Is my operating system secure?

Of course I do not use Leopard (10.5.8) as my main OS. My main OS in Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and I am very well aware that Leopard hasn't recieved security updates for a year now.
So here's what I have done: I do not use Java or Flash as it is pointless on Leopard. As I virus scanner I use Clamxav. I don't use this OS for anything very important. Just to develop some small apps for Leopard and Tiger and as I'm a web designer I want my website to work well on Tiger and on Leopard, because about 6% of people still use those two operating systems.
I do want to stay on Leopard for at least a year more. I am very well aware that I can develop from Snow Leopard to Leopard and Tiger, but just incase I use an older operating system for that. I think it's a little too brutal how quickly Apple drops the support for older operating systems, especially when many people will be stuck with the OS. ( They support one OS for 6 years, but I think 8 years would be better).
The reason why I am asking if my OS is secure after using Clamxav, disabling Java, never installing Flash and also using Firewall (which I'd even use on Lion for example) is because I also use it as backup computer (I do store photos and important documents for me only).
As a default browser I use Safari, because TenFourFox G5 works strangely. Always warns me about javascript and that it might slow down my system, which is annoying.

If it is as up to date as your system allows and as sensibly protected as you indicate, it is fairly secure.  The older your system, the less secure it will be, but having said that I still have not read of virus problems with older macs.
You can always your transfer photos and documents etc onto a memory stick or a portable external HD as a protective measure and top it up every month or so.
As far as I know there is nothing wrong with Javascript ... which should never be disabled.  Java is another matter, something Apple is trying to rid itself of any way.

safari, chrome and firefox cannot verify identity of secure websites after upgrading to 10.7.4,  apple engineers have tried multiple things including operating system with no success

There are several threads about this problem, most notably one called 'Invalid Certificates' is over 4 pages long.  Many of us have experienced difficulty connecting to banking and other secure sites.  On my Macbook Pro, I cannot get to my banking site with any browser, however I can get there on my iMac using Safari, but get the 'Invalid Certificate' notice with FF and Chrome.  The problem started after the installation of 10.7.4.  I have sent a message to Apple--they will be dismayed to hear that I cannot complete an order at their online store!

  • System.Security.VerificationException: Operation could destabilize the runtime during code coverage run in visual studio

I have a unit test that basically does the following:
Creates an app domain using minimum priviledges.  The MarshalByRefObject that is living in the app domain, loads another assembly to execute.  This new assembly basically takes in a data object defined in a separate assembly, and returns a

  • T61p Client Security Solutions + Password Manager + Two Operating Systems

    Greetings.
I am running both XP and VISTA on my T61p.  I use the client security solutions password manager feature for websites and network shares.  Since my model has the biometric scanner instead of entering the user ID and password I just swipe my finger.  The issue is that when I first setup client security solutions it creates some system key that I assume is tied to the security chip hardware.  Once I have it setup and working under one operating system it fails to authenticate me under the other operating system.  It brings up a windows that says, "Verify Identity" / "reason for authentication:  system key recovery"  Why am I not able to use this feature under both operating systems?
    Thanks for your time.

    Thanks for the reply.
I was using an older version of RnR, however, after the attempt to re-install, I upgraded to the latest version.  It still errors out.
As to your second guess, I was hopefull this was the fix, I had forgotten to go through the registry.  I deleted an empty CSS folder in the Common Files folder.  And found several registry entries which have now been deleted.  I don't believe I missed any.  But unfortunately no luck.  I cleared the chip again as well.
If it adds any clues, the system update was not working either.  But the language fix posted on the forums resolved it.  If I remember correctly the first time I tried to reinstall CSS it did ask a question/comment about language not matching.  I could be wrong, however, there have been alot of attempts.
I spoke with tech support on the phone with the only suggestion being a clean restore of the laptop which I would like to avoid.
    Thanks again.

  • HT5639 Are there inherent security risks for installing windows operating systems on a mac?

Just wondering if I use "bootcamp" and install Windows operating system and find out one of the main reasons I switched to a Mac is because of security issues. I also need to know if I can operate the Mac version of "Microsoft Office" without installing the Windows Operating System.
    Thanks tech savvy people!

Windows concerns are in Windows, OS X in OS X. They do not co-exist because only one system is operational at a time.
Office 2011 is the OS X version of the suite. Look for it here.

  • Security Problems with new operating system (5.1)

Using the new operating system you can use the camera when the ipod is locked. When you do this it overides the 4 digit security code giving full access to your ipod without entering the code. Surely this should not happen as the security of your ipod or iphone should not be compromised in this way. It needs a fix. Anyone else noticed this?

Are you sure you are just not trying to access the iPod before the time you set the screen-lock to engage has passed?
If the time period is set for say one minute and then you tell the iPod to sleep, you can still access the camera and then the whole iPod. But you can simply do that anywhap by jus sliging to to unloack.  If the time period has not passed you do not need to enter your passcode.  Othr users have forgot this and raised the same issue as you.

I am running OS 10.5.8 on an iMac. There is no security update issued for this operating system - it only covers 10.6. Is my comuter vulnerable? Do I need to do anything?

I'm still not clear why Apple only issued security updates for 10.6 and later. I assume they think we should all update our operating systems or maybe they are just focusing on the majority of users?
Apple has had a long standing policy of only supporting the current and previous operating system releases.  Whether they decide to make an exception for even older releases is anyone's guess.
You can send them feedback to express your opinion.
Or does the new Trojan not affect older OS? I'd like to know , if anyone has information.
As far as is known, it does affect older unsupported releases.  Disabling Java in your web browser is the current preventive approach (and that is a community derived approach)

The latest flash player release is 11,0,1,152.
Can you upgrade to this version and see whether the crash stil exists?
Go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer to download and install flash player.
In case you need direct link to installer/uninstaller, please go to http://forums.adobe.com/message/3952360#3952360 to find them.

My computer crashes repeatedly and I get the message pages are not responding do you want to stop, and/or shockwave is not responding do you want to stop. I have Windows XP Service Pack 3, I am having the same issues whether I use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. My HP Pavilion Desktop has 504 MB of Ram and I am using high speed internet connection. Because it was crashing so much, I used the uninstall program for Flash player to uninstall Flash, I checked my registry and removed anything I saw that was Flash. I then uninstalled Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, then I reinstalled the most recent versions from their websites. I did the same for FlashPlayer and Shockwave Flash. I went to the Adobe website and had them check to see if it was working and it shows I have FlashPlayer 10.3.181.36. The page that shows  which version of flash player goes with Windows XP states that I should have 10.3.181.34 (This is what I thought I had before I updated, I was having the same problems). When I went into my computer to see what version I have, it shows 11.5.9.620 Activex and both Flash Player and Flash Player Object is listed as 10.3.181.34. My firewall for Windows is set to medium. I also am running Norton Internet Security. It takes anywhere from 3-6minutes for some of my games to load, and I have to refresh at least 3-4 times in order to play. When I do start to play it freezes frequently and I use escape to free it up. This has been going on for a month. I have no idea what to do. I am not very computer savy and I have been learning as I go.

  • After secure erase of disk ready for sale of MBP I needed to input my AppleID and password in order to install operating system. is this a problem for the buyer?

I ran a secure erase of the hard disk ready for sale of my MBP 2007 (Snow Leopard). But then I needed to input my AppleID and password in order to download and install an operating system (Yosemite). The screen the showed the Welcome opening as it does for a completely new machine. It is ready for a new owner to register and use his or her own AppleID. Will the fact that the OS was downloaded under my AppleID mean that the new owner will still be able to update it as necessary when the time comes?

You can't sell that computer with an OS newer than 10.6.8 on it(or 10.7.5 if you originally got Lion from a thumbdrive and not the Mac App Store.) Any higher version will be tied to your Apple ID.

  • Is Ipad1 still secure considering the company has not kept the operating systems up to date for this model?

Is Ipad one still secure considering Apple has not provided it with the proper operating systems?

With Firmware updates, Apple will usually offer instructions to complete the update, since they require an additional step to complete. It sounds like you haven't finished the Firmware update completely.
Since it's your computer and investment, I wouldn't risk it and would visit your local Apple Store and let them solve the problem. In the meantime, read this link from Apple:

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro running on OS 10.8.2 to a Linksys EA3500 router and when I go to click on the set up icon I get an "unsupported operating system". Any suggestions on what to do? The Linksys site is useless. Do I need some kind of upgrade?

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

  • Can't access safe mode to delete System Security fake anti virus virus. HELP.

Hi, our SL500 has become infected with "System Security" fake anti virus software. We have tracked down how to remove it.
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/system-security-malware-t222291.html
However when we get to the "reboot your computer in safe mode" (see instructions below) we can't as this is not possible.
We have tried F8...........Repeatedly . And also  Run->msconfig->BOOT.INI->/SAFEBOOT . But to no avail . Actually we get a pop up stating that Windows  can not find said command and have we typed it in correctly . Please could some one help us as this is driving us insane . One last thing . A computer WITHOUT a "safe mode " option, isn't that kinda of unsafe and a tad.....
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for trying to help. Sadly, I followed the instructions and it rebooted to the blue screen again.
It's going to have to go to Apple for repairs now. I'm out of options.
I am wondering how much easier it would have been if I'd created a time machine restore point. I got what I deserved for failing to do that, but I'm doubtful even that would have worked in this case. It does seem to be because of that piece of widely reported malware that didn't want to leave without causing damage.
The most frustrating aspect is the safe boot. I get to the desktop but without any menu, finder or dock. It seems to be similar to the problem below...
    http://www.macsmarts.com/?p=109
But that's for Tiger. I tried that to no effect.
Like I said, it's going to have to go to Apple now because I've done so many things I don't know if I'm just digging myself a deeper hole.
    Thanks again for offering help.
