Is it SharePoint 2010 Code Bug - breakRoleInheritance ?

Hi all,
I am writing this question to discuss following issue:
Initial Requirement        :
we provided a custom sub site definition with feature which break permissions at site level and new user groups are created to manage permission for this sub site and various lists under this sub site.
4 different type of lists were provided with custom permission as per requirement.
Code used                          :
web.BreakRoleInheritance(false,
true)
à to break the permission
New Requirement          :               some more new lists to be created.
Solution Proposed          :               OOB
Issue
when a new list is created using OOB under this sub site, permissions are shown already break in ribbon menu while all user groups are copied from root site (not from sub site).
If however we click on inherit permission on the new list, root site crash, all user groups become unavailable.
Similar issue found online:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/sharepoint/en-US/2a3525e1-5852-41e1-8815-7e772d23b306/site-collection-unavailable-after-inheriting-permissions-in-a-slist-in-a-subsite?forum=sharepointadminprevious
Solution
OOB
Inherit permissions at sub site level
Stop inheriting permission at sub site level
Remove all not required users/groups
è
Now OOB new list creation will work as it should in normal scenario, i.e. permission will be inherited from sub site level.
Code change
web.BreakRoleInheritance(false)
à
will also serve the purpose and issue will be avoided
Query
whether this behavior is known and not an exceptional one.
What will be the RCA called as, coding issue ?
After a decent analysis, It looks like it’s a bug in the product and not a coding issue.
RCA:
As we have tried all the scenarios, we saw that bug exists only when the value of
clearSubscopes (second parameter) is true. But according to the Microsoft:
“If the securable object is a site, and the clearsubscopes parameter is true, the role assignments
for all child securable objects in the current site and in the sites which inherit role assignments from the current site must be cleared and those securable objects will inherit role assignments from the current site after this call.”

From the errors you got, it is obvoius that you are using a JDBC-ODBC driver. Right? Now, these types of drivers have a lot of limitations, like - you should get the data in the same order as the columns in the result set, etc. The use of cursors may also be one of its limitations since it is a more complex operation than obtaining results set data. What I can suggest to you is to use a Type 4 JDBC driver for your application and read its capabilities and limitations.
You can get a list of drivers for your DBMS at http://industry.java.sun.com/products/jdbc/drivers. And better yet, download the Oracle JDBC driver
Hope this helps

  • Customize Access Requried page with code behind attached to it in sharepoint 2010

    Hi,
    I have modified default AccessDenied page to my custom accessdenied.aspx page and put Request Access button on it and javascript client side redirection to my requestaccess (reqestaccess.aspx, reqestaccess.aspx.cs) application page.
    Here the problem is whenever i try to redirect to custom requesaccess page in _layouts it again shows me accessdenied page since user is not having access.
    I changed requrestaccess to my custom requestaccess through Powershell command (UpdateMapping - 5). I can only modify the UI part of requestaccess.aspx and can not bind code behind where i want user to select combination of what access is required
    on the site, there are lots of controls on requestaccess page e.g. dropdown that fetches data from list\external list and so on.
    I tried many things to attach code behind to requestaccess page e.g. <%@ Page Inherits="codebehind.cs" /> and all.
    Q - How can i redirect user to custom request access page (includes both aspx, aspx.cs) and allow user to interact with custom page? Is there any way OR WORKAROUND to do this in Sharepoint 2010?
    OR
    Can we overide with ElevetedPermissions in UI\CodeBehind and show the application page to user?
    OR
    Can user access application page even though they donot have rights to access site? Anything will do.
    OR
    In short, I need to redirect a user to some .aspx\.aspx.cs page from AccessDenied page, irrespective of user having access or not.
    I hope question is clear enough to understand the issue. :)
    Regards,
    Rahul

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you had an issue about the custom Access Required page.
    Microsoft supported using code behind, but for these pages it seemed some difference.
    However, as a workaround, we can put all the functionality to the aspx page directly.

    Jquery or dynamic code for Image loading on Sp Gridview Pager(Next ,Prev) click functionality on sharepoint 2010.
    i have a dynamic SP gridview contains Previous and next
    buttons for paging.
    page doesn't contain Update panel.
    grdXRPSUsers.PagerSettings.Mode = PagerButtons.NextPrevious;
    grdXRPSUsers.PagerSettings.PreviousPageText = "< Previous Page";
    grdXRPSUsers.PagerSettings.NextPageText = "Next Page >";
    grdXRPSUsers.PagerSettings.FirstPageText = "First Page";
    grdXRPSUsers.PagerSettings.LastPageText = "Last Page";
    When i click on Next or Previous page in the gridview it will take more time and showing progress bar in th below.
    As per my client request, i need to change the
    progress bar to Loading image (Wheel at middle of the grid at fething time).
    How its possible either through jquery or Programming(code behind).
    Please help

    Hi,
    According to your description, my understanding is that  you want to add loading image when click the paging button to load the data.
    I suggest you can use Jquery BlockUI Plugin to show a block image when loding data in paging click event.
    Here is a similiar thread for your reference:
    How to display a loading image until a gridview is fully loaded
    More information:

  • How to Color code the list items if Issue Tracking lists in Sharepoint 2010 SP1

    Hi, Can any one guide me in making the list tasks color coded according to the status of the issue.
    as if issue is Resolved ( green line ), Active ( red line ) etc.
    example as following:
    I have read a lot of blogs, but none have step by step guide. a step by step guide will be excellent. Thanks in advance.
    http://blog.pathtosharepoint.com/2009/02/26/highlight-rows-in-sharepoint-lists/
    http://blog.pathtosharepoint.com/2008/09/01/using-calculated-columns-to-write-html/
    etc
    Thanks.

    Do you have SharePoint Designer 2010 installed?
    Open your site in sharepoint designer
    click lists and libraries
    click the name of your list
    in "views" on the right, click "new..." and give it a name.
    in this new view of the list, click in one of the cells of the actual list of issues, so that the contextual ribbon at the top will give you all the options you need.
    Click "Conditional Formatting" in the ribbon.  This will let you pick "row".
    Then you just have to define your conditions:
    if priority is equal to (3) Low, then pick yellow as the background color.  Do the same type of thing to create the other 2 conditions.

    as there are alternatives, especially in this scenario. You could generate a query using the sys.databases view and let it print out the database name along with the use statement. In addition to this and as the statement has to be run with a high privileged
    account as schema information is secured as well, it should be made safe to SQL injection. In many case in the statements there is just a concatentation of values used. You can easily inject code in here, Also make sure that names / object identifiers are
    quoted with [] in order to allow also special characters like spaces in the names"

    Answer an interesting question?
    Create a wiki article about it!

  • Enable or disable button on a ribbon based on user permissions in SharePoint 2010

    Hi,
    I have requirement to find a way to disable Inheritance, Add and Modify group from permission tab for users who are not added into specific group e.g. Administrators
    I have followed the following article to create a feature but have encountered few issues:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff408060.aspx
    Issues:
    I used the above code as a sample to create a feature and test if it would work. It worked fine but even though i have replaced Location="Ribbon.Library.Actions.ConnectToClient" with my permission locations,
    Connect to Outlook button still doesn't appear when the feature is activated. If i deactive this feature it shows
    Connect to Outlook button even though there is no reference for this in the code!
    I have modified the Elements.XML and have added the following code but it still disables the buttons for a user who has Site Collection Administrator permissions, i just want to disable this for users who are in particular group:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <Elements xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/">
    <CustomAction
    Id="RemoveRibbonButton"
    Location="CommandUI.Ribbon"
    RequireSiteAdministrator = "TRUE"
    >
    <CommandUIExtension>
    <CommandUIDefinitions>
    <CommandUIDefinition
    Location="Ribbon.Permission.Modify" />
    </CommandUIDefinitions>
    </CommandUIExtension>
    </CustomAction>
    <CustomAction
    Id="RemoveRibbonButton"
    Location="CommandUI.Ribbon"
    RequireSiteAdministrator = "TRUE"
    >
    <CommandUIExtension>
    <CommandUIDefinitions>
    <CommandUIDefinition
    Location="Ribbon.Permission.Add" />
    </CommandUIDefinitions>
    </CommandUIExtension>
    </CustomAction>
    </Elements>
    I have also have another issue when this feature is activated even though i haven't removed 'Check' and 'Manage' Ribbon locations, they are also greyed out as shown it the screenshot below:
    I have also created a user control using the following method:
    http://sharepointroot.com/2010/06/18/remove-actions-from-the-ribbon-sharepoint-2010/
    But again i need to restrict it specific user group.
    Any advice how to do this? or which way is better creating a feature or creating a user control? even though i liked the creating the feature as it gives your more control.
    Regards,
    Kashif

    Thanks for your reply Paul.
    I do understand that this is a partial solution and wouldn't stop them completely from doing these actions using different UI but atleast it would remove these options from the ribbon which is causing us some major issues when clicked by mistake especially
    'inherit permissions'.
    We do have governance policies in place and a certain user group can add and remove users from SP site. But the issue we have currently is that when one of these (authorised) users uses 'inherit permissions from parent' site. This removes the unique
    permissions from the subsite and delete all SP groups / permission level in the subsite. In some cases subsite contains confidential information which is then exposed to all the users who have access to the parent site.
    The main button which i'm interested to disable is 'Inherit Permissions' which i believe can't be used from anyother UI apart from the ribbon.
    I just need to know if it's possible to restrict this for some users or group? even if it just removes it from the ribbon only i would be still interested to explore this implementation.
    Any help would be apperciated.
    Regards,
    Kashif

  • SharePoint 2010 Slow query duration when setting metadata on folder

    I'm getting "Slow Query Duration" when I programmatically set a default value for a default field to apply to documents at a specified location on a SP 2010 library.
    It has nothing to do with performance most probably as I'm getting this working with a folder within a library with only a 1 document on a UAT environment. Front-end: AMD Opteron 6174 2.20GHz x 2 + 8gb RAM, Back-end: AMD Opteron 6174 2.20GHz x 2 + 16gb
    RAM.
    The specific line of code causing this is:
    folderMetadata.SetFieldDefault(createdFolder, fieldData.Field.InternalName, thisFieldTextValue);
    What SP says:
    02/17/2014 16:29:03.24 w3wp.exe (0x10D0) 0x0DB0 SharePoint Foundation Database fa42 Monitorable A large block of literal text was sent to sql. This can result in blocking in sql and excessive memory use on the front end. Verify that no binary parameters are
    being passed as literals, and consider breaking up batches into smaller components. If this request is for a SharePoint list or list item, you may be able to resolve this by reducing the number of fields.

  • SharePoint 2010 - Web Analytics - Failed Queries Report

    Hi,
    I hope someone has an answer for this.  For some time, I've had SharePoint 2010 Enterprise edition installed and configured on a 3-tier (3 app, 3 wfe, 3 sql) setup.  While the Web Analytics reports have been running since day 1, the "Failed
    Queries" report has never captured click-throughs.  This has been bugging me for a very long time... the "Failed Queries" report only ever shows either "100%" or "No results returned" in the "Percent Abandoned"
    column.
    Has anyone ever had this issue?

    I've enabled Verbose logging for Web Analytics and this is all I get (after performing a search and clicking on a result):

    There doesn't seem to be any errors associated with this anomaly.  All the reports and data collection processes work.  The loggers capture all of the queries and whether there were results or not.  It just doesn't capture the user's click-through.

  • Sharepoint 2010 Site Web Analytics and Site Collection Web Analytics reports

    Hello,
    On our existing MS CMS 2002 site, we use Google Analytics to track file views, e.g., PDF, DOC, etc.  This is very important for us as we need to know who is looking at the files we provide, how often, referrer, from what location, etc.  Google Analytics
    provides this information when we add the proper GA code to every file anchor e.g.,
    <A onclick="javascript: pageTracker._trackPageview ('downloads/PDF/filename'); "href="/NR/rdonlyres/B3084801-F110-405E-AF75-7737AB8EC4FD/4542/filename.pdf ">
    We are in the process of implementing a new public facing Sharepoint 2010 website.  Will native Sharepoint Analytics provide us who/when/from where etc. data on file views as above?
    Thanks

    Hi ara99,
    In SharePoint 2010, we have improved the set of Web Analytics reports that are available out-of-the-box, which will provide insights into
    the behavior of users of your SharePoint sites.  There are three categories of reports that you will find:
    Traffic reports;
    Search Reports:
    Inventory reports

  • Sharepoint 2010 search service from C# web service and Powershell - passing credentials to search

    Good morning everyone,
    I really need your expert help about the following issue. I ve developed a web service in C#. Its core code has a Powershell script inside which makes a call to SharePoint 2010 search service to make some search queries, and returns some URL of some files.
    In Powershell code I make connection to SharePoint search service using the Farm Admin account. This system works, but given results are not filetered by the user using the web service (I remember you I m using the Farm admin account in PS code)
    How can I use user account to make some queries ? How can I filter search results by user ? In Powershell code I put username and password of Farm Admin account and I know them because I m the farm administrator, but
    what about if I want to pass Powershell code some other user credentials ? Of course I cannot know his credential ..  Can I do it , in which way ?
    Any help is really appreciated !
    Gae

    Hi Gae, if you are using web services, you shouldn't need to add a SharePoint DLL to your project. I would advise against using C# -> PS -> Web Service Call -> PS -> C# if you could go straight C# -> Web Service -> C#.
    Anyways, back to the matter at hand. Do you know what type of authentication your SharePoint server is running? Is it direct NTLM, NTLM over Kerberos, Claims, or something different?
    The following article provides the various types of impersonation available in SharePoint:

    I have verified that the service account for the SPUCHostService is a domain account belonging to the the WSS_WPG local group (I also tried adding to the WSS_ADMIN_WPG group with no more success).  The WSS_WPG
    group has read and write access to the log folder mentioned above.
    I started troubleshooting this when I tried to activate and use the CRM 2011 list control.  And found that other sandboxed solutions also fail which lead me to look at the SharePoint 2010 User Code Host, which will not keep running.
    I have a Sharepoint 2010 enterprise farm with one WFE and one seperate database server all on a single domain.   The WFE is running on Windows 2008 sp2 (64 bit).
    I look forward to your advice / suggestions.
    PS.  I have been working on this for a couple days, and have read many issues that seem to be related, but I have already checked that the Service is now set to automatic, that the service account is a member of the WSS_WPG group and should therefore
    have rights to the Logs folder.  It is also a member of the Local Administrators and the Performance Log Users group.

    Parsing Out Data From Flat File With Inconsistent Delimiters in SQL Server
    Durval Ramos: "Very useful. Good job !"
    Ed Price: "Fantastic job on the code formatting, in-depth descriptions, and robust use of images!"
    AM: "Thanks for presenting multiple approaches to solve the problem. It would be good to see a second part describing the format file."
    DRC: "This is a good article which provides different ways to import the data to SQL, But this article needs some modifications. Suggestions: • It would be helpful, if mentioned on which version of SQL server and Visual studio scenario
    was tested • We might encounter errors while using the format files, for example we get the below error if the format file doesn’t have blank space (character ) at the end of each line Msg 4862, Level 16, State 1, Line 10 Cannot bulk load because the file
    "C:\temp\good.fmt" could not be read. Operating system error code (null). • So it will be helpful if you can provide a sample format file and TSQL script along with the possible output which can be tested and compared. • The sample query and the
    format file is not yielding the right output. Screenshots shown in the article has invalid values (for example ID coulmn has invalid values). Format file need to be fixed to get the right data. • The format file under section “Files With Text Qualifiers” is
    also invalid and the data is not imported properly. • Implementation of import using the SSIS package needs more details about how to make the delimiter consistent, Attaching a sample package would be helpful. "

    T-SQL: Random Equal Distribution
    Jinchun Chen: "Nice."
    JS: "The crucial thing about such a procedure is to check the data before the randomization and afterwards. You might encounter situations where "John Smith" and "John Meyers" might have exchanged their First names
    which is technically correct, but logically and obviously wrong. So make sure that there is one additional check afterwards that makes sure that eventual privicy concerns will not survive the random process. Normally this would not happen, but I have already
    checked this is one of my older blog entries, where we exactly had that problem obfuscating data to make that operational and live data will not be recognized afterwards. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/jenss/archive/2009/04/08/when-is-random-random-enough.aspx In
    addition to this some attributes are sticky to each other like gender and First Name. You also have to make sure that your distribution might change statistically in relation to other attributes."
    Richard Mueller: "Very instructive. Perhaps the See Also section should have more links."
    Ed Price: "Great formatting and topic! Could benefit from more descriptions. Great article!"
    GO: "Naomi, your article is nice. Simple to understand the 'problem' and execute the 'solution""
    Manoj Pandey: "Nice article with a different way to resolve a given problem. I think this can also be done by using NTILE() function. I've added the code in comments section."

    GO: "Great article, I enjoyed reading it. Thank you"
    Manoj Pandey: "I like the idea, but it took me some more time to understand the overall logic as I'm new to Geo datatypes, Thanks."
    JS: "For me not using this sort of things regularly, I don't see the problem and the benefit. I have no doubt that this is a brilliant explanations how to cope with a problem, but for me this is missing yet the red line. More pictures
    would be helpful describing the problem and outlining the results produced."
    Richard Mueller: "Needs more explanation, and perhaps an example. There should be links to relevant references."
    Ed Price: "Good job on the opening descriptions! Could benefit from breaking up and explaining the code more. Images and references would be helpful. Good article!"

    DataCleanUp() Function Implementation in MS SQL Server
    Jinchun Chen: "Good."
    JS: "-Does actually not work for Case senstive areas where I want to remoce certain Upper/lower case characters. This might be not interesting for some people, but is extremely important and relevant to other people. The limitation is
    that I can´t pass multiple values to be removed from the string, right ? Could this be implemented as well as many people wash out their data from unused / unimportant control characters. "I have tested it on a table which has got more than 11 Million
    rows and it executed fine returning the correct results. Since this is a scalar function you will notice decrease in performance." Once you want to maintain the old data and keep the new cleaned up one seperately, you could suggest something like persisting
    the data in a computed column which could be indexed and then help improving the performance. This would not be the case for any adhoc queries though."
    Richard Mueller: "Very clever and also very useful. There should be links to references, for example to explain the PATINDEX function."
    Ed Price: "Great job on this article! Very clear and well executed! See JS's comments for some thoughts about what's possible. Great article!"
    Manoj Pandey: "A good utility Function that I can use and tweak for my future needs, Thanks."
