Is LabWindows/CVI suitable to me more than Labview?

I know some of the LabVIEW gurus might have some insightful words to share on this thread (formerly posted on the CVI forum).
Is LabWindows/CVI suitable to me more than Labview?
Wendyk

There were some excellent response there. I would, however, like to make a few addtional comments.
First, LabVIEW is a compiler. The "source" code is compiled when the run button on the toolbar is pressed. The creation of an exe is done with the application builder that has been available for much longer than version 6. But, since the development environment is also a compiler, you will not see a signicificant improvement in execution speed when building an exe.
I originally started my NI programming with LabWindows v1.0. Back then, despite it's name, it was only available for DOS. I transitioned to LabVIEW when it was released  for Windows 3.0. I had no great difficulties in making the transition. In fact, I had a great deal of fun in learning it and loved being able to "write" a program using only a mouse. Given some time and training, I think any text based programmer can do the same if he or she is willing to do so. Like anything else, there is a learning curve to LabVIEW but I don't think it's as steep as someone first starting to program C++ or VB.
I still do some occassional LabWindows programming but in my instrument control and DAQ applications, I simply find LabVIEW allows me to get the job done faster. If you have some specific imaging or motion application in mind, look over the tools available for each in LabVIEW and LabWindows and check over in those forums to see what they are using.

    Hello Partners.
I am try to  get information about USB comunication with a device using CVI 7.1 or more late, I will need to developed a aplication for comunicate with a device but I  have not  idea of How do this. I know how comunicate with the serial port in CVI, but I never have developed any application using the USB port.
Do you know which are the requirements for do this??
I have read some information and I am seeing that I needed the driver of device for do this but I do not know what is the command line that will need to send in the aplication for comunicate with my device.
Somebory knows how can I do this in my application??
Somebory has some exemplo code in where I can see the commands that I needed to send to the USB port?
Thanks a lot for your help.
I will be to hope some suggestion.

    hi,
    think there are three possibilities:
    1. the product comes with an own driver & api
    2. the product comes with an FTDI-device to communicate over
2.1 you can talk with the device over a virtual COM (rs232)
2.2. you can talk with the device over  the D2XX-layer (look at the FTDI-webside: "D2XX Programmers guide....")

Before using the conversion utility to create a new instrument driver wrapper, please visit ni.com/idnet to see if a LabVIEW Plug and Play instrument driver is available for your device. The Instrument Driver Network (IDNET) provides support for more than 3,000 different instrument models from over 170 different instrument vendors.
    Recommendations
This utility was created for developers of C-based instrument drivers who wish to provide a LabVIEW interface, but do not develop a LabVIEW Plug and Play driver. By developing the C and LabVIEW interfaces together, it keeps the components synchronized, and eliminates the need for customers to create their own LabVIEW interfaces. Vendors should distribute the LabVIEW wrapper files with the associated VXIplug&play or IVI instrument driver, so that end users do not have to visit multiple web sites to download the complete driver.
If you are not an instrument vendor, we recommend that you use this utility only if you have instrument driver expertise. Access to the instrument driver source code is preferred, in case you need to edit the C instrument driver in LabWindows/CVI.
After generation, the wrapper VIs should be tested with the instrument.
    Instructions
Once you install the software, simply access the utility from the Tools>>Instrumentation>>Import CVI Instrument Driver...menu in LabVIEW. This software replaces the built-in tool and provides feature enhancements.

  • Is LabWindows/CVI running faster than LabView?

A colleague told me that LabWindows/CVI is much faster than LabView. And I make a mistake if I would go on using LabView. So he tried to convince me of LabWindows/CVI. What are your experiences? Which program is faster: LabWindows/CVI or LabView?
    mara

It all depends on what you're doing. I've used both (LabWindows since v1 and LabVIEW since v3), and in my instrument control and daq applications, I don't see any. I think LabVIEW is faster to develop in and that's the main advantage for me. NI has a benchmark here if that helps at all. Either LabVIEW or LabWindows is a good choice. If you're an experienced C programmer, you might be better off sticking with the more familar CVI but if you're not, LabVIEW should work just fine.

  • CVI Error : After more than 2000 times connect to database.

    Dear all:
After connect to the database more than 2000 times ,CVI shows below error,( I also used the DBdiscoected to  free system resources )
It seems out of memory, but when I checked the memory usage with resource track , memory leak is not found .
and the physical memory of PC is enough .
All of your advice is appreciated.
    Tks

    Hi -
I just setup an ran a simple program which connected and disconnected from a databse 2500 times without error. My program was simply a loop around DBConnect and DBDisconnect, checking for errors after each call.
Please tell us more about your system. What version of CVI are you using? Also, what is your OS? How many connections do you have open at a time?
Also, from your screenshot, I see that it mentions "Native error code -2147024882". According to this KnowledgeBase article, native error code messages mean that an error occurred in the database itself, and the code is being passed back to CVI to be handled. From a quick google search on this error code, it appears to mean "Not Enough Storage is available to complete this operation".
If you are able to condense your code into a version that we can run, which reproduces the error, you can post it and we'll take a look at it. Also, I would recommend looking more into the -2147024882 error in regard to the database that you are using.

  • Visual Studio or LabWindows/CVI?

    I have a bit of a dilemma.
I currently own Visual Studio 2010, IMAQ Vision Development Module 2013, and Measurement Studio (not sure of version). I currently do all of my programming in VB.net. Because IMAQ VDM is stuck in .Net framework 3.5 and there will be no further .net development by NI, I need to plan for the future. My applications need run on Win 8, 9, 43, or whatever my company decides to migrate to from Win 7.
My understanding is that the NI modules I currently own will work with LabWindows/CVI. Correct? I also believe I can use them with C++ using the VS IDE. Is this also correct?
Within my applications I do a lot of interfacing with Excel, writing text files, and interfacing to non-NI devices (cameras, DAQs, scanners, etc). I am able to do these things pretty easily using VB.net using vendor-provided SDK's.
Therefore, my question is this...given the investment I have in software already, do I gain anything by migrating to LabWindows/CVI? What do I lose?
I should point out that regardless of the path I choose I will need to bone up on my programming skills in the corresponding language.
    Thanks for all your help!

    Hello Steverino!
Here are some advantages when using LabWindows/CVI over Visual Studio, which make the product more suitable for various industry-related applications:
You are correct, LabWindows/CVI integrates with the NI platform: NI hardware and software, like TestStand or LabVIEW (e.g. debugging source code from one software to another, seamlessly).
NI hardware and third-party hardware connectivity.
    OpenMP support.
    CVI integrates with intrument control.
CVI Run-Time benefits from User Protection.
Run-Time checking (e.g. for uninitialized variables).
Scientific User Interface Controls and GUI Editor.
    Advanced debugging capabilities:
    Remote debugging support from ADE.
    Real-Time debugging support from ADE.
Memory leak detection using the LabWindows/CVI Resource Tracking Window.
    Just-In-Time debugging.
Deployment: build custom installers and patches that you can ship as stand-alone easy-to-use installers.
LabWindows/CVI libraries: Advanced Analysis, Toolbox, Connectivity (Network Variables, Network Streams, DataSocket), etc.
Support for LabWindows/CVI Toolkits: SQL Toolkit, Vision, PID, RT.
    Regards,
    - Johannes.

  • How to add the rows formatted as table headings, Tables headings are repeated when a table spans more than one page.

    Hi all,
i am facing problem while generating Test Result word document after successful execution of TestStand.
    The Problem is :
i want to add rows Formatted as table headings, table headings are repeated when a table spans more than one page(marked as Red).
    Example:
    Page  No. 1
    |     Test case Number  |  Test Step number      |
    |      100                         |            100                   |
    Page  No. 2
    |     Test case Number  |  Test Step number      |
    |      200                         |            300                   |
Test Result word document should generate with Table headings(marked as Red) in every pages of the document, but i am not getting as per above example.
    Please through light on this.
    Regards,
    Susa.

    Hi Santiago,
Thank you very much for your valuable reply.
i want to generate MS-word report for TestStand after successful testing using MS-word2000.
Test report contains Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status.
In my program i have customized all  fields i can able to generate test report which contains Verification engineer name , test mode, test date, start time, end time Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status.etc....
To put all values of test case number, Test step number, Actual values, Expected values and Pass/Fail status in to table for each time, i will
insert a row into table every time values arrives, once the table exceedes its page size it moves to the next page, next page should start with table row header  but it start with  values of above said parameters.
so i'm not able to repeat table row header for each page.
Please find the attached file for your reference.
Attched file expected.doc  :   This file contains what i wanted to generate MS-word report. Here table row header "Test Case Number and Test Step Number " is repeated in second page.
Attached file Actual output from source code.doc   :  This report generated from the source code. Here table row header "Test Case Number and Test Step Number" is not repeated in second page.
Do you know any property to set "repeat as header row at the top of each page" using MS-word ActiveX in CVI/Labwindows.
i think this information is sufficient for you,
Still if you need some information please ask me.
    Thanks
    Susa.

  • How to control more than one instrument via different interfaces at the same time

Hi, I am new to Labview.  I am working in a project where I have to make a Automated testing tool . So, here is the set up -  I have a Chip on a board to which there are several instruments connected namely Agilent power supply, Agilent pattern generator, oscilloscope,Dmm and Thermotron. All these instruments will be connected to the host computer via ethernet, GPIB or RS232. I have to write a program on Labview where the program  should be able to communicate with these  instruments  at  the same time  and show the ouput  on display unit . I have to run the program once, should be able to view the ouputs. So, Is it possible to write such program in Labview??.  I have  downloaded  few instuments  drivers. Is it possible to combine those intrument drivers and construct a new VI which would be able to control all this ??   Will it be easier to program this on Labview or  I should  go for Labwindows/CVI  ??.
Please mention some useful sites or tips (if u know) for writing program.
    Thanks in advance
    shasanka

    Hi Shasanka,
ofcourse it's possible to control more than one instrument at a time.
You should use the VISA routines to access all your devices. Every device get it's 'address' as 'VISA resource name'. This resource name contains information on the used bussystem and the (internal) device address (i.e. GPIB devices have an address number).
So I suggest to read the manual and to look at the examples that come with LabView!
And (from your question) it seems you should take the 3 or 6 hour seminar as well! (Look at www.ni.com -> academics.)

  • Using Windows API in my LabWindows CVI code

    Hi all.
I would like any and all help. I am developing on LabWINDOWS 2010 and am trying to use the Windows API, particularly the multimedia APIs, in my CVI code. What I am trying to do is audio development, only it has to be in .NET or Visual C++ platform. I have developed the code and UIR, but when I build the solution it tanks on me. Of course when I use MS Visual C++ 2008 or 2010 there are no errors and I could use MS Visual C++ to develop my application, but the development of the user interface and the controls is much more straight forward with CVI and there are more controls to work with than there are with MS Visual C++. Most of the errors that I get are related to the following header files: "MMSystem.h", "devicetopology.h",  and the "endpointvolume.h". When I try and build a skelton project with no controls or indicators on the .UIR I get the errors like:
    "devicetopology.h"(2301,20) Missing parameter type.
    "devicetopology.h"(2301,40) syntax error; found '*' expecting ')'.
     "MMSystem.h"(151,1) Unrecognized declaration.
"MMSystem.h"(850,96) syntax error; found 'identifier' expecting ')'.
That is just a few of them, but they typically say the same thing. I have included the header files and libraries in my project, and  have made sure that they are in the CVI "sdk" directory. I have tried example code that have these header files and the result is still the same. I know that I should not have these type of issue, at least I don't think I should. Like I said I could use as much help as possible of figuring out what is the matter. Did I install the CVI improperly? Are there patches that I need to actually use windows APIs? I am attaching to this post my code and the code I downloaded from a LabWINDOWS forum. When I ran the code from the forum I got the same errors.
    Thanks in advance.

    Humphreyy,
thanks for the tip. I tried it but it did not work, the same errors were present. Are there any other suggestions. I have racked my brain to figure out why this is happening and have come up with nothing. I am also getting a "Warning" message concerning the "KsMedia.h" file that says "Warning: Excess characters in multibyte character literal ignored." The warnings trace back to the "typedef enum" section of that file. Could that be causing a ripple effect that produces the error I am seeing in the other header files I mentioned??
I could really use your help and any more help that is available. I really don't want to use Visual C++, because this software is going to get more sophisticated and is to be used in NASA Langley's VISTAS simulator, an environment taylor made for National Instruments software.

  • I cannot acquire more than 5 Channels with the SCAN_op function

Any time that i try to acquire data from more than 5 channels in labwindows CVI, i get an error that says "BadchanError - A channel, port or counter is out of range for the device type or the device configuration." I am using the function call:
    SCAN_Op (1,14,chan, gain, buffer2, 1400, 1000, 100);
where buffer2 contains 1400 elements, chan contains 14 elements (0-13) and gain is an array of 1s. I initialized the card by using
    Init_DA_Brds (1, &b_code);
do i need to perform more initializations? how can i make this function read 14 channels of data?

    Greetings,
It appears that you are using the SCAN_Op function correctly. Do you receive this same error if you execute the SCANsingleBufSync.PRJ example with more than five channels? Additionally, what hardware are you using?
    Let me know.

  • Sequence hangs after LabWindows/CVI DLL execution

Hi there, I've written a DLL in LabWindows/CVI that I loaded and executed it successfully in TestStand, with the LabWindows/CVI adapter.
The weird thing is that, when the adapter is configured to debug DLL code with an external instance of LabWindows/CVI, the sequence just hangs after the DLL finishs executing its code.
If I turn off external LabWindows/CVI debugging, in the adapter configuration, it doesn't hang but other strange errors occur, even crashing TestStand!
I reviewed my DLL source code and I didn't find anything problematic. Is it possible that the DLL is overwriting a reserved memory region, thus breaking TestStand functionality?  Have you ever seen that?
    Thank you very much.

Yes it's possible that the call is corrupting memory. The most likely way for that to happen is if the prototype specified in TestStand does not match what actually exists in the dll, or if you write more bytes to an array passed in from teststand than the step is specified to be passing from TestStand. Double-check that your prototypes match and that you aren't writing past the end of any buffers or accessing any pointers incorrectly.
    Hope this helps,
    -Doug

  • LabWindows/CVI is taken out of NI's front page

I have an impression that LabWindows/CVI is listed in NI's front page as LabVIEW.
    But it's not.
You have to click into Products & Services to find LabWindows.

As mentioned by D_Biel in your post, we value the input we receive from the Idea Exchange, but there is a balance among various sources of feedback including bug fixes and compatibility. It can take time, but features do get implemented as shown with the release of CVI 2012. There may be more ideas than we have the bandwidth to implement, but I definitely think that the Idea Exchange is a step in the right direction, laying a foundation we can build off of for receiving user feedback, but with anything there is still plenty of room for improvement.
