Is there a version of List with a move() method

I am using a LinkedList as the model for a JList, multiple contiguous items can be selected and there are buttons to allow the user to shift records up and down, and remove and add items, the same item can be in the list more than once. My problem is that in the case of the shift up and down methods what I want to do is remove the item from the list and then insert it again at a different insertion point ( a move method), this is fine for the first element but subsequent elements get screwed up because the indexes have now changed, I cant remove the item using the Object parameter because the same object can be in the list more than once.
This seems like a common requirement (that Ive had before) but I always end up writing a buggy implementation of it and I wondered if anyone knew of an open source implementation. ( I have checked Apache Commons-Collections but couldnt find anything), orr maybe my approach is completely wrong.

OK, there are ten records (index 0-9) the user selects 4 contiguous records (index 3-6) and then presses 'down' to shift them down one.
I remove the first one using removeElementAt(3),this will shift what was previously at 4 to 3 and so on, then reinsert it using insertElementAt(4).
If I then try and do the same for next record (index 4) it will be invalid , because the element now at 4 is different to the one when user made request
That is why I want an atomic mutlirecord move method.
