Is that a good idea to put many things in /etc/rc.local?

Hello, all:
wiki told me that I could configure many files in /etc.
However, sorry if sounds stupid, I think this is not KISS.
I have to learn many different syntax to configure my computer.
I think put things in /etc/rc.local if possible is a good idea.
For example, We could configure things in this way:
[/etc/rc.conf] DAEMONS=(crond)
[/etc/fstab]   /dev/sda3 /home ext4 rw,relatime 0 1
[/etc/modules-load.d/vb.conf] vboxdrv
For a alternate, we could edit /etc/rc.local like this:
rc.d start crond
mount /dev/sda3 /home
modprobe vboxdrv
Now we do not need to learn any new syntax, everything is BASH!

I think there SHOULD be a problem with this but... I don't see a problem with this. It works in your situation, but of course it wouldn't for everyone. For example, I assume if something on /home was needed during boot then you would need to load it earlier in /etc/fstab.
I'll probably end up doing it the first way just to be more "correct". I do already have some stuff in /etc/rc.local, such as setting up soft links to my disc drives.

Bash isn't going away any time soon. Are you suggesting that /etc/rc.local will be going away?

Need to get a mibile computer and i am considering the macbook pro 15". Is that a good idea?

The 15" is the ideal size, the 17" is a bit larger and more comfortable.
The 13" is a bit cramped, the 11" forget it.
The 11 and 13" have the poor Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics (solely) which are not good at 3D gaming/video and tend to overheat as the CPU is also doing the graphics.
The 2.0 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro has a slightly better video card that does average on most current 3D games.
The 2.2Ghz MacBook Pro (and higher) does excellently on 3D games with the powerful 1GB radeon 6750M and "future proofs" your computer investment for 3, 5, 7 years or longer.
It all depends upon your portability and use needs.
If your not a 3D gamer and can afford to replace your machine in shorter time periods and all you need is a basic laptop, then one of the smaller thinner machines will do. In fact even a Windows PC laptop can do. There really isn't any advantage of going for a Mac laptop at the lower end excpet for status symbol appeal. Your going to be paying $1500 for a laptop that a $800 PC will do just as well.
However if your needing more of a portable workhorse machine the 2.2 Ghz MacBook Pro or better is ideal, it can run jsut about all the operating systems out there well, bootcamp into Windows and everythng with it's strong hardware and decent sized screen.
Also the 15" and up have the optional ANTI-GLARE screens which is great for classes and at work where you can't control the enviroment to reduce reflections.
If your on the go a lot, you can get a iPad in addition to the 15" MacBook Pro, if you need a larger screen you can buy that and use the MBP as a desktop machine sort of.
The smaller Mac machines don't drive a larger monitor very well, really you need a dedicated graphics card.

  • I have Mac OS extended and i want Maverick, is that possible? And is that a good idea?

Not sure if I can upgrade to Mac Maverick, currently have Mac OS extended.

    Saima,
You haven't provided us any information really, what is Mac OS extended for example? If you don't know the version of OS X installed on your computer click the Apple symbol in the upper left of the display and click About this Mac and it will show the version of OS X installed. We need that at a bare minimum to give you any further information. Also in that same About this Mac window it will tell you how much RAM is installed, please let us know the amout of RAM currently installed.

  • I have a good question does how many things we have in the dock station

Slow our computer down, I used to have a pc and the more you had on your taskbar the slower the system was. Does the same thing happen with my Imac or does it not matter. If it does slow things down I would like a recomendation on how many programs I should put in the dock station without affecting my systems's performance

    Good questions!
You will only really be adding 512MB because you'll have to replace one of the 512MB's with the 1GB. If you are using that much ram for your everyday usage you should consider upgrading your ram to 2GB (2x1GB) modules. You will get a little better price on a 2GB kit, but you can upgrade 1GB now and one later if you wish.
The ScreenSaver "Options/Settings" like the Dock won't make any difference, but letting it run will.
If you go to: "Macintosh HD / Application / Utilities" you will see an App. called "Activity Monitor" open it to see all your processes. If you want you can drag a copy of the icon to your Dock same as other App's, it uses 10MB when open so quit when your not using it as well.

  • Is it Ok to put many classes in one file ?

    Hi all,
This is another beginner question. I was wondering, is it good practice to put many classes in one single file? Sometimes I notice there are many classes inside one big file and sometimes each class is in its own separate file. Is there an advantage in separating each class in each different file? For e.g. one big file, called A.java:
    class A {
        public static void main(String[] args) { }
    class B {}
    class C {}
class D {}Is it better to have class B in a B.java file, and class C in C.java, etc? In the real-world workplace, what is the usual practice?
    Thank you for your replies.
    P/S : I love Java, it's so cool. :-)

I have also seen situations, in large software systems, where a compile that fails partway through will leave the top level classes that do not match the file name unbuilt, and some compilers will then not be able to build, because they cannot map the class name to the source file.

Interesting tid bit.  I created an AAC of the original file, deleted the original MP3 from my library and also deleted the Clean matched track from the icloud.
Result is that it matched with the explicit version of Mrs. Officer this time.
What I am curious about is which songs this is happening for. I've went thru a few batched of about 500 songs at a time and redownloaded in 256k for many tracks. Sadly we don't have people to bring this to our attention and I have so much music that it's impossible to go thru every song to make sure I am getting the right version.

  • Who thought that using iframes and forcing people to scroll was a good idea?

I landed on the new Support Communities homepage and immediately noticed that I had to scroll to see all the fora.
Who thought that this was a good idea?
iframes are almost never a good idea from a UI point of view.

Agreed, there is way too much wasted white space at the community page. I believe the search bar should be above the All Communities banner heading. If there was a two column view all the community links would probably fit on screen without the need for me to scroll.

  • Who at Adobe thought subscriptions only were a good idea?

I've been a longtime Adobe product hobbyist and occasionally take art and design courses at my local universities. I am NOT a professional. In the past, I'd purchase an upgrade to products every second or third version and that process served me well for many years. My last version is CS6 and I love it.
Now, Adobe has switched totally to a subscription-based system and that might work for professionals, but for hobbyists, like myself, it's a deal-killer. There's no way the subscription prices are worth it to me, nor for other hobbyists. Furthermore, not every new version of software, including Adobe's, is a winner. In the past, customers could choose to not buy a problematic version. That no longer is the case. That alone puts customers in a potential minefield of problems.
Additionally, not everyone upgrades their OS with every new version. The potential exists for Creative Cloud to no longer work due to a user not running the latest OS.
I feel strongly that Adobe is going down a potentially dangerous path. Creative Cloud should be an option and not be mandatory. It makes sense for some, but not all. You're pushing hobbyists, like me, to seek other options in the future. Such would be a concern were I an Adobe share holder. Creative Cloud only provides inspiration for competitors to fill the huge gap you've created in your customer base.
To conclude, I would beg Adobe, please provide a non-subscription option for Creative Suite, as you did before. Not only is it best for your customers, but also Adobe.

BEWARE OF THE OFFER TO GOOD TO BE TRUE! Unless you know this person and know them to be on the up and up, I would shy away from this "really good deal". Many have posted buying an iPod from a person only to find it was a stolen iPod! Or that it is still locked. And when they try to get there money back or unlock the iPod with help from the former owner, the former owner is no where to be found. An iPod is one thing I would be very careful about where and who I bought it from. That being said, I have an iPod 5, works very well for me, primary use is for music, but have found it is fun to play around with. If you really need a new iPod it work well. As for waiting for the next model... It could be awhile, have no idea when the next model will come out.
Final word, unless you really know this seller, I would pass on this deal. If your iPod 3 is still working for you-- use it and save your money for the next big thing! (iPod 6). Hope this helps, Cheers.

  • When ever I launch my safari, it will stay on for about a minute and then quits on me. It has a "safari quit unexpectedly" dialog box with a bunch of codes that I can send a report to apple. im not very good with this kind of thing, plz help!

Im not very good at troubleshooting, but I have played around with the system preferences. My airport connection is fine as well as the ethernet. Firewall says its not connected, (im not sure if that matters or not?)
I have subtracted my network from the list, restarted, and then put it back and and restarted...nothing seems to be working. Iam in the middle of a correspondace course and i really need my internet back...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
    Then GULP, check for this...
Flashback - Detect and remove the uprising Mac OS X Trojan...
    http://www.mac-and-i.net/2012/04/flashback-detect-and-remove-uprising.html
In order to avoid detection, the installer will first look for the presence of some antivirus tools and other utilities that might be present on a power user's system, which according to F-Secure include the following:
    /Library/Little Snitch
    /Developer/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/MacOS/Xcode
    /Applications/VirusBarrier X6.app
    /Applications/iAntiVirus/iAntiVirus.app
    /Applications/avast!.app
    /Applications/ClamXav.app
    /Applications/HTTPScoop.app
    /Applications/Packet Peeper.app
If these tools are found, then the malware deletes itself in an attempt to prevent detection by those who have the means and capability to do so. Many malware programs use this behavior, as was seen in others such as the Tsunami malware bot.

    ashish35,
No one from Apple here - we're just users like you. All I can tell you is that electronic fail and with MacBook Pros (and most notebooks) the components are so integrated as to make a repair to the logic board practically impossible, hence the high prices charged for repairs.
Only you can decide if you want to have your computer repaired or put the money towards the purchase of a new computer. If you do decide to purchase a new unit I would suggest that you also purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan which increases your warranty from one year to three years.
    Sorry and good luck,
