Is it possible to get Spotlight to list search results by closest name match not document type?

Example: when I type 'wireless info' into Spotlight on my computer the document 'wireless info' is the 29th search result listed. The top hit is a mail message named 'Re: Re: Reset the device, and new wireless info'. The other 27 items in the list above the document I was looking for are things like 'Introducing Portland.doc' and 'Les Amis B&B'. So spotlight is not very good at locating something when you know exactly what it is you are looking for.

Thanks Barney. Your advice was spot on. But today I downloaded the new Yosemite OS and the behaviour is exactly reversed! Spotlight can now be used for searching folders and shows my folder as the top hit, and finder does not show the folder at all in its search results of my Mac. See below:

Is it possible to change the file Kind, e.g. mkv to video and not document?
I can't find where I can change this in Finder or OSX. Is this really hardoded in the OS? Get Info gives me no options, but that is where I set the default apps for file kinds (types).
I hope this is possible because I have lot of document kinds and the arrange by kind view in Finder is thus not very useful.

I tried to play my iTunes and suddenly get an error message that says "The song (name) could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it now?" It happens on all my tunes and each one I select ends up with a "?"

I was not complete clear.
Since you never changed the settings in the advanced section of iTunes preferecnes, you have to chech that your music is really in the location setted in the folders reported in the advanced section. If not you have 2 ways: reset the position of this folders or in the actual disk organisation or in the pointing on the preferences.
If you press the reset button you just give to itunes its default setting as for the position of the music files: probably this will be a good choice if you have never changed any default preference.
But before I would check the folders and see if the songs are really there

List search results in modification order

Now spotlight doesn't seem to search all invisible files.... can anyone help me limp along with a bit of unix please?
I have "find ~/ -mtime -1 -ls" to search for stuff I've touched today
and "ls -lt" to list stuff with most recent first - they seem to work
What I can't seem to do is get the "today" list to sort with the most recent first etc
I think I am looking for something like:
find ~/ -mtime -1 | (sort by date please) | open -f

   UNIX day one?? I find that hard to believe; you seem to be pretty good. It hasn't been but a few years since I asked a friend what those numbers meant in a chmod command he told me to execute. You're using the "find" command in a fairly elegant way. If you're really just beginning, you'll go far!
   Fortunately, someone asked about "sort" recently so I'm up on it. The man page is somewhat spartan so the "info sort" helped a lot. My vote for your command would be:
find ~ -mtime -1 -ls | sort -k 8,8Mr -k 9,9nr -k 10,10r
   The -k options specify fields by which to sort, in order of priority. By default, a line is split into fields at white space, as the shell does. A "-t" switch can be used to specify alternative field separators but white space is what we want here.
   The first field is the month and sort has a nice modifier, 'M', that sorts three digit month listings properly. Given what you're sorting, that would only matter on the first of each month but one might as well be thorough. The next field is day and I sort that numerically. That way, 10 is bigger than 9, since "find -ls" doesn't put zeroes in front of single digit numbers in dates. It does pad the "time of day" field so alphabetical order is the same as numerical order.
   Note that the 'r' modifier must be used on each field. If I put a '-r' option at the beginning, it would be a "global modifier". Those are ignore when modifiers, like 'M' and 'n', are used with a field. It would still apply to the "time of day" field, since no local modifier is used.
   You may observe that this will probably fail on New Year's Day. A special sort command would be required for that but if you're going to be doing this on New Year's Day, you've got more problems than we can fix here!

How can I get iOS "Contacts" to sort search results on a name-first, other-fields-next basis?

Example: I type "jo sm" into the search bar in Contacts on iOS 7, expecting John Smith and Josephine Smolens to appear at the top of the list, as they are the only ones of my contacts whose name matches the pattern "jo* sm*". Instead, they are perhaps numbers 15 and 34 on the list, as other peoples' Notes fields also contain the pattern "jo* sm*".

This does not answer my question. I apologize for my lack of clarity when I tried to explain the problem.
To clarify: I'm not using wild card characters; I was just trying to explain the behavior I get and how it's different from what I want. Let me try again a slightly different way:
When I type "jo sm" into the Search bar in iOS 7 Contacts, I want the first results to be the people whose First Name starts with (or even just contains) "jo" and whose Last Name starts with (or contains) "sm".
Instead, I get all contacts whose Notes contain the letters "jo" and "sm" anywhere at all (which is many many people), and they are given to me in an order that seems random. Therefore, when I type "jo sm", I don't see the contact I'm looking for because he/she is routinely three pages down the list.

Is it possible to get iTunes to list "Sides" of a record? Side A, Side B, etc.?

Currently I have the separate sides listed as "Disc One", "Disc Two", etc, but I'd love it if there was a way to list the sides of a record instead. I just recently got the new Dum Dum Girls record and wanted to list it by side, so the only way I could find to separate it was by "Discs". Anyone know of a way to do this?

No. You're pretty much limited by what you see in iTunes now. Anyway, probably very few people under 30 can remember music media with two sides and it isn't part of their music world (ha, with digital downloads probably even the concept of a formal album will be gone in another 30 years, and almost certainly of a physical CD [certain big computer makers are already working on that with having done away with optical drives on computers]). I just use disc numbers if I feel I must maintain the integrity of the original formatting. Either that or you'll have to use some other field such as Grouping. Whatever happens you'll need to improvise.

Possible to get a ProcessTree list?

Is there someway to have maybe a String or a Process be able to skim your entire ProcessTree of running processes and print them out (sysout, outputLine.setText(), etc) or maybe even end one or something like that?

I have no problem with getting full screen for my apple tv and 3g ipad. There are videos that won't allow airplay, and some sites have it set so full screen is less than great.

TS2755 Updated to ios 7, contacts that I have texted are all messed up, just get a phone number or part of a phone number listed when I text, no name. Not even sure my texts have gone through, no response from recipient.

I have updated to ios 7 as has my daughter. Now when I send her a text all that shows up is her phone number or part of the number, not her name. I'm not even sure she is getting the texts because she hasn't responded at all. She is usually very prompt. Is this a glitch with the new ios?

Actually you are not texting if she has an iOS device. Is the balloon the typing is in blue? Check your Settings>Messages and see if it is activated. You might want to call your daughter and ask her the same thing. Check her contact in your contacts app and see if the number is correct and everything is still there.
Then go into Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. This will not affect data. After that, if iMessage is activated, then try sending her a message.

I don't get spotlight suggestions in search bar

I have the release version of Yosemite installed since yesterday. I never got the famous spotlight suggestions that supposed to be a part of the new safari search engine, until now. Any ideas?

You need to set it up in Safari Preferences.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Search tab.
Select: Include Spotlight Suggestions
By the way. Safari is not a search engine. It's a browser.

Opportunity - Sales Prospect: List search results if more than one match

Hi CRM Experts,
in the Opportunity our users have to enter a Sales Prospect. PC-UI allows to enter directly a Name like "Wolf". But when you press enter after this step the first match is filled into this field. But this can be the wrong Sales Prospect. I want to have a functionality that when the Name is entered and there are more than one match a list of the results should be displayed. Then the user can choose the correct partner.

Yes,you are right actually the pop up window will appear with sales employee and other partner if necessary and suggested by the system.I hope you would have gone thru acquistion from there opportunities and then you would createand clicked on sales methodology(Scroll down if necessary).Actually i dont have access now to the system i will defintely check it out and let you know ASAP.

How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes. I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images. Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title. Why does this happen? Can I make it stop? How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it. Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.

In every version prior to iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File...
In iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original...

Imported pictures list in events as card name and not creating events by date

Trying to import my photos off a canon card into iPhoto. I clicked the card named 100Canon in my finder after selecting import in iPhoto. Instead of creating an event for each date, as there are about 10 days of photos on this card, iPhoto created one event called 100CANON and dropped every photo into that event. When I go into the file on iPhoto and select a picture, it shows the date the photo was taken.
Why did it not create an event for each day? I dumped my iPhone photos in and it separated each day as an event.
Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong?

What have you selected in the iPhoto preferences for items imported from the Finder?

MetroLyrics search not working. Gets stuck at finding search results....

Metrolyrics search is not working for me in my FF. Search always at 'finding search results' but nothing more.
Tried IE 10 and there metrolyrics working fine, so it is something with FF.

Get Spotlight to index a NAS disk?

Is it possible to get Spotlight to index a NAS disk? (Or should it do this normally but it's not working properly?).
I have a NAS disk permanently connected to my Mac (LaCie Ethernet Disk Mini) & every time I do a search on there it will churn away searching but not return any results.
Actually it seems like it might be a bug because as well as not returning any results once I've closed the Finder window it will still continue churning away searching (I can hear the disk activity).
It will continue until I reboot the computer.

OK, the Terminal is a the way that you access UNIX shell commands (the Mac command line interface). Instead of clicking on things you have to type the actual command into the "prompt" hit return, and then the shell executes the command. So you go to the Utilities folder and double click Terminal to launch it. Exactly what you see when it finishes launching will depend on how you have configured it, so it won't be exactly what I see, but there will be some words of encouragement and then the prompt, where you will type things:

The "$" is where you start typing, or you can copy and paste things in also. You would then type:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/YOURDRIVENAME/
You must make sure everything you type is exactly as given, thus you may want to simply copy and paste this:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/
and, making sure there is no space after that final "/" character, type the name of your drive exactly as it appears in Finder. If the name has any spaces in it be sure to surround it with quotes:
sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/"MY FAT DRIVE"/
Then hit the Return key. You will be asked for your admin password, and given a little lecture (this is only delivered the first time you use a sudo command). The password you type is not echoed to the screen in anyway whatsoever, so type very carefully and when you finish hit the Return key again. You'll then get the notice that indexing is enabled. Type the word exit, hit Return, and then quit Terminal.

Is it possible to get intermediate info while running with the Ipod Nano 6th gen?

In the store I was told that the Ipod Nano 6th gen would keep me informed every 500m or every km about my distance, average speed etc.
The Ipod only tells me AFTER the run what my average speed etc was. Not during my run. Is there a possibility to get this info during my run? The store does not know the answer.

Do you have the Spoken Feedback setting set to On under Settings -> Fitness on the iPod?
