Is Firefox x64 more secure against Malware attacks than Firefox x32?

I have a Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 x64 computer. It is my understanding that Windows 7 HP SP1 x64 is more secure against Malware-Virus attacks then Window 7 HP SP1 x32.
I am using Firefox 6.0B2 x32 and just started also using Firefox 8.0A1 x64. Both are working fine.
Is the x64 version of Firefox more secure than the x32 version against Malware-Virus attacks on a Windows 7 SP1 x64 computer simply because it is x64.

No, it isn't.

  • Firefox has disabled Webroot which is my security against malware intrusion. I NEED Webroot to be acitve because of all the sites I go to. How do I get my Firefox back to the earlier version that it was so I can use my Webroot?

Firefox keeps updating itself even though I don't want it to. Now that I have Firefox 5.0 it won't let my Webroot work. I may have to get rid of my Firefox altogether if this persists.

Only when i go to a different browser (like IE) after i clear it , then all that shows up is the pages i visited in IE , that is what bugs me , why is IE browsing history sowing up in Firefox ??
Basically , i can clear the history in Firefox , and then for a example , go to Craigslist , using IE7 (launching it from a complete different Icon , in other words at that time i never open Firefox) , then after closing out , or even leaving open as it does not seem to matter , i go into Firefox , and hit History , and there is every place i visited in IE7 , on my History in Firefox

  • Which is less/more secure, Mac OS 10.4.11 or Mac OS 10.6.8?

I understand that both Mac OS 10.4.11 and Mac OS 10.6.8 have security holes, and that 10.4.11 is no longer supported.  If neither 10.4.11 nor 10.6.8 are supported, and if unpatched vulnerabilities in 10.6.8 are worse than those in 10.4.11, then I presume that, because fewer people use 10.4.11, nobody will attack it, whereas many people use 10.6.8 which makes it more attractive to hackers.
Therefore, my question is this:  did 10.5.x and/or 10.6.x (and their respective Safari versions) introduce new security vulnerabilities that are not present in 10.4.11, or are all of Snow Leopard's (or Safari 5.1.10's) critical security vulnerabilities inherited from earlier versions such as Tiger?

Most people would likely disagree with me, & although higher versions of OSX got Security fixes, I think older is or can be made more secure.
TenFourFox for PPC & Firefox for Intel is a more advanced Browser than Safari in either version.
I consider Little Snitch essential for security also in 10.4.11 to 10.10.2
There are also some security fixes for 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 that you can apply yourself, here's a link to Bash fixes & maybe ntpd fixes...

  • My Biggest Concern with all Windows and Windows 8.1 - NSA malware attacks!

    My Biggest Question with  Windows.
With all the NSA infecting malwares to all computers around the globe.
Does Windows 8.1 have any form of protection with NSA Hacking incidents!
Because I find that the Windows Integrated firewall is not up to par to protecting my computer from these attacks!
Microsoft must perk up their security in their products!

How are we going to put any trust when a product is infected by NSA malwares!
    See Video:-

Windows 8.1 comes with Anti-Malware protection (Windows Defender) and will protect you against malwares.

  • How do you protect yourself against DDOS attacks?

I'm starting a new job soon for an employer who has had the occasional ddos attack against their website.
Anyways I was wondering, how do you guys protect yourselves against ddos attacks?
The way my employer fought against it last time was rather unelegant and a sort of lucky situation. They noticed that all the attacks came from IPs which where located in foreign countries, so they simply blocked entire ip ranges which werent from the country they were providing the service for.
This seems like quite a drastic measure to me. After all, one goal of my employer is to become more international, and even if you cater only to local clientele, plenty of legitimate users could be across the border.
Specifically protecting Apache against DDOS attacks is what I would be interested in.
Can anyone suggest some software or setup I should research for this?

A colleague of mine recently had one of his own servers under a DDOS attack. Nginx helped out a bit. But the holy grail in this case was Fail2ban.
Now, usually a DOS would mean that massive requests are issued within a short time. Such behaviour is easily identified and blocked. But how do you react when its distributed and each individual node is issueing requests at a normal rate?
Well in my tests I came to the conclusion that its all about the difference in typical behaviour of legitimate visitors to a site and automated requests as in the case of a DDOS attack.
For example, while a DOS bot might not issue requests at an alarmingly high rate (slow and steady wins the race), but will continually issue requests for hours.
So rather than trying to catch "burst" behaviour with requests crossing a certain threshold in a short amount of time, I instead configured fail2ban to check for IPs which crossed a certain threshold after an hour, and then block that IP for 24hours.
It might take a while to find the sweet spot. And it wont be effective immediately. But with a little patience the blocklist started to fill up, and after a few hours the DDOS'ers seemed to have run out of IPs from which to attack.
It makes sense if you think about it. A legitimate human user, will go to a site, and spend most of their time reading content, rather than klicking links. Well, usually anyways.
Also, I've noticed that bots always seem to hit the same URL. Meaning, the main url of the site, and not selecting any links within the site. While I suppose that it would be trivial to configure a bot to act more legitimately and have it actually klick through all available links, I think it kind of defeats the purpose. Or at least most script kiddies won't go that far.
If you know your way around with REGEXP, I'm sure you could come up with some really nicely custom-tailored rules for fail2ban to use in identifiying and blocking ips. So for example, rather than simply counting ANY connection made in the http logs, you could concentrate on IPs which only and continually access the main the url, over and over again.
Legitimate users will most likely click on other links as well, so if you manage to exclude these kinds of accesses from Fail2ban's counting mechanism, you minimize the chance of locking out legitimate users.

  • Which browser is more secure for Mavericks?

Hello, before upgrading to Mavericks I was using Firefox because Safari was no longer up to date. And I really love Firefox.
But here's my question: Which browser is going to be more secure for me?
    Firefox 28.0 or Safari 7.0.2
    Please let me know.
    Thank you very much!

Both are very secure,  it's totally your choice though.

  • Looking for ways to safeguard my Mac against malware - which I introduced - guilty

I was prompted to read this chatline in my search for Mac malware detection software, after someone recommended this.  Reading from someone's post that  “Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.” reinforces that I probably created my present quagmire myself.
I am a a low-tech artist/musician/writer who has only used Macs. I have been currently attempting to set up a new MacBook Pro 15” with software that I lost, after my last MacBook Pro was stolen. Because I don’t have a corporate umbrella and not a strong financial base, I have attempted to download cracked copies of various software through bittorrent. I also inadvertently downloaded Java when prompted, not knowing that I was doing something unnecessary and potentially risking more invitations to malware. After recently installing some programs, and then deinstalling some and disabling uTorrent to open upon starting my computer…I am still getting a lot of pop-ups ads coming into my Safari. I have OS X Mavericks. Reading different suggestions,
I located a Java Plugin in my ‘downloads’ folder and pressed ‘get info’ and ‘locked’ it.  Regarding a comment in the chat room; “Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.”
I just installed ClamXav (and read that it can cause the computer to go slowly). I also went to the Network securities and checked the box “allow downloads from App Store and identified developers” instead of “allow from anywhere”. Otherwise, I can’t figure out how to stop these pop-ups. My Safari browser had been running quite slow. I kept trying to locate and uninstall what I thought was malicious software. Today I turned off the router and restarted it and it works better. I don’t know what else to do? Earlier, I tried to open a document in my google docs folder and a pop-up prevented me from opening it, saying they ‘detect a virus’ call this number. However, since installing the ClamXav moments ago, I was able to open the google doc. Okay, well, just fishing in a murky see because of not having much knowledge about what is okay and what isn’t. Obviously, i have to stop download attempts from unauthorized sources. ‘-))
I have this ‘Mac_Installer’ icon in my downloads folder that I thought was the Java, a gold box within a box icon. Should i trash this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
    11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Is more security needed with no default getaway?

    Hi!
I have base only Arch installation for running one Linux compatible application on it. I wander with two questions.
Do I need to configure through iptables command to get more security or it is unnecessary as I have no default getaway and have route added for two subnets?
If using iptables is addhelpful in my case how can I install iptables (my Arch base installation writes "not found")? I need short instruction.
    Thank you!

ralvez wrote:If your system is connected to a network (LAN) and has NO OPEN ports via services, in other words: you are not running a mail service or Apache server, then just enter "ALL:ALL" in /etc/hosts.deny  and that's all you need.
My system is connected to Internet directly. I have forwarded one TCP and one UDP port. My DSL modem does not allow me to prevent inbound traffic by its firewall (it is not possible to forward ports for special IP addresses/subnets, ports are always open for all IPs for inbound traffic) This is the reason I removed default getaway in Arch and added two needed subnets (It helped me really. My system was overloaded with unwanted traffic. Now unwanted traffic flow is stopped)
ralvez wrote:If you want to have ssh access to that box you can add the IP address of the machine you want to allow to connect to that box in /etc/hosts.allow
What do you mean by "ssh access to that box"?
ralvez wrote:but if you want to "push" the boundaries any further I would add a firewall via IPTABLES
Yes, I want more security as possible but do I need it in my case? (I do not know)

  • Is there any way to may my ipad more secure?

I'm having to change my password at least once a week. I keep getting emails saying my password has been reset am I'm not doing it. I'm them locked out of apple. I have to log on via another computer to reset my password and answer security questions. I've changed my password to many different things, please help me?

It's not your iPad that needs to be more secure - this is to do with your AppleID.
Most likely its some (stupid) person mistaking your email address for theirs, and when finding they can't log in to their (your) account, they try to reset the password, which then sends you the email.
This happens frequently to people with email addresses that are similar to many common names. You'd be surprised how many people can't remember their own email address.
Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do to combat people's stupidity. If you do have am easily mistaken email address as your AppleID, perhaps you could try changing it to a less common one...

  • How to apply row level security against the database administrator

I would like an advice in applying row level security against the database administrator. We need to prevent DBA from editing data in some table rows or have any indication that data was corrupted.
There is no problem in viewing the data so we considered one way hash function or digital signature which will be stored in the same table, but we see following disadvantages:
HASH - DBA may use the same hash function to update the stored data after he changes the sensitive row.
Digital signature - the is a need to manage and keep the private key in a safe place outside of DB
Is there additional ways to achieve the aim?

Does VPD helps to prevent from DBA to edit/view a data in specific rows?Yes.
If I correctly understand, DBA has full access to security policy used by VPD to control the access and can grant himself privileges that I don't want. You can to define which users can be exempt of the politics, for the context or by Grant EXEMPT.
    This includes DBAs.
The simple fact of being DBA doesn't guarantee the exemption.
Everything goes to depend of the VPD config.

  • Service Manager 2012 Agentless Monitoring and SQL Servers More secure distribution

Having both SCSM 2012 and 2012 in my network, I want to monitor the all using a single account which is securely distributed. The problem is agentless monitored servers does not appear in the "more secure" list.
    My Scenario:
I have scsm 2012 installed with the following condition:
SCSM Main DB -> Monitored with Agent (not a management server)
SCSM Data Warehouse -> Agentless monitored
SCSM Workflow and other Management Servers -> Agentless Monitored
Some Test SCSM 2012 Servers with SQL on the same machine -> Agentless Monitored
Some Test and Operational SCSM 2012 Servers -> Agentless Monitored
I want to use a single account to monitor them all, I have set the "Service Manager Database Account" profile (yet to understand why Service Manager Database
Account is actually a Profile!) and in the underlying account set the distribution to "more secure" . As stated above, I have many servers with the SQL running on the management serves and I cannot
configure them in the SQL account.
    Is my scenario wrong?
    Thanks
    YSobhdel

It seems the SQL MP is monitoring the database on agentless managed computers without my permission!
All my agentless managed computers are using the default action account to monitor the SQL!
Any explanation why is that so?
    Thanks
