Is nls_lang=nls_language+nls_territory+nls_sort
Hi,
please clarify : To change the logon-user's locale preferences and language settings should i give like
"alter session set nls_lang=a_b.c"
or
"alter session set nls_lang=a nls_territory b nls_sort=binary"
does both are same ?
If YES then what how should i define the characterset for new session.
If NO then what should i give in alter session to change
a. characterset of new session
b. language of new session
c. territory of new session
d. sort method for new session
thanks n regards

'NLS_LANG' is an environment variable. You cannot use an 'ALTER SESSION' command to change it.

DB의 nls_language,nls_territory 값
Unix 환경 변수 : NLS_LANG=KOREAN_KOREA.KO16KSC5601 로 셋업되어 있는데, 데이터베이스의 lanuage와 territory는
AMERICAN, AMERICA 로 되어 있습니다.
CHARACTER SET
show parameter 시
-. nls_language : AMERICAN
-. nls_territory : AMERICA
select * from nls_database_parameters;
-. nls_lanuage : KOREAN
-. nls_territory : KOREA
-. nls_characterset : AL32UTF8
입니다.

Sorry :-)
Now i found an interesting metalink-doc (ID 241047.1), which says:
"You really need to do a "create database", if you use the DBCA and use a "seed" database (= included datafiles in page 2) then the NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS will be AMERICAN AMERICA seen this is actually a clone operation of a existing database (who is using AMERICAN AMERICA), not a real "create database". Seen NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMTERS take precedence this is not a problem at all and simply irrelvant."
What does this mean? How can i avoid to clone a database and really do a new "create database" over the dbca gui?

Error ERR-1802 Unable to find item
I was using HTML DB to execute a query. The region expected an item and based on
that item to retrieve a Clob and output to the GUI. Here is the PL/SQL code:
begin
if :P11_X_ID is null then
return;
end if;
for x in (
select column_value
from table( query_cfile( cursor( select theClob from demo where id =
TO_NUMBER(:P11_X_ID) )
) ))loop
htp.prn(x.column_value);
end loop;
end;
When I first time ran a page I was able to get the page back without any issue;
however when I entered the second ID, I got "Error ERR-1802 Unable to find item
id "187846523855309166"
OK
Unexpected error". Then I tried running the same page on different browser
(switch from firefox to IE ) and entered the second ID I was able to get the
page back. The same problem happened for the second browser, that is, if I
entered another ID to search, I got the same error.
And I turned on the trace using p_trace=YES

THECLOB CLOB
The query just took the CLOB content and divided it into table of varchar2(4000) base on chr(10). The query worked well in PL/SQL when I replaced htp with dbms_output.
The branching was the default one, "Redirect To Page 11 (the same page)". I only created one region, one item and one button. That branching was automatically created.
Below was the output when I turned on the debug mode.

Apex using result_cache has an invalid status for wwv_flow_language query
In the v_$result_cache_objects view of SYS I noticed that Apex is using the result_cache feature of 11g.
Some of the Apex queries will have the status 'PUBLISHED', but others have the status 'INVALID'
Why does the "SELECT /*+ result_cache */ NLS_LANGUAGE, NLS_TERRITORY, NLS_SORT, NLS_WINDOWS_CHARSET FROM WWV_FLOW_LANGUAGES WHERE LANG_ID_UPPE..." query has a INVALID status?
It already happens when I start APEX (http://localhost:7778/pls/apex).
As I understand the result_cache method it will invalidate the cache after an update is done on the depending table.
Does it make sense that those Apex queries has a result_cache hint when it will be invalidated soon after?Hi,
just had a look at our own development box and for me this query doesn't show the status INVALID. It would also not make a lot of sense because this table is only populated during installation.
When you shutdown your database and start it up again and then access APEX with http://localhost:7778/pls/apex to see the query in invalid status?

Patrick

Oracle Universal Installer Language
Well, the situation is rather simple... or not.
I have several systems which have the OS installed in a language I don't understand. When I try to run the OUI I get it in that language and even though I've performed a few dozen installations and could probably do it in my sleep by now, I do need to make sure I'm not installing the wrong thing.
It's even more complicated when it's an eastern language (japanese).
In unix systems I basically solve this with and environment variable (NLS_LANG, NLS_LANGUAGE, NLS_TERRITORY for those of you who wonder) but I have found no similar solution for windows systems.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very muchThank you very much, I cannot believe i missed that (I actually thought oraparams.ini would hold a possible solution, I just didn't see that particular variable... ¬¬)
Again,
Thank you very much. -

Thanks a lot!to work in French languageWhat did you mean by "work in french" ?
Is this the output like below :
SQL> select * from toto;
select * from toto
ERREUR à la ligne 1 :
ORA-00942: Table ou vue inexistante
SQL> What is your OS ?
For Windows, run regedit, go to \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOME0 (or you HOME)
Then edit NLS_LANG parameter, and type :
FRENCH_FRANCE.xxxx
For Unix, more simple :
export NLS_LANG=FRENCH_FRANCE.xxxx
Just replace xxxx by your character set.

Case Sensitivity Issue with Latin Characters
Hi,
The Latin Character that i am talking abt is "i",
I am trying to provide in my application the support for Azeri-Latin(Turkish family) Characters,
That is the display and the orientation of characters is perfectly fine throughout the flow of application.
But now there is a problem when selecting a data from DB using like constraint in where clause... The issue has been elaborated below...
From the set of characters there are two character in which i am facing Case Sensitivity issue...
They are as,
i ---> the capital of same is ---> İ
ı ---> the capital of same is ---> I
now in english character mapping,
for i ---> the capital is ---> I
So, this is creating an issue...
Now the test i have done is as follows,
I created a table as,
Create Table CS
CS1 VARCHAR2(20)
Following is the data that is inserted in the table,
Insert into CS values('İ');
Insert into CS values('i');
Insert into CS values('I');
Insert into CS values('ı');
now i am running the following query,
Select * from CS where lower(CS1) like lower('%&a%');
for characters "i","İ","I" it returns 3 rows, that are,
i
İ
I
and for character ı it only returns,
ı
ideally for characters "i" & "İ" should be mapped with each other and "ı" & "I" should be mapped with each other respectively.
But that is not the case.
I am using Oracle 10g
my NLS_database_parameters are as follows,
PARAMETER VALUE
NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA

and at client i m using,

any help on this issue will be appreciated,
Thanks & Regards,
PratikI'm not fully understand your question but I guess you may need to set up NLS_LANGUAGE, NLS_TERRITORY db parameters and client NLS_LANG.
eg client NLS_LANG=TURKISH_AZERBAIJAN.AL32UTF8 and db parameters NLS_LANGUAGE=TURKISH, NLS_TERRITORY=AZERBAIJAN

Hi,
I am getting a little desperate here. I have a Solaris 7 box here and want
to have a database
that supports the following features:
*) Support of european special characters (Umlaute, ...)
*) Correct sort order of those characters
I can type Umlaute successfully in the Solaris environment, so vd| work
fine. So then I created
an instance and this is what I get when I type 'select * from
nls_database_parameters':
SQL> select * from nls_database_parameters;
PARAMETER VALUE
NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA
NLS_CURRENCY $
NLS_ISO_CURRENCY AMERICA
NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS .,
NLS_CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P9
NLS_CALENDAR GREGORIAN
NLS_DATE_FORMAT DD-MON-RR
NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_SORT BINARY
NLS_TIME_FORMAT HH.MI.SSXFF AM
PARAMETER VALUE
NLS_TIMESTAMP_FORMAT DD-MON-RR HH.MI.SSXFF AM
NLS_TIME_TZ_FORMAT HH.MI.SSXFF AM TZH:TZM
NLS_TIMESTAMP_TZ_FORMAT DD-MON-RR HH.MI.SSXFF AM TZH:TZM
NLS_DUAL_CURRENCY $
NLS_COMP BINARY
NLS_NCHAR_CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P9
NLS_RDBMS_VERSION 8.1.7.0.0
18 rows selected.
So the character set of the database is WE8ISO8859P9. Now I would assume
that the database can store Umlaute and all those funny characters. Now then
I connect with SQL plus and view the session parameters:

I set the NLS_LANGUAGE,NLS_TERRITORY and NLS_SORT in the init.ora file. But
look what happens:
SQL> insert into NLS values('vvdd||');
1 row created.
SQL> select * from NLS;
TEXT
Vster
Dther
Dther
vd|
vd|
vvdd| |
6 rows selected.
The characters are not saved correctly. The same happens if I connect with a
remote
client and save Umlaute. I really don't understand what I am doing wrong
here, neither
do I understand why it does not work, I have absolutely no clue. I read the
whole NLS
chapters and I must be too stupid to understand.
I have to admit that I am quite new to both Solaris and Oracle, but I do get
the basics
I believe, but this cracks me up.
What do I have to do to support Umlaute and correct sorting?
I remember having a database with the USASCII7 character set and this one
works fine with
Umlaute, but why???? The ASCII7 charset doesn't even know Umlaute! Also the
sorting does
not work well, despite someone else's help just recently.
I would appreciate everybody's helps and hints and tips that could help me
solve this
tedious problem.
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Ingmar.
nullHi Sven and Ingmar,
I will try to kill 2 birds with one stone here. First of all you should check the definition of your current database character set and make sure that it can support all the characters that you need to store in your database.
Please check out
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/iso.asp
WE8ISO8859P9 is for Turkish and WE8ISO8859P1 is for western European (without Euro support).
Next you need to set your client NLS_LANG character set (eg. for your SQL*Plus seesion), so that Oracle can convert your client operating system characters correctly into your database character set. The NLS_LANG character set also determines how SQL*Plus interpret/display your characters upon retrieval from the db.
In both of your cases , I believed that the client NLS_LANG setting was not defined , hence this was defaulting to AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII. This is telling SQL*PLUS that the your client operating system can handle ASCII data only , hence all the accented characters are converted to ASCII during insertion into the database. Likewise upon data retrieval.
If you are running SQL*PLUS client on English Windows then you NLS_LANG character set should be WE8MSWIN1252 and for Turkish Windows it should set to TR8MSWIN1254 .
If the client character set and the database character set are the same , Oracle does not perform any data conversion, that's why if you use a US7ASCII database and set you NLS_LANG character set to US7ASCII .then you can insert all the accented Latin characters , Japanese , Chinese etc. This configuration is not supported, and it can cause many issues.
For more information on character set configuration and possible problems.

But when i select from database it seems like this.

And i update this row from Linux side and select from client

AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P9

AMERICAN_AMERICA.TR8PC857 (Best result but still lots of problem)
AMERICAN_AMERICA.TR8MSWIN1254
ThanksHi,
sorry missed that picture. What I now think is that you missing the possibility to display turkish characters on Linux. Is there a Turkish pack to install for Linux "(I'm no a Linux expert). Or are you using a lettertype which cannot display Turkish letters?

Ftping the PG.xml to mds folder will not help the page to goto MDS directory
You have to import the file using xmlimporter
I understand you have done the import, but it is not success.
Could you please post what is the script you used to import the PG.xml
and once you run what was the output you have got.
May be you can refer the URL for the scripts

Changing database character set
Can anyone help with the way to change the database character set.
I am runn into problem while exporting with error message exp-00091
ThanksYou don't need to change the database character set. You have only to set the correct character set at
OS level before doing the export. Execute the following at Sql prompt as DBA :
SQL> select * from v$nls_parameters
2* where parameter in ('NLS_LANGUAGE', 'NLS_TERRITORY', 'NLS_CHARACTERSET')
SQL> /
PARAMETER VALUE
NLS_LANGUAGE AMERICAN
NLS_TERRITORY AMERICA
NLS_CHARACTERSET WE8ISO8859P15
SQL>then at OS prompt :
$ export NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P15
$ exp ..............
Of course you have to use your values.
