Is logical DSN names possible with Times Ten?

Hello,
We are trying to implement a quick switch from a staging database to a live database to avoid a service down time. Here is the scenario,
DSN: DB1 - Live
DSN: DB2 - Staging
We start loading staging databse at 5.00 a.m which takes about 20 min. During that time all the services are connected to DB1. Once the data is staged we want to flip our services to connect to DB2. Is there a way to do this seemlessly as there are several outside clients who can't change the DSN name every day? Essentially all the clients will use a logical name like'DB', which should point to the live DSN. Is this possible at all in TimesTen?
TIA
Bhaskar

Well, by definition DSNs are 'logical' names. Consider some typical DSN entries in sys.odbc.ini:
[DB]
Datastore=/data1/somedir/db1
[DB1]
Datastore=/data1/somedir/db1
[DB2]
Datastore=/data2/someotherdir/db2
The DSN names that the application connects to (DB, DB1, DB2) are just logical names which map to actual physical databases (as specified in the Datastore attribute). In this example both DB and DB1 point to the same database while DB2 points to a different database.
To make DB point to the same database as DB2 instead of DB1 you just need to change the value of the Datatsore attribute and voila. Any new connections to DB will actually connect to the database /data2/someotherdir/db2.
So, it's really all about manipulating the entries in the ODBC.INi file (typically sys.odbc.ini).
Is this what you were after or did you have something different in mind?

  • Unable Update SQL Developer with Times Ten in-Memory DB Extension 1.2.1.1.0

SQL Developer 1.2.1 Build MAIN 32.13 (Windows XP)
We can't Update SQL Developer with Times Ten in-Memory DB Extension 1.2.1.1.0 :-((
We did the same actions as described in tutorial
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/viewlets/tt703_sqldev_install_ext_viewlet_swf.html
In addition to tutorial we have "Log In" window
"To download Oracle Times Ten in-Memory Database Extension
you must enter your Oracle Web Account user name and password"
This window was not displayed in tutorial...
We try to use three our OTN accounts and the result
was the same - we was asked with "User name" and "Password"
again, again, again and again,,, :-(
Is it a bug or a feature?
Mayby we didn't understand something or did something wrong?

    Hi Simon,
I found cause of update failure! It was the HTTP proxy setting.
I turned off "Use HTTP proxy server" checkbox in SQL Developer -> Tools -> Preferences -> Web Browser and Proxy.
After this action SQL Developer was successfully updated with Times Ten Extension.

  • Is Oracle database Compatible with Times Ten database?

    Hello All,
I need to use a temporary database in Oracle for some months.
Later on, I will need to migrate all data to a Times Ten database.
    1. My doubt is if Oracle and Times Ten databases are compatible with
each other (specially when having this kind of cases) ?
    2. In case the answer is YES to question 1, I would like to know if there are some
restrictions in that compatibility (type of data, any other issue, etc)
    Best Regards
    Rubén

    Ruben,
There are two areas you shoul look into regarding your project: SQL functionality and data types. TimesTen 6.0 supports a subset of the SQL features and data types currently available in the Oracle DB; also, TimesTen supports some native numberic data types that are not available in the Oracle DB.
If your end-game is to use the TimesTen database, then I would start with the TimesTen API and SQL Reference Guide (http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/timesten_doc.html)
Use the SQL functionality documented for TimesTen and pay attention to the common data types. For example, VARCHAR is handled differently from VARCHAR2 (where trailing spaces exist), DATE and Timestamp are handled differently, etc. Additionally, keep in mind most numeric values are declared using NUMBER in the Oracle DB, but not in TimesTen.
If you are an existing TimesTen licensed customer, please let us know your support ID(CSI) and we can contact you with more information on our future release plan to address SQL and data types compatibility.
By the way, what's the timeline for your project?

  • Less frequent backups possible with Time Machine?

I'm new to Leopard and Time Machine. Is it possible to set Time Machine to update less frequently than every hour? I'm working in an environment with multiple Adobe apps open at any given time, and I've noticed TM activity affecting my work (response slowdowns). It would be nice to be able to choose how often the iMac gets backed up. Right now, I'm running TM manually.

    Hello again em:
Just a note. I am sure that the process that VK suggests does what it purports to do. I recommend, however, that people avoid (like the plague) anything non-Apple that changes Apple's operating system software. That is an opinion, but I have NEVER had serious problems for many years. These forums are replete with stories of how add-ons or haxies or +"small changes"+ have caused grief.
    Barry
Note to VK - This is not a personal criticism. I am raising the point that changes like this (even simple ones) work - until the next software update.

  • Mail backup possible with Time Machine?

I've done enough reading here to get that Time Machine does not back up the mail portions of the /var directory. As a matter of principle I configured mail services to use an alternate store location located at the root level of my server boot volume. Time Machine is backing that directory up, but just as it would be in the /var directory, some of the sub-directories are not accessible because of permissions being allowed only to _cyrus That makes it pretty difficult to check whether the contents of those folders are being backed up.
I'm just wondering if changing the permissions of those directories for read-only access for a specific user would allow Time Machine to read them and back them up properly, or if that might cause problems in other aspects with mail service in general??

Seriously mate don't entertain it. All the Apple Trainers I've spoken to don't recommend using TimeMachine at all for backing up anything on OSX Server. I happen to think its fine if the Server is simply a File or Web Server or even presenting Shares as TimeMachine points for workstations. If OD and Mail are involved I would not entertain it. Even if you managed a back-up, the real issues will come when and if disaster strikes and you need to restore. There are far too many posts on here detailing the mayhem caused by restoring a mail or ldap database from a TimeMachine backup.
IMO any effective backup strategy should not involve fire-fighting a restore. However it's your server and only you will really know what's best for it.

  • OS reinstall - possible with Time Machine?

I want to re-install Leopard on my MacBook (did the upgrade thing from a previous version and have a few 'issues').
Having backed everything up to an external FW drive using Time Machine, can I re-install a fresh copy of Leopard and then restore data and applications from TM; or will TM restore system files etc and potentially corrupt the fresh OS install?

That's a fairly drastic step. You might be better off trying to resolve the issues with 10.5.6.

You've actually got several options, depending on what's wrong and how drastic you want to be.
You can reinstall just OSX from the install disc, using the +Archive and Install+ option. That will move your current system into a +Previous System+ folder, load a whole new copy of OSX, and bring forward most or all of your other data. Then you'll need to use either SoftwareUpdate or the "combo" update to bring OSX up from whatever version is on your install disc to whatever version you want. Then carefully check the +Previous System+ folder for anything missed, before you delete it (it will take several gb; and deleting it will be lengthy).
Or you can do a complete +Erase & Install+ (often called a "clean install" by ex-PC types). That will, obviously, erase your entire HD. Then do the Software Updates or "combo". Then you can use TM to restore your Home Folder, any 3rd-party apps, and other data from TM. You must specify to TM, of course, just which items you want to restore, and do that individually.
Do you want to revert to a previous version of Leopard (like go back to 10.5.5 from 10.5.6)? If so,
you can do a complete system recovery from a Time Machine backup +from before the upgrade+. That will restore your entire system (unless you'd excluded things from TM). That will, however, remove any changes made since that time.
If you then want to recover the changes to your home folder, you can then use TM to restore only your home folder, via the TM interface. If there are things outside your home folder you need (like 3rd-party apps), use a similar procedure.

  • Times ten not scaling how to speed up.

    Hello Everyone,
I am doing evaluation of times ten to use it as cache but it is not scaling in my test bed:
From the http://vimeo.com/28397753 demo it seems it can do 5 million transaction per minute by in my test bed which is 4 gb machine it is taking sweet 140 seconds to insert 100 K records almost 120 times slower!
I have only one table with a integer column and only one index on that column which is not unique.
    TermSize: 1024m
    PermSize: 2024m
We want a scallable solution that can go upto 250 Million records in a table (and we will have two such table other will be smaller) is it possible with times ten?
Our queries will generally requst 50K results and we will have 12 fields in this table numeric and integer that we are going to separately index.
Look up also on a one integer table are taking about 100 milliseconds.
    I am using a TimesTenDataSource ds = new TimesTenDataSource();
    String URL = "jdbc:timesten:direct:TT_1121";
I tried doing batch inserts of 25,100,500,100 rows per insert with not much improvement.
Is oracle times ten even fit for such a case?
    thanks and regards,
    sumit

You say that your machine has 4 GB RAM but you have allocated over 3 Gb to TimesTen. That's fine if there is pretyt much nothing else running o nthe machine but if you have otjer things (such as Oracle DB maybe?) running o nthe machine at the same tiem then you are likely running low on memory. Are you seeing significant page in and pageout acticity when the test runs? If so this will seriously impact performance.
    Can you please provide:
    1. A description of the overall hardware and software environment that you are using for the test.
    2. The exact TimesTen version (output of ttVersion) command.
    3. The DSN configuration (from sys.odbc.ini)
    4. The actual table (or cache group) defintiion including any indexes.
    5. Details of the Java test program. In particular; are you using parameterised INSERT statements? Are you preparing them just once and executing them many times? How often do you commit during the bulk load? etc.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Use of Times ten database with Oracle Forms 11g

    Hi,
We need to use some caching / pre-fetching solution with Oracle Forms 11g.  Is there a possibility that Oracle Forms 11g can be used with Times ten database.
    Regards,

We have never tested TimesTen with Forms 11g but we suspect there are issues that may prevent if from being used.
    Sorry.

  • Logical System Name of an Idoc Sender

    Hi,
I have seen that For Idoc senders the the Logical System name associated with the sending Client has to be SAP+System Id(For example SAPE05 where System Id = E05).
Is it mandatory? If so how can I have multiple clients in a sender Idoc systems sending data?
    Regards.

The logical system nameing convention is:
    <System ID>CLNT<Client>.
If your system is ADM, client 070, the name would be:
    ADMCLNT070.

  • Times ten extension

After installing the times ten extension sql developer is totally trashed. NOTHING WORKS. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WORKS. I downloaded SQL*Developer w/JRE and installed. Worked fine. Then I imported my old connections. Worked fine. Then I installed the extension. Nothing works. I keep getting stack traces. I am running Windows 2003 server.
I just installed times ten from the CD I got at OpenWorld. (Which comes with the old version of SQLDeveloper that is incompatible with times ten).

I reentered did my search and found the answer. You all need google or something to improve searches. It wastes my time and yours.
    Anyway, thanks. :-)

  • Is it possible to configure Time Capsule to work with Time Machine (MBP) and Genie Timeline (PC)

I have an Apple Time Capsule (2TB) and I need to configure it to work with my MBP and Time Machine and also back up my a PC with Genie Timeline Pro 2013 (or any other suggested PC back up software).
Setting it up to work with Time Machine is simple enough but the PC access is proving to be difficult.
    http://www.genie9.com/support/KB/KnowledgeArticle.aspx?KBID=198
I followed the above steps but still can't connect to the network drive.  I have reformatted the TC and will be walking through the steps again.  My concern is that the two different operating systems (Win8 and Mavericks) can't share the same destination drive.
I have created two user accounts with drive sharing activated.  One in my name for my MBP and the other in the name of my partner for her Dell laptop.
Should the Time Capsule be partitioned?  Can it even be partitioned?  When I use Drive Utility it can't see the TC.  The only way to connect to it seems to be via Airport Utility.
On a seperate note the TC Router Mode is set to OFF (Bridge Mode).  I have connected it to the ADSL modem/router (WiFi Off) via the WAN port.  All seems to be well.  Am I loosing any useful functionality by doing this?
The internet settings are set Connect Using DHCP.  I have no issues but I am not really sure what it means and if I should be using other settings.  The ADSL modem/router seems to have all the PPP0E settings.
The WiFi on the TC has been set up with a 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz network as well as a Guest Network.  I then plan to introduce 2 Airport Express (MB321LL/A). One will be an access point for AirPlay and the other a wireless extender with AirPlay.
There is also a Canon WiFi printer that accesses the 2.4Ghz network.  It has an Ethanet port so I am wondering if I should disable the wifi connection and cable it and if so to the TC or the DSL modem/router.

Lion, 7.6.1 firmware and iCloud offers remote access.
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
To do it without the iCloud service your issue is static public IP address.. if you have one this is simple to the point of trivial. If not it is very hard, as Apple did not put in a standard dynamic DNS service.. (ensuring you were roped into their cloud accounts). Static IP from your ISP is the best solution.. if it is possible go for it.
Then the actual protocol for access is AFP, so the only device you can do this on is a Mac.
Do you have the TC as the main router?
If you want any other kind of access, or to avoid icloud use vpn.. which teamviewer is a kind of.. but buy a real vpn router, and bridge the TC.. you can then vpn into your network with full security and get windows access via smb..

  • Data Services communication with SAP - physical/logical server name

Iu2019m having trouble connecting Data Services to SAP.
    Environment details:
Data Services version 12.2.1.2 on Windows 2008 SP2
ERP and SRM on Windows 2008 (database SQL Server 2008 SP1)
Repository on SQL Server 2008 SP1
All servers (SAP and Data Servers) have had logical systems defined over the physical system names and they use these logical names to communicate with each other.  The Data Services server, hence has two names (logical and physical) and two corresponding IP addresses.
The problem weu2019re having is that when the SAP server communicates back to the Job Server it needs to use the logical server name and corresponding IP address.  Currently it is using the physical server name and IP address, causing communication failures.
When I run the host_name() function within Data Services it returns the physical host name.
Is there a way to determine how Data Services identifies itself and whether this can be manipulated?  Is it possible to configure Data Services to run in a logical environment?
Any thoughts or commends would be appreciated. Thanks

Looked at this from another angle.  We were using Direct Download transport method which processes in the foreground and uses the SAPGUI for communication.  It seems as though it was how SAPGUI communicates with the SAP server on Data Services behalf that was causing the problem.
We managed to motivate to get a share setup between the SAP server and the Data Services box which allows us to use Shared Directory transport method.  This also allows for background processing - eliminating the part of the SAPGUI communication that was causing the problem.

  • Does Times Ten work with External Flash array

Does the Times Ten In Memory DB support external Flash Arrays or is it completely dependent of Internal Memory. I was told it did not support it in the past, as this changed recently.

TimesTen supports normal RAM for primary storage and 'disk' (or anything that presents as a disk, such as SSD etc.) for persistent storage. There is no explicit support for any other kind of storage. If the O/S had the capablility to present an external Flash Array as normal RAM then in theory it would work with TimesTen. But of course it would be far, far slower than RAM so there is probably little benefit in doing that even if it were possible.
