Is it possible to run apps concurrently in different "Users" on Mac Pro in latest OSX?

I wish to continuously monitor different folders in Dropbox for "input transactions" destined for my
applications on my Mac Pro, where each Dropbox folder represents different input types from different
sources. It would speed up the process significantly if my monitor program could run concurrently from
each of several defined "Users" on my Mac Pro with OSX.

Thank you for your response. Let me give you some more facts on my situation.
My monitor, running on a Mac Pro, reads folders owned by my clients, where the folders are shared
thru Dropbox with my service. So, yes, my monitor is "reading" different Dropbox member's folders looking for
"input" files to my service. My monitor is programmed (with a list) of the various clients' folders
names in which to search. Obviously, there is some number of clients (and folders) where the monitor
begins to take several seconds (too long) to scan and service, merely due to the sheer number of folders being
scanned. So, if I could create a second User on the Mac Pro, and run another (copy) of the monitor
programmed with another unique list of folders NOT being serviced by the monitor in the first
User, and (here's the problem) both monitors were running CONCURRENTLY, then the total number of
folders (and clients) being serviced could possibly almost double. Then, I could add a third User, then
a fourth, etc. to handle even more clients and folders.
The giant problem here is, each separate User does NOT run concurrently with the others, certainly where
all are logged in and "running". Actually, it appears OSX only executes programs within ONE user at a
time: the one in focus at the time. It so happens that OSX multitasks within that one User the differently-named
programs quite well; but OSX does not (continue to) execute anything in other Users, until another
User is manually switched to. Therefore, in my case, I can only run one monitor in one User at a time, thus ruining any benefit I might otherwise achieve IF OSX ran programs concurrently in multiple Users, another form of multitasking that apparently OSX is not designed to do. My monitors run with Excel VBA, which becomes the name of that program within
one User, so I am limited to running only 1 monitor per User. (Groups don't help.). On the other hand, It might help a little if
my monitor somehow could switch between OSX Users programmatically, rather than manually...I do not want
to sit at my Mac Pro constantly and manually fast-switching between Users to even attempt to solve my problem. Rather, I want
the software to run concurrently 24/7 unattended to successfully provide the service promised to all.
So, because there are lots of brilliant folks that know a lot about MACs and OSX, certainly more than me, I
am wondering IF someone knows how to get OSX to multitask across more than one User at a time, which
would solve my dilemma?? Maybe it's just not possible, I don't know...
Also, would OSX Server edition maybe be better suited to solve my problem? I know nothing about the Server's capability.
I would also hate to have to run Windows on my Mac Pro to solve this. Would VMware/Fusion work here?
Thank you again for taking the time to help...

  • Possible to add apps from two different itunes accounts?

So my family just purchased an iPad and I was wondering if it was possible to add apps from two different user accounts without paying for them twice? My dad synced it up with his computer so all the apps from his iphone were transfered. I noticed that in the app store for the ipad you can switch between different accounts. If I switched to my username would it allow me to add apps that I've already purchased through my iphone or will I have to pay twice?

Yes. My grandson did that to me and I had a heck of a time upgrading the apps he loaded because I didn't have his password. I ended up deleting them.

  • Is it possible to run an application from a user or container login script?

Is it possible to run an application from a user login script or a container login script?
A "Force Run" application object works fine if the user's workstation is setup to auto-load "Application Window" or "Application Explorer" but in this case I'd like to run an application when someone does a manual login (ie. they right-click red "N" and choose "Novell Login...")
Using a User Package's "Scheduled Action Policy" and the Event=Login also does not work when a user logs in manually. This type of Event seems to only apply when the user first logs into the workstation, not at a manual login.
    Thanks,
    Marc

  • How can I transfer a purchased app from my laptop to my Mac Pro?

Okay, here's the problem: I always sync and backup my iPhone on my Mac Pro. However, I recently bought an app from iTunes on my laptop. Both my Mac Pro and my laptop are authorized for my account. However, when I plug my iPhone 4 into my laptop to add the app I purchased (in the usual way, by clicking on the App tab and dragging the newly purchased app into my iPhone home window), iTunes asks me if I really want to delete all of my other purchased apps (forty-something of them). Of course, I DON'T want to do that, but I can't figure out a way to transfer the purchased app from iTunes on my laptop to iTunes on my Mac Pro (where all my other apps live). I called Applecare, and they suggested that I copy all of the folders from my Mac Pro/Users/Me/Home/Library/iTunes/ folder to the matching folder on my laptop, which I did, but to no avail. Do I have to buy the app all over again (on my Mac Pro or directly on my iPhone)????
It just occurred to me that I might be able to back up my iPhone on my laptop in addition to my Mac Pro, after which I might be able to add the recently purchased app without a problem. But if the answer is so simple, why didn't the applecare person suggest this? Has anyone else run into this conundrum?

If you bought an app, if you try to buy it again it will just download the app again. You do not get double billed for the app. So you could down load the app again on your iphone or on your desktop. Alternatively you could use Home Sharing to sync purchased apps, movies, music between the computers. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 explains how to enable/use home sharing.
    I hope that helps

  • HT1222 I was trying to run ITunes 10.7 update on my Mac Pro with Retina display but the message appeared "An error has occurred" so I can proceed with the update. I dont' see any other messages. Any ideas what could go wrong?

I was trying to run ITunes 10.7 update on my Mac Pro with Retina dispaly but "An error has occurred" and I was not able to proceed with the update. The message says "The operation was cancelled. (3072)." I have no other messages. Any ideas why I cannot install this update

Scott's solution fixed the problem.  It would have been helpful if the update message in the App Store had reported that.  I had first tried B Noir's solution -- and received a helpful warning message that a guest user was still logged in to iTunes.  I switched over, logged the guest user out, switched back and the update within the App store worked perfectly.
It seems to me that Apple should invest a little time and effort in making their error/warning messages easier to decipher.  I have to come to the forum every time something happens.  Why not simply have a dialogue window that opens up to explain the most likely issues?

  • Wich mac is better for running Motion ?  iMac 27" retina or Mac Pro 8 core ?

wich mac is better for running Motion ?  iMac 27" retina or Mac Pro 8 core ?

I'm not sure if you've returned the monitor but I had the same problem with my new Mac Pro.
Basically the Dell monitor doesn't identify itself properly via Mini Display Port/Thunderbolt and newer Macs think it's a TV so the wrong kind of signal is sent to the monitor.
It's easily fixed - don't be put off by the instructions below, I've just done it and it takes less than a minute.
    Here's what you do:
Download the Ruby script (click 'patch-edid.rb' in yellow):
    http://embdev.net/topic/284710#3027030
Move the downloaded 'patch-edid.rb' file to your desktop
Open the Terminal app from: /Applications/Utilities/Terminal
In Terminal, type the following and hitting enter  (or copy and paste it into Terminal and hit enter):
    ruby ~/Desktop/patch-edid.rb
    Go to your desktop
Check that a new folder was created - something like: "DisplayVendorID-10ac"
Open the Display Overrides folder at:
    /Macintosh HD/System/Library/Displays/Overrides/
Copy the new folder into the /Overrides directory
Authenticate with your user password (if asked)
    Restart your mac
For the first few seconds after restart it might look like nothing has changed but by the time you see the login screen (or your Desktop) everything will look as it should.
That's it - you won't have to do this again unless you erase and reinstall your mac.
    Hope that helps someone.
    Cheers

  • Running File Explorer as Different User

    Hi all.
I work in a domain environment where we log in with standard accounts for day-to-day work and use separate elevated accounts only when needed, and only to run applications that require elevation.  This works fine for most things in 8.1, but once again,
Microsoft has disabled the ability to run File Explorer with different credentials.  To me, this is insecure and counterproductive.  They tell us we should never be logged on with administrative rights, and I agree with that, but this restriction
is the one thing that makes this impossible.  In 7, I could get around this by running Explorer cmd or PowerShell using elevated (domain) credentials, but now this won't even work!  I get not one but two errors stating that I have insufficient permission
to do this.  Is there any workable solution for this, or has Microsoft finally succeeded in forcing us to add our staff accounts back into domain groups or logging in with elevated rights just so we can manage permissions?
    Thanks.
    A very frustrated server admin

  • HT204053 Is it possible to sync calendars between two different users?

Is it possible to sync calendars between two different users?

    Hi
Installing the drive into the older machine may work, you WILL get a lot of driver errors and the unit may even fail to boot. The other problem is that the drives may not be compatable, the drive in the broken PC is a SATA drive, older PCs had IDE drives with very different connectors.
Your best option is to do as you suggest and obtain a USB caddy and extract the data that way.
Make sure that the caddy you get will support SATA drives (all new ones will).

  • Is it possible to use an R9 270x GPU in a Mac Pro 1,1?

I'm trying to install a XFX R9 270x in a Mac Pro 1,1 (2006 Model #A1186).... The machine doesn't currently have any OS installed, but I'm trying to boot and install off of a live USB of Snow Leopard (10.6)... After some research, it seems like this card is definitely supported out-of-the-box with later models of Mac Pro and later Operating Systems, but I haven't been able to find anything about trying to run it with anything as early as 10.6 on a 1,1. (I know it's supported natively in 10.9).
Currently the machine powers on fine, but no screen image. Diagnostic LEDs on the logic board all appear normal except the "GPU present" LED does not light. I've already tried troubleshooting by installing the GPU in a different PCI-E slot and switched out the GPU for another, identical one...
Does anyone know if it is at all possible to get this card working with this board? I'd be extremely grateful for any possible solution... (Even if it requires booting from a different GPU and installing drivers, updated OS, etc)....

I don't now about that card, but I got a Mac Pro with a Radeon HD 7950 in it, Disc was included with Mac drivers for 10.7/10.8/10.9, said not supported in 10.6, well 10.7/8/9/10 didn't need the drivers.
Tried booting off my Retail 10.6.3 Install Disc... same as you blank screen, & disappointing because 10.6 is better than the 4 later ones put together!
Anyway, cloned a 10.6.8 install to an external drive... sure enough it booted with great video in 10.6.8, so maybe 10.6.8 for you?

  • Running 2 Nvidia GTX470's in a Mac Pro ?

    Hello,
I recently acquired TWO Nvidia GTX470's as a gift.  I would like to run in a new Mac Pro 8-core 2.4Ghz Westmere (2010).  I would like to do this in order to switch easily between AE, Nuke, etc. and Davinci Resolve, so one would be attached to the monitors and power Adobe's 64bit Mercury engine and the other would just be there to give CUDA support for the Davinci. Obviously there are a few issues.
    1)  Since the GTX 470's need 2 power cables (6 pin) can I run off of the Molex connectors in the optical bay (not sure how many are there) and evenly distribute the load by using 1 connector from the motherboard and the other from the Molex for each card?
    2) I have heard the 2010 Mac Pro's have the capacity for 2 PCIe x16 slots and that unlike previous generations these can be any 2 slots you chose.  This would be ideal as I would like to put these doublewidth video cards as far apart as possible in order to keep heat down and let the fans do their thing.  Can anyone confirm this?
    3) If I am forced to provide an additional power supply (even though the Mac Pro PSU is 1000w and should technically be able to handle this additional video card) what would be recommended?  I have heard the visiontek/epower 450w unit (which fits into an optical bay) is quite awful and uses substandard parts as well as kicking a lot of heat back into the machine, so is there another alternative which does not require leaving the side door open or drilling holes in my new Mac Pro?
Thanks for your patience if this topic is redundant.  Need to be as thorough as I can here.

The Mac Pro comes with two power adapters.  So that limits you to one card.  The only way you could power the other card is with an additional PSU.  I've seen posts where this has been done.  Attempting to split the power adapters to drive both cards will exceed the power capacity of the mac pro's power supply.

    I believe slots 1 and 2 are x16 and slots 3 and 4 are x4.
Relating to the issues of both power and slots you might want to read this apple discussions thread.

  • Is it possible to downgrade to Mountain Lion on the 2013 Mac Pros?

That is because both models were released before Mavericks was available. Mountain Lion is their original OS.
The 2013 Mac Pro can not run anything lower than the custom build version of 10.9 it shipped with.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Mozilla are working to prevent Mac users with non-compatible systems from getting the notification about Firefox 4, and also not displaying the "Download Firefox 4" button on http://www.mozilla.com
