Is the serial number of my stolen iPod Touch stored in my icloud account?

My icloud account was set up by a friend that is not available to ask this question, My 3rd generation iPod Touch was stolen. I think the find my phone has been activated but the device has not shown up as having been connected to wifi since it has been gone. I just purchased a new 5th generation, but I am afraid if I register it under the same icloud account it will delete the missing iPod. I haven't been able to locate the serial number of the missing iPod in my icloud account. I am assuming it was put there when my friend set the icloud account up for me, Should I just open a second icloud account for the new iPod Touch? All of my music is backed up to this computer so I haven't lost that. Any insight or suggestions will be appreciated.

You can get the serial number in iTunes by heading to Edit->Preferences. Then when the window comes up, click the Devices tab and hover your mouse over one the iPod's backup. It should then display it's serial #.
Or look in the places described here if at all possible.

I went on a skiing trip to Boston a few weeks ago (I'm from the UK, hehehe) and on the last day my iPod Touch, along with 4 others in my year, went missing from all of our hotel rooms. Me and my friends thought it was a bit of a coincidence that we were all in the youngest year group but we were sure that our iPods had been stolen when a completely wiped out (resetted/restored) iPod had been found in one of the rooms that didn't belong to any of us as it didn't match the size (8GB ect). The Police were involved at some point as well but I don't really know what happened after that;S Anyway... I need the serial number to claim for the insurance. I appreciate any help:)

Did you register the iPod with Apple when you purchased/activated it? If so, Apple will have the serial number in the system. They may not be willing to release that information to you without really solid proof that you are who you say you are. But they will with the police.

No. It won't do anything. You must have setup Find My Phone otherwise there is nothing you can do.

Can the Find My iPhone app use a serial number to locate lost iPod Touch 4g

I lost my iPod Touch 4g and want to find with the Find my iPhone app. I'm using my brother's iPhone 4s to locate it. Can I use a serial number to locate. I lost it in school (in the Administrations office) so I know it won't be stolen. I had them search the whole building and found nothing. My school has Wi-Fi. I got the serial number from iTunes back up.

The find my iDevice works through iCloud. What you needed to have done before it went missing was setup an iCloud account on the device, then enable the find my device slider setting to "ON" under that account's settings.
If you did not do that, it is not trackable.
There is no way to track it by serial number.
Also, in order to be trackable it has to be powered on and connected to a data connection. A wifi-only device like an iPod Touch powers off the wifi radio when running on the battery, so if it has gone into sleep mode, it would not be trackable until or unless woken up by someone so it could re-acquire a data connection with a wifi network.
