Maximun size for  a datafile

Hi,
Oracle Version :10.2.0.1
Operating system:Linux
Can any please tell me what is the maximum size that a datafile can grow and the maximum size for tablespace.
Here i am having one tablespace which is having 4 datafile in that 2 datafile are 33 gb and the other 2 datafile size are 1gb and 400 mb.But in my OEM it is showing that your tablespace ECA_DATA is 88 percent full.
I think there is no maximum size for the tablespace but why it is how it is showing the my tablespace is 88 percent full.

Hi,
Here is the output of the query which you have given. Can you pleas tell me what is the

  • There is a maximun size for an instance?

    Hi,
I want to know if there is a maximun size for a instance and if it's possible to increase it? Because in my process the users need to atach really big files to each instance.
    Thanks in advance

Agree you can change the size of the instance in both Studio and Enterprise, but do so with caution.
Know you know this, but when you bump into the max instance size limit, you run the risk of hurting the Oracle BPM Engine's performance. This can be avoided in a couple ways. My preference would always be to go with the first option discussed below.
    Separated Instance Variable
Here's your first option. There are different categories of instance variables. Long story short - consider making the large object that you're storing as an instance variable a "Separated" instance variable.
As the name implies, it will then store this variable in a separate table from the other instance variables and will not be included in the max instance size calculation. This will have the pleasant side effect of keeping your instance size smaller and your engine performance higher.
Bump the Limit in the Engine Preferences
Here's your second option. In Studio (there's a similar setting in Enterprise) you can increase the default max instance size by right mouse clicking the project's name in the Project Navigator tab and click Engine Preferences. In the Engine category, click the Advanced tab on the right and you'll see a setting for Maximum Instance Size. Don't get carried away - bumping this up too high is a sure way to hurt your engine's performance. This would serve as a fix you could apply immediately in an emergency without having to change anything in any process.
    Use a Database
A third option would be to store large amounts of instance information in a separate database instead of as an instance variable. When needed, you'd just need to read it from the database only storing the primary key as the instance variable.
Sorry for the long winded answer. Know you know this, but hope it helps,
    Dan

  • Appropriate size for Autoextending datafile in oracle 10g

    Hi,
I am using Oracle 10g 10.2.0.3.0 on linux 64 bit with 16GB RAM, one thing i want to find out that i have my schema datafile, which set on autoextend, i have set next size to 100mb, if the file reaches to its full does it make us wait for long to create a place of 100mb or should i reduce the size from 100mb to 10mb.
What should be the appropriate Next size in Autoextend for oracle database in my case, if there is a performance problem like login delay in schema due to increasing in size of datafile then how do i find out because i do not have database diagnostic tools.
Because today there was a delay in login to the schema and EM was showing wait, but i could not find out that why the wait was there, when i check the datafile size it was 1203 MB , i thought it may be due to the extension of data file but how do i confirm this thing.
In the table DBA_ADVISOR_FINDINGS it is giving following problem
Problem PL/SQL execution consumed significant database time.
Symptom Wait class "Network" was consuming significant database time.
Problem Wait event "TCP Socket (KGAS)" in wait class "Network" was consuming significant database time.

Slow connect is not related with datafile extension.
Regarding Wait event "TCP Socket (KGAS)"

  • Best Oracle datafile size for a SAP ECC6 database.

    Hello,
We plan to migrate our ECC6 SAP database on a new Windows X64 plateforme running with :
    - Windows 2008 R2
    - Oracle 10.2.0.5.
The actual Oracle database size is more 2 Tbytes.
Please could help me to find the best size for the Oracle datafile in this new plateform ?
Today we create Oracle Tablespace for SAP with 8 GBytes datafiles but we have too many datafiles to managed.
Do you have experimented 16 GBytes, 32 GBytes, 64 Gbytes datafiles for Oracle Tablespaces on this kind of SAP Plateform ?
Thank you very much for your reply.
    Best regards.

  • Can we reduce datafile size for tablespce ??

    Hi,
I have two tablespace with 8GB datafile ..
Used of datafile size is 750 MB for each datafile ...
Can we reduce a datafile size from 8GB to 2GB !
while it is use to store data around 750 MB data ..
If it allow will impcat on my data ???
    SSM

If used amount is 750MB then yes you can resize to 2G.
    Try issueing the following (example)
    SQL> alter database datafile 'c:\oracle\ora92\ORCL\userdata01.dbf' resize 2000m;
If it is not possible, oracle will complain with error number ORA-03297.

  • Script for adding datafile to tablespace

    Hi
Does anyone have a template alter tablespace add datafile script handy?
Basically, we need to, in the event of a tablespace alert, do two things:
query that tablespace to see how much space is remaining.
ascertain the size of the datafiles added to that tablespace already (to clarify what size we should make the additional datafile)
finally, the command itself for adding the extra datafile.
    Thanks.

  • DB Size for a custom cluster table?

    Hi friends,
I have a requirement where in i need to store huge attachments into SAP DB.
For that i created a Custom cluster table just like INDX table and storing the binary read attachments(PDF/JPEG) into it.
Can some one help me how much size from DB side this table would take.
Suppose i am reading a PDF file of size 3.5 MB and storign this into my custom cluster table, which would span into 1200 records, what is the DB size taken by this ?
    Appreciate any help on this.
    SAP Version - 4.7EE
    DB - DB2
    OS - AIX
    Regards,
    Simha
Edited by: Simha on Aug 5, 2008 7:27 AM

    Hi Simha,
    simple question complex answer ....
The answer mainly depends on the length of the RAW column in the INDX type table. In my answer I assume that your database is running with the default of 16K tablespace page size.
    (1) if the length of the RAW column is below 4K on a unicode system or below 12K in a non unicode system,
the ABAP RAW column is mapped to a VARCHAR FOR BIT DATA column on database level.
VARCHAR FOR BIT DATA colunms are buffered in the database buffer pool and can benefit from DB2 row compression.
DB2 row compression may not help for PDF or JPEG data since this data is already compressed
but buffering will provide better performance.
Since VARCHAR FOR BIT DATA columns will be stored in the DB2 data pages, the overall space requirement will be
minimal if the space in the 16K pages can be used optimal. E.g. if the size of our RAW column is 8,5 K and most rows
contain values with maximun length in this column only one row can be stored per data page.
    (2) if (1) does not apply, the ABAP RAW column is mapped to a LONG VARCHAR FOR BIT DATA
         column on database level.
LONG data is stored in seperate LONG pages on database level. The LONG data is stored in blocks of
         512 bytes time 2^N ( 512, 1024, 2048, 4K , 8K, 16K ). The overall space requirement will be
minimal if the space in the LONG blocks can be used optimal.
Given the explanation above I would guess that in worst case you may need a factor of 2 more space in the database than your document size. Each additional row will require some bytes overhead in the DB2 data pages and will create additional index entries. So you may want a large maximum size of your RAW column but this will give you LONG data types.
If read performance is not critical I would suggest to choose 16K as your size of the RAW column. This should completely fill the LONG blocks.
If read performance is more critical you should choose a small size for the RAW column ( e.g. 2K ) to benefit from data buffering and to avoid sparsely filled data pages.
    Regards
                   Frank

I need to estimate a table size for the last 4 years. So what I plan to do is get a count of data in the table for last 4 years and then multiply that value by avg_row_length to get the total size for 4 years. Is this technique correct or do I need to add some overhead?
    Thanks

Yes, the technique is correct, but it is better to account for some overhead. I usually multiply the results by 10 :)
The most important thing to check is if there is any trend in data volumes. Was the count of records 4 years ago more or less equal to the last year? Is the business growing or steady? How fast is it growing? What are prospects for the future? Last year in not always 25% of last 4 years. It happens that last year is more than 3 other years added together.
The other, technical issue is internal organisation of data in Oracle datafiles. The famous PCTFREE. If you expact that the data will be updated then it is much better to keep some unused space in each database block in case some of your records get larger. This is much better for performance reasons. For example, you leave 10% of each database block free and when you update your record with longer value (like replace NULL column with actual 25-characters string) then your record still fits into the same block. You should account for this and add this to your estimates.
On the other hand, if your records get never updated and you load them in batch, then maybe they can be ORDERed before insert and you can setup a table with COMPRESS clause. Oracle COMPRESS clause has very little common with zip/gzip utilities, however it can bring you significant space savings.
Finally, there is no point to make estimates too accurate. They are just only estimates and the reality will be almost always different. In general, it is better to overestimate and have some disk space unused than underestimate and need to have people to deal with the issue. Disks are cheap, people on the project are expensive.

  • Can we decrease the size of existing datafile?

    Hi,
can we decrease the size of existing datafile?
    Thanks,

It is a very nice script.
But it does not deal with something that appears to be being 'pushed' by some contributors (OK, one, really) to this forum as a suitable 'fix' for some performance problems: using multiple block sizes in one database. It's not surprising the script doesn't deal with this, though, because Tom Kyte has never particularly approved of using multiple blocksizes like that.
Being specific, the script at Ask Tom queries for the setting of db_block_size parameter and uses that to work out what a datafile can be shrunk to. If you have datafiles using non-standard block sizes, however, then that script will not work correctly for them.
It's always potentially dangerous making use of 5-year old scripts found on the internet, even somewhere as good as Ask Tom.
It's also a good demonstration as to why, for at least one reason, it's potentially dangerous following Mr. Burleson's advice on multiple block sizes.

  • Size of portal_doc datafile

The portal_doc datafile is getting rather large. Is there a best practice or lessons learned regarding the management of datafile sizes for Portal?

Most likely the growth in the PORTAL_DOC tablespace is caused by growth of the WWDOC_DOCUMENT$ table. This table will grow when documents are added to the Portal.
The real question is probably whether the WWDOC_DOCUMENT$ table is really that big or whether it is just the High Water Mark of the table which has progressed. I assume it is the first unless you have previously loaded a large number of documents into this table and afterwards deleted these tables in the Portal.
If the file size is causing concern, consider to spread use more than one datafile for the table. If you multiple disks in your server, you can even spread the datafiles over multiple disks to increase performance.
    Hope this helps,
    EJ

  • Rman backup size for Dr db is very much higher than that of primary db

    Hi All,
My production database on Oracle 10.2.0.4 had a physical size of 897 Gb and logical size of around 800 Gb.
Old tables were truncated from the database and its logical size got reduced to 230 Gb.
Backup size is now 55Gb which used to be of 130 Gb before truncation.
Now this database has a DR configured. Backup of this DR database is daily taken which is used to refresh test environments.
But the backup size for DR database has not decreased. The restoration time while refreshing test environments is also same as before.
We had predicted that the backup size for DR database will also decrease and hence reducing the restoration time.
    We take compressed RMAN backup.
What is the concept behind this?

When you duplicate a database it will restore all the datafiles from the RMAN backup. You will find the physical space of your source database. Remove the fragmented space using object movement. Then shrink the tablespaces and take fresh RMAN backup and restore.

  • Set Maximum size for a subpanel created with splitter bars in LV8

Does anyone know how to set the Maximum size for a subpanel created with asplitter bar? If I show one cluster in the subpanel and use the scroll bar to scroll, I can see more (blank) area than I want. I just want the user to be able to scroll a cluster within a subpanel while the cluster is larger than the view area of the subpanel. I don't want to let the user scroll outside the cluster.
    Ravi Beniwal

I apologize for the mixup in terminology. Please read Pane wherever the word Subpanel was used.
Please see the attached VI for a description of my problem.
I would really appreciate any help with this.
