Ipod Mini has unhappy icon with an exclamation mark

When I turn on my Ipod mini I get an unhappy icon with an exclamation mark. I attempted to restore my mini, but then my computer doesn't recognize the ipod when i plug it into the USB port. What can I do?
I have a dell dimension E310.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I know ,ive read & tried the 5Rs posted on web but it just don't seems to work.
I keep having this icon even when i plugged onto the USB,there's no response at all EVEN when i open the iPod Updater 2006-01-10 to restore factory settings..Why???????
I thought maybe my batt is dead flat,tried to charge but i don't see any battery charging sign...IT'S STILL THAT ICON!!!
I'm kinda freak out..Can anybody help me out??
Think the last & only option is to send it back to apple shop to troubleshoot.....

I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. IPod Mini and Folder Icon with ! on Startup

I upgraded to ITunes 7.0, and like a lot of people, had problems getting my Mini out of recovery mode. So I deleted 7.0, reinstalled 6.0.5, restored my Mini and transferred my library, and everything seemed to be working until I disconnected my Mini. My Mini booted up then froze up on that darned Folder icon with the "www.apple.com/ipod/support" url underneath it. Windows XP is only recognizing my Mini as a USB Mass Storage Device. ITunes recognizes it and can even play mp3s off of it. I tried restoring my Mini again and resynced it only to have it come out with the same problem.
Any ideas on what's going on? How should I fix this?

Connect your iPod and wait for it to appear in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the source pane
Under the "summary" tab, select the option to "enable disk use"
Click Apply (lower right-hand corner)
Exit iTunes (don't eject the iPod first)
Click on Start, right click on MyComputer, and click Manage
Click on Disk Management in the left-hand side
Wait for it to finish connecting (it might take a few minutes)
You'll see your iPod listed under your main hard drive. If it's a 4GB iPod Mini, it will show a capacity of about 3.72GB
Make SURE you've found the iPod
Right click on it and click format
Set the options as follows:
*Volume Label = iPod
*File System = FAT32
*Allocation unit size = default
Leave "quickformat" unchecked, and click OK to start the format.
This may take a little while to complete
If it doesn't complete successfully, try it a second time.
If it does complete successfully (first or second attempt) go back to iTunes and restore it again.
Also, make sure you're not unplugging the iPod while it has "do not disconnect" on the screen.

2nd Generation Touch Wheel iPod - iPod displays a folder icon with a ! mark

Hi,
My girlfriend has been using my old 2nd generation touch wheel iPod, and yesterday she was trying to listen to some music, and the iPod would load the name of the song, artist, album etc, and then skip to the next song without playing any music, and would keep skipping to the next song over and over and over.
My girlfriend showed me this with an album that she had recently just added to the iPod, from a CD that she purchased and ripped to mp3's using iTunes, so initially I thought maybe it was just a problem that occurred when the CD was being ripped, so some corrupt mp3's or something. However we tried a range of other songs on the iPod and the same problem occurred.
So I figured something must have gone array with the firmware on the iPod, and thought maybe the problem might be solved by resetting the iPod, which I did by holding down the menu and play / pause button until the iPod reset.
When the iPod reset, the apple logo came up on screen and interchanged between the apple logo and the folder with a ! mark icon. When I connected the iPod to the computer, iTunes wouldn't find it, and the screen on the iPod said it was in disk mode.
Listening to the iPod I could hear the disk spinning, and then make a click sound, and then repeat, and it is not possible to turn it off.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what has caused the problem, and more importantly how it can be fixed?

Ipod mini minus/plus icon on screen

My iPod mini has an icon that is a double -/+ right under the battery. should I worry about it? Otherwise it is playing normally. Does it have anything to do with static electricty?

Since I always ignore instruction booklets with new devices, I failed to notice the warnings with regard to configuring my iPod mini on a Windows PC. I did not install the included software first and I tried to sync with iTunes (my girlfriend already has an iPod mini so iTunes was already installed). As a result I ended up with folder exclamation point icon.
I tried the folowing already:
1) Reformatting the disk through windows explorer
2) Reset:
The folder icon with exclamtion point appears after reset
3) Running Updater 2004-04-28:
After plugging in the iPod at the prompt, the message "iPod updater can;t install firmware on connected iPod. The iPods hardware and the updater firmware are not compatible." I got the same message when doing the same thing in 'disk mode'.
4) Running the software on the disc that came with it:
When prompted I connected the iPod to the PC. I get a message "Your iPod has been connected. Please wait while the system recognises the device". And then nothing happens.
Please can anyone advise me how to fix this problem?

I turned on the iPod updater.
When it said i had to connect my iPod I did it
Then I pressed RESTORE
After that I plug it in the A/C adapter
It worked
I connected the iPod to the computer again
iTunes worked and my iPod is working as a new one!!

I can't restore the I Pod or reset it as they first told on the support web site, because it only appears that message...
I installed the latest version of the iPod updater and it didn't work also.
When I go to the iPod updater it gives me the "iPod service error" message.
What must I do!

Folder icon with an exclamation point

My ipod told me I had a corrupt disk so I restored it. I then tried to sync it with my itunes library but after a while it said "The iPod (my name) cannot be synced. The required file (or disk) cannot be found." And then it says the sync is finished. When I look at my iPod, only a few of my songs appear as opposed to the number that it got to when syncing. I then tried restoring it again but the computer now freezes and doesn't find the ipod and only unfreezes when the ipod is unplugged. Occasionally itunes comes up with a message about my ipod being corrupt and needs to be restored even when the ipod isn't plugged in. Now the folder icon with an exclamation point has come up on my screen, and it will not connect to the computer at all. I have tried putting it into disk mode but it still doesn't work. does this mean that I have no hope and I will have to buy a new one??

I have tried all of those. when i even tried to
restore factory settings, it said ipod manager
internal error. what is that? and one other thing i
noticed, the lock symbol that appears when you slide
the hold button appers at the bottom of the computer
screen when my ipod is attached, I guess suggesting
that it is locked, but when i toggle it on the ipod
itself it appears and disappers as indicated. this

iPod Manager Internal Error deals with the software versions you have on your computer. One of them might be out of date. Make sure you have iTunes 6.0.4 (open iTunes, click on Help, click on About iTunes. The version is the top line of the gray text that scrolls up). Then make sure you have iPod Updater 2006-03-23.
If you need to update iTunes you can get it at

If you find that your software is all up to date, try just restarting your computer, and then restoring again. (If you have your iPod in disk mode, you should disconnect it before you restart your computer).
If that doesn't work, just uninstall and reinstall iTunes. This should resolve the iPod Manager Internal Error.
As far as the lock icon goes... I'm not sure about that one. It might have something to do with having the iPod in disk mode, or it might just be acting weird because of what's going on with the iPod right now. As long as it isn't blocking you from trying the steps to fix the iPod, I wouldn't worry too much about it for now. Maybe it'll act normally once you resolve the !folder.

Ipod Mini Beeping, folder icon, battery icon, doesn't work

My iPod mini, has a beeping sound when attached to the USB port and the folder icon keeps coming up, then the Apple logo come up, then the battery icon come up. iTunes cannot see it either.

The screen of a new iPod will have a iTunes and a USB cord icons. To use the iPod you first have to connect the iPod to a computer with an internet connect and which has the latest version of iTunes installed. ITunes will give you instructions after you connect the iPod to the computer.

Hello everyone, this is my first post ever. It's a sad story, actually. I had a beautiful 1st generation iPod touch for about two years ago. Recently, my girlfriend's father managed to water damage my iPod touch, and refuses to replace it. Nice guy, isn't he? I don't have to funds to replace my touch, and I know nobody in the world covers water damage, so I found my old 4GB iPod mini. I want to use it until I can save up for a new however, it's not recognized by iTunes. Windows XP recognizes it as an iPod, but iTunes (9.2.0.61) never recognizes it. I tried using 3rd party programs such as CopyTrans, and CopyTrans diagnosed the issue saying that my iPod mini has no library and thats why it can't be recognized. How do I fix this? Thanks to all for reading and helping!

Have you tried some of the basics yet such as trying a different connector cable or simply plugging the iPod into different ports? Perhaps try and reset the iPod with it connected to your PC. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together until the Apple logo appears. You may want to attempt this a few times for good measure.
If still no luck, try and force the iPod into *Disk Mode*.
