Is the GTX 880m 8GB DDR5 GPU worth it?

I've been deciding to get a laptop for a few months now and bit the bullet last week to buy an MSI GT70 with a 780m Nvidia GPU with 4GB DDR5. Out of curiosity I was skimming through Ebay going through some laptops when I noticed a brand new listing for another MSI that will be out next Tuesday with the Nvidia 880m that has 8GB of DDR5 vram. You can imagine my frustration. I have heard about the 880m gpu and it having (when I first read about it, rumored) 8GB vram, but I thought it wouldn't be in any quickly available model for at least another month or two. My fault.
Anyway, I am getting the laptop tomorrow, and I am quite happy with everything inside of it otherwise. It has 32GB 1600MHz ram, an i7-4900 CPU, 480GB SSD, two 1TB 7200RPM drives, and the GTX 780m.
My question is will the 880m with the extra 4GB of ram really make a difference? I do a lot of work on Premiere Pro (anywhere between 30 second clips, to four hour videos for events), I use After Effects often, and do a ton of Encore projects. I also render 3D work on the side, although at the present it is not part of my main workload. As far as Cuda cores and the speed, they are almost identical, so it all counts on if the 8GB would actually be used. I am only going to be working on the main laptop screen and a side monitor at the most a majority of the time because I travel and edit more than work on my desktop currently.
Also, would the computer even be able to utilize all of it properly, or would there be any bottlenecks? Thanks!

That is a great laptop.
Laptops need to be plugged in to get great results, on battery power the CPU and GPU will get slowed down reducing your performance
If you would like to see how well it is tuned, configured and tweaked run our Premiere Pro BenchMark (PPBM)
If you sign up at that site you can see the results.
Remember you are running Premiere CS6 which was not optimized like the latest CC version.  This Laptop scores can be seen if you sort on the Laptop column but that is with CC and CC 2014.  I did not record a CS6 set of numbers
You can easily and safely run the GPU faster than the default settings by overclocking the GPU Memory.  I have a laptop right here with a GTX 765 and I found that for power conservation the factory GPU memory speed in this laptop was set to ~1000 MHz when looking at the GPU-Z information.  With an overclocking tool (I used EVGA Precision X) I was able to safely run mine at 1500 MHz.  Your setting will depend on your laptops cooling of the GPU.
Here are my results, note number 1 that I had a fully loaded GPU, number 2 it was running at 1514.7 MHz and number 3 that the GPU temperature at this full load was only 56°C while sitting on a "laptop" board on my lap.  The load at this time was our PPBM MPEG2-DVD with GPU timeline

  • GTX 880M downclocking for no apparent reason???

Whenever I am playing a game, I notice that my GPU clock speed is always under default clock rate of 954mhz. I know it is not a overheating problem since both my gpu and cpu stays around 75C . The GPU is showing 99% load when running rome 2 benchmark but the card is down clocking to around 700mhz for no reason. This is giving bad performance on my notebook that I should not be experiencing. Any help or suggestions? I already tried reinstalling the video driver.  Also high performance power management option under NVidia Control Panel doesn't change anything.
    My Specs: MSI GT70 2PE
    Intel Core i7 4800mq
NVidia GTX 880M 8GB (latest driver installed)
    16 GB RAM

    What the performance you have?
The performance of graphic card for different games has it's standard and should be the first concern. The GPU clock speed won't raise if the performance is already at this standard even if the temperature still have some room.
You can check for the performance of Rome II on notebookcheck.

  • GT70 Dominator and the NVidia 880M

I am about to upgrade to a MSI GT70 Dominator with the new 880M graphics option.  I read a man's PRO & CON words and had to pause until I could get an reasonable answer.  He stated "Cons: Constantly reverts to Intel on board graphics instead of the GTX 880M".  This is a show-stopper.  Why bother with such a beast of a graphics option if the laptop "goes home to Intel" ...
He has not posted your reply as of yet.  The question was given to the MSI support desk on March 31, 2014.  Please let me know what you have in response to his remarks. ... Anyone's responsible opinion will help
    thanks - i8abigfish

Why would you want to use the 880M at your desktop (where you ARE NOT gaming and don't need it)?
The Intel IGP is for when you aren't gaming.
The NVidia is for when you are gaming.
On a mobile device, such as a laptop, this actually makes sense.
Is there any particular reason you need the NVidia at your desktop? It will not make it run any faster than the Intel on your desktop.....
If anything, that's actually a PRO on a mobile device....

  • Is the GeForce GTX 960 worth the extra cost over the GTX 750 Ti?

Today I acquired an eVGA GeForce 960 FTW card with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM to test against my main PC's existing GeForce GTX 750 Ti (also with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM).
    But first, here's my impetus:
Despite the fact that the GTX 750 Ti was newer than my now-sold GTX 660, I felt that the GTX 750 Ti was a sizable downgrade from the GTX 660 in some ways, and equal to the GTX 660 in others. In particular, the results of the GTX 750 Ti during the encoding test from the PPBM8 MPEG-2 DVD timeline was nearly 30 percent slower than the GTX 660 (50 seconds versus 36 seconds) - but in the encoding test from the H.264 Blu-ray timeline, the two cards were practically equal in performance (at about 135 seconds).
And today, when I shopped for an eVGA GTX 960, I found four different models: The Superclocked edition (slightly overclocked but with the reference NVidia blower-type cooler), the ACX 2.0 (upgraded cooler but only reference GPU and memory clocks), the SSC edition (overclocked to 1279 MHz on the GPU, with the ACX 2.0 cooler) and the FTW edition (ACX 2.0 cooler, overclocked to 1304 MHz). All the listed clock speeds are the non-Turbo clocks.
    Back to my purchase:
At my local chain big-box store, the FTW edition sells for $220 - but another big-box store wants $230 for the SSC edition.
I brought home the FTW edition, and installed it into my i7-4790K main rig. The CPU is set to its default Turbo clocks while the system's DDR3-1600 RAM is set to run at its XMP profile.
Here are the MPEG-2 DVD and H.264 Blu-ray scores with both cards:
    MPEG-2 DVD (MPE On)
MSI GTX 750 Ti OC Edition: 50 seconds
eVGA GTX 960 FTW Edition: 44 seconds
    H.264 Blu-ray (MPE On)
MSI GTX 750 Ti OC Edition: 135 seconds
eVGA GTX 960 FTW Edition: 114 seconds
As one can see, the GTX 960 is 13.6 to 18.4 percent faster than the GTX 750 Ti. However, while my GTX 750 Ti cost $155 (and still costs that much at the big box store I went to earlier in the day - the one that sells the GTX 960 SSC for $230), is the FTW edition of the GTX 960 worth the extra $65? Well, that depends on which GTX 750 Ti and which GTX 960 that you might be considering for a PC based on a mainstream quad-core Intel platform.
So, based on the particular results that I posted in this post, do you think that the GTX 960 is worth the extra bucks over the GTX 750 Ti? I would love to hear/see your opinion(s).

    Randall,
While I certainly value the PPBM6 benchmark to compare various hardware and configuration settings, the GPU performance that is most important to me is simply playing back timelines smoothly with playback set for full resolution (vs. 1/2, 1/4, etc.) and scrubbing with the upmost in responsiveness. It may be difficult to measure playback smoothness, but you can use the dropped frame counter to compare various hardware.
If playback is smooth and I can scrub my timelines effortlessly, then how fast it takes to render a finished project out just really doesn't matter that much.
Even though you are mostly working with 1080 resolution media now, it may not hurt to try some more difficult media as well (aka RED 4k, PPBM H.264 timeline, etc.)
    Regards,
    Jim

  • MSI GTX 770 4Gb/DDR5 OC GPU usage is 0%

    Hi Guys,
I've noticed that when I'm using the "MSI Game App" for OC my GTX770 to game mode or OC mode,
when benchmarking the card with "MSI Kombustor" I see that the GPU load stays at 0% all the time (using the MSI Afterburner SW).
Only when I'm switching the "MSI game App" to Normal mode, or shutting it down it completely and performing Benchmark tests again, the GPU load is rising up to 97%-99% usage.
Using the MSI Afterburner for monitoring the sensors, shows the same results in all scenarios - I can see the core temperature is climbing, but the GPU load stays at 0% all the time  .
    I'm using:
The latest NVIDIA GTX 770 drivers (331.82 & tried also 331.93),
The latest MSI game app (v1.0.0.13),
The latest MSI Afterburner Version 2.3.1 & Kombustor.
Mother Board: GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R (rev 2)
Video Card: MSI GTX 770 4Gb/DDR5 OC
    Power supply: Corsair RM750.
Any clue how to solve this problem will be much appreciated
Moreover - Can someone please tell me what benchmark score is considered as a good score for this HW setup (using the MSI Kombustor)?
Thanks in advance and a Happy new year to everyone,
    SunShy

The issue is no issue. The Gaming APP blocks usage reading to prevent boost 2.0 to throttle at low usage to have a relatively stable oc clockrate (to have best benchmark results). Don't use the Gaming APP and use Afterburner for overclocking and usage monitoring will work fine.
    Thank you flobelix!

  • GTX 470 lack of GPU acceleration

Windows 7 64-bit, 8GB RAM, MSI-branded GTX470, NOT gaming, using with Adobe CS5 applications. CS5 applications are updated to loatest patches.
I've read a few other posts but I still have some questions:
    1) If the hardware monitor provided with my GTX 470 is correct, and during effects rendering in Premiere and in transcoding in Encore with AME, GPU % used is about 1%, is that expected?
    2) I posted a question on the NVIDIA forum regarding my inability to add Premiere Pro CS5 and Encore CS5 to the list of GPU-accelerated applications using the NVIDIA Control Panel. The *CS4* applications are listed but Control Panel does not allow me to add CS5. I uninstalled CS4 some time ago, before I added the GTX 470.
    3) Today when I attempted to load a Premeiere Pro project, I get a message saying that Mercury GPU acceleration "is not available on this system" and "software only" mode will be used. What changed? Any way to recover?
So basically two sets of questions:
    a) Shouldn't transcoding use GPU acceleration? Shouldn't rendering in Premiere Pro use it? What else should I expect to NOT use GPU acceleration, aside from video effects, which are pretty clearly marked.
    b) Is there a trick to configuring either CS5 or GTX470 to allow GPU acceleration to be used?

Some effects are hardware accelerated, these are CUDA effects, because they use the CUDA engine on the video card. Others are not.
The GPU usage during transcoding is dependant on the source material and the export format. For instance if you start with HD (1920 x 1080) material and transcode to 720x576 SD PAL, the scaling is done by the video card (CUDA enabled). If there is no scaling during the transcode, then there is no assistance from the video card.
The faster the CPU and the memory, the more work can be done by the GPU, but if the CPU is slow, the video card is constantly waiting for the CPU. A Phenom II X4 is pretty slow, so the GPU is waiting for the CPU and will show low usage.

  • Looking for a modded Vbios for GTX 980m 8GB

    Hello guys
I have upgraded my graphice card to GTX 980m 8gb and I have two stock VBios for it.
    1- Vbios : 84.04.44.00.12
    2- Vbios: 84.04.44.00.0A
Also, I have tried Mod Vbios but it makes my GPU reach 90C
When I use 3Dmark benchmark I get around 10680 GRAPHICE score not overall
And i saw on 3Dmark website with 12070 GRAPHICE score using 3Dmark(You can check the score by typing in google gtx 980m futuremark review).
So I think that difference happens because of the VBios.
     My CPU i7-4810MQ
    Can someone help me?
    Confirmation number: 80J495670W547491E
    Thanks in advance

    i don't have other vbioses

I want another VBios version if you have one.
if you don't have one can you give me one which is modified and give me a good score and doesn't make my GPU heat up.
heating is expecting when GPU is underload and especially OCed.
send me your stock vbios i would prepare preOC version to try based on your original one.

  • HT1379 My macbook pro 2013 is running to slow even when I am using the keyboard, it running with a delay. I upgraded the memories to 8gb but still slow what can i do to fix it.

Good morning I am confronting serious problems with my Macbook pro 2013, that is runing to slow,  even when I am writing this email is running with some kind of delay. I upgraded the memories to 8gb but still running slow . Please let me know what I can do to solve the problem. Thanks in advance. Fernando

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec bash
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I have a GTX970 but it is an unsupported GPU for Adobe CC, sadly.
So I am searching for a new GPU with almost the same specifactions but what is supported for Adobe CC.
I was looking for the GTX 780 TI, the normal 780 is supported, but is the TI version supported too?

Supported for what? The ray-traced renderer is an obsolete feature, but most cards will work for the rest of AE's features.
Details here: GPU (CUDA, OpenGL) features in After Effects
A more powerful option than the ray-traced renderer is Cinema 4D WHICH COMES INCLUDED FOR FREE WITH AE! details of CINEMA 4D integration with After Effects

  • I have a question wirh the gtx 960

Hello i would like to know if gtx 960 is too bad for after effects because when i search for system requirements it says adobe certified gpu and the gtx 960 doesnt appear in adobe certified gpu and it is a good gpu i think so i want to know if it is bad and also i want to know which card is better NVIDIA QUADRO K620 OR NVIDIA GTX 960. Thanks

After Effects barely uses the GPU for anything except for one, obsolete thing. More info here: GPU (CUDA, OpenGL) features in After Effects
Now, some third-party effects like Red Giant's Universe and Video Copilot's Element 3d use the GPU, but their requirements are independent from AE's.

  • Is the GTX 660ti signed by adobe?

I have 2 x 660ti's in SLI and i'm currently thinking of selling my work machine and doing it all in one, so my question really is. Does adobe fully support the GTX 660ti?
and yes i know that i can use CUDA to render, but is that all?

I do not know what you want as an answer.  Are you looking sales points?
Adobe does not use the SLI connection for anything the connection is unnecessary.  Yes, you can use two GTX 660 Ti cards if you are running the CC version of Premiere Pro to obtain the GPU hardware acceleration of the Mercury Playback Engine software.

  • GTX 680 Mac for GPU processing only?

Have Radeon card in Mac Pro 5,1 driving 27" display. Want to use a GTX 680 for its GPU processing capability and continue using the Radeon for CPU display. Can I use 680 for GPU only? (No output connection used.)

We just bought a GTX 680 to test on one of our editing suites, as a cheaper and still viable ugrade vs. buying all new MAC Pro's all around.
So far, the installation of the card and setup has been easier than anything I've ever done on the PC end.
MAC have the most beutifull insides of a computer I can ever imagine. Soooo pretty... *geek drool*
    But back on track!
We've used the "hack" earlier to get some if the iMACs we have as well to support CUDA in Premiere and AfterEffects, however when applying this same "hack" to the GTX680 on a MAC Pro, I dont get CUDA listed as a rendering option in either PR or AE.
Works fine on our iMACs, but I just cant get this one to work.
(And by "hack" I mean adding the graphics card to the list of supported cards in the CUDA supported GPU list.
More can be found here for those who needs it: http://www.vidmuze.com/how-to-enable-gpu-cuda-in-adobe-cs6-for-mac/ )
    Any clues anyone?

  • GTX 760M 2GB DDR5 or GTX 850M 4GB DDR3 for Premiere Pro

I'm hesitating whether to buy Asus N56JR or N550JK.
Asus N56JR come with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760M 2GB DDR5
Asus N550JK come with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M 4GB DDR3.
For the Memory, I will upgrade it to 16GB RAM
Both come with Intel Core i7-4700QM Processor & 1TB HDD 7200RPM
My question is for Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects and Photoshop, which one is recommended?
    Thank you

I have N56JR and I use it for Premiere Pro, After Effects osv. It Works perfectly, but you must remember to set the nVidia card for the programs, or it will use Your other, Integrated intelcard, and that doesn't work that well (to say the least). But Yeah, everything is smooth and Works fine.I think you must set the Premiere Pro for CUDA engine too..
