Is tagging files necessary with Spotlight?

I'm an attorney, so I save a lot of case law on my computer. They are usally PDFs. I've thought about adding tags to the files so that I can search certain legal terms. However, the legal terms (the tags I would use) are all words and phrases that are used within the files. With Spotlight I can just type the word or phrase and the files using them show up in the search result without the file ever having been tagged. If all that I'm ever searching are these words or phrases that are already used within the file, would there be any benefit to tagging these files with the words or phrases?

On the subject of spotlight tags
(1) Let's get one thing straight. (I thought I had done that when I wrote "edit a PDF in Acrobat".) We're not talking Spotlight tags (even if they exist). We're talking PDF tags. These are read and understood by any app which understands the PDF document information dictionary (see PDF Reference, 6th edition, §10.2.1), which is the most basic level (we'll ignore metadata streams). These stay with the document, and get carried over with the document; which means not only that they'll be understood by any properly designed PDF manager, but that they will be used also on Windows, Linux, and so on. IOW, the investment of work on tagging these files is not only not tied to Spotlight, it is not even tied to Mac OS X. Hence, definitely worth doing, AFAIC.
Personally I don't waste my time remembering various properties spotlight can use
(2) À chacun son goût, maître. (I find that it's not remembering that takes time -- faster hard drive, maybe?) The point of the little trick was answering the OP's question, ie, using Spotlight to search for PDF tags only. As to remembering, well, there are such things as saved searches and 'smart folders'. Moreover, anyone who can handle the spelling and pronunciation of sundry Anglo-Norman juicy bits like "avowtry", "postremogeniture", "nuncupative will", or "writ of oyer & terminer" will hardly have a coughing fit over two measly kMDItem keywords, now will he?
I use spotlight for basic filename
(3) IMHO, that's exactly where SL falls very short; but, to each his own. As anyone who's read my posts knows, I can hardly be described as a fan of SL. In my case, 99% of my searches are of filenames, and, unfortunately, there's no replacement for SL that fits my needs. None of the three apps I use on a regular basis (John R Chang's Find File, Thomas Tempelmann's FindAnyFile, and Christian Grünenberg's EasyFind) are a complete replacement for the Find utility in Panther. As to my PDFs, I manage those with EndNote. I don't recommend it (it's really not a PDF manager at all), but I have a lot of data in it and haven't found yet something worth converting to. But I'm not a lawyer; if I were, I'd certainly take a very close look at DevonThink.
On the subject of spotlight tags, although I never use them, there's even a utility for them as well.  It's called TagIt.
(4) I would urge some degree of caution when considering TagIt. It's not a "spotlight tags" utility (in fact, are there any "spotlight tags", other than comments?); it's really part of OpenMeta; the developer, Ironic Software, lately seems missing in action, and Yep, their foremost product, hasn't been updated in quite some time. Unlike PDF metadata, OpenMeta is not cross-platform and it is not transferable.

  • Vim "No tags file" error with python

    I'm trying to get vim set up for python IDE stuff, but when I ctrl+] on a method or anything else, I get a "No tags file" error. I have the TagList plugin installed. Is there anything else I need to do to set this up?

    You need the "tag file" before you to use "ctrl +]".
    To get the tag file run this command "ctags -R *"  in your source files' directory.

  • Can't find files either with Spotlight or Finder

    So (for example) I just created a file (with Photoshop) called "duellingremotes.jpg" and it's in a folder in another folder on the Desktop. Nothing comes up when I search for "remote" either in Spotlight or by going Command-F. Is this not one of the basic abilities that I should have? What am I doing wrong?

    To add to Daniel's response,
    When you search for a term in Spotlight, it assumes that the term you are searching for represents a word or the beginning of a word. That said, it will find the word within the file name as long as it is delineated in the filename either with-punctuation, ChangeOfCase, or spac ing.
    So, if you named the file DuellingRemotes.jpg, it would find it if you searched for "remote." But it would not find it on searching for "mote"
    If you want to search for something that is an embedded string in a file name, use the Name Contains option in Cmd-F.
    With that, you could search for "ingrem", "otes" or any other part of the file name.

  • WLS 9.2.2: JSP recompile for every page load with JAR'ed tag files

    I have a small custom tag library of three tag files. With the server running in development mode and the tag files in a JAR (included in WEB-INF/lib), the server appears to be doing a JSP recompile on every page load. However, it only compiles on the first page load if the tag files are included in WEB-INF/tags (no JAR). Also, running the server in production mode with the JAR'ed tag files avoids the recompile for every page load.
              Is that how the server should behave?
              For whatever it's worth, I'm also using Eclipse 3.3.2 with WTP and WebLogic Server Tools 1.1.2. The server is running the Sun JVM (1.5_10).

  • Simple Tag Files

    I've tried the example shown in this week's article on java.sun.com about simple tag files.
    With Tomcat running under java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 I get the error manditory uri missing in the jsp.
    Is there something I'm missing?
    Code Sample 9: greetings.tag
    Hello there. How are you doing?
    Once a tag file has been defined, you can write a JSP page that uses this custom action. As an example, consider the JSP page in Code Sample 10.
    Code Sample 10: chat.jsp
    <%@ taglib prefix="tags" tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags" %>
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>JSP 2.0 Examples - Hello World Using a Tag File</title>
    </head>
    <BODY>
    <H2>Tag File Example</h2>
    <P>
    <B>The output of my first tag file is</b>: <tags:greetings/>
    </body>
    </html>

    I get the error manditory uri missing in the jsp.
    Is there something I'm missing?Yes, a mandatory uri ;)
    <%@ taglib prefix="tags" tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags" %><%@ taglib prefix="tags" uri="/WEB-INF/tags" %>
    Make sure that you define the uri so that it points to the actual tld file in your web.xml.

  • Issue with project having Tag File containing definition of other Tag File

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a small problem which you experts are able to help with.
    As the subject of this Post has suggested, I have a project which was originally built in NetBean 6.0 and I'm trying to migrate it across to JDeveloper 10.1.3. So far, I've managed to compiled all jsps and java source files successfully but I'm now stuck with the following error messages during building of the project in JDeveloper:
    --- START OF ERROR ---
    Error(6): Unable to instantiate tag: menu:tab (class: oracle.jsp._tag._tabmenu._tab_tag) Make sure that the tag class is available and that the tag library containing the class is not excluded from this application.
    Error(6): Unable to find class for bean: null defined by tag with class: oracle.jsp._tag._tabmenu._tab_tag
    --- END OF ERROR ---
    I believe the reason was that I have this Tag file (menu.tag) that contains definitions and references to another Tag file and here is its content:
    --- START OF TAG FILE ---
    <%@ taglib prefix="menu" tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags/tabmenu" %>
    <%@ attribute name="tab" required="true" type="java.lang.String" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="login" class="au.wa.apa.webbeans.WrsLogin" scope="session" />
    <div id="menu">

    <% } else { %>
    <menu:tab tab="TEMP" currentTab="<%=tab%>" label="Templates" tooltip="Template Management" url="aq/adv_query_template_list.wrs"/>
    <% } %>
    </ul>
    <div class="clear"></div>
    </div>
    --- END OF TAG FILE ---
    I've this problem for several days now and have not been able to solve it and I hope you are able to help me with this problem. Thank you for time and assistance and have a nice day.
    Kind Regards,
    John

    Hi Guys,
    Do we have any workaround to this problem? Any feedback will be welcomed.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • WLS does not handle reusable jar with tag-files?

    I want to encapsulate some tag-files in a re-usable jar that can be included in multiple applications. According to all the documentation that I've found what I need to do is create a jar file containing:

    <name>someName</name>
    <path>META-INF/tags/myTag.tag</path>
    </tag-file>
    Then I am supposed to take that jar file and put it in my web application under WEB-INF/lib,
    and in my index.jsp I can refer to <%@taglib prefix="myt" uri="myTag">
    However when I do this (on wls 12c) the application seems to deploy ok but when I try to access index.jsp I get:
    weblogic.servlet.jsp.CompilationException: Failed to compile JSP /index.jsp
    index.jsp:14:4: No tag library could be found with this URI. Possible causes could be that the URI is incorrect, or that there were errors during parsing of the .tld file.
    <%@taglib prefix="tags" uri="myt" %>
    Related facts:
    1. When I deploy these projects in Glassfish it works . as I expected based on the documentation with no errors.
    2. If I copy the tag files and tld with no modification directly into the web application as:
    <my web app>/WEB-INF/taglib.tld
    and <my web app>/META-INF/tags/myTag.tag
    then it does work. However, that prevents me from packaging the tag-files as a re-usable jar.
    (Facts 1 & 2 seem to imply that the files are correct and that WebLogic is not handling the jar correctly?)
    3. I've seen suggestions that there needs to be a <taglib> entry in web.xml. I have tried this and...
    - the text I've seen on the web generates an error. It seems to need to be within a <jsp-config> entry in web.xml.
    - even with this I still get the same error.
    Does anyone have a suggestion for how to get Weblogic to handle tag-files inside a re-usable jar?
    Do you have an example jar you can point me to just to see that it works on my system?
    Is there some special configuration needed by Weblogic to tell it to handle this construct?
    And finally, the error message is saying that one of two things is wrong:
    Either:
    A) it cannot find the referenced taglib file, or
    B) the tld file failed to compile.
    Is there any way for me to find out which of these is happening? The error messages in WLS do not seem to give any more info, so I cannot easily distinguish between these possibilities.
    Thanks for your assistance.

    After 3 days of seeing this error, immediately after posting this request the problem disappeared. Sigh.
    So for now this problem is closed. If it comes back I'll re-post.

  • Prob in  working with jsp 2.0 tags fil

    hi all
    i am facing a prob working with jsp 2.0 tags files and hope to receive a possitive responce from your good self:-
    <p>
    how could i create a instance of a user defined class in a tags files .
    <p>eg.
    <tb:firsttag tableName="customer" className="createtable" packagename="package1">
    <BR>
    </tb:firsttag>
    what code i have to write in tag file to create a object of class createtable </br>
    thanks in advance, waiting for ur cooperation

    I'm not sure I understand your question, but...
    If you want to create a custom tag that will contain a body (data between the start and end tags) you will extend BodyTagSupport.
    HTH.

  • Ojspc (with JDeveloper 10.1.3.2.0) keeps recompiling .tag files.

    I find it takes an extremely long time to compile my web application with 75 .jsp files (14188 non-blank lines) and 24 .tag files (438 non-blank lines). About 24 minutes, in fact. I attribute this to the utility insisting on recompiling each and every .tag file for every .jsp that uses them.
    During translation, I see the javac process start up several times, and I inspected the javacXXX temporary file that gets created (it stores the VM arguments for each compilation) whenever Oracle needs to compile a page. Now compilation is supposed to happen after translation, but it still happens repeatedly for the same .tag file. If the .tag file is used in each of the 75 .jsp files, then it gets compiled 75 times! I even tried adding the temporary directory where Oracle outputs its .class files for these .tag files to the compilation classpath, and it didn't have any effect.
    I also can't precompile the .tag files in an attempt to force it to use already compiled .tag files, as ojspc doesn't seem to want to translate/compile them on its own (but only as a result of a .jsp that needs them).
    Here are the options in my build.xml:
      <target name="ojspc">
        <path id="ojspc.classpath">
          <fileset dir="${source.web.path}/WEB-INF/lib">
            <include name="*.jar" />
          </fileset>
          <!-- The following is where the .tag files end up after being automatically translated,
               then compiled (even though the compiled versions are .class files and should go in
               oracle/generatedClass, below) -->
          <pathelement path="${build.root}/oracle/generatedJava" />
        </path>
        <property name="ojspc.classpath" refid="ojspc.classpath" />
        <mkdir dir="${build.root}/oracle" />
        <mkdir dir="${build.root}/oracle/generatedClass" />
        <mkdir dir="${build.root}/oracle/generatedJava" />
        <oracle:compileJsp verbose="true"
          appRoot="${build.webapp.path}"
          dir="${build.root}/oracle/generatedClass"
          srcDir="${build.root}/oracle/generatedJava"
          addClassPath="${ojspc.classpath}">
          <fileset dir="${build.webapp.path}">
            <include name="**/*.jsp" />
          </fileset>
        </oracle:compileJsp>
      </target>There's nothing particularly memorable about the ant output. Everything succeeds. But 24 minutes for 15k lines of JSP sounds pretty ridiculous... this whole endeavor was an attempt to reduce initial page hit lags after deployment, but ..... 24 minutes??? :)
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Finding file with Spotlight

    How do I find a file with Spotlight? Or, more to the point, why does Spotlight make it soooo hard to find the location of files?
    Example: I want to find file "foo.xls". I type in "foo.xls" into Spotlight and sure enough, there it is! Great! Er .. but wait. All Spotlight lets me do is OPEN the file. I don't want to do that, I just want to know where it is; what folder it is in.
    How do I do that? I can't right-click on items in the Spotlight result list (why not? isn't this what most users would do?). I can't press spacebar for quicklook. I can't seem to do ANYTHING with Spotlight EXCEPT open the file.
    I presume there is some hidden shortcut key involving some obscure combination of option+command etc etc, but how am I supposed to know that? Isn't this supposed to be easy?
    This is, to say the least, very frustrating.
    --Tim

    In 10.6 and prior, the user would need only hover over the item in Spotlight's results and a yellow flag would appear with the location. In 10.7, a new Spotlight feature emerged, the preview, so the yellow flag is gone.
    Use Finder's Spotlight instead in the upper right of the Finder window. You can always use Finder's "Show Path Bar" view, so that, after doing a Finder Spotlight search, you can single click on a file and see the path listed at the bottom of the window.

  • Tag File with dynamic name

    I need to include a page with a name I do not know in advance. I can do this with <jsp:include page="${filename}"/>.
    Can I also do it somehow using tag files?

    Atul,
    Are u using mapping program in ur interface? If yes you can go ahead with ASMA + Dynamic Configurations for renaming the file.
    Have u tried this option?
    See the below Solution
    Check the ASMA File for both sender/receiver channels.
    Write the below code UDF in mapping program
    //Get Input date. Don't pass anything to this UDF except the Date.
    //Map the output to the root node of the target.
    DynamicConfiguration conf = (DynamicConfiguration) container.getTransformationParameters().get(StreamTransformationConstants.DYNAMIC_CONFIGURATION);
    DynamicConfigurationKey key = DynamicConfigurationKey.create("http://sap.com/xi/XI/System/File","FileName");
    String fname = conf.get(key);
    String ret = fname"_"Date
    return "";

  • JSP 2.x - Tag files with body-content="JSP"

    I've been looking at the JSP 2.1 draft and see that, as with the previous JSP release, it is not allowed for tag-files to have body-content="JSP". I've tried to find a good answer for that on the web, but there's no one who can enlighten me. I've tried to tweak the source of Apache Tomcat 6.0.13 (Validator.ValidateVisitor and TagFileProcessor.TagFileDirectiveVisitor, both in org.apache.jasper.compiler) to accept body-content="JSP" in tag files - with great success. It is possible to have scriptlets within tags from tag files and it works as expected.
    My reason for wanting scriptlets in the body-content of tags from tag files is that it would encourage a more contextual, nested (and in my eyes, a more beautiful) structure of JSP-pages, as opposed to the JSTL flat structure, where f.ex. the sql:query tag does not reside within a sql:setDataSource tag, but instead refers to the datasource through an EL-variable. I suppose that it has been constructed in this way only to make it possible for programmers to include scriptlets in-between sql:query tags that use the same datasource.
    Not that it is not possible to nest tag-file tags, but I suspect that many programmers then would like to keep a flat structure so as to maintain the possibility of inserting scriptlets where needed - outside any tag which is based on a tag-file.
    So, why is it not allowed for tag-files to have body-content="JSP"?

    Thanks for the reply, evnafets.
    I'm aware that scriptet-code is generally being discouraged, although I don't understand why. I think that having a standard tag-library is a wonderful idea, but in the case of JSTL, I'm not that pleased. It relies heavily on EL, which I see as an unnecessary abstraction.
    Let me give you an example. The JSTL does database-connections and queries in this way:
    <sql:setDataSource var="datasource" url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:TEMP" driver="oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver" user="scott" password="tiger" />
    <sql:query sql="SELECT * FROM EMP" dataSource="datasource" var="resultset" />This could also be accomplished without EL in a hierarchical structure:
    <sql:dataSource url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:TEMP" driver="oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver" user="scott" password="tiger">
      <sql:query sql="SELECT * FROM EMP">
        BodyContent <% perhapsWithScriptlets; %>
      </sql:query>
    </sql:dataSource>...using TagSupport.findAncestorWithClass for the query to reference the datasource which it is enclosed in. (in Tomcat, the class would be called dataSource_tag. BTW, why is this not standardised in JSP?)
    I would then also like to be able to use scriptlet-code inside the tags as I could if the tags were written as tag-classes, extending BodyTagSupport, and being defined in a formal, cumbersome TLD file.
    Why the difference in functionality between SimpleTagSupport and BodyTagSupport - or rather; why is it then not possible to specify that a tag-file should extend BodyTagSupport rather than SimpleTagSupport?

  • Please help with tag files

    Hello,
    Is it possible to use to invoke tag files from other tag files in the project? Is it allowed by spec?
    1. Create empty project.
    2. Create tag file tagFile1.tag using wizard.
    3. Create tag file tagFile2.tag using wizard.
    4. Drag TagFile2 tag from toolbar to tagFile1.tag in editor pane.
    tagFile1.tag is:
    <%@ taglib tagdir="/WEB-INF/tags/" prefix="tags"%>
    <%@ tag pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    <tags:tagFile2/>
    tagFile2.tag is:
    <%@ tag pageEncoding="UTF-8"%>
    5. Try to rebuild the project - compilation fails
    Error(3): Unable to instantiate tag: tags:tagFile2 (class: oracle.jsp._tag._tagFile2_tag) Make sure that the tag class is available and that the tag library containing the class is not excluded from this application.
    Error(3): Unable to find class for bean: null defined by tag with class: oracle.jsp._tag._tagFile2_tag
    Is it a bug of JDeveloper or OC4J or am I duing something against the spec? Could someone please comment this behaviour.

  • What has happened with Spotlight? Can't find files anymore. Why?

    Apparently I have two iPhoto libraries. When I use Spotlight to find them, I get an iPad user guide as the first return. One library is in Pictures. If I search that Finder folder for iTunes Library, search finds nothing. If I search that folder for iPhoto it returns iPhoto Slideshows, a file that follows after the iPhoto library file. If I use Spotlight, it returns hundreds of unrelated files. Not useful.
    If I double-click the library in Pictures, I get this message in iPhoto: Do you want to switch the current iPhoto Library from “iPhoto Library” to “iPhoto Library” and relaunch iPhoto?
    I suspect if I do, I'll never find the library that is now open. How'd I get two libraries? I didn't do that.
    My main question: Why doesn't Spotlight return the location of the file I'm looking for?
    Seems to me I've been finding files very efficiently with Spotlight for years, but this new version is almost useless.

    Yes, I've done that. I just did it again in response your suggestion. Had a fusion disk problem s few days ago; had to wipe it and restore so I'm working with a  clean system.   Should have been indexed... I dropped my whole hard disk in the privacy space; nothing happened. Then I dropped iMac Home; I could see it was indexing. But nothing changed...
    Today the problem was searching for a library and I wondered if Spotlight is coded to not find such Apple created fundamentals.... But daily, no matter what I'm searching for, even if I find it, it is not as efficient as it used to be.
    Maybe I'm just a grouchy old man, but it seems to me Spotlight was better before it was improved.
