Is the Swing Package in Java obsolete?

hey guys,
i'm just a newbie java enthusiast here and all the while i've been learning to manipulate data in minimal ways using the Swing package especially the JOptionPane class.
is this class/package already obsolete? a person here in school told me so? well?

Your friend probably confused it with AWT, -which was used for doing gui stuff back in the dark ages before Swing came along.
Nowdays people use Swing instead of AWT for doing gui stuff in Java, so awt could in some ways be considered obsolete (except of course that Swing uses quite a bit of awt stuff behind the scenes!)
If you dont use Swing what will you use for gui?

    I just downloaded JDK1.1.8. I tried using some methods from the swing package, so I can display output in a simple GUI.
    When I compiled the program, I got the following error:
    Welcome2.java:3: Package javax.swing not found in
    import.

    I'm not having this problem with other packages I try to import. Does anyone know why the compiler won't let me import the swing package?

    I'm sorry, but that did not work. Swing doesn't come with 1.1.8.
    Did you download another component that claimed to be swing and install it? Did you adjust your classpath to include it? Until you do that then nothing you do in your java program will allow you to use it.

  • Signing 2 different classes in the same package differently.

    I have a class B in the default package.
    I have another class C which is kept in a jar file without any package information. I have signed this jar file in using one alias in my keystore.
    class B instantiates class C and passes its own reference to it.
    When I run class B, i get an error saying,

  • HELP: signer info doesn't match info of other classes in the same package

    I have several jars which need to be signed. They contain several applications and packages which
    are split up based on which parts are needed by server vs client code. How do I get rid of this error?
    I'm signing all the jars using the keytool and jar signer in java 1.3.1. I generate a certificate file.
    My assumption is that each time I sign a different jar, the info is updated in the keystore and
    certificate file. What might I be doing wrong when signing multiple jars?
    (Yes, code from the same package may be in different jars. I don't have any controll of this,
    I'm not in charge of the build and distribution of the various packages).

  • Importing from the "default package"

    Hi,
    I've got a class ("A") which contains an inner class ("Inner") in it, and I have another class ("B") which needs to use the inner class. To make the code more readable I would like to import the inner class directly into class "B", so that I could write something like: "Inner in = ...", instead of "A.Inner in = ...".
    The problem is that all of these classes are placed in the "default package", and Java won't let me import without specifying a package in the import path.
    Is there any way to make a reference to the "default package" and use it inside an import?

    I think that you should avoid using the default package whenever possible, and in this situation you have to avoid using it. I'm curious, what argument do you have against using packages? Also, why not pull that inner class out if it's to be used by other classes? I think that your code will be more readable and maintainable this way. But then again, I'm kind of new myself, so I'd be interested to hear what others have to say.

    In Eclipse IDE I do the next thing:

    What is the syntax of the file package-info.java. Maybe you have an example?

    Can anyone throw any light on what appears to be a missing class from the javax.swing package?
    When CelsiusConverter.java from The Swing Tutorial (code fragment shown below) is compiled the JFrame class can't be found.

    This is extremely strange... If you're sure it's not a problem in your code or with your classpath, the only other thing I can think to suggest is re-downloading / installing java

    I have created a digital clock you can use. You will most likely have to change some things to use it in another app although that shouldn't be too hard. A least it can give you some ideas on how to create one of your own. There are three classes.One that creates the numbers. a gui class and frame class.

  • Unable to import the package for java concurrent program

    Hi all
    i m trying to work on java concurrent program ,but when i tried to import these classes

    the compiler is throwing
    cannot access class oracle.apps.fnd.cp.request.CpContext; file oracle\apps\fnd\cp\request\CpContext.class not found
    it is not giivng the cp package
    please can somebody have idea ,what could be the reason .

    Please download the cpcontext files whose package structure is oracle.apps.fnd.cp.request.CpContext
    from the google or other search sites or download it from application unix server $JAVA_TOP/oracle/apps/fnd/cp/request/CPContext .
    If it is a class file then convert it to java file by using java decompiler.
    then plalce the file respective folder by creating folder of this name. e.g. if
    the package structure is oracle.apps.fnd.cp.webui the create folders in myproject folder in jdeveloper
    oracle, then under oracle folder cretae aapps folder and so on...

    Sun's kit is free. There is a reference implementation of the JC Runtime environment with the kit.
    You of course can't load that onto a card. And even if you had the RE, you won't be able to load onto a card because the RE is burned into the ROM which you don't have low level access to.

    If i remember correctly:
    N = total vertices in a single fan (not including central point)
    totalN = total vertices for the whole yoyo (4 fans so 4*(n+1) total ).
    int stripCounts[] = {N+1, N+1, N+1, N+1}
    Specifies 4 fans (since array of length 4) each with N+1 vertices.
    Basically there is one TriangleFanArray, but this allows multiple triangle fans within it. The coords are stored in one long array and the stripCounts specifies how many individual fans and how long they all are.

  • Error during generation of the WSDL:  BUILD FAILED java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/sun/javadoc/Type

    When I create an EJB Transport Business Service, after selecting the jar that has the EJB 2.1 artefacts (Remote, Home, etc) the oepe plugin fails and can't continue.
    As I understand it seems that there is a problem with the classpath of ant build.xml  that oepe creates inside folder /tmp/alsbejbtransport/ to compile the bs and generate the wsdl. I checked if tools.jar is in the classpath (in eclipse) and is included, so I can't figure out wich is the problem.
    I found this in Oracle, but not helps solve the problem:
