Is it possible to convert/compare a JUCtrlAttrsBinding to a number in EL?

Using 10.1.2 JDev -
I am trying to do the following in order to have a binding value control the max length of an input field in a JSP:
          <c:choose>
            <c:when test="${bindings.MyFieldMaxLength gt 60}">
              <c:set var="txtLength" value="60"/>
            </c:when>
            <c:otherwise>
              <c:set var="txtLength" value="${bindings.MyFieldMaxLength}"/>
            </c:otherwise>
          </c:choose>
         <html:text property='MyField' maxlength='<%= pageContext.getAttribute("txtLength") %>' />However, this gives me this error:
Attempt to coerce a value of type "oracle.jbo.uicli.binding.JUCtrlAttrsBinding" to type "java.lang.Long" (null)"
Any way around it?

Actually, I don't think I can - the value is dynamic....
Basically, the situation is one of a master-detail relationship where the master record has a field that describes the maximum length of a particular column in the detail records. The UI exists to edit the detail records. I am trying to limit the input in the UI to avoid a round trip to the server for a validation error message. (Or writing additional javascript to perform the same check)
The initial check (against 60) was to make sure that there was not any bad data in the master record with a number greater than the actual column length in the detail table.
(For some concrete examples, the tables define reference code domains (master) and values (detail). I might have a status code list whose values (in the details table) can be two characters long and another list for job titles whose values could be 20 characters long. Therefore, when editing values in the status code list, I want the text field to only allow the users to type in two characters. But if editing values for the job title list, the text field should only allow the user to type in 20 characters.)
