Is it working? (Backups confusing)

I have some suspicions that Time Machine may not be working correctly on my MacBook Pro. First, I bought an external hard drive and partitioned it. My hard drive is about 100 GB, so I created a 100 GB partition formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and named it Mac.
When I click on Mac in Finder, I find two images and the folder Backups.backupdb. I copied the images to that partition before I set up Time Machine, thinking Time Machine would automatically erase the partition before it start backing up files to it.
When I double click on the folder Backups.backupdb, it reveals another folder named MyName's MacBook Pro 17. Double-clicking that folder reveals 18 folders. One is named Latest, and the others are named with dates (e.g. 2008-01-01-123205, 2008-01-02-000038). After attending an Apple class last night, I now understand that I should have made my partition BIGGER than my internal hard drive, because Time Machine stores multiple backups.
But now I'm confused. I thought Time Machine essentially CLONED my hard drive, and the most recent backup would be exactly the same size as my hard drive (~95 GB). After viewing these folders, it appears to me that Time Machine is working correctly, but my assumptions about Time Machine were wrong.
If my hard drive suddenly crashed, and I bought a new hard drive, would I be able to restore my older hard drive's operating system, files, settings, etc. from Time Machine? Or would I have to start from scratch, reinstalling Leopard, then reinstalling all my programs?
If Time Machine can't restore a hard drive, then do I need to create a new partition and find some other method to clone my hard drive to it, re-cloning it every so often to keep it current?
And I have yet another question. My initial Leopard installation wasn't working too well. Someone who helped me troubleshoot it discovered massive memory problems. He decided one reason for the problems was Time Machine. He said it was attempting to do a backup even though my external hard drive wasn't connected at the time. But someone else told me Time Machine is designed to automatically go to sleep if it doesn't sense an external hard drive.
Can someone tell me what's going on here? Do I really need to turn Time Machine off every time I disconnect my external hard drive?
Thanks.

Hello David:
You have a bunch of questions. I will try to address the ones where I might shed some light:
What you describe in the first part of your post seems to track with my time machine backups (I frankly never looked inside the folders).
Time machine does NOT clone the HD - it backs up whatever has changed from the previous backup.
You should allow time machine all the space you can - partitioning the HD will cause it to - eventually - begin to delete your older backups.
To restore your entire HD from a time machine backup, you would boot from your install DVD and then move on from there (Apple's help menu goes into great detail, if you are interested).
Before Time Machine I used to routinely make bootable clones of my internal HDs. After using Time Machine for awhile, I probably will stop doing that as it is, in my case, redundant.
As far as I know, time machine is not active when no external drive (the time machine backup) is offline.
A question - what do you mean when you say your system +"wasn't working too well?"+ There are many things that might be suggested, but without more information, none that I would make as they might not address the issue.

  • IPhone backup doesn't work (backup can't be saved...) - nothing works!

    First of all, I've read all instructions here and on Apple site, here, and it still doesn't work. It is this error: "Backup could not be saved on the computer" http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2529?viewlocale=en_EN - this of course didn't help, so I looked here.
    I found this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10567963
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10223044 - this especially:
    I found my log file, I erased all my backup copies, then I created new directory with name from log file and I copied mdinfo and mddata with correct names from log. But it still didn't work, all it helped, that log showed error with another file. I tried it two more times (also it is very long process - beetween 1 and 2 hours), and it had problem different files every time. For example:
    2009-11-29 14:41:26.641|AppleMobileBackup.exe|4164:18439528|/SourceCache/SyncApplication/S yncApplication-599.1/Backup/IPodBackupTool.m:_handleReceivedNewBackupFile| ERROR: Could not save file piece for file C:\Documents and Settings\MK\Dane aplikacji\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\d4b40b9e4a4799fb864f974 d36ff987c6f4c484f\723ca7ed73d89a9464360cc94964cbed 84de4724.mddata: Could not open the file at "C:\Documents and Settings\MK\Dane aplikacji\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\d4b40b9e4a4799fb864f974 d36ff987c6f4c484f\723ca7ed73d89a9464360cc94964cbed 84de4724.mddata" for writing, lastError 82
    Interesting thing is that, when fail backup ends, it creates new directory, which doesn't allow to copy any files to it. Only deleting it and creating folder with same name helps to copy mddata and mdinfo files.
    Then i found this - http://www.guruguidedvds.com/iphoneblog/common-problems/iphone-backup-problem-ch ecklist/ - so i changed name of directory drom Backup to Backup-old, iTunes created new Backup directory, but problem remained the same "backup can't be saved on this computer".
    No firewall, only Windows XP default thing, Avira AntiVir Free Version, and about 2,5GB free disk space od C:. Last working backup copy I have is from month ago.
    Now I have iTunes 9.0.2.25 and 3.1.2 firmware, and there is problem. Problably my last good backup was with 3.0 firmware and older iTunes, but I'm not 100% shure.
    Somebody has some other ideas how to solve this?
    Message was edited by: loop_digga

    Ok, I tried everything, last thing I did was downgrading and reinstaling iTunes, also without any good results, so unfortunately I had to do Restore. To be completly shure that previous backup was reason of errors, I set device as new, and now it is ok

  • Incremental backup confusion

    i a reading the RMAN doc i have one confusion in one paragraph please clear me
    How Incremental Backups Work
    Each data block in a datafile contains a system change number (SCN), which is the
    SCN at which the most recent change was made to the block. During an incremental
    backup, RMAN reads the SCN of each data block in the input file and compares it
    to the checkpoint SCN of the parent incremental backup.
    If the SCN in the input data block is greater than or equal to the checkpoint SCN of
    the parent, then RMAN copies the block.
    my confusion is what is checkpoint SCN of the parent?
    tks & regards
    umaisi

    thanks paul,
    actually i am confused checkpoint scn,both are different thing checkpoint occurs due to log switch while scn as you told from oracle doc...!!
    A stamp that defines a committed version of a database at a point in time. Oracle assigns every committed transaction a unique SCN.
    but where i am reading
    If the SCN in the input data block is greater than or equal to the checkpoint SCN of the parent, then RMAN copies the block.
    it should be like
    If the SCN in the input data block is greater than or equal to the SCN of the parent, then RMAN copies the block.
    but why it is written checkpoint SCN ..may be it is some other concept regarding checkpoint SCN therfore i am confused please clear me..
    what is checkpoint SCN?

  • Dont work backup

    I try backup my 3G and didn't work it. Stack up 40% try make this file again again Manifest.plist.tmp 6hours+ and don't finish. Why? Whats problem? I delete old backup, maybe wrong anything but not work it. Help, what to do. Or take back T-mobile or I'store?

    Normally back up issues are from data corruption...try to think of anything you just installed, ie. app, video, song etc...try removing that item and then see if it will sync...then if not try removing ALL apps and then re-installing them, then if that still doesn't work...do a full restore and then chose set up as NEW iPHONE when asked ...do not restore from back up as this will just put the corrupt data right back on the device.

  • Oracle Hot Backup Confusion

    Hi everybody,
    This is regarding a confusions on Oracle Hot-Backup.
    Suppose i have 3 Online Redo Logs and i have put a tablespace in Backup Mode.
    So as a result whatever changes are made,Oracle will start generating redo for the entire block so as to avoid Fractured Blocks.
    Wat my Question is what if,while in the process of doing this all my Online Redo Logs files/members gets filled up how do then Oracle Manage to go ahead and keep recording the Transactions/Changes made to a Certain Block in the Tablespace.
    1.>Does Oracle Perform a Recovery from the Archived Redo Logs once the Tablespace taken out Backup Mode.
    2.>Or is there a reclamation/Re-sizing of On-line redo log file Space from other Segments.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Prosenjit Mukherjee.

    >
    I am not even sure that what the #2 means! Anways!
    Suppose i have 3 Online Redo Logs and i have put a tablespace in Backup Mode.It doesn't matter how many redo log groups you have and AFAIK this has no relation with a tablespace being in the backup mode whatsoever.
    So as a result whatever changes are made,Oracle will start generating redo for the entire block so as to avoid Fractured Blocks.Partially correct! The whole block gets copied only for the first time . For subsequent changes, only the change vectors go into the log buffer and then from there, to the redo log files. This is exactly equivalent to what does happen without a tablespace being not in the backup mode.
    Wat my Question is what if,while in the process of doing this all my Online Redo Logs files/members gets filled up how do then Oracle Manage to go ahead and keep recording the Transactions/Changes made to a Certain Block in the Tablespace.What does this mean exactly? If you fill up the redo logs, log switch will follow making teh LGWR switching from the current redo log group to the next, triggering checkpoint which would make the DBWR write the buffers to the datafile. I am not sure what is the confusion?
    Edit: I apologize , I read this point a little too fast! If all the log files are going to be filled up, database would be hung. There won't be any more transactions allowed as there is no place to write their change vectors anywhere. Sorry , I understood in the first time that you were talking about the standard log switching.
    1.>Does Oracle Perform a Recovery from the Archived Redo Logs once the Datafile is taken out Backup Mode.What recovery? Before the files go into the backup, there is a "global checkpoint" that is performed for them , pushing all of their buffers from the cache to them and then after the checkpoint is freezed for them, yet letting them do all the read/write operations. Once they come out of the backup mode, when the next time a checkpoint is performed, then their number gets synched with the rest of the database. From where the recovery comes into the picture here?
    2.>Or is there a reclamation/Re-sizing of On-line redo log file Space from other Segments.As I said before, I didn't understand at all what this point even means?

The second DVD is bootable but it cannot start anything (it says files are missing, put in the right DVD). I can put in any of those two DVD´s but cant backup.
    To my regret i deleted the "backup partition" ... so i dont have any more files than my - broken - DVD´s.
    What can i do now ?? I wanna reset this Laptop to its factory settings.

    Is it really possile to get every driver and tool i got before with a clean windows 7 installation ??
    Hi Diego:
    Yes, I think that is something that you can do quite easily.  It will be a bit time-consuming, and you will need a fast internet connection, but it is easy to do.
    Go to the Lenovo website where all of the various drivers and support files are found.  For the W510 series, I believe you can find them here: Lenovo Drivers and Support Files.  Download all of the files that you think you will need, and store these on a flash drive (USB stick) or similar.  Then, do the 'clean install' of Windows 7, without an internet connection active.  Before you connect to the internet, shove the USB stick into the side of the computer and run all of the little packages that you downloaded from the Lenovo site - that will install all the required stuff onto your computer.  Then, connect to the internet and proceed as normal.
    An alternate (and possibly easier) way of accomplishing more or less the same thing would be to download the 'Lenovo Update' application from the ThinkVantage Technologies web page, store it on a USB stick, do the clean install of Windows 7, then install the Lenovo Update application, run it, and let it go fetch all the stuff for you.
    I have done clean installs of Windows 7 in the past using both methods.  The first method (fetching all the drivers yourself) gives you more control over the process, but takes more time and is more detail-oriented.  The second method is a lot faster, but gives you less control.  It generally works pretty well, though.
    Either way, chances are that you will probably miss installing at least one required driver - you can determine what (if anything) you have missed by going to the "Device Manager" control panel after your installation is complete, and seeing if there is anything listed there with a question mark or an exclamation point beside it.  You then have to figure out what the missing piece is, then fetch it manually (using the first method) and install it.

  • Wifi Working, Backups Failing...

    I have had a Time Capsule with my Macbook Pro since June, and it had been working smoothly. At Home, I had the Time Capsule as a part of an existing wireless network solely for the purposes of backing up my files and for storage. I'm off to College now, and my backups are Failing. I currently have the TC as my primary Wifi Network with my MAC, a PS3, and my roommates DELL PC all getting their internet from it, rarely all three at the same time. I also have a USB Printer hooked up to it. Ever since I hooked it all up in my dorm room I have been unable to back up my files. I am still able to use it as a hard-drive, printer works fine, Internet works fine, but my backup's always fail.

    Question:
    Has your friends PC accessed the HD on the TC since you setup? Sometimes Windows does not fully relinquish the hard drive once it has been access. Try the following:
    Open Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Click "Disconnect All Users". Now try backing up.
    Be aware that if it has been a little while since TM has backed up, your first backup at the new location will be longer than normal.

  • Dbid/backup confusion

    Hey;
    I'm slowly working my way through the backup and recovery basics document. In it, I find that I'm supposed to be able to identify the dbid from the automatic control file backup name.
    My DBID is:
    SQL> select dbid from v$database;
    DBID
    1364692124
    and verified by the rman output:
    $ rman target /
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.1.0 - Production on Tue Jul 14 16:07:58 2009
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2005, Oracle. All rights reserved.
    connected to target database: OCI1 (*DBID=1364692124)*
    Rman is configured to do autobackup of the controlfile and the format's still the default %F.
    RMAN> show all;
    using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/dbs/snapcf_oci1.f'; # default
    According to the book, I'm supposed to see 1364692124 somewhere in the filename. I don't see that or the date that's supposed to be there:
    $ find /oracle -name \*1364692124\* -print
    $ find /oracle -name \*20090714\* -print
    $
    I then looked through the directory structure under /oracle/flash_recovery_area and found a directory called autobackup. That, at least, has a file that's very close to the control file size and matches the dates of the backups. It doesn't, however, have the dbid in the filename.
    ll /oracle/flash_recovery_area/OCI1/autobackup/2009_07_14

    I assume I'm missing something pretty basic. Can someone point it out to me?
    Thanks.

    Hey;
    It's the oracle book on database backup and recovery basics. The url to the specific location discussing the file format is: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/setup004.htm#sthref238
    The specific section on identifying the dbid is http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/recov003.htm#i1038112 and refers back to the link in the first paragraph.
    Thanks for the response.

  • Exactly How Does Time Capsule Work/Backup Strategy?

    I've got a MacBook and several external drives I want to access wirelessly but I also want to backup all of them. I understand that Time Capsule won't backup any drives plugged into its external USB port. However, will the Time Capsule backup any external drive connected to my MacBook?
    From what I've read it appears that the Time Capsule relies on the computer to backup the drive. If the computer is asleep or off, there's no backup. So it's only backing up my MacBook when I'm using it? Does that mean I should plan time when I'm not using it, to let it sit idle so the network activity doesn't interfere with my use of it? In which case, I could plug the drives into the MacBook at the same time. However, this seems somewhat inconvenient.
    Since I want to use the drives wirelessly anyway, If they were all connected to something like a Mac mini, then everything connected to the mini could be backed up whenever. For that matter, could the Mini itself could be used as the AirPort and network drive for my MacBook and take the place of the Time Capsule (not to mention use as a second computer)? Would this be a better solution for my needs?
    FYI, I already have an AirPort Express.

    It backs up while the Mac is on, and it does it in the background. I have not noticed much difference working when it's on, so I just let it churn away while I do whatever I want to do. Remember that the backup is occurring over the local network only, and that should normally have a lot of capacity, especially over wireless n or Gigabit Ethernet. It's no big deal to use the Internet at the same time as Time Capsule, since your Internet connection is probably a fraction of your local network speed and has no problem getting through around the backup.

  • Formerly working backup CC installation shows "Download Error"

    I just swapped my two workstations, moving the more powerful one to my main office and putting my older, less powerful one in a remote studio. Both had a fully working CC/2014 installation.
    The older system is fine even after some system cleanup and changes, but the new system is now showing a "Download Error" message in the CC Apps panel. It does not appear to be any of the numbered errors; it simply says those two words and try again/contact customer support.
    What is wrong and how do I reestablish the Apps and updating facility for this system?

    EOFWill the above script take the 8-way parrallel backup? or do I need to configure location for every channel separately?
    regards

    This channel can be allocated manually or can be pre-configured by using
    automatic channel allocation.
    The number of allocated channels determines the maximum degree of
    parallelism that is used during backup restore or recovery. For example if
    you allocate 8 channels for a backup operation 8 background processes for the
    operation can run concurrently.
    Parallelism of backup sets allocates multiple channels and assigns
    files to specific channels. You can configure parallel backups by setting a
    PARALLELISM option of the CONFIGURE command to a value greater than 1 or by
    manually allocating multiple channels.

  • Bookmarks lost, restore doesn't work (backup files exist), library empty, power outage this morning, HELP.

    power outage this morning... don't know if Firefox was open
    Now bookmarks gone
    library totally empty
    backup restore yields message: "Unable to process the backup file"
    cannot save new bookmarks

    A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • Lenovo RR backup confusion

    Hello,
            I just used the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery to backup my hard drive.  I'm not sure If I chose the wrong option by mistake but I was expecting it to make a backup on a few cd's.  But what it did was make one cd which it told me to title it "Lenovo Rescue and Recovery startup disc" and then took a long time to create an image of my hard drive which I can see is is saved to "Local" and is 17,122 MB when I view all backups.  My question is 1) why didn't it backup my hard drive to a few cd's, 2) what is the purpose of the startup disc, and 3) can I locate and burn the iso image to a disc and this will be a proper backup?  Thank you!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I have version 4.5 as well.  From the initial display panel, click on Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery, in the left bottom of screen. The back up your hard drive selection  will have  an optiion to  backup to cd/dvd.
    There is a bug in 4.5 version.  When I backed up to cd/dvd, the screen said it was backing up to my 2nd HDD.  The actual backup did go to cd/dvd. My normal backups go to my 2nd HDD.

  • How does the license work? Confused here

    Ok this is a dumb question. But please tell me if my understanding is correct.
    1. SAP Business One 2005 and 2007 have similar license method based on hardware key? We got hardware key, give to SAP, and we got license key back to us and install?
    2. What happened if the system crashed or any other situation where it requires us to re-format the hard disk? Do we need to pay some money again?
    3. What if we change server? Do we need to get new license key again and pay?
    4. For client workstations, do they need to have hardware key sent and get license key as the server does?
    Please let me know on above so that I have a clear understanding.

    Tom,
    If you are an SAP Business One Partner, you can go to the SAP PartnerEdge Portal using your "S" number to login and then under the SAP Business One section you can choose "License Request" and view the FAQ at the bottom of the page with respect to SAP Business One licensing.
    If you are not a partner ... here are the answers .....
    1. SAP Business One 2005 and 2007 are the same with respect to licensing.
    2. If the hardware key changes, which ut may if hardware components change on the machine Business One is installed, you may be required to acquire a new license.  You should be able to speak with your SAP Partner of Channel Manager to give back what you have and get a new one.  It purely depend on of the Hardware ID changes due to the change.
    3. Same as #2 above.
    4. Each user that logs into SAP Business One requires a named user license. The Hardware ID for the License is based on the machine where the license server is installed.
    HTH,
    Eddy
