Is Oracle slow???

Hi,
I am in a typical situation...as an oracle dba I need to explain the the difference between Oracle and SQL Server to management..
Oracle:
My question is we have one Oracle 10g 10.2.0.1 instance running on HP-UX 11.21 itanium server...
I have written RMAN online Backup to take backup with compression...thati is the script that what i am using..Daily night there is no load, at that time backup is occuring...
crosscheck backup;
backup as compressed backupset database;
sql 'alter system switch logfile';
backup as compressed backupset archivelog all;
backup as compressed backupset current controlfile;

The above backup took 1 hour 20 mins to complete. After moving the above backupsets to TEST Machine.... It took 2 hours 30 Mins to clone entire database....
So finaly...
For taking Backup = 1 hour 20 Mins
For Cloning = 2 Hour 30 Mins
We have important 2 tablespaces for java based application....
DATA_TBS used size = 3.5 GB
INDEX_TBS used size = 4 GB
In Oracle..For Cloning..I move all RMAN backupsets to TEST Machine and clone using
run
restore database;
revover database;
alter database open resetlogs;

This is regarding SQL Server 2005 on windows 2003 Machine with same type of hardware and memory and processor speed with same type of hard disks.
Here same Java Application database ( Same tables ) which is on SQL Server....
For taking Backup = 10 Mins
For Restore backup to other machine = 20 Mins
Here for Backup...right click on database and take backup..for restore also..right click and restore...everything is GUI....

If it is slow...why cant we migrate our databases to SQL Server like that they are asking....
Friends...what I can say...as normal Oracle DBAs does...same thing I am doing regading RMAN Backup and Restore...
But for taking Backup and Clone in Oracle it is taking much time compared to SQL Server
what might bethe reasons?????

Keep in mind that...
In both machines where we are clong..both are with same hardware and same memory and same processors and same hard disk speed...but why Oracle is slow for backup and cloning...how can i explain these things to management??????please sched some light on this.......

So what we have here is
- one server, 50 percent of RAM grabbed by SGA.
This is the typical symptom of resolving performance problems by throwing memory at the problem. Actually this can have a negative impact on performance.
- All data files and logfiles on one disk. One shouldn't do that, as it creates an I/O bottleneck. Must I assume the disk is RAID-5 too?
- Default backup strategy (rman copy) not being followed
- Default backup being use: so unlimited backup set size, unlimited backup piece size. This will result in RMAN opening as much datafiles as possible, and reading them all at once, simultaneosly, consequently creating an I/O bottleneck
- Where is the backup going to? To the Flash Recovery Area? On that same disk?
To $ORACLE_HOME/dbs? On that same disk?
Then we have the usual stupidity of management comparing apples and pears.
Oracle and Sqlserver are completely different products!
You have an untuned RMAN backup, and probably you are flooding that single disk with I/O requests, and the only thing managers do, knowing nothing about databases. knowing nothing about Oracle, is take their watches, and say 'Hey, it is slower, how come?'
Your question is like a bad Homer Simpson movie. I can even hear Homer uttering this last question!
Didn't they allow untrained staff to set up a suboptimal configuration?
And now untrained staff should explain?
First thing you need to do is to make you sure you stop flooding the disk with IO requests. You need to use filesperset settings, maxpiecesize settings etc.

    - legandary security vulnerabilities
    - memory leaks you could drive a truck through
    - Patching weekly

    Comparing Windows 2000, released in March 2000, with Red Hat 7.2 which was released in ... sorry, forgot the date, but I put in a couple servers running that release of Linux into service in 2001. I was kind of hoping that you would have an article which pits Windows 3.1 against the original Linux release. :-)
    You might be happy to know that things have changed significantly since Windows 3.1, and also significantly since Windows 2000. There were many improvements in Windows 2003 over Windows 2000 (I happened to read a couple large books on the subject of Windows 2003 Server a couple years ago).     Regarding blue screen of death, those are rather rare with versions of Windows since the release of Windows 2000. The last blue screen that I saw on a server happened when an ECC memory module started experiencing multiple hardware bit errors which could not be corrected by the ECC memory logic. The server hardware forced the blue screen to prevent data corruption. The previous blue screen? A Windows NT 4.0 Server (circa 1996) when a new RAID controller was added to the server.
    Regarding legandary security vulnerabilities, well I don't think that it quite qualifies as legendary. However, given the wide usage of Windows (particularly by people just starting to learn to use computers), there will very definitely be more security issues to contend with - Windows often offers a larger attack surface than other operating systems. Yes, there have been many security problems over the years.
    Regarding memory leaks you could drive a truck through, I have to say that in a server environment I have not experienced that problem. On a desktop environment, I would say that it is typically the fault of poorly written applications which cause the memory leaks. Windows will often clean up after the poorly written applications when they are closed.
    Regarding patching weekly, yes there are typically frequent security and bug fixes released for the Windows platform, but I suggest that if someone is patching weekly on a server, there is probably a larger problem to be addressed.
    Regarding the world's most incompetant tech support, I am not sure that I follow your logic:

  • Oracle: slow performance with SELECT using ojdbc14 and connection pooling

    Hello,
    i'm working hard the last days to solve a performance problem with our customer using a oracle 10g database. For testing I used our oracle 9.2.0.1.0 database which shows the same symptoms. All doing solved nothing: the performance while using this oracle is much slower than other databases. This result I cannot trust and so I need some advice. What is missing to improve the performance on the java side?
    The webapplication I use runs fast on MySQL 4.x and SQLServer 2000, but on the above mentioned Oracle it was always 4 times slower. The webapplication uses a lot of simple SELECT-Statements without complicated joins and so on (because it should run on many different databases). Doing some days of creating tests within this webapplication, I was not able to find any entrance point for a change. All databases server I'm using, having only the default configurations after a common installation.
    To reduce the complexity I wrote a simple java application with connection pooling using only the latest libraries from apache-commons(dbcp, pool), and the latest ojdbc14 for oracle 9.2.
    First the results than the code: MySQL needed less than 1000 millisecond, SQLServer around 1000 milliseconds and Oracle over 2000 milliseconds. I stopped pooling and the results are for Oracle even worse: over 18000 milliseconds (mysql:2500, sqlserver:4100).
    I changed the classes for Oracle and used the class oracle.jdbc.pool.OracleConnectionCacheImpl from the ojdbc14-library. No difference (around 100 milliseconds more or less).
    The only Select-Statement works on this table, which has one index on HICTGID.
    It contains 259 entrances.:

    A few comments.
    There is of course another difference between your test cases then just the database. There is also the driver. And I suspect that in at least the case with the jtds driver it is helping you along where you are doing something silly and the Oracle driver is not.
    Before I explain the next part I would say the speed differences between MS-SQL and MySQL look about right I think you are aiming here for MS-SQL level performance not MySQL. (For a bunch of reasons MySQL is inherently faster but there are MANY drawbacks as well which have been well discussed on previous threads)
    Here is where I believe your problem lies

    1) Why are you preparing the statement INSIDE the loop. Let us for a moment say that the loop will spin 100 times. That means that you are preparing the same statement 100 times. This is bad. It is also very relevant because for example the Jtds driver is going to be caching the prepared statements you make so that actually while you try and prepare it 100 times it only actually does it once... but in Oracle I don't know what it is doing for sure but if it is preparing on each pass well than that bit of it is going take 100 times longer then it should.
    2) You are opening and closing the connection on each pass through the loop... also a terrible idea. You need to fix this first so that you can repeatedly use the same prepared statement.
    3) Why are you looping in the first place? More on this later.
    4) Where do you close the PreparedStatement? It doesn't look like you do.
    Okay so for starters your loop should look a lot more like this...

    I think the code above (and you can put your debug stuff back if you want) which uses ONE connection and ONE prepared Statement will improve your performance dramatically.
    The other question though I would as is why in the hell you are doing 100 or whatever number of queries anyway. This can be done all in ONE query which again will improve performance.

    If any body hit the same issue as the following case ?
    We have a job in SQL2008 Insert data to Oracle 11g using OLEDB Linked Server.
    Previously in 9.2.0.8 & 11.2.0.1 version , the insert speed is very fast .
    But after we upgrade oracle to 11.2.0.2 , the insert speed drop down a lot , maybe 1min to 10min .....
    Could any body give any idea ?

    Oracle 10g XE migrate from 32bit to 64bit becomes slower
    Currently we have a database using Oracle 10g XE R2
    (Oracle Database 10g Express Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0)
    on a linux 32bit server.
    And recently we did migrate it to another 64bit linux server.
    But found after migration is it running slower at 64bit server (~ 25% slower)
    1. We would wonder any tuning is required on 64bit server?
    Besides, as I know Oracle XE only using single core CPU for processing.
    On 32bit linux the CPU is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E31235 @ 3.20GHz
    On 64bit linux the CPU is Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2470 v2 @ 2.40GHz
    2. Would the CPU clock speed on a single core also made the 64bit Oracle slower?

    32 or 64 bit normally won't cause much performance difference as long as you can't use > 4GB RAM
    Please note that XE can use only 1 core and 1GB memory.
    According to benchmarks, Single Thread Rating of the 2 CPU really differ by around 25%. Quite consistent with your observation.
    Of course, IO (i.e., disk) speed is also an important factor.

  • Slow Performance When Application is Slow

    We have an application that unfortunately appears to eat up system free memory over time. When the load increase and memory decrease we also see that all queries against Oracle slow down dramatically doing a lot of physical reads. (Oracle runs on a separate server from the application.) When we restart the application memory is freed up on the application server and Oracle queries run very fast. However, over time they both slow down again. Again, we only restart the application not Oracle.
    Does anybody have any idea why a slow application would result in slow query times? We measured the slowness and it is indeed all in the query execution. Any help would be appreciated.

    when you execute it from toad, do you get all the rows back, or just a screen full and call it quits? if you don't actually page through all the rows, then they aren't really returned, and oracle wouldn't need to do as many reads.

    you can also check v$sql to find out if both toad and your application are really using the same sql. perhaps there's an "alter session set current_schema" going on somewhere that is changing things (granted, it's probably not that, but my point is that it could be something).

    maybe toad and the application have different optimizer modes (all_rows vs first_rows) which result in a different plan, and therefore different amounts of physical read.

    you can try these scripts from my blog to check "What is actually running right now?". Start with the CURRENT_SQL script to get the address and child number of the running sql. even if two connections run the exact same sql statement, there could be differences (mentioned above) which would result in different children.

    I'm new to the Windows environment for running Oracle and I'm having some performance issues with a report that I'm reviewing....
    I found that one of the tables being utilized by this report has 100,000,000 rows in it....When I run a SELECT COUNT(*) FROM T_FIELD, it takes 75 seconds to return the result....
    Although this seems like a lot of data to simply count and return shouldn't take that long....In my experience on Unix environments, a similar request would take 3 - 4 seconds....
    Is there a way to tell, if this is a performance issue with the box, Oracle configuration, or just not enough stuff in the box to properly power our Oracle environment with sufficient speed....
    I've set up STATSPACK and run while executing this COUNT......And compared the report against the idle database.....But I'm not sure what it's telling me....
    Here are some specifics about my environment.....
    Server: Windows Server 2003 - Service Pack 1
    Processor - Xeon 3.4 GHz(1)
    Memory - 3.5 Gig
    Disk - C:\ 67.8 Gig
    D:\ Raid 5 - 838 Gig
    Oracle 9.2.0.8.0 Enterprise Edition
    SGA Environment
    Shared Pool - 152 MB
    Buffer Cache - 256 MB
    Lagre Pool - 104 MB
    Java Pool - 80 MB
    SGA Max Size - 617.071 MB
    Any help in determining why this COUNT function takes so long would be greatly appreciated....

    Yeah.. no matter how much I like Linux and dislike Windows as an Oracle platform, that statement has no relevance at all. Linux/Unix does not mean 'Oracle fast' and Windoes does not mean 'Oracle slow'. Implying it does is a gross misunderstanding of o/s and Oracle architectures.
    One SELECT COUNT can be very different from another. On the very same instance on the very same platform. And now you want to compare the "average" SELECT COUNT performance on Linux/Unix with that on Windows? There is nothing logical or sensible about attempting such a comparison - never mind the fact that there is no such thing as an "average" SELECT COUNT performance.
    The very first thing to establish is HOW that SELECT COUNT is executed. Does it perform a full table scan? Does it perform an fast full index scan? Does it scan a bitmap index? Etc.
    Post the execution plan.
    And yes - one look at this level of detail long before popping the hood on Oracle configuration settings and trying "silver bullets" to slay the performance monster.

  • Computer takes 15 min to boot up

    Hello,
    I just installed Oracle 10g on my computer here at home and now my computer takes almost 15 min. to boot up. There was also a power outage here in town at the same time so I'm not sure if it has to do with the Oracle installation or the power outage. However, does anyone know if Oracle makes Windows start some sort of Oracle service at start up, which would cause the computer to launch the service when it boots up? If so, how can I disable it? I checked my Windows startup folder but there are no Oracle icons there.

    Peter,
    Oracle services start on windows startup as a background services that's why you won't see anything in the windows startup.
    And the only time Oracle slows down a startup is when you don't have sufficient memory or a slow processor.
    You can do waht was suggested in the previous post, and more you can create a batch file (*.bat) do start and stop Oracle just by double clicks.

  • Long running time at system copy

    Hi All,
    I met a problem while performing system copy.   system environment is: win server 2003 Oracle 10g
    the export process runs smoothly until the 19th package be exported.
    18 out of 19 package have been exported successfully.
    The last package is SAPSSEXEC.XXX, I checked the log file and found it runs for long time on table IGORA, PERMISSION, REPOSRC. IGORA took 2 hours more, PERMISSION took 4 hours, and REPOSRC still havn't been completed due to it contains 20 million records, but strange is that IGORA only contains 15 entries, why it took so long? and as checked in SE11, this table doesn't contain any LONG type field.
    before system export, I already updated oracle statistics.
    I have read through sap note:
    Note 1046103 - ORACLE DIRECT PATH LOAD SUPPORT IN R3LOAD 7.00 AND LATER
    Note 936441 - Oracle settings for R3load based system copy
    Note 1045847 - ORACLE DIRECT PATH LOAD SUPPORT IN R3LOAD7
    But seems not helpful.

    You can compare REPOSRC.log and REPOSRC.log.bck file it's copying or not.
    Check the SIZE of the tables.
    The Below points will use to increse the system performance while exporting.
    1.  Using of RowID splitting for large transparent tables (PL/SQL Script) (Table spliiting)
    3.  Increasing CPU/RAM in the Source hardware.
    4.  Editing DDLORA.TPL file for reducing index creation of import, copy parameter from DDLORA_LRG.TPL file
    5.  delete data from batch logs table (APQD, EDI40, TST03....)
    6.   Update Full statistics before export using the below br command
         Brcoonect -c -u / -f stats -t all -f collect -p <number of CPU>
    7. Disable archiving in database
    (alter database noarchivelog)
    8. PSAPTEMP adjustments , DB parameters as per the note 936441
    9. for oracle slow I /O performance check the note 834343, 793113

  • Slow running query after upgrading to Oracle 10.2.0.4

    I had posted a query in Database Upgrade section , but all in vian as i have had no replies . So i am posing this in general section as i can now confirm with the exact query issue .
    1. I upgraded my oracle instance windows 64 bit from 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.4
    2. All is good except when i use SUM or MAX in queries i get a very slow performance below is the complete example

  • Oracle 10G slow Performance on Windows 2003 Server

    Hi there,
    Looking for a little assistance in locating a bottleneck that's started to hit our system this week. It's really odd because it's been starting around 10am every morning this week.
    today is the worst that I've seen it because it's almost brought the system to a halt.....
    We're running Oracle 10.2.0.1 64b on Windows 2003 Server 64
    The server has 16 processors and 64GB of RAM currently the CPU is sitting at 5% and the RAM usage is at 16.4GB
    It's a blade server with a SAN backend and I'm assuming the latency is coming from the disk but I need to determine this for a fact.
    I've only been a DBA for about a year and I'm stilling learing how to locate and identify issues. According to OEM I'm seeing
    a ton of I/O from the users. So anyways, any help or insight would be much appreciated and a learning experience for me.

    We've had finding one FOREVER, I can't resolve it and I've read somewhere to ignore because OEM is false reporting. I'm adjusting DB_Cache now...
    Isn't possible that too much cache could be bad for the system and cause slow downs?

          ACTION: Host operating system was experiencing significant paging but no
             particular root cause could be detected. Investigate processes that
             do not belong to this instance running on the host that are consuming
             significant amount of virtual memory. Also consider adding more
             physical memory to the host.
       RECOMMENDATION 2: DB Configuration, 100% benefit (29725 seconds)
          ACTION: Consider enabling Automatic Shared Memory Management by setting
             the parameter "sga_target" to control the amount of SGA consumed by
             this instance.
    FINDING 2: 51% impact (15210 seconds)
    The buffer cache was undersized causing significant additional read I/O.
       RECOMMENDATION 1: DB Configuration, 9% benefit (2685 seconds)
          ACTION: Increase the buffer cache size by setting the value of parameter
             "db_cache_size" to 7568 M.
       ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
          The value of parameter "db_cache_size" was "6912 M" during the analysis
          period.
       SYMPTOMS THAT LED TO THE FINDING:
          SYMPTOM: Wait class "User I/O" was consuming significant database time.

  • CR XI & XI R2 - PutLocation() Extremely Slow on Oracle Database

    I have an issue very similar to others posted in this forum, but was asked to start a new thread.
    I'm using Crystal XI and XI R2,updated with SP6.
    I develop using C++ on VS2008 using the crystal COM object.
    I have common database tables, in which I have views on these tables. The views depict a collection, and when the report is to run on a different collection I need to change the views on all of the tables (including those in subreports), as well as provide the credentials for connection.
    I'm using Oracle 10g, and changing a couple of properties using the following sequence for each table to change the login information and the table's current view (each view is a portion of the overall table):

    Stepping through in my debugger, the SetLogOnInfo seems very quick, it's the PutLocation( ) that seems to be taking alot of time, several seconds per call, whereas the other calls are as quick as I can step through my code.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    This is extremely fast on SQL Server, only noticeably slow on Oracle.
    My database connections for the report utilize ODBC (The ORACLE installed driver, not the MS driver), which is how our application talks to the database, and provides a connection to crystal.
    I can have upwards of 20 tables/views in a report, and this can take 1/2 to a full minute to accomplish.
    In addition, I optionally provide a user the ability to add criteria and sorting to the report; and perform a table/column collection to show them to the user for seleciton. This same process is used on all views (including those in subreports), so proper data lists can be provided from the correct views.
    Does anyone have a solution for this?

    Ludek, thanks for the response.
    I think it might be best if I cite your response and comment on it.
    1) Only CR 10.5 and CR 2008 (12.x) are supported in .NET 2008.
    I'm using VS2008 with C, not .Net.   Everything works fine, including all of the API calls, it is only the performance of this particular call to PutLocation( ) that is slow using Crystal engine XI.
    2) You actually appear to be using the RDC (craxdrt.dll) in .NET, which is also not supported in .NET - any version of .NET. See this article for details and also see this blog.
    See #1 above, not using .NET.
    3) You are using SetLogOnInfo. This method was deprecated in version 9 of Crystal Reports and you now must use the connection properties bag. See this article for more details.
         I'm previewing the article you cited above, iew the Connection Property to see if this will work for me.
    If you somehow manage to overcome the above issues, you will have to also resolve the issue of how and which CR runtime to distribute. RDC? CR for .NET? Both?
          For distribution, I copied the 4 MSM files from the installation to my Installshield Redistributables, select all four to be included in my package, the license is the only one requiring a keycode, which I took as the product code used to do my install (as instructed by Macrovision/Business Objects support several years ago when we first upgraded to Crystal XI and I did our interface rewrite to use the COM object.

    I've Oracle 11.2.0.3 with the same problem: some query are very slow (in the Excecution plan I've found "PX COORDINATOR")
    Others installation of Oracle 11.2.0.3 haven't same problem: in the excecution plan found "DOMAIN INDEX".
    I 've solved using statement "ALTER TABLE table_name NOPARALLEL;" which disable parallel feature in the table
    Can anyone tell me if it's a good (bad) solution ? thank you

    As indicated in the original post - the following work-around might work for you for bug 9743250. What this does is essentially force the optimizer to ALWAYS use the spatial index. That is usually good - unless the query is actually more efficient not using the index, such as when it is much cheaper to just to a FTS. Anyhow this is what you can do from 11.2.0.1 to 11.2.0.3 - fixed in 11.2.0.4 and 12.1.0.1:
