Is an 27-inch: 3.1GHz iMac good for minor gaming?

Hello!
I was wondering if the 3.1GHz iMac is good for minor gaming. By minor, I am not talking CoD or Wow. Rather, I am talking about games like Hearts of Iron 3 and Crusader Kings 2 (large games but less complex I feel, maybe I am wrong). My black Macbook I bought at the beginning of college is still working fine, but is nearly 6 years old now. I know the sad day will come when it dies. I love my Mac OS and want to get a new one because I use iMovie frequently and just love using my Mac. I have a decent desktop PC now but am thinking about combining everything great about both into one. With this powerful iMac, will these nerdy strategy games that I like to play work as beautifully as everything else on a Mac?
Thank you

Thank you very much for the help! For the sake of longevity, would upgrading from the i5 to the i7 be more beneficial than upgrading from 4 GB RAM to 8 GB RAM?
It depends on what you will be using the computer for. If you will be doing CPU intensive applications then you should do both, upgrade the RAM and CPU. You can do the RAM yourself by purchasing high quality RAM from trusted vendors such as www.macsales.com or Crucial. Installing it only requires a screw driver and 5 minutes of work, it's incredibly simple to do and is dramatically less expensive than buying RAM from Apple.
Please let us know the types of things you will be using the computer for in addition to the minor gaming.

  • Is BT Infinity good for Online Gaming...?

I see many people on coming on complaining that they are getting many disconenctions, lag, high ping rates etc...which leads me to my question, Is BT Infinity good for online gaming?

I came to infinity from VirginMedia where jitter is awful and your TBB graph would be full of yellow! On infinity my jitter is pretty much non existent and latency is very low.

  • Mac Mini or iMac good for graphic apps?

I currently have an older G4, dual processor, 450 MHz, 768mb RAM running Tiger. I'm a graphic designer working mainly with Quark, Freehand, Photoshop. I'm not a heavy Photoshop user. I'm trying to decide if I should upgrade to a G5 tower, or if the new iMacs or Mac Mini would work for me. I've heard that the Mac Mini could be a step backwards for my type of use. Any informed opinions would greatly help. Obviously speed is not my number one concern, but I wouldn't want to be slower! I do have an external CD/DVD burner and I need to keep my external ZIP drive.
    Thanks,
    Kristi

The Mac Mini may not be good for your use (Intel Macs in gerneral) do not have a native version of Photoshop (PPC only app so it would run under PPC emulation), so unless you have 1+GB RAM it would run slow, not as slow as on your current machine though so you might not notice the way some others might. The Mac Mini (even the core solo 1.5Ghz) will be much faster than your current machine, any modern Mac would be.I would go for an iMac since it, IMO, is going to be a better buy, since it doesn't cost that much more, and is a top of the line consumer machine. If you don't do much Photoshoping the G5 Power Mac is overkill, IMO. You may even want to look at refurb G5 iMacs if you want to save a little money.

  • Is the i5 iMac good for editing in AE and PP ?

    Hey guys,
I am interested in buying a new iMac for editing my videos. Will the new iMac with a display of 21,5 inches and an i5 CPU at 2,9 GHz will be good for editing videos and short films on Adobe After Effects and Adobe Premiere Pro ?
Thanks for the help and sorry for my English.

I'd say but be sure to get enough memory
also make sure the programs you will be using are in osx versions
because if you already have a license for a windows version and
it's not a cross platform license you will have to buy them again

  • Are iMacs good for playing video games like Skyrim?

I'm most likely to be getting a baseline iMac and I wanted to know if these computers are good for playing video games such as Skyrim before I get rid of my current PC. Also, are these games even compatable with a Mac. I've heard rumors that you can't play these kind of games on a Mac.

So, I can interchange between the Mac OS and Windows at any time I want or did I understand that wrong? Is it a one or the other kind of deal?
Yes, please read the Boot Camp FAQ for additional information.  You will need to buy a license of Windows 7 and once your get the iMac run an App called Boot Camp Assistant and follow the on-screen instructions to install Windows. Once you have you completed you will have both OS X and Windows 7 installed. BTW there is a Boot Camp forum if you have more detailed questions, that is where the Boot Camp and Windows guys hang out.
Note: Whenever you load MS Windows on your Mac it then becomes a  native Windows machine when running Windows. This means like any Windows box it is susceptible to ALL the other issues Windows users have to put up with including viruses and other malware. The good news is even if your Windows partition becomes totally diseased that in no way affects the OS X partition or OS X.

  • Are the Imacs good for Graphic Design/Illustration work?

I work as a digital illustrator so I spend all day at a monitor. I'm thinking of replacing my powerbook and am leaning towards a 20" Imac.
Does anyone else here use their Imac for professional graphic design or illustration work? How does it measure up?
I've seen many posts about poor screen quality. Should I steer clear of the Imac, or are the screens adequate for design work? At the moment I use a 17" Apple studio display (the old stripey framed kind) which is fine for my needs. How does the Imac screen compare to this?
Is it easy to connect an external monitor (I'd use my Apple Studio Display as a 2nd screen) and can you set them up so they create a giant screen area - i.e. not just 'mirrored'? I already have a VGA to DVI adaptor so presumably this is all I'd need to hook up my 2nd screen?
Is the 24" Imac screen quality much better than the 20"?
Sorry, so many questions! Any advice or opinions much appreciated - Many thanks.

To answer your first question yes they are great for digital illustration. However this will depend on how color accurate your work requires. The only downside I have found with the 20" iMacs is narrow viewing angles. This will be nothing new to you since you have the older 17" studio display. The 24" iMacs are all around absolutely stunning and have much better viewing angles however I have seen a lot of them(including mine) that have some degree of uneven back lighting. If you live anywhere near an Apple store or reseller I would recommend that you go into the store and actually use both of the machines for some period of time and see for yourself how you like it. Bring some of your illustrations from home on a flash drive to see how they look. Otherwise IMO these machines are superb. I love my 24" and it runs CS3 Apps amazingly fast.
If your 17" studio display has the ADC(Apple Digital Connector) then you will have to purchase the power supply adapter to make it work. If you are unsure if it qualifies or not just look and see if your display has it's own power plug. If not then you will need this adapter for $99. IMO it's not worth it as you could put the $100 bucks toward a new display.

  • Is iMac 5K good for games !?

Hello, I want to ask you  is the new iMac good for video games. By video games I mean games with very good graphics like Far Cry 4, GTA 5, CoD AW, Dying Light and other like them   or I should get a cheeper gaming pc? Please, answer me if you can.

The only way to play high games with high response times on an IMac is to get an IMac with high end specs and that'll make it a very expensive gaming machine.
You need to check the sites for the games you play for the nominal (average) hardware specs as well as the higher end hardware specs.
None of the 21 inch screen IMacs will hack it for high end gaming as their GPUs top out at 1 GB VRAM and the i7 CPUs are NOT the fastest available.
The only 5K retina iMac is the 27 inch screen model that starts at $2500 U.S.D. and the 27 inch screen models are the only models to get all of the bells and whistles needed like maybe a top of the line i7 CPU(for games the i7 CPU is really needed over the more common i5 CPUs), top of the line GPU (or  see if you can get away with the base (2 GB VRAM GPUs) and faster 7200 RPM hard drives (the 21 inch screen iMacs only come now with laptop standard 5400 RPM hard drives, now) or faster/larger Fusion or SSD/Flash based drives.
You'll be close to the $3000 mark or more if you go with both the fastest CPU (4.0 Ghz) AND the 4 GB VRAM GPU.
If you are trying to compare an iMac gaming machine to a cheap PC for gaming, it sounds as if to me you do not have the budget for a $2500 IMac???
Even the non-retina 27 inch iMacs will set you back, at least $2000 U.S.D. for the higher spec'd. model.
If you are really considering the cheap PC route (which won't be as cheap as you think for a comparable PC with good gaming hardware specs), maybe just stick to your PC for gaming.
It seems to me that the budget is not there or realistic for a IMac with the specs you are going to need.
    Good Luck!

  • Is Man mini any good for gaming?

    Hi everyone !
I'm planning to buy a 2014 Mac mini (16gb, corei7). But i'm not sure if it's good for hardcore gaming (GTA V, Battlefield 4...) because of the graphics (Intel Iris Graphics). I would really appreciate it if someone could tell me if I can run good games without any problems.

tons of people play minecraft on the Air, yes.
Is the Air an idealized gaming machine?  NO

  • I have a 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac. Should I upgrade to Yosemite?

I have a 24-inch Mid 2007 iMac. Should I upgrade to Yosemite?  I was advised by genius bar that it would slow down my iMac.

According to sources such as http://mactracker.ca download database specs for
the iMac (24-inch Mid 2007) your computer can use more RAM than it has now.
Maximum Memory:    6.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots:    2 - 200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM
•iMac: How to remove or install memory
And so it should work better even if you stay with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5.
The hardware upgrade will help the Mac OS + applications, in basic functions.
[This computer is already considered 'vintage' by Apple...]
Depending on the amount of use the computer has seen so far, it may also be
a candidate for a replacement hard disk drive; perhaps a larger capacity, too.
If you consider an upgrade, also consider a complete backup and a bootable
clone of the current (if updated to 10.8.5 with its applications updated) OS X
on an externally enclosed hard disk drive with its own power supply. You can
see a few of these that do not run on Mac port power, & standalone, at OWC.
{The company known as OWC is macsales.com, a fair example of mac-centric
    supplier of quality products for Mac community, awhile. Or so people tell me.}
Clone utilities such as superduper, carboncopy cloner, or disk utility can work.
Test a cloned OS X copy for boot-ability and other function before moving on.
Could be you'd be better off with this computer on Mt Lion than a later OS X.
And a newer later computer should also have hardware specs and some up-
ward expandability for use with the expected new & future changes to OS X.
Hopefully you can get some fair use and more years from your iMac 24".
And that means hope for the best, and plan for the worst. Backup, backup...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • IMacs are good for gaming

Im thinking about buying a 21'' Imac for gaming and other stuff, would it be good for playing some games?

Buy a dedicated gaming box, instead.
Better for gaming than a Mac and less expensive.
The 21 inch screen iMac models won't cut it for gaming if you need high resolution, fast refresh graphics.
The 21 inch screen iMac models only come with a 512 VRAM GPU.
Not enough GPU power for high end gaming with high resolution graphics requirements.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • Use 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for 2013 macbook air?

I would like to use my 21.5 inch mid 2010 imac as a display for my 2013 macbook air. I tried using Screen Recycle, however I would prefer more of a monitor situation than a side-by-side extra screen situation. Ideally with my wireless keyboard and mouse. Does anyone have any advice, or am I asking too much from apple? Thanks very much.

Yes. With an Ethernet cable and a product such as ScreenRecycler.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive.

I want to dual boot Windows 8 on my 20-inch, Mid 2007 iMac, from an external USB drive. The internal drive is completely dead, it doesn't even show up in Disk Utility.  I'm running 10.8.2 from the external drive.  When I start Boot Camp Assistant, at the Introduction page, when I press the continue button nothing happens.  Do I have to have internal drive to run Boot Camp Assistant?  Can anyone provide me with the steps to dual boot, with his setup?  Thanks in advance!

    Hi maczimillon,
Only follow these steps, it works for my:
Open "System Information" and note your "Boot ROM Version" (some like MBP51.007E.B06)
Navigate to "Utilities" in Finder and open the package contents of -BootCampAssistant.app- with right click. Duplicate the "Info.plist" file to the Desktop e.g. and open that with Text Editor.
You must locate the keys "DARequiredROMVersions"and "USBBootSupportedModels"
Add new strings with the information of your machine under booth keys (step 1), always respect the format, such as: <string>MBP51.007E.B06</string> for the frist key and <string>MBP51</string> for the second key.
Save changes and replace the original plist file (it may ask you to enter admin pass)
If you proceeded correctly you will see the checkbox "Create a Windows 7 USB install disk" enabled in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then you can follow the usual Boot Camp installation using your WIN8 DVD iso image . The assistant program will proceed resizing your disk partition and installing necessary drivers for your iMac.
I strongly recomends you to use thirld party's bootloaders like rEFInd (rEFIt) because of the Apple SMC versions of some old machines should not be able to boot properly from external devices like USB drives.

You are only running on 2GB of RAM. IMHO 4GB woud be the minimum to realistically run Mavericks on, although the more the better.
