Is Dimensional Hierarchy always created for a Dimension?

Hi! In my data model there are dimensions but, they do not follow any hierarchy i.e. everything is at the same level. In such a case do I still need to define hierarchy? I know that a Dimensional Hierarchy will have at least two levels, Grand Total and Detail, what happens when everything is at Detail Level?

there is no need to define any level based measures as everything will be at the primitive level.
It is just like having no hierarchy defined, but only at grand total you can associate measures from multiple fact tables & get grand totals.
let me know if that resolved your doubt!!

  • Multiprovider should be always created for Infocubes? Even for 1 Infocube?

I was told that even if there is 1 infocube, I should still create a MultiProvider for that 1 InfoCube, because it is in theory good practice.
Is this a business norm? Is it bad practice to goto Query Designer and just open Infocube?
If this is true, can someone explain the logic behind this?
    Thanks in advance.

It is a good idea to Create an MP (MultiProvider) on the top of several InfoCubes. This improves performance. However, building a MP on a single InfoCube does not do much on performance but it saves a lot of additional admin that may be required in future to get adapt with. See the web log below for more clarity...
https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/pub/wlg/10148?page=last&x-order=date [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken]
In my view, no matter whatever the number of InfoProviders are, if there is a scope to build an MP, we should do so.

  • Number of elements - Dimensional Hierarchy

    Hi,
In a *'Dimensional Hierarchy'*, while creating a new *'Parent level'*, a 'Logical Level' dialogue box prompts for entering *'Number of elements at this Level'*+. What is its significance ?
What is achieved by+ *'Number of elements at this Level'* +?+
    Thanks in Advance & Regards,
    Deeba

    Hi deeba,
Its not mandatory to specify the number of elements in hierarchy....if you wont mention also by default it takes the value of 1.....Above vino gave you the link for explanation.
Hope it helps you...Award points and close the thread.

  • Creating one dimensional hierarchy using columns from 2 different dimension

    Hello guys
I have a case here.. The way our business is set up is that we have one dim table called channel dim, and another one call customers. Customer ID should be the child of channel ID. In other words, the measures at each Customer ID level should rollup to its parent channel ID level..
So I am creating a hierarchy in my BMM which is named channel sales Dim:
    channel sales Dim--
    -- Grand Total Level
    -- Channel parent
    channel ID (Key)
    --Customer Details
    Customer ID(Key)
    Account (Sum)
Both channel_ID and Customer_ID are the primary keys of Channel Dim and Customer Dim, both dim are joined to the sales fact table..
So the hierarchy is created in such way, however when I check consistency it is giving me errors: nqserror15003: missing most detailed table for dimension table (Channel_Dim, Customer_Dim)
Any advice of how to deal with this error?
    Much thanks

    Hi,
Yes the fact table has the keys to the date and customer dimension. Is there any other column or information needed to create the constraint prompt?
    Thanks.

  • Create hierarchy for a dimension in Oracle Express Administrator

I have a lookup table called 'Location'. This lookup table has a primary key PKLOC which is made up of 2 columns, State Varchar2(20) and City Varchar2(20). This primary key obviously is a lookup for a dimension of one of my cube and the data in the primary key is hierarchical with 2 levels, namely state and city. I need to import this data into my dimension, Location, using Relational import, in the following form.
    eg. Level 1 Level 2
MD ---- Odenton, Baltimore, Fort Meade
    VA ---- Dulles, Fair Fax
where MD and VA will come from the column State Varchar2(20) and Odenton, Baltimore, Fort Meade
Dulles and Fair Fax will come from the column City Varchar2(20).
The values in my lookup table will look like this
    State City
    MD Odenton
    MD Baltimore
    MD Fort Meade
    VA Dulles
    VA Fair Fax
    how do I import it.

You need to do this in your source table.
The source table can look something like this
    qtr_id, qtr_name, month_id, month_name
    1 , Qtr1 , 101 , january
    1 , Qtr1 , 102 , febuary
    1 , Qtr1 , 103 , march
    2 , Qtr2 , 104 , april
    2 , Qtr2 , 105 , may
    2 , Qtr2 , 106 , june
Then map it to the dimension, and maintain it.
Keep in mind that the member(id) fields need to be unique. I.E january 2007 and january 2006 cannot have the same id.

  • How to create Hierarchies for a Dimension?

    Hi,
How to create Hierarchies for a Dimension in Multidimensional Models? Could you please suggest some document provides step by step instructions to create Multidimensional Model?
    Thanks
    M Thiyagarajan

    Hi M Thiyagarajan,
connect dimension to first level and after that connect that level to another one and so on. For level - each additional outgoing connection means additional hierarchy.

  • Problem creating hierarchy based on 2 physical dimension tables

I'm having a problem creating 1 logical dimension with a drill-down hierarchy, based on two separate physical dimension tables. The errors I receive when navigating the drill-down hierarchy is:
"Cannot find logical table source coverage for logical columns" &
    "Missing join between logical tables".
    I'm using OBIEE 10.1.3.4
Here are the details of what I have setup sofar:
    Physical layer:
    Dimension table DIM_ORG with columns:
    -dimension_key
    -org_total_code
    -org_total_description
    -org_detail_code
    -org_detail_description
    Dimension table DIM_DEPT with columns:
    -dimension_key
    -dept_total_code
    -dept_total_description
    -dept_detail_code
    -dept_detail_description
    Fact table FACT_SALES with columns:
    -fk_org
    -fk_dept
    -sum_sales
    Physical Joins:
    FACT_SALES.fk_org = DIM_ORG_dimension_key
    FACT_SALES.fl_dept = DIM_DEPT.dimension_key
    Business Model & Mapping layer:
I created a logical dimension ORG_DEPT. It contains two logical table sources (DIM_ORG & DIM_DEPT) and the following logical columns:
    - All Departments (mapped to dept_total_code)
    - Organisation (mapped to org_detail_description)
    - Organisation Number (mapped to org_detail_code)
    - Department (mapped to dept_detail_description)
    - Department Code (mapped to dept_detail_code)
The business logical key is based on the combination of Organisation Number & Department Code
The hierarchy I need is: All Departments -> Organisation -> Department so I created the following hierarchy for ORG_DEPT:
    - Total Level containing: All Departments
    - Organisation Level containing: Organisation Number (defined as the Logical level key) & Organisation (defined als the Drill level key)
    - Detail Department Level containing: Department Code (defined as Logical level key) and Department (defined as Drill level key).
In the LTS of the dimension ORG_DEPT I've set the Content levels for the sources:
    DIM_ORG : Organisation Level
    DIM_DEPT: Detail Department Level
In the LTS no -inner- joins have been added against related physical tables.
I created a logical fact table SALES (based on the physical fact table) and joined it against the logical dimension table ORG_DEPT.
In the LTS the Content level for ORG_DEPT is set against the Detail Department Level. No - inner- joins have been aded against related physical tables.
When I create a report in Answers to test the hierachy and select only 'All Departments' I get the correct dimension value returned. When I try to drill to the next level I get the following ODBC error:
"Cannot find logical table source coverage for logical columns: [All Departments]. Please check more detailed level keys are mapped correctly".
When I create a report in Answers and select both 'All Departments' and 'Sales' I get the correct result. When I try to drill to the next level I get a different ODBC error:
"Missing join between logical tables DIM_DEPT and DIM_DEPT: There must be at least one physical join link between the underlying physical tables".
    Any suggestions are welcome!
    Thanks!

    Hello Robert,
Your suggestions were known to me but I still wanted to combine the two physical dimension tables in one logical dimension. So I've played around a bit more and found the solution: In my original setup I had two seperate logical table sources (one for each physical dimension table). The solution was to combine the two logical table sources in one logical table source. I achieved that by logical joining the DIM_DEPT table to the FACT_SALES table and subsequently to the DIM_ORG within the 1 LTS and using inner joins.
Then I created the logical table key (a combination of org_detail_code & dept_detail_code). After that I could create the hierarchy with no problem.

  • Drilldown in answers without creating dimensional hierarchy in BMM layer?

    Hello All,
HELP! I have a main report like this:
title: Region EAST (prompted field- user entered: North, South.... )
    heading: Departments Total Sales
    rows: Meat (01) 500,000.00
    Produce (02) 100,000.00
    Organic Items(03) 250,000.00
Users wanted to ClLICK on either Meat, Produce or Organic Items field to get the detailed report on that particular dept. and would prefer to Click on the desired field than using department as a prompted field. :(
I did try to use the navigate function on Departments column to get to the detail report, but the results came back with ALL departments. Is it possible to drill down in answers without creating the dimensional hierarchy in BMM layer? If so, please show me how to create the link that would navigate to the detailed report when users CLICK on desired department, ex: Meat (01)? BTW, detailed report may came from different resources (data is in the detailed table...) and I still need to pass the region variable to the detailed report.
I really need a big help on this.
    Thanks All in advance!

    Hi Matt,
thank you for looking into this problem.
I did use the Navigate function on the 1st report, create a prompted filter on the depatment column (second report) but user can only click on the high lighted Department column header (on the first report) which navigated to the 2nd report and it displayed detail of all departments. Since users cannot click on a particular deptpartment, therefore I cannot pick up the value (01) for Meat department to pass thru the 2nd report. Is the Navigate function just works only when you click on the header column not on the data values in that column? do I need to set any other function to the department column on the 2nd report beside the filter?
    thanks for your help!

  • Creating A new dimension for a characteristic versus adding in the same dim

    Hi Guys,
I have a scenario where I have 0Material in a line item dimension in the cube.
Have to add 0Mat_plant which is compounded to 0plant as we need MRP controller
as one of the Nav attributes. 0Plant is also available in the cube.
There are two options of doing this:
    1) Either add it to the 0Material dimension removing the line item property.
    2) Or create a new dimension for 0MAt_plant and make it as line item dimension
considering the large volume of material information.
Which is a better option and why.
    Please advise.
    Many Thanks and Regards,
    KAte

    Hi Kate,
I'd recommend to have a new dimension as line itemdimension for 0MAT_PLANT, just for performance purposes (almost logarithmic access of data instead of full table scan)
The Plant Segments in R/3 usually have a lot more records than the general material master has (max: number of plants * number of materials).
Adding the object to 0material means that you have to unassign the line item flag. Usually this leads to increasing load- and queryruntimes.

  • Error while create aggmap for concatenated dimension ???

How can I create aggmap for concatenated dimension ??
I created dimensions named awprod_lvl0 ,awprod_lvl1,awprod_lvl2,awprod_lvl3,awprod_lvl4 and concatenated with a dimension awproducts. Then I created a parent relation awproducts.parents and mapped into the relational tables using sql fetch procedure .Iam able to see values in the olap work sheet .When i tried to create aggmap for different aggregation , it is throwing an error??It is telling that awproducts and awpro_lvl4_id cannot appear because they share same base level dimension...
can anyone help in resolving this problem?????

Jithesh, could you provide the exact definitions for the aggmaps, dimensions and relations that you're using?

  • Need to Create a Last 12 Months Variable for Custom Dimension

    Hi everybody
Once again, I need your good help for an issue I'm facing. In one of our Cube, we have some Date Dimension sthat we've created ourselves (a ZCXXXXX dimension). For one Dimension, Ii need to create a variable that is giving me, automaticaly, the Last 12 Months excluding Current Month (same as the 0CML12LM provided by SAP) without any manual entry done by the user via the Variable Entry Screen.
I don't want to use offset because I don't want to allow any Manual intervention for my users because it is a report start via RRI.
Please let me know if you are aware on how to do this!
    Thanks
    Eric L.

    Hi Arun
My problem is that my report is counting Incident per supplier per Month.  We have a Key Figure that is doing the Total of incident with a Vendor Variable.  So, for a given supplier, if there is no incident for the Incident Month, it won't display in the Result Page.  Also, My report is dynamic so I'can not fix a Structure.  On the other hand, I never used Strucutre, so I'm not really aware on how using this and if it will answer my need.
If you can give me more details, maybe I'll be able if a Structure is my solution.
    Regards

  • Creating alias for BEx dimensions in crystalreport

I need help with creating alias formula for BEx dimensions in crystal report. Iam trying to follow the book, but i don't know what should be the result.

    Hi,
Crystal Reports is using the technical names of the InfoObjects itself so those names should be familiar assuming you also know the BEx Query.
If you want to create some form of an alias the option I can see is to create a set of formulas which simply include the field and then use those formulas as part of any other formulas.

  • Creating UDA for a dimension member

    Hi All,
when I am creating UDA for a dimension member in my planning application I get the following error.
The associated dimension ID has not been set for this property. Do you want to create the association now?
Can anyone please let me knwo wahts this error?
    Thanks

I take this is an EPMA application, you have to create dimension association between the UDA property and the UDA dimension.
    Have a read of :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17236_01/epm.1112/epma_admin/epma_create_assoc.html
