Is it compulsory to use %@ page language="java" % ....? in JSP

Hi,
Iam testing my JSP application in that i removed the following Page directives
<%@ page language="java" %>
<%@ page import="java.io.*" %>
instead i used the java.io.File in my code directly,which i know is another way of using the java.io.* package directly in the Code.
My program executed without errors.
As "java" is the only language used to compile JSP,can we ignore writing the <%@ page language="java" %> in our JSP programs?
Can anyone please through their comments on it.,
Including the <%@ page language="java" %> is Compulsory or NOT in the JSP page?
Thanks in advance
Rao.,

The tag is not compulsory. The following is a quote from sun's jsp book.
At some point, the language attribute is intended to specify the underlying programming language being used, as below
<%@ page language="cobol" %>
For now, don't bother with this attribute since java is both the default and the only legal choice.

  • How to use VPD in Java/Struts JSP portlet with SSO

    DB = 10.1.0 (Standard Edition)
    Portal = 9.0.4.1
    10gAS = 9.4.0.1 (EE)
    I am in the beginning stages of developing some portlets that will be Java/Struts JSP based. We use SSO and have implemented some VPD security in our DB by creating some views that use SYS_CONTEXT('USERENV','CURRENT_USERID').
    These Java portlets connect to the DB using a defined JDBC connection for the OC4J container they are deployed in. The problem I'm having is that the call to SYS_CONTEXT is returning the user of the JDBC connection and not the SSO user. So far I have been unable to find any documentation that will point me in the right direction to get this configured properly.
    Deployment and configuration are as follows. Deploy war file to custom container on app server. In the configuration of the OC4J contain the app used the containers default JDBC connection using the oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleDataSource class. Max and Min open connections are blank.
    In the portal configuration under Navigator - Providers tab we defined a new Registered Provider. In the Connections tab for the provider we Specify the URL Http://hpsrv02.simsol.com:7777/discovery-portlets/providers. Under "Specify how the user's identity will be set by the Portal..." the "The user has the same identity in the Web providers application as in the Single Sign-On identity" is selected. Under "User/Session Information" User is selected and Login Frequency is set to "Once per user session". Then we created a new portal page and created a new portlet with the new provider.
    Just an FYI I do have Discoverer working with VPD and any report portlet, dynamic page portlet and any other type of portlet I created all work correctly with VPD it is just the java/struts one that is not working.
    So does any one have any insight into what configuration steps I have missed?
    Any help is much appreciated,
    Ed Klinger

    Ed,
    Your java code must get the SSO username (it's just a HTTP header variable) :
    ie: code sample...
    Enumeration e = request.getHeaderNames();
    while (e.hasMoreElements()) {
    String name = (String)e.nextElement();
    String value = request.getHeader(name);
    out.println("<br> "+name + " = " + value);
    if (name.toUpperCase().trim().equals("OSSO-USER-DN")){
    dn_user=value;
    out.println("<br>******** USER DN = "+dn_user);
    Then, the SSO username can be used in the VPD policy.
    Note that there is a difference between the sso username and the database username . SSO username is not known by database (CURRENT_USERID will return a database username)
    Discoverer worked OK in your case with the SYS_CONTEXT (.. CURRENT_USERID) because authentication is made by database user, probably.

  • How to display ArrayList of Vectors using Expression Language in a JSP

    I have added all my values in a vector and this vector is then added to a List. How can I loop through this List, Vector and values in Vector using EL on JSP side. If you have any idea, pl. help with sample code.

    Hi Kavita,
    Well to display each employee information on jsp, you can use following code sceanarion.
    <%
    Iterator it= list.iterator();
    while(it.hasnext()){
       Employee emp=(Employee) it.next();
    %>
    <tr>
    <td><%= emp.getName()%></td>// In the similar fashion you can display other attributes of employee in other td's.
    </tr>
    <%
    }%>Hope this would be helpful to you.

  • How can I change between JSP and Java in the page language attribute

    Does any one know the answer to this? I am trying to Switch between the 2 in the middle of the page. I want to include a file that uses <%@ page language = "JAVA" %> but the main mage uses Java Script. How can I switch it for this one file. I can't find the answer anywhere. Thanks for your time, and please help me. Also can some one post a good link for Session Tracking. I can't find much good information on that. Thanks again.

    Wow this didn't make sense in so many ways. It's truly bordering on nonsense. I think it's written in English.
    <%@ page language="Java" %>This is optional. JSPs don't use any language other than Java. This is known as a JSP Directive. This line will be processed by the JSP/Servlet engine, and you won't see it in your output. If JSP ever supported a language other than Java, this would be where you would change it.
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    // -->
    </script>You can include a block like this in your JSP file. The JSP/Servlet engine will not process this script block at all (unless you include JSP <% %> tags somewhere in there, in which case they will be processed before the response is sent back to the web browser). This script block is where JavaScript goes. This code will be executed on the client's browser.
    This is about as clear as I can make things given how muddled your question is. Please ensure you understand the basic differences between JSP, Java, JavaScript, HTML, Servlet engine, web browser before proceeding. Understand what code executes where, and in what order.

  • Help! Using "Create" action in insert jsp page vs in submission page.

    This is regarding creating a new record using data TAGS:
    I'm in a dilemma as to whether I should use the data source tag <jbo:Row id="myrow" datasource="iss_vo1" action="Create">
    in my first jsp page ( which accepts input from a user) or in the 2nd jsp page (which does the actual commit).
    If I actually create the view record n the first page itself then I get into all kinds of problems if the user decides against saving the record and backs out.[because there is a null hanging record out there]
    But if I don't use it, then I am unable to use my LOVs in the html form.
    Can anyone help me resolve this issue?
    Currently I have used the data source tag
    <jbo:Row id="myrow" datasource="iss_vo1" action="Create">
    in my first JSP page.
    Below is my complete source code for both the JSP pages:
    Source Code for iss_add.jsp:
    ======================
    Please note that in this JSP , it creates a new record and then the user has to click on the "SAVE" button (which calls another jsp "iss_add_post.jsp") to save the changes. But what if the user does not click on the save BUTTON and instead click on the "back" tab. This is where all the problem occurs. How do I get rid of this problem?
    If I try to just use an HTML form without creating a record in this page then how will I use the LOVs?

    I can't actually see any LOV's on your first page so I am not completely sure that I understand your situation. However if you are talking about using the InputSelectLOV datatag, there is no reason why you cannot use that within a html form, without having to create a record in the RowSet.
    The Insert page is by default created without any datasources - just a standard HTML form. The form is submitted and the InsertSubmit page reads the values from the request object, matches the parameter names with your VO attribute names and does your create.
    Your LOV data will be coming from another table so doing a Row tag Create on your Insert page won't make any difference to it. Have I misunderstood something here? I have used LOV's on my Insert pages and I definitely have not created a row in the Rowset anywhere but the Submit pages.
    There is a problem on both Edit and Insert pages whereby if there are no rows in the table for which you have a datasource defined you can get problems, but it doesn't sound as though that is your problem. Maybe I need some more information from you?

  • Using an Array in a JSP page

    The problem is, I'm trying to store String values into an array,
    or a result set and then store them in the data fields on my jsp page.
    When I use my set method such as setCustomerId(values.get(0));
    it sets the variable customerId to the value I want but when I try to
    call the get method in the JSP page to assign it to the data field it
    will not retrieve it.
    Can anyone solve this, I've been at it for days now????

    Thanks.

    Yes. As serlank showed, you can just call the function easily in scriptlet tags
    However the whole point of a tag library is to avoid the use of scriptlets.
    Seeing as you can't use functions, is just to do it as a standard tag.
    ie in your jsp
    <login:verify name="<%= userName %>" password = "<%= password %>" resultVar = "status"/>
    <c:choose>
      <c:when test="${status == 'InvalidU'}">
        <c:set var="nextPage" value="InvalidUserName.jsp"/>
      </c:when>
      <c:when test="${status == 'InvalidP'}">
        <c:set var="nextPage" value="InvalidPassword.jsp"/>
      </c:when>
    </c:choose>In your case, this tag in the tld would possibly look something like this.
    You would then have to write a tag handler class that would call the function you want.
    <tag>
      <name>verify</name>
      <tagclass>com.tags.login.Verify</tagclass>
      <teiclass>com.tags.login.VerifyTEI</teiclass>  (if required)
      <bodycontent>JSP</bodycontent>
    // name attribute
    <attribute>
          <name>name</name>
          <required>true</required>
          <rtexprvalue>true</rtexprvalue>
        </attribute>
    // password attribute
        <attribute>
          <name>password</name>
          <required>true</required>
          <rtexprvalue>true</rtexprvalue>
        </attribute>
    // result variable to return a response from the tag.
      <variable>
        <name-from-attribute >resultVar</name-from-attribute >
        <variable-class>java.lang.String</variable-class>
        <declare>true</declare>
        <scope>AT_END</scope>
      </variable>
    </tag>Hope this helps some, and doesn't confuse too much :-)
    Cheers,

    THis is the error I get.....
    javax.servlet.ServletException: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Connection is busy with results for another hstmt
    I know what that is.. it is because I am trying to open another result set before the first one is closed... but I need that one open cause I need to loop through the ids and run it against the second query??
    Any suggestions...

    I am not positive but it seems from your error message you will not be able to use the nested SQL. Another option would be to store the values of the ResultSet in a Vector (or Array), and then close your ResultSet and loop through the vector or array instead...

  • Error in connecting to database using a datasource in a jsp file

    Dear SDN's,
    I have a program which retreives Data from the Employee table and displays on portal page.
    What i have done is,
    I have created a pageprocessor component, with 2 jsp files one is for data insert and other is for retriving the data from the database table.
    For inserting the records, i have written the code in the Even handling method of Page Proceessor component.
    For retriving the data i have written the following jsp code in the jsp file and this i am calling in PBO of pageprocessor component based on the condition.
    When i try to insert the records it is working fine.But i am getting an error when try to execute the retreving the records in other jsp.
    Please go through the following code and correct me if anything is wrong here.
    <b><%@ page language="java" %>
    <%@ page import ="java.lang.*,java.sql.Connection,javax.sql.DataSource,java.sql.Statement,java.sql.ResultSet,javax.naming.InitialContext" %>

              catch (Exception e) {
         e.printStackTrace();
         out.println("Exception" + e);

    <snip>The subject of this forum is Oracle databases. How does your problem relate to that subject?
    Two bits of advice:
    1) Make sure you ask questions in a forum related to your problem.
    2) If you want to be taken seriously as a professional, drop the MS IM Speak and use the language of the forum. In this forum it is English, which is successfully used by many people for whom English is far from their native language.

  • Null pointer Exception on java plug-in , using Mutity language...

    hi all :)
    I found at plug-in do not suppor Multy language.
    for Example...
    my operating System is Window XP and log in ID is not English ... like Korean, Chinese etc...
    i programmed Web application with Swing Applet(JApplet)... and tested plug-in version 1.2.2 and 1.3.1 and XP plug-in
    Plug-in said that like this.
    Java(TM) Plug-in: version 1.3.1
    JRE version usage 1.3.1 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

    ... etc....
    this message is plug-in do not download class archive in client System cache... because of VM cannot know user.home directory...
    you can find that java plug-in does not support mulity language to see the next sentence.
    "user home = C:\Documents and Settings\????"
    in this reason i found a problem in communication JApplet and java-script by using cookies...
    How can I solve this problem...( i must use Multi language login ID plz.....)
    have a nice day!!!

    since upgrading to Lion, Pages is in German, although Numbers and Keynote are both in English, just as my system is running in English language.
    I have not found out how to change Pages to English, therefore I hope the community can help.
    Thank you all in advance.

    Have you done any maintenance of the system after the upgrading to  Lion??
