Is my Hard Drive safe when connected directly to the Base Station?

I just recently bought the new Airport Extreme with USB to connect and external hard drive.
I've successfully connected everything with no problem. However, I see on the Airport utility-> Disks-> that there are 3 Users connected. I setup the Hard Disk to be accessed only by users with accounts. And I only have 1 user account. And on the finder I see that the airport mounted 2 HD. 1 is the main base station drive and 2 is named after the account name. I also hear constant hard drive activity even when my macbook pro is off.
So my question is..
1. Is it normal to have 3 users connected? Logically, 2 might sound right because 1 to the main ext (shared) drive and 1 to the account. But 3 is weird.
2. Is the hard drive activity normal? Or maybe there's really 1 person connected to my base wirelessly without my knowledge?
By the way, I used WPA2 encryption, so I don't think someone is hacking my base.

jrie818,
The location you're describing (Airport Utility->Disks), and then under the Disks subtab therein will reveal the hard drive(s) and the partition volumes it has, but not the user accounts. User accounts are found under the Accounts subtab. Are you referring to there?
For the hard drive activity you could add the volume(s) to the Privacy tab of the Spotlight system preferences pane if you'd prefer for your computer(s) to not index the drive.

  • In a WDS, how can I force a satellite base station to connect directly to the main station

I have 2 Airports Extremes (Call them A and B) and a Time Capsule set up in a WDS. All are recent vintage at V 7.6.1 firmware. Airport A is the main base station connected to the internet via ethernet to a cable modem. The satellites, Airport B and the Time Capsule, are in opposite corners of the house. Airport A is in a media closet in the middle of the downstairs, Airport A is on the east end of the house, about 40 ft away, with a wood door and drywall wall in between. The Time Capsule is on the west side of the house, with just the floor/ceiling in between it and Airport A.
When the WDS is functioning normally (most of the time), both satellites connect directly to the main station, and Airport Utility describes each connection as Excellent. But at least once a day, one of the satellites will connect to the other satellite, not directly to the main station. When this happens, Airport Utility describes the connection as Good or Average and my online throughput decreases by about 5 fold in both directions. The only thing that works every time to get it back to it's proper setup is restarting all three, which is really a pain.
Is there any way to force the satellites to connect directly to the main station?

So is it possible to connect a non-USB Mac to an
Aiport network through the ethernet port in any way?
    Yes
Using something like the Linksys Ethernet Wireless Bridge WET54G.

  • Why is my hard drive full when I only have the operating system loaded and nothing else?  No pics, music, nothing...It's the 60 Gig hard drive on the air built in late 2010.

Why is my hard drive full when I'm only running the operating system and nothing else is loaded?  No music, pics, nothing! I understand the hard drive is small at 60 gig, but I can't believe the os would take up that much space.

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB free on the startup volume for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved. ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root. Back up all data now. Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid. After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • We are trying to connect a new WPS printer to our network. We go into Airport utilities and then hit the Base Station drop down to access Add WPS printer. However, when you hover over the Base Station menu, nothing is highlighted. Suggestions?

We have tried to add a WPS Canon Pixma-Pro to our Airport Extreme network. However when we are in Utilities and try to access the Base Station drop down menu nothing is highlighted. Therefore we can not click on the Add WPS Printer title. I'm sure it is some user error that we are overlooking, but extremely frustrated. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Now try the Base Station menu again

  • My husband bought an imac for the first time.  We backed up our separate itunes libraries on external hard drive but when it was retrieved, the 2 libraries had merged and they only appear in my husbands area.  How do we split them back up again?

Really need some help here.  We got the guys at PC World to back up our old computer onto and external hard drive, but our libraries merged.  I've tried retrieving the whole thing from the external hard drive but can't seem to identify any files to retrieve.  If I could copy the whole thing into my area, we could both just erase the things from each others' libraries that we didn't want.  We are imac virgins, and need some advice!

if it's content purchased from the iTunes store we're talking about, the following script will help to tell the files apart:
    Track Down Purchases
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.
for content you added manually (i.e. CD rips), i don't know of any easy way once the libraries were merged.

  • 10.6.1: Can't resolve FQDN when connecting via WLAN / Airport Base Station

    Hi everybody,
after hours of work and having read many helpful topics in this forum (and other) I've successfully setup a Single Signon Environment for my home office. It's a dual core macmini server running 10.6.1 and only mac clients.
The server is connected via switch to my airport extreme base station. This airport station uses PPPoE to connect to my ISP and it has the DHCP service running, handing out the clients' IP addresses. The server and the switch have all static IP addresses.
    My issue is the following:
Whenever I connect via wifi or vpn using my MBP, I am not able to "bind" to the server (via system preferences : users : login setting) using the FQDN. The error is "can't resolve address. -2200" Instead it only finds myserver.local - and then I am able to set up my wifi connected client.
However, when I set up the client with the .local address I am unable to get a kerberos ticket for my users. The ticket viewer says, that it can't resolve the address for myserver.mycompany.private
I was able to get afp or ical to work on my vpn or airport connected clients when I used the server's IP address instead of a domain name - but only with kerberos turned off and with other problems.
I've heard that if everything is configured right, the server should show up in every clients' sidebar with its FQDN and NOT the bonjour name. Right now it shows only the bonjour name - even on the clients connected via Ethernet.
The other strange thing is that when I log into my client system I still have to authenticate with ticket viewer in order to get my kerberos ticket. Usually Single Signon should work with the login window, right?
I really don't know what else to do. I double checked my DNS settings and everything seems ok. I entered the FQDN of the my server in the airport stations' DHCP settings as "LDAP server" - nothing changed...
Do I need to use the server's DHCP service instead of the airport station's DHCP? And if I do this, how to I turn off airport's DHCP? It does not seem to be possible when connected via PPPoE to my ISP.
I am unsure what to do in order to get things to work. Anybody out there who can help?

Hi Davidh and thanks for posting!
I had 3 DNS entries in my client's network settings - one was the server and the other 2 were from my ISP. Removing the ISP's DNS entries and keeping the server DNS IP solved my kerberos issue. Wow!
I'd never thought that it won't work with more than the server given as DNS entries. I'll need to check this with my iPhone later, because I had a similar issue with that device yesterday when trying to connect via VPN.
    Thanks very much!
    Still one question:
The sidebar of my clients still don't show the server's FQDN - but only its bonjour name. Is this right? I read in another forum that the client's sidebar should show the FQDN if everything is configured right.

You had already done "Repair" and "Rebuild"?  These usually takes scores of minutes or hours.
Does the Library on your external drive work from the external drive?  Navigate to it in Finder and double-click the name.
If it does, delete the problem Library, empty the System Trash, reboot, Verify your system disk using Disk Utility (and might as well repair permissions while you're at it), reboot, test the external drive Library once more to confirm it works properly, then close it and copy the Library to your system drive.  When the copying is done, double-click the Library (now on the system drive) and see what you get.

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

I have itunes directory on an external hard drive and want to direct a new installation of itunes on windows 8 to use it. I tried holding down ctrl and clicking itunes and after many tries got it to work one time. When I went back in later it had reverted back to a blank version of itunes and I cant get ctrl to work again. Any other ideas?

This is sometimes caused by a problem with the iTunesPrefs.xml file, normally found at C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunesPrefs.xml. Try dragging this to the desktop and trying again.
Alternatively the problem may be that you have McAfee AV and it is preventing iTunes from updating the same file and thus causing the problem. See Why does iTunes delete my itunesprefs.xml? for details.

I believe my ipads hard drive corrupted when i went from my macbook to a pc...I can get to the screen with cord and itunes but cant get past there to desktop of ipad...Any help would be appreciated....

Try using this article to help with your iPad not showing up in iTunes---
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538     -This deals with the device not being recognized in iTunes for Windows
The following steps work well with iPod but i would try them for help with your iPad issue:
Try connecting your iPad to another USB port directly on the computer. Verify that you're connecting it to a high-powered USB 2.0 port on your computer to be sure iPad is getting power. If you're connecting to a Windows laptop computer through USB, connect the laptop to a power outlet before connecting your iPad. Also, see iPod not recognized when connected to Windows laptop over USB to be sure that your USB ports are supplying enough power.
Avoid connecting to an external USB hub. If a hub must be used, make sure the hub is USB 2.0, and that it has its own power supply. Also, make sure the hub is connected to a high-power USB 2.0 port on your computer.
If the issue persists, try disconnecting other USB devices from the computer such as printers, cameras, scanners, external hard drives, and USB hubs to determine if there is a conflict in the USB chain.

  • How do I find a hard drive connected to Airport Extreme Base Station?

*Apple Says:* "If your base station supports it, you can connect a USB hard disk to the USB port on your base station and computers on your network (both wired and wireless) can connect to it to access, share, and store files and data."
Cool. So I followed the instructions. The drive is recognized by the base station and listed in the Airport Utility. It looks like it's ready to go...
So... How do I access the drive? I don't see it on my desktop, it's not under network. I've tried "Connect to server..." and browsing, I can't see the drive, anywhere. Yeah, I've searched the crap out of this issue on google and this message board as well as apple support knowledge base. I'm sure this is a simple issue and I'm just missing the obvious. Help me out.

Hello Timothy Uhl. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Try the following to mount the disk...
o Click on the Desktop to enter Finder
o Go > Connect to Server...
o Enter 10.0.1.1 for the server
    o Enter Disk Password
    o Connect
If this still doesn't solve the problem, let's double-check your disk sharing settings...
AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) - File Sharing Setup
Either connect to the AEBSn's wireless network or temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to one of the LAN ports of the AEBSn, and then, using the AirPort Utility in Manual Mode, check these settings:
    Disks - File Sharing
o Secure Shared Disks: <With disk password | With base station password | With accounts >
(Note: Choose "With a disk password," or "With base station password" if you want to secure the shared disk with a password, or choose "With accounts" if you want to secure the disk using accounts.
If you choose to use accounts, click Configure Accounts, click the Add "+" button, and then enter a name and password for each user that will access the disk.)
    o Guest Access: <Not allowed | Read only | Read and write>
o Share disks over Ethernet WAN port: (unchecked)
(Note: Select the "Share disks over Ethernet WAN port" checkbox if you want to provide remote access to the disk over the WAN port.)
o Advertise disks globally using Bonjour: (unchecked)
    o Workgroup: <Windows workgroup name>
    o WINS server: <WINS server IP address>

When looking at my "About This Mac" it says that I have 60gb of space left on my hard drive, but when I go into finder to find all of these files there is not 300gb worth in anything I search, even searching, "All files on the Mac". Help!?
It says I have over 150 gigs of video on my hard drive. But I have gone through and deleted almost all of what shows up, still it says there is roughly the same amount on the hard drive. Where are these files? I want to delete them so I can have my hard drive clear.
    Thanks for your help guys!

    Quote from the article.
Time Machine in OS X Lion includes a new feature called "local snapshots" that keeps copies of files you create, modify or delete on your internal disk. Local snapshots compliment regular Time Machine backups (that are stored on your external disk or Time Capsule) giving you a "safety net" for times when you might be away from your external backup disk or Time Capsule and accidentally delete a file.
So what makes a notebook any different then a desktop, other then with a desktop you might have your tm backup drive connected all the time.
The object here is to not indiscriminately delete files you need or want to keep. I personally have never deleted a file I wanted to keep.
In essence a backup is for catastrophic failure of your system. So it can be restored once that failure has been fixed. Not because you go in willy nilly and start deleting files.

You can't connect directly to the external drive, but should be able to use iTunes Home Sharing via the laptop.

  • Tried to replace RAM but now computer not starting...PowerMac G5 dual 2.0 - are my hard drives safe? What's up?

Hello - I tried to increase the RAM in my old and trusted Power Mac G5 (dual 2.0...2005)  tonight and now I'm in trouble. It has only 4 slots for RAM.  It came installed with 2X256 and 2X512 ram cards.  I bought 2X 1GB of Ram from Crucial.com after sending them the specs of my computer they assured me it was the right RAM.  I installed the RAM just how the youtube tutorials instructed....  I replaced the 2 256 cards with the new 1GB cards and closed up the computer......note:  I also "dusted" the inside of the mac very carefully and lightly with a barely damp rag.....
I plugged her in and the power button light immediately went on but the computer did not.  The button wouldn't respond to being held down either.   No sign of a startup or a fan noise. Nothing on the screen, no signal.... Nothing.....  So I tried reversing the order of the RAM, I installed the 1GB along with the 512's.  Nothing again, just the light turns on when I plug her in.  Then I returned the RAM to the original configuration.....again NOTHING...just the light on.
I reset the SMU.  (little button underneath the RAM area)  I haven't tried to reset the PRAM yet, but I'm pretty sure that will not work either as she is not starting up at all....just the light is on...  I didn't get a noticeable shock or static spark during the entire operation either. ****....whats up?
Are my Hard Drives safe in there?
Any ideas out there?  Thanks in advance to your advice, T

Ouch!  That was not the way to get dust out.  Running that damp rag anywhere near an electronic component, even if you were wearing a properly grounded writs strap, was way dangerous.
Did you lay the machine on its left side when you replaced the RAM?  That is much safer (though the recommendation only shows up in the service documentation, not the user guide, for some reason).
What I would do at this point is to remove all RAM and try to power the machine.  If other stuff is OK, you won't start but you will see the lunar LED flashing in a repetitive pattern above the power switch.  If you don't see that happening, then things are exceptionally serious.
