IPod = Musicmatch Transfer

I have two related questions:
1. My old laptop had a capacity of 4 GB, so I had to load my CDs onto the laptop and convert them, manually type in the song title, artist name and CD name, then transfer the songs onto my iPod, then delete the songs again from the laptop. Now I've just bought a new laptop with larger capacity, and I'd like to learn how to transfer the songs from my iPod to it. I've looked through the discussions lists so far and I can't find any advice that relates to doing this transfer with MusicMatch, which is what my iPod came with and I've been using ever since. I'd appreciate any advice!
2. As I said, my iPod came with MusicMatch for Windows and I've been using it ever since. Now it seems everyone's using iTunes for Windows. My questions are: if I download iTunes, can it do everything including the communication / synching with the iPod? Do I need any other pieces of software from the original CD that came with the iPod? Secondly, if there is a way to do the transfer mentioned in question 1, at what stage should I / can I convert to iTunes? Or can I just install iTunes now and do the transfer to the new laptop in the way recommended in other discussion threads?
Hope that was all comprehensible! It's been very frustrating getting a shiny new laptop and learning I may have to re-do hundreds of hours of conversion and typing and transfer work!

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If I download iTunes, can it do everything including the communication / synching with the iPod? Yes, it can.
Do I need any other pieces of software from the original CD that came with the iPod?
No, you do not. But you may need to update the iPod to the latest software using the latest version of the iPod software updater.
Secondly, if there is a way to do the transfer mentioned in question 1, at what stage should I / can I convert to iTunes?
Since you are using Musicmatch, I am not sure if this method: MacMuse, "Computer Crashed" #4, 11:49pm Feb 7, 2005 CDT will work for you. You had better ask this at the iLounge web site first.
Or can I just install iTunes now and do the transfer to the new laptop in the way recommended in other discussion threads?
No, you have to get the songs on the iPod to your new computer first.

  • How can i take the pictures from my old ipod and transfer them onto my computer without deleting anything

How can I take the pics from my old ipod and transfer them onto my computer without deleting anything?

Pictures on an iPod are stored in a special format, optimized for the iPod's small lower resolution screen, to save storage space.  iTunes puts them into that format when syncing.  There is setting in iTunes, on the iPod's Photos screen (where you set up syncing of photos) for Include full resolution photos.  If that checkbox was checked when you synced the photos to the iPod, THEN you can Enable disk use and find those photo files on the iPod in the Photos folder.
Otherwise, you cannot get your photos back, using iTunes.  There may be third-party utilities that can extract individual photos from the iPod, but they will still be lower-resolution versions of the original photo.

  • How do i take the music from my ipod and transfer it permanently onto my PC's itunes?

How do i take the music from my ipod and transfer it permanently onto my PC's itunes?

If you were using a Mac you could use a program but AFAIK there is nothing similar yet for the PC.
However, you should have a backup of your music, correct? Just restore from that backup to your computer (and, if not, at least this will teach you the importance of always backing up your music purchases onto writable media like DVD).

  • Using iPod to transfer photos

I'm using iPod to transfer photos from one Mac to another. They were uploaded from iPhoto 4.03 following directions, and downloaded to the second computer with iPhoto '08 (7.1.5) using iPod as an external drive. However only 23 photos out of hundreds downloaded. I get the message, "The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)." These files are listed:
    /Volumes/name/Photos/Thumbs
    /Volumes/name/Photos/Photo Database
I'm assuming it's the database file that's the problem, but why would some photos download and not the rest? Opening the Photos folder in the iPod icon, there are only two items. The Photo Database is shown as a Unix file. There are only six thumbs in that folder, and they are all Unix as well.
I posted this in iPod discussion, but hoped an iPhoto expert might also help me.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

What's the HD feature? I don't have the iPod synced to iPhoto in the second computer; I have it on Manually manage music and videos.
There's a possibility that it did sync in the first computer before I checked that option, but no photos uploaded until I did it manually, so it doesn't seem so. Also, the icon appeared on the desktop and that doesn't happen if it's synced, does it?
It definitely did not sync in the second one as it was already checked when I connected it.
And I keep going back to, why did some photos import and not the rest?
    Thanks for sticking with me.

I want to use my ipod to transfer music from my hardrive onto my daughters PC (which has no internet access). Sounds simple but I can not seem to do. Any ideas?
      Windows XP Pro

    (1) Plug in the iPod on your computer (USB cable), it should auto detect - look on "My Computer" for a drive with the name of your ipod. (2) Double Click on the drive to open. (3) Create a new folder using Windows (File New Folder). (4) Copy your files from your PC to that folder. (5) Remove the iPod from the source computer.
(6)Plug the iPod in to the other computer. It should auto detect. (7) Open the folder you created. (8) Select all the files (Ctrl A) and copy them (right click) to the desired destination on the 2nd computer.
Hope this helps. It standard windows for copy and paste files.

  • Will all the data from my Ipod touch transfer to my Iphone? Rhapsody question as well!

I have the newest version of the Ipod touch and I was looking to get an Iphone because I fell in love with my Ipod. I was wondering if everything I had on my Ipod could transfer to my Iphone. I have a ton of apps, pictures, and music. I thought it would be a shame if I went out and bought and iphone and could't transfer anything. Another big question that I have is about Rhapsody. I have a Rhapsody account that I use on my Ipod touch and I was wondering if I could use the same account on my phone. I figure someone out there has to know! Thanks for any answers that you can give!

    1. Make sure you back up all that music, photos, apps, etc to your computer and when you set up your new iPhone they will transfer with no problem.
    2. Yes, Rhapsody will work. Your Touch and the iPhone run the same OS.

  • Ipod to Transfer

My itunes library has been deleted from my computer. The songs and videos are on my IPOD. Is it possible to use the IPOD to transfer the songs to my computer? The article, USING YOUR IPOD TO TRANSFER TO NEW COMPUTER confuses me. I thought that I had followed each step but apparently I did not.

You'll be more likely to get a quick and accurate answer if you ask in the Using iTunes for Windows forum. This forum is for users of iTunes on Macintosh systems. When you get to the iTunes for Windows forum, do a search for something like "iPod back to iTunes"; the subject has been covered a number of times there already, so you won't have to wait for a response.

The transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Computer crash - how to use ipod to transfer songs to new computer?

DD's computer crashed last week - now has a new computer. We need to get songs from 20 G color/photo ipod onto new computer. Apple help pages only seem to give you options using your old computer to set ipod to transfer music. Can anyone direct us to information on getting ipod linked to new computer and transfering music over?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod.
