Is there a max record size?

This is probably an easy question for some of the Oracle Gurus out there. :-)
While working on other database platforms, I've found that there is a maximum size that a single record in the database can be. This maximum size is usually based on what the database platform considers a page of data.
Does Oracle have the same thing? If so, what is the maximum size and is it platform dependant (i.e. Windows and Unix have different max sizes)?
The reason for the question is that we are debating wether to make a series of comment fields on the records to be CLOBs or VARCHAR2.
Thanks for the help

This is probably an easy question for some of the Oracle Gurus out there. :-)
While working on other database platforms, I've found that there is a maximum size that a single record in the database can be.
This maximum size is usually based on what the database platform considers a page of data. Does Oracle have the same thing?I know in databases such as DB2 this is the case but I don't think it is in Oracle - although I couldn't find any documentation to back this
up. The reason I don't think this is true in Oracle is because I know that in DB2 a row cannot be larger than the block size. In Oracle you
can have a row that's larger than the block size. If a row is larger than one block it puts the rest of the data in another block(s). This is
called row chaining or row migration depending on the situation.
The reason for the question is that we are debating wether to make a series of comment fields on the records to be CLOBs or VARCHAR2.I would base the decision on the following:
If the maximum length of a comment will be 4000 characters or less use varchar2 otherwise use CLOB.

  • Max file size in OSX Tiger?

    I regularly backup my hard drive to my USB 2.x 80GB drive with Retrospect. As of the moment my backup file is 20GB's. Is there a max file size limit like there was in the old Mac os?
    Thanks,
    John

    This article may answer your question:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25557
    However, why are you creating a 20 GB file? Why not do a duplicate from one volume to another?
    Mind you, you won't get booting as USB can't boot Mac OS X, but at least all the files will be there, and you won't suffer from an all your eggs in one basket issue, where if one file is corrupted the entire file needs to be recreated from scratch.

  • Is there a max SATA disk size in OSX 10.4.11 and G4/1.25?

    Hello,
    I am trying to set up a G4/1.25 (2 gig in memory) as a fileserver with a SATA card and 2 x 3 TB seagate disks. This is the setup:
    http://lowendmac.com/ppc/mdd-power-mac-g4-1.25-ghz.html
    http://firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1v4/
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/ST3000DM001/
    The system is OSX 10.4.11. I am unable to initialize the disks in disk utility. The process starts but then halts and says that it can not continue.
    My question is if there is a max disk size in OSX 10.4.11?
    Any help greatly appriceated.
    Best regards,
    Ingolfur Bruun

    Hello again,
    I tried to work my way around armed with your input and succeeded
    By using a FireWire dock I was able to see the disks in 10.4.11. What I did was to partition the disks with ONE partition in Disk Utility and then format with GUID partitioning scheme instead of the Apple Partition Mapping scheme which I had done before. And as I am using a ATA disk as a startup disk it dosen't matter if the 3 TB disks are not bootable. They will only be used for data, not as system disks.
    You saved my day! Thanks again.
    Best regards,

    Is there a max size aperture library? Mine is over 800g and crashes, won't update to vault

    yes, all three steps, more than once. (problem started on old computer. continues on new.  Lots of HD space.  vaults fail to update on various HDs.  I just tried a new tack- turned off photostream and FB updates.  I'll restart and try again.
    During the year, did usual upgrades.  Started using scanning software, adobe acrobat, Hazel, Alfred this year.  Citrix to call into work network.  Cloud storage with Microsoft, iCloud, Snapsugar.  Who knows what might have done this!

  • "max-pool-size"   what is it good for?

    SCreator simple CRUD use:
    After a while I get:
    " Error in allocating a connection. Cause: In-use connections equal max-pool-size and expired max-wait-time. Cannot allocate more connection"
    Which is odd, because its just me using the server/database. It looks like every tiime I run a test, another conection is lost.
    Do I have to restart the server? Is there a way to say "its only me, reuse a single connection"
    why does "connection pooling" make life harder?
    Can I turn it of?

  • How to set  max-heap-size outside the jnlp file?

    Due to bug_id=6631056 It may not be possible to specify max-heap-size within
    the JNLP file for certain jnlp java applications.
    Are there other possibilities to specify this Jvm parameter?
    In the ControlPanel there is the possibility to specify Xmx for applets but not for jnlp.
    I have tried to add properties like
    "deployment.javaws.jre.0.args=Xmx\=128M" without success
    Many thanks

    Even in JNLP also you can specify the max heap size
    <j2se version="1.5+" initial-heap-size="128m" max-heap-size="512m"/>

  • Different max photo sizes in emails, beams, photo stream?

    I've noticed differences in file sizes when emailing photos from the iPhoto app, when inserting in an email, and when emailing directly from the photo.  I've found that iOS 6 is able to send the largest file when inserting it into an email. If I select email from iPhoto, the full size option is a fraction of that. If I email a photo directly from the photo itself, the full size seems to be somewhere in-between.  I sent a panoramic photo three times, once using each method. Each time I selected to send the FULL file sizes, and each time they were different:
    iPhoto: 1918K
    insert in email: 12004K
    email from photo itself: 3529K
    Is there a reason iOS 6 does this?
    Why are the full photo file sizes not universal?
    Are the max file sizes being uploaded to photo stream?
    What is the best way to get the largest photo jpg off of the iPhone aside from syncing?

    John,
    You have several options for re-sizing photos, though (continuing from what V.K. has already stated). If you want to "customize" the size of each photo, you'll need to do so before you attach them to an email. They can be re-sized in iPhoto, or they can be opened in Preview and exported as whatever size you like.
    If your images are in iPhoto, select one, then choose File>Export. Use the export dialogue to select the size and compression of the resulting file, save it to someplace like your Desktop, then attach it to an email. The choices, here, are the same as they would be within Mail, but will be applied on an image-by-image basis.

    Ok it looks to me that there are more than 20000 rows in your backend system that have to be fetched.
    You can change this limit in the Central Management Console . Login as administrator and go to Servers . Double-click on the Crystal Processign server and change the value in the field Database Records Read When Previewing or Refreshing (0 for unlimited) according to your needs. AFter the change you have to restart the Crystal processing server.

  • Automation in saving a image file with a specific max file size

    Hi everyone,
    I hope someone can help me by this.
    Background info:
    We got several image files every 2 weeks which should be edited and mainly reduced in size for web purpose. This work needs 1 work day for one man/woman to do, because he/she has to open the file save for web and then set the quality to a value were the file is nearly about 150-200 KB in size.
    The images are different, some have few colors, some have a lot of colors and there are also different in resolution. But they should not be reduced in resolution, only in quality. All other specs of the image should be kept
    Is there any possible script, plug-in or similar which can do the same (Saving with a specific max. file size) in some automatic and faster way?
    Any help is really appreciated!

  • The reporting service web service connection pool reached the max pool size

    I got a problem that it throw an exception "The timeout peroid elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connection was in use and max pool size was reached."
    The satuation is our service use 15 thread to render report, but sometimes we met such exception I list above. I didn't change any configuration in rsreportserver.config, and it seems the connection to reportserver database from reporting service web
    service was not disposed.
    Is there any configuration I can modify to fix this issue?

    Hi Dexter,
    In your case, we can try to increasing the size of the connection pool to resolve the issue. By default, the Max Pool Size is 100. You can refer to the similar issue below:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c57c0432-c27b-45ab-81ca-b2df76c911ef/timeout-expired-the-timeout-period-elapsed-prior-to-obtaining-a-connection-from-the-pool?forum=adodotnetdataproviders
    Since the issue is related with ADO.NET. I suggestion you post the question in the following forum:

    It is appropriate and more experts will assist you.

  • Setting System-Wide Max Heap Size

    We want to set the heap-size of Java-Plugin 1.5.0_14 for a company-wide rollout to a fixed size under Windows XP.
    In deployment.config under C:\Winnt\Sun\Java\deployment I am giving this:
    deployment.system.config=file:C:\\WINNT\\Sun\\Java\\Deployment\\deployment.properties
    deployment.system.config.mandatory=true
    In the respective deployment.properties I am giving
    #deployment.properties
    deployment.cache.max.size=50m
    deployment.javapi.jre.1.5.0_14.args=-Xmx256m -Xms75m
    While the cache-parameter is taking effect (visible in the Java Control Panel) there is no change in the Max Heap Size.
    Any idea how this could be achieved?
    Thank you
    Michael

    MaxHeapSize I determine with Runtime.getRuntime().maxMemory()
    Setting it manually in the javacpl via -Xmx works fine but....
    Problem is that we do not want each user to open his Java Control Panel and set this value manually.
    May be error prone and difficult to communicate in a scenario where you have hundreds of users in different locations, countries etc.
    Should be possible to set this value once installing the Java Plugin
    Thank You
    Michael

  • Dax Calculate column even when there is no record at a date

    We are creating a powerpivot model based on a table with data about worktasks of our employees.
    This is simplified our input:
    Tasknr date started dateended
    1 20140101 20140201 (yyyymmdd)
    2 20140102 20140103
    3 20140104 20140108
    Etc
    We created two measures to calculate how many tasks are opened and closed per day. That was no problem, but now the tricky part. We also want to know each day how many tasks are
    still open, even on days that no tasks are opened (or closed).
    My approach was to create a calculated column to determine how many tasks are opened up to that date and subtracted the closed tasks and end up with the tasks that are open. That
    seems to be working :
    =COUNTROWS(FILTER(Tasks; Tasks[Open]<=EARLIER(Tasks[Open]))) - COUNTROWS(FILTER(Tasks; Tasks[Close]<=EARLIER(Tasks[Open])))
    When I load this to the excel pivot I end up with this:
    Row Labels| Opened | Closed | Open not finished
    1/1/2014
            1
    0          1
    1/2/2014
    1          0
    2
    1/3/2014
            0
    1         0
    1/4/2014
            1
    0         2
    The line with 1/3/2014 should have 1 in the column [opened not finished], but because that calculation is linked to the opendate column, not to the closed and 3/1/2014 no task
    was opened, there is no value. On days that no tasks are opened or closed there even is no line at all although there could be tasks that are still open.
    I need a mechanism that calculates the value even when there are no records
    on a particular day. Our users want to be able to view the results on any date they select.
    I have considered a second table with all the dates and calculate columns from the task-table but are there other ways to do this? I searched this forum but did not find an answer
    so far.

    Hi Jacob,
    In our company we have a standard date table that is included in all of our models. What I didn't want to do in this case was to extend that table with calculated fields to solve this issue. Alternative was to create a new date table with the calculated
    fields I needed. But I don't like that also so what I did was rewrite the sql that loaded the data into the pivot so that the measures were calculated at the load. But I am also not happy with that solution because of maintanance and performance reasons. My
    feeling is that there must be a way to solve this with only dax in the loaded table.
    Jacob's answer does exactly what you want. The DAX expression in his response is a measure which you could put in your Tasks table. You don't need to alter your date dimension in any way.
    The key to this technique is that the date table cannot have an active relationship to your Tasks table. (although you could have an inactive relationship and then you could use the USERELATIONSHIP function to make other measures easier to calculate)
    Translating Jocob's measure into something against a 'Tasks' table would looks like the following:
    =
    CALCULATE (
    COUNTROWS ( Tasks ),
    FILTER (
    Tasks,
    Tasks[Open] <= MAX ( Calendar[Date] )
    && Tasks[Closed] >= MAX ( Calendar[Date] )

    Regards,
    Namrata.

    Hi,
    The biggest impact to runtime performance will be adjusting the heap size of the server JVM. This is done in Server_ID->general.  The JVM parameters entered here take precedence over parameters in Instance_ID->servers general.  The server job by far do the most work in the Java engine and so it is very important that the JVM for the server node is tuned to handle the workload.  Tuning the server JVM or even adding additional server nodes is dependent on the workload and the amount of work on the system.
    Adjusting the heap for the other JVMs will have much less of an impact than adjusting the heap in the server JVM.
    The dispatcher JVM heap settings may have a slight impact during runtime, but compared to the server jobs the dispatcher does relatively little work.  Depending on your situation you may need to tune the dispatcher a little, but my experience has been that the default value for the dispatcher is usually sufficient.
    The values for all of the bootstrap jobs may have an impact on startup time, but they will have no impact on runtime since these jobs go away once the system is up.  From what I have seen the defaults values for the bootstrap jobs are sufficent.
    I never adjust anything under Instance_ID, I'm not sure what these parameters are used for except for maybe default values when adding server nodes.  Maybe someone out there knows.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Kolby

  • How do define the limit of the max heap size?

    Hi All,
    I would like to know what should be the limit of the JVM max heap size.
    What will happen if we will not define it?
    What is the purpose of defining it from the technical point of view?
    Thanks
    Edited by: Anna78 on Jul 31, 2008 12:36 PM

    Defining a max heap space too large can have the following effect:
    If you create new objects, the VM may decide it is not worth getting rid of garbage-collectable ones, as there
    is still plenty of space between the current heap size and the max allowed. The result will be that the
    application will run faster and will consume more memory than it really needs.
    If the heap size is too small, but still sufficient, the application will do a lot of garbage-collection and therefore
    run slower. On the other hand, it will stay inside the tight space it has been allowed to use.
    The speed difference may or may not be noticeable, while the difference between 256M and 512M may
    or may not matter on today's computers.
