempting to unmount the iPod but the unmount status does not change. Is there something else that I should be disabling before attempting to unmount the iPod?
Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iPod 5th gen, iPod nano

I can't really explain why but sometimes it happens, to mine too, normally if you try unmounting again it should unmount, if not, the next time you have your iPod mounted on your desktop, do a Repair Permission from Disk Utility (Repair Permission on your main HD, not your iPod)
After that restart again, your problem should go away.
    Cheers

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
