Is Bluetooth really standard?

I have a wireless stereo headset (Motorola) that worked great with my iPhone 4 but won't connect to my iPhone 5. I recently bought an inexpensive "in ear" wireless device (Plantronics) that works great and even allows me to listen to music and use Siri. It's not stereo but it works. I would really like to know what the difference is if Bluetooth is a standard.

Bluetooth is a standard, but it also has multiple supported profiles.  It also comes in a series of continuously updated versions or releases.  Like any electronics standard (USB, SATA, wifi 802.11/a/b/g/n, EDGE, 3G LTE, ...) it continually changes as technology progresses.
Your iPhone 5 supports Bluetooth version 4.0.  While it is largely backwards compatible with older BT releases, it is always possible that a much older bluetooth device (say one with BT 1 or 2) may have some incompatability with newer BT devices.
Also, some headsets only pair with one device, and need to be reset to discoverable mode to pair with a new device.  Did you check the motorola documentation for yours to be sure you forced it back into pairing or discoverable mode before trying to connect to the iPhone 5?
P.S. Bluetooth is also not secret - all the information you could ever want (and likely more then you ever will) is readily available

  • Is the earphone jack REALLY standard?

I have a Curve 8900 and I love everything about it except the earphone jack. When I first got it a few months ago, I didn't notice the problem because it works fine with the standard Blackberry earphone (3-ring). Then I tried plugging another standard 3.5" earphone (2-ring) and it wouldn't fit. I thought it was just a Blackberry quirk, but then I tried it with my sister's Curve 8900 and the 2-ring earphone fit just fine with hers.
So I went to the mobile provider where I got the Blackberry from (StarHub in Singapore). The customer support person tried plugging a third-party earphone to a 8900 unit she had on stock and it wouldn't fit. She thought it was strange, but she didn't have another phone on stock so she asked me to wait. When I finally got a replacement unit, the earphone jack worked fine for exactly 1 day. Now I've tried three non-Blackberry earphones and none would fit (the standard Blackberry earphone still works). The phone has been in a rubber case and it wasn't dropped, bumped or anything.
I went back again to StarHub. The customer service person tried my non-Blackberry earphone to a different 8900 phone on stock and it wouldn't fit. She concluded that the 8900 could only work with the standard Blackberry earphone that comes in the box and that she couldn't help me any further.
So I've come across 4 out 5 Curve 8900 units that don't work with a non-Blackberry earphone. Is the earphone jack really a standard 3.5"?

  • Qosmio G20: How to disable/workaround SCMS-T for adiosyn with bluetooth headphones?

    Greetings All,
I've recently purchased a set of bluetooth stereo headphones (Creative CB2350) and found that due to the inclusion of SCMS-T copyright protection I cannot audiosync directly to my laptops bluetooth stack (Qosmio G20). The headphones come with an audio jack adapter (bluetooth transmitter), however it runs on a single AAA battery and cannot last more than about an hour; so I need to connect without this.
Is there any way to disable or workaround the requirement for SCMS-T copyright-protection in the latest toshiba bluetooth stack? and if not why not?! I've paid good money for both my Qosmio and my Headphones and I'm quit infuriated at the deliberate inclusion of software/firmware designed specifically to prevent me from using my hardware for legitimate purposes (i.e. what they were designed to do).
    Please Help Me,
    Lee ([email protected])
PS: Frankly I didn't have much of a problem with DRM technology before this, but now I can see just how irritating and pointless DRM is; compare the number of people who actually use bluetooth devices for pirating (negligable) to the number of bluetooth headphones that do not support SCMS-T (alot if all my google searchs are anything to go by) and you see just how stupid the whole idea of DRM over bluetooth really is.
In my not so humble opinion big corporations like toshiba should railroaded over converluted pap such as SCMS-T as a matter of recourse; the end user doesn't want to spend several years downloading licenses and scouring the web only to find out his/her hardware is utterly useless. (sorry for the rant but that is how I feel).

    Hy there deepblue,
    Thanks for responding again.
Initially I had thought that the adapter/transmitter failed due to a dead battery, although I have since confirmed that the battery is not dead, in fact the adapter works fine (at least for a time). It would seem that the adapter simply shuts down at random intervals (it has happened a few times now) and I can't figure out for the life of me why; the adapter is designed to switch-off after 2 minutes of inactivity although each time it (randomly) switches off I have been recieving audio so perhaps there is something wrong with the auto switch-off function? or perhaps the batteries are in the process of dying?
I have can't recall seeing an estimate of battery lifetime for the adapter on the creative product website (that is not to say there isn't one) but the headset has an estimated continuous runtime of up to 8 hours (on its 2xAAA batteries) so I would assume that the adapter can last at least as long (on its 1xAAA battery); if not this amounts to a major design flaw in my opinion. Sadly the adapter doesn't come with an AC adapter, it is only little itself and I assume it would require one heck of a transformer. ;)
Bah, I'll try and get the blasted thing to work reliably over the next week or so and if I have no luck creative can sort it out. It would still be nice to use my headset without the aid of the audio jack, seeing that headset logo on my bluetooth 'radar' screen is a bit of a tease. ;)
Incidentally I have been probing furiously to find a set of bluetooth headphones which support SCMS-T and it would seem there is only one set on the market (by bluetake) and what's more it would seem that the SCMS-T is specifically designed to degrade sound quality (don't know to what extent but regardless this seems like 1 step forward followed by 5 steps back to me) which would seem incompatible with any bluetooth consumer audio products - Toshiba me thinks it is time to lock the proponents of SCMS-T in a cupboard somewhere and get to work on bluetooth stack v5.0. ;)

  • Wireless portable speakers - airplay or bluetooth?

    Hello everybody
Could you recommend based on your practical experience portable stereo speakers to stream audio from iphone or ipad? These speakers would be used around home 99% of the case and while they can be plugged to a power plug I'd rather have an option with battery because I'd like to have an option to take them on a trip and do not want to deal with different power/voltage problems.
Fiest of all - if only audio streaming is required, would be Bluetooth sufficient? I do care about the sound quality.
Budget is no more than $200. Based on that I've identified two possible candidates:

Do you have an experience owning them? If yes, could you share it?
    Thanks in advance.

Bluetooth and WIFI Airplay are both very good quality audio.  You'll be more limited by the speakers in the device, than you are the two interfaces.
I like WIFI-Airplay for home, more versatile and better range.
I like bluetooth for traveling, because I don't have to worry about having a working WIFI network.  But really this works fine for home as well.  Bluetooth really is more versatile.

  • Bluetooth ear clip for tiger macbook?

I've been looking for a nice small truely wireless bluetooth earclip to use with a macbook running tiger or an ipod. I think Leopard macs have some new kind of bluetooth. really I'd like to find one that just works with one ear. something like the Cerulean F1 without the adjoining wire would be perfect. there are just too many choices to pick from. don't need a microphone ability, just for music without wires. like the range to be about 20-25 feet.
of course, if anyone has broken their Cerulean F1 and wants to have stereo, i'll take it off your hands for you.
    any suggestions?

    thanks,
just looking for something better than the soundtrack inside my brain. and for work, so i can have tunes in one ear and pretend to listen to people with the other.
if all of my computers have bluetooth, do any/all bluetooth earphones like the jaybird pair up with tiger automatically, or do i need some sort of adaptor?

  • Bluetooth on new Mac Pro

    Hey all,
I just bought a new Mac Pro with bluetooth installed, but I'm having some issues. The system finds the bluetooth card and all the associated software (the bluetooth pref panel, the bluetooth menu, etc) seems to be functioning the way it should but the computer can't find any bluetooth devices.
When I try to set up a new device, and I've tried a keyboard, a mouse, and two different phones, I make the device discoverable and then BT set up gives me the message "no _ found. make sure your device is on and set to discoverable" or something to that effect. Is the card defective? Normally when the cards don't work bluetooth itself would show up as unavailable. Any ideas what's going on?
Mac Pro 2x3GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   4 GB RAM, RadeonX1900, Bluetooth card

The standard first attempt at "fixing" BT problems is to do a smc and pram reset (try these first).  But for mac pro's, if you are using a magic mouse say, about 3 or more feet, from the mac pro, you are most likely in for some continued aggravation.  That's because the BT antenna is hidden in the back of the mac pro (faraday cage) and the magic mouse BT, for lack of better words, $ucks.
Here's a thread on this subject:
Poor Bluetooth reception and jerky mouse
Basically it comes down to wiring your own external antenna in place of the internal one already there or using a BT USB dongle.  I use a dongle myself on my 2010 mac pro.

  • Accidently deleted standard paragraph tags H1, H2. How do get them?

I could, of course, import them in from another new document but is there an easier, more standard way?  Thanks.

They’re not really “standard” tags, simply paragraph formats defined by whoever designed your templates or initial documents. (My FrameMaker, for example, makes new documents with Heading1, Heading2, not H1, H2.) Importing from your original template would be the usual way to go.
Having said that, if the paragraph formats are already used in your document, but you have just deleted them from the catalogue, you can restore them. With the cursor in an “H1” paragraph, click on Apply in the paragraph designer. FrameMaker will prompt you to (re)create it as a format and add it to the catalogue.

  • Can one get a bluetooth plantronics 510 voyager to work with skype?

I have a Bluetooth enabled Plantronics 510 voyager and was curious to find out if it is possible to work with skype on my macbook. If so, how? If not I guess that's why my macbook is not detecting the headset.

Yes, any bluetooth really. You have to pair up the Mac and the Earpiece via bluetooth. Once paired, your bluetooth earpiece is a new mic for your Mac. Go into the Skype preferences and select "plantronics 510" as your audio input device and you can set your audio out the same if you want to hear it in your ear, or keep it as your Mac speakers.

  • X300 Bluetooth device not found

    Hello,
When I try to install the bluetooth utilities I get a message from the setup utility, that there is no bluetooth adapter installed on the system. There are no errors in device manager (all drivers are ok) and I though bluetooth was standard on the x300. Could anyone provide any suggestions, maybe I disabled something somewhere?
    Thanks

If you are sure the buletooth device came with the laptop and the laptop does not find it  do this.
    Make sure bluetooth is enable.
    - There may be a on/off switch on sides
-Check bluetooth is enable in bios.
If no progress then use an external USB bluetooth.

  • Bluetooth file transfer fails after a second.

Strange issue. Can transfer a file from my C510 to my Ku990 Phone and then to the T400. However can not transfer files from my C510 to my T400. The transfer starts then after around a second shops saying it's failed. Have the drivers updated from win update and the latest firmware on my phone. Anyone had anything simiar or know what is wrong?

I'm afraid I can't help with finding the temporary file. I just did a BT File Transfer myself whilst monitoring my system but no new or modified files showed up.
However, Bluetooth really isn't designed for transferring gigabytes of data due to its very low transfer speeds.
If the computers are close enough for Bluetooth, you're far better off connecting an Ethernet or Firewire cable between the two and transferring that way. 6GB of data would transfer in a matter of minutes, rather than hours (or days) over Bluetooth.

  • Single-Step Bluetooth?

Hello - Is there a Single-Step (ONE-BUTTON) Bluetooth button on iPhone? It is so obvious as to be crazy, but why is this so extremely often-used button BURIED beneath a 5-step process merely to turn it on or off (which I do for many good reasons, including battery drain).
I am honestly baffled and must give the benefit of the doubt that there is an explaination WHY YOUTUBE has a place on the TOP menu, but Bluetooth is 5 (FIVE) tedious steps below this top menu. AND it is the button MOST LIKELY to be used IN TRAFFIC. That means WHILE DRIVING - forgot to turn it on, call comes in, gotta scramble to turn on and be safe with headset, but it takes 5 steps to turn it on!
Someone please get me off this ledge and explain how this could be. Thank you. (

Bluetooth really drains my battery and I only need it 1/2 the time, depending on circumstances - PLUS, picking up every device in the immediate area is a pain, etc.
I don't see this at all. I leave Bluetooth on all the time, and I get several days on a charge. So it is likely something else that is draining your battery. Bluetooth is not a heavy drain unless you have a paired device turned on also. Just turn off the headset and leave Bluetooth on the phone enabled.
I am with Finch. I leave BT on. I leave wifi on. My battery lasts through alot of hours of calls/iTunes/a little U tube and a good many hours of standby.... Only once did I ever drain the sucker low after 2 days of hardcore use.
Edit: Can't recall ever digging through any phone's settings to turn on/off BT. Turned it on and left it that way thereafter...

  • 6300 Bluetooth a2dp headset reconnection issue

    Hi,
I have a Nokia 6300 with latest firmware/software. I am using a SE MW600 Bluetooth stereo headset for listening music, everything ok but when I try to reconnect it always loose connection. It says Disconnecting... .
I had the same issue before with a non-original (No brand) A2DP headset. It seems this is not the headset's issue, I think this is the Nokia 6300 phone's issue.
It is 2010 now, but Bluetooth is not compatible with its devices.
What is the solution? Why do I have to pay for something for Bluetooth, for Symbian, for Nokia phone they can not make a compatible device / accessory / software ? Is Bluetooth a standard? Why do we have to pay for those ?engineers  who can not make a compatible device?

Well, I decided I didn't want to put up with this anymore, so my Pre went back to the store yesterday. I'm just sick of having a phone that's missing one crucial feature or another--I've been a loyal Palm customer for many years now, but it seems like they have turned into a second-class company. Lack of support and updates, shoddy products, etc.--it just seems like they never quite get it right.
So, I'm somewhat sorry to say it, but I'm going to get an iphone. While I'd prefer to have a device that had a physical QWERTY keyboard, I'm willing to put up with a virtual one as long as the phone operates correctly.
So, thanks for the memories, Palm! On to the iphone I go.........

  • USb3 drivers won't install win7 downgrade

I uninstalled windows 8 on a touchsmart envy20 d034 and put on win7 home premium.  I got all the drivers except for USB3, sm bus controller, and bluetooth.  The only one I really care about is usb3.  I've tried a dozen different installs but always get  " This software does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software".  Arrgh!   They were working with Win8 but I am NOT going to use that horrible OS.  I've tried the Intel downloads and several different downloads from HP.
    Suggestions?

    Hi:
I can't find any comparable model to yours with W7 drivers.
    So, see if these work...
    Chipset: Should install SMBus Controller.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=cp-105638-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...=
USB3: If this one doesn't work, please post the hardware ID for it.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=cp-108665-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en...=
Bluetooth:  I think that most of today's desktop PC's with built in wireless and bluetooth use standard notebook wireless cards.
So, try this Ralink Bluetooth software and driver from a contemporary notebook PC.
You will notice that it is the same driver version as the one on your PC's support and driver page but this one also offers support for W7.

  • Should I upgrade to 8GB or 16GB of memory (RAM)?

I've had my laptop since November of last year but lately it seems to be getting slow and constantly loading for no reason.  I was thinking of upgrading the processor, but I read that I will void the warranty if I do that so my next step would be to upgrade the RAM.  I currently have 6GB installed, however only 5.48GB is usable and almost 2GB is being used by my system with barely anything open.  I've had this problem before and I reset my computer to factory default settings, but it seems to not have helped.  So I was wondering if I should upgrade the memory to 8GB or 16GB?  How much would it help to speed things up on my computer?  I would really appreciate the help.  Please let me know.  Thank you.  Here are my computer specs:
    dv6z Quad Ed

    • Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    • AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M Accelerated Processor (2.4GHz/1.5GHz, 4MB L2 Cache)
    • AMD Radeon(TM) Discrete-Class Graphics [HDMI, VGA]
    • FREE Upgrade to 6GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
    • 640GB 5400RPM Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
    • No Additional Office Software
    • No additional security software

    • 802.11b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth(R)
    • Standard Keyboard
    • HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Does sound like a less than optimized OS install & kind of typical of most factory OEM install machines.
I would download the generic Windows 7 install & give it a nice clean install & setup as will be far more rewarding than RAM upgrade.
I run a probook on 3GB for business/work related use & it is enough & the craze for 16GB of ram is simply a waste for 99% of people.
Do a ram test & hard drive test & ifgood think about a clean install.
