Is there a fan speed controller for PPC powermac G5

is there a fan speed controller for PPC powermac G5

Yes there is.
You must modify AppleFan.kext.
Code:
<key>fan-hysteresis-temp</key> <integer>14080</integer> <key>fan-polling-period</key> <integer>8</integer> <key>fan-slowdown-delay</key> <integer>48</integer> <key>fan-speed-table</key> <array> <integer>14592</integer> <integer>14922</integer> <integer>15059</integer> <integer>15164</integer> <integer>15252</integer> <integer>15331</integer> <integer>15401</integer> <integer>15466</integer> <integer>15526</integer> <integer>15583</integer> <integer>15637</integer> <integer>15688</integer> <integer>15736</integer> <integer>15783</integer> <integer>15828</integer> <integer>15872</integer> </array> <key>fan-speedup-delay</key> <integer>8</integer>
I modified the code to spool up gradually 129*f-163* then ramp up to max quickly between 165*f-167*f. Slowdown delay was cut by 2/3 from 48 to 16.
Code:
<key>fan-hysteresis-temp</key> <integer>13300</integer> <key>fan-polling-period</key> <integer>8</integer> <key>fan-slowdown-delay</key> <integer>16</integer> <key>fan-speed-table</key> <array> <integer>13800</integer> <integer>14200</integer> <integer>14600</integer> <integer>15000</integer> <integer>15500</integer> <integer>16000</integer> <integer>15500</integer> <integer>16768</integer> <integer>17200</integer> <integer>17800</integer> <integer>18176</integer> <integer>18700</integer> <integer>18950</integer> <integer>19100</integer> <integer>19150</integer> <integer>19200</integer> </array> <key>fan-speedup-delay</key> <integer>8</integer>

Duel Fan Speed Controller in PCI slot

    Hi-
Most important is that the PCI slot fan exhausts- that it isn't just an air mixer. Next, to get the most cooling, you'll want as many cfm's as possible. There are all kinds of gimmicks, and brand names like Thermaltake and Vantec have their versions.
I think the following is a reasonable performer, and has the desirable form factor
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=39598 &CatId=804
The following Thermaltake has high cfm's, but may be a bit loud:
    http://www.aerocooler.com/shop.cart?action=ITEM&prod_id=FANTT2375
At 32 cfm though, it would really help exhaust hot air from inside the tower, and help the PSU (and other components) run cooler, and perform better.
    Here's a 21 cfm version:

  • Mac Pro desktop Dual 3.0 Xeon Osx10.7.5 12 GB why do my cooling fans speed up for no apparent reason?

Got a 2006 mac pro desktop, dual 3.0 Xeon, running OSX 10.7.5, and sometimes, the fans will speed up, and run at max, even though the CPU is running cool... sleeping the computer for a minute, and then turn it back on seems to stop it for a while. Any ideas?

It would be a 5160, stock? and could be faulty FBDIMMs even.
You have never had this before and you have run 10.7.5 for.. year or more? and didn't make any changes, software or hardware?
What does iStatPro or Hardware Monitor show for sensor and fan readings? More helpful than "max" or as to how cold it runs.

  • Min Chassis Fan Speed on Z87-G55

    Hello everyone,
I have recently built a new system based on an MSI Z87-G55. I chose this motherboard in part for its BIOS-based fan control capabilities (my goal is to get a low-noise system, in an OS-independent way).
In the BIOS hardware monitor section, the minimum fan speed for system fans is limited to 50%. This is disappointing for me because I thought that the system fan headers would go as low as 37.5%.
Is there any chance that a BIOS update would remove the 50% min fan speed limit for system fans?
    Grégoire

Thanks for your answer. Indeed, a fan controller (rheobus) would allow a wider control range. It's what I had in my previous 8-years old rig (control from 5V to 12V). But, nowadays, motherboards are quite capable regarding fan control. They can automatically adjust the speed of all fans (independently) depending on the CPU temperature, which is very appealing to me.
I guess I'll have to accept the 50% hard limit. I don't understand where it comes from, though.

  • 760GMA-P34 FX CPU Fan Speed Issue

    Hi all.
I got my MSI motherboard set up with a Cooler Master Hyper 212+ heatsink. I set the target smart fan temperature in the BIOS to 50* and the minimum fan speed to 25%. I boot into Windows and the fan is around 600RPM. I apply load to the CPU and watch the temps smash through the 50* barrier and the CPU fan speed stays the same.
Thinking there's a little overhead and maybe I set the target temp too high, I tried setting it to 40*. Same deal, it gets up to around 55* before I shut down the CPU benchmark.
What gives? I thought you set the target smart fan CPU temp and the fan ramps up after that temp? I tried setting the default fan speed to 12.5 and 50% just to make sure the PWM is actually working and it is, because the fan speeds differ for each one of those settings.

The same problem! And I'm all tried everything and finally gave up
I moved the 4 pin connector with cooler to sysFAN2 and control rpm with SpeedFan
How are you able to use Speedfan with the 760GMA-P34(FX)? As far as I can tell, Speedfan doesn't recognize the Fintek IO chipset on the board. Even on the latest beta it's unrecognized.
One other oddity is I noticed that apparently the BIOS ramps up the Sysfan2 fans' speed slowly when the case gets hot, but the same isn't true for the (PWM) fans on Sysfan1, they stay at the 50% I set it to in the BIOS. I wonder if PWM actually doesn't work well for the Sysfan headers on this board.
I think I'm going to have to get a speed fan controller as this board is coming up a bit short here.

  • GT735 fan speed stuck at 30% under XP SP3 - crashes in games

    Good day.
XP SP3 appears to not let the fan speed be adjusted according to the thermals, leading to overheating and BSODs pointing to
driver deadlocks in ati2dvag in graphically-intensive games.
Even such an old game as Deus Ex crashed once, whereas things like warcraft 3 tft, even on minimal settings, crash after about 10 minutes of gaming.
Neither the fan noise, nor GPU-Z readings (it has a file logging facility) indicate fan speed variation.
Latest, hacked up (for M88 support) ATI desktop drivers didn't change the situation.
Neither there appear to be any utility for manual fan speed adjustment for the SB700 southbridge -- the AMD's own
Overdrive utility is useless in this regard. Other things tried were: SpeedFan, CPUCool, the Linux kernel and Linux's standalone lm-sensors.
Update: it was ati2dvag, not ATI2Diag.exe

This is not a desktop machine, you should let the laptop control the speeds of the fan.
And you also should use the MSI drivers as they are adjusted to the machine.
What on earth are you trying to do? Game and make the laptop silent?
I wish the laptop controlled the speed of the fan, but it doesn't -- which is the entire issue.

  • Automatic fan speed adjustment?

Currently I have the app SMCFan running on all of my Macs to regulate the fan speed in order to cool them down. And on all of these Macs I have different presets that control the RPM of specific fans. I have few different fan settings on my iMac according to the intensity of the task and the temperature of the hardward (I use MiStat to monitor my computers' temperature).
Here is the issue, my brother play games all the time and usually it drives the GPU and CPU up to 60-70C all the time and I don't want to turn my fan to maximum or over maximum the entire time including when its idle just to make sure it runs fast when my brother is playing games because: 1) it can potentially shorten the fan's lifespan, 2) it gets extremely loud especially on the iMac where the fan is gigantic. I can only go in and adjust the fan speed when I notice my brother is playing game via Screen Sharing from my MacBook Pro but I'm not always looking out for when he's playing games so there are times when the GPU shoots up to 70-80C and I won't know to adjust the fan speed.
For that, is there a way for me to set my iMac, or any of my Macs, that when the CPU or GPU activity hits a certain point (by % of activity or the temperature reading of the processor itself) it will increase or decrease the fan speed according to my settings automatically? If there is it would be extremely helpful to keep my iMac last longer.
    Thanks ahead.

You are trying to fix something that isn't broken.
OS X controls the fan automatically to protect the cpu.
Third party fan control software is not needed and may, if configured improperly, result in damage to the cpu although an Intel cpu is supposed to shutdown if it gets too hot.
The minimum fan speed is 2000 RPM.  It will start to increase around 70 degrees C.

  • Interesting spec on speed requirements for Leopard

On the readme on the DVD, it clearly says "..G4 (867MHz min) or G5."
I am not sure that these are the exact words, but I am sure about those parentheses, which would indicate that the speed requirement only applies to the G4s.
Now, it may be a typo or a mistake, but it certainly indicates that there is no speed requirement for a G5. It could also be that all G5s are over the minimum, so it's moot - this I don't know.
Anyway, I thought it was interesting.
The instruction manualette is also interesting in that it has almost nothing about the install in it, basically saying stick it in and click. It probably is that easy for most, but I would at least have included some of the install options and what and how the install process works.
I also wonder how many who have had install problems clicked "Skip" on the initial DVD selfcheck?

These manuals didn't come with Leopard? http://www.apple.com/support/manuals/leopard/
    Have a nice day!

  • Hp dv9000(dv9392ea) How do you change the fan speed settings

    Hi
I have now been looking for hours on how to change the fan speed settings for this laptop and all the things I have used do not work, has anyone been able to get it work or knows of away?
    Please let me Know
    Thanks

If you have a higher version it should include the earlier version settings.Usually each update is a rollup of previous changes plus newer.
If you are having serious overheating problems I would use a laptop cooling pad with fan/fans. Also,a less radical approach to the mod posted above is drilling some air holes in the bottom of case where the GPU is located. Adding copper shims shown HERE  or HERE on his 'About ME' also keeps temps down.

  • Fan Speed on PNY 8800GT

Hi I just bought a new 8800GT for my computer but have a problem. It runs a little hot, I downloaded a nTunes but it will not let me adjust the fan speed. Does anyone know a program to downloaded (preferably free) that will let me adjust the fan speed higher for my PNY 8800GT? If you know please could you tell me.

In addition to Riva Tuner, I like to use lots of good, quiet, high quality, fans in addition to what is delivered on the componetry.  I never run hot...ever!  I am running dual video cards, a dual core AMD processor, three hard drives, two DVD drives, a combo floppy/reader, and a whole host of other goodies including a heat monitor with several sensors strategically placed in my case.  I have never been above 33 c.  I think I would definitely consider a cooler pointed straight at that card if, for no other reason, to extend its life.

  • IMac 27, i5/i7 - Fan speed / temperatures during gaming?

    Hi all!
This is my first post in this forum. I have searched a lot in the internet, but I have not found any reliable information on this topic.
I currently have a MBP (see signature) and I am really happy with it. However, each time I am playing a game (just casually), the fans accelerate to 6200 rpm within a few minutes which is really annoying (= very loud, high frequency noise). Typical games are Sims3 as well as the Steam games TF2, Portal, and Torchlight. Furthermore, I am playing games like Black&White2, Bioshock or Chess using Parallels 5/Win XP.
I am now looking for an additional desktop computer - and I am loving the idea of buying an iMac i5. However, I would really hate to hear this loud fan noise again... (the alternative would be a Dell XPS 7100, but I really love OS X after 20+ years using Windows).
Thus, I am looking for reliable data (fans rpm, cpu/gpu temperature) during gaming (under steam os x, parallels, and boot camp). Also any experience on long-term reliability of iMacs used for gaming is appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance!
P.S.: Hope my english is not too bad, since I am not a native speaker...

It's a simple match - the more power your computer uses, the hotter it gets, and the faster and louder the fans. The graphics card and CPU are the most power-hungry parts, and are used at a high percentage during gaming.
That said, my current iMac is the i5 (27", 4850) and it doesn't spin up the fans at all playing Torchlight at full native resolution. It does start whirring a little playing Bioshock/Portal/HL2, but not so loudly - the fan speeds go from 1100 (normal, nearly silent) to 1450 or so.
Temperatures I've not followed - but they don't actually matter, just the noise that is made to keep them under control.
In Boot Camp, much the same - although I don't have a fan-speed monitor for Windows, again HL2 would just slightly speed up the fans.
But! I would suggest waiting a short while, it's 10 months since the iMac range was last refreshed so it could be just about time for them to be updated.
ps Your english is perfect, I would never have guessed you were not a native speaker.

  • Is there an utility for monitoring cpu/gpu temperature and fan speed for desektop m9200T?

My desktop computer m9200T running Win7 Home Premium crashes often.  It seems to be temperature related.
I had tried SpeedFan, but my computer crashed everytime I ran it.  SpeedFan window scrolled 20 some lines of text than the computer crashed.  Is there an utility for monitoring cpu/gpu temperature and fan speed for desektop m9200T?

    Hi,
Only have one temperature monitoring application running or you could end up with erroneous readings.
Try PC Wizzard.  Depending on your hardware, you should see temperatures for CPU, GPU and disk. At the same site you can also try HW Monitor.
I am running a custom motherboard and it comes with its own software for this purpose.  HW Monitor seems fairly complete.

  • Fan Control For PPC Mini?

Is there any possibility to control the fan in the old PPC Mini? I'm getting tired of the fan spinning up for every little thing (Flash, DVD etc).
    Software, hardware?
    • Mac Mini G4 1.33 / 1GB RAM / 40GB HD •   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm not aware of any means to control the fan of a PPC mini, since unlike the Intel version, it's not controlled by a system management component.
I would also say that even if there were a way to control the fan and make it run slower or trigger later, I would advise strongly against doing so, simply because the fan is designed to cut in at a point where the mini needs the extra cooling. Delaying it's action or reducing it's speed would risk the system overheating.
I think it's more sensible to look for whatever reason the fan is cutting in so frequently, because it certainly should not, as a matter of normality, ramp up unless there is significant load on the system. Flash can cause that in itself, but your '..getting tired of the fan spinning up for every little thing....' suggests it's more of an issue than just Flash or other such items.
I would suggest you download and install a simple monitoring utility such as MenuMeters (from www.versiontracker.com) and enable all the metering options. This puts a series of meters in the menu that allow you to see what the CPU load is, what disk read and write activity exists, how busy the system is paging, what memory is being used and what network traffic there is - all without causing notable CPU load itself. When the fan spins up, if the CPU load isn't running fairly high and/or the system being kept pretty busy with paging or suffering heavy memory usage, then it would suggest there's an issue with the mini's hardware.
If that is the case, a PMU reset may well help, but other than that, check the obvious such as airflow around the system, and that the vents are clear, both around the base and the outflow on the back.
To reset the PMU if you need to:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • Certain applications overwork my macbook and the fan goes crazy. Is there a fix or solution for this?

I purchased a 13.3" MacBook Pro in February of 2010. About a month later, I began to notice that certain applications that don't require much, Safari, MSWord, iTunes, were causing the fans to kick in at crazy speeds and the base of the computer was too hot to touch. Is there a patch or fiz for this, or should I return my macbook for a new?
