Is this a good standalone music production software?

I am trying to decide between what DAW to get well the first choice is not really a DAW as people say. Anyway it's between Reason 4 and Logic 8. I downloaded a demo of Reason and instantly liked it. But I have seen someone use Logic and it seemed like a cool app. My question is this. I know Reason doesn't support VST or anything but as a standalone music production it seems very strong it has good synths and a lot of effects which is what I am interested in. But Logic has a very attractive price point for an app this size and also has the ability to add VSTs somewhere along the road But how does it stand as a standalone program? I looked on the Wikipedia and it lists as it only has a few effects like distortion, delay, effects EQ? Basically with no means to try it, does anyone produce music using just Logic Pro without any plug ins? Or maybe a simpler comparison with Reason 4? I am looking at production of electronic music mostly. Thanks

It'll come down to what do you want to do? You do know that Reason is not able to record audio? So if that is anything you want to do, it won't be able to help you- it will export audio, so you can make recordings of what you've composed in it. And it'll do some mixing for you, nothing like what Logic offers.
If what you want is a tool to compose beats and synth lines, Reason does that to a great degree- although I think Ultrabeat (Logic's drum machine) is every bit as good as Redrum, and actually sounds better to me- bear in mind I am only familiar with Reason version 3. I don't think it's changed much in version 4 though.
If it's a synth you want, Reason's are a little more exciting than Logic's, but it doesn't have to be that way if you know what you're doing. What Logic offers are several varieties of synths, which can then be tweaked to sound like what you want though. Reason offers the same basic synths, and a synth is just a synth to a degree, but loads them up with effects and whatnot which can be preferable if you don't want to mess around with the sounds- you just want a cool sound right out of the box.
Anyway, here's the real deal: Reason is an instrument- more accurately a collection of instruments. Logic is a recording application with a ton of instruments. If you want to learn and do recording with the most versatile app on the market, it's Logic. If you want what Reason offers, there you go.
My real advice is to get both, Logic first, then Reason. They work together.

  • [request] Wired 0.2: music production software

    Hi,
    I have tried to make a pkgbuild for the new 0.2 release of Wired, a music production and creation software that I think looks really promising.
    The dependencies for this software are appearently already in the repos, except for portaudio and libsoundtouch, which are in the AUR.
    I have gotten this far in making a pkgbuild:
    pkgname=wired
    pkgver=0.2
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="Wired aims to be a professional music production and creation software"
    url="http://wired.sourceforge.net/"
    depends=('gtk2' 'wxgtk' 'libsndfile' 'libsamplerate' 'dssi' 'libsoundtouch' 'portaudio' 'libxml2')
    source=(http://dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/wired/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    md5sums=(02a60a5d5841766a109696736d8bc80e)
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --enable-dssi
    make || return 1
    make DESTDIR=$startdir/pkg install
    find $startdir/pkg -name "*.la" -exec rm {} ;
    The libsoundtouch package in AUR is a bit out of date, and the website has moved, so I made a new pkgbuild for that:
    pkgname=libsoundtouch
    pkgver=1.3.1
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="The SoundTouch library is suited for application developers writing sound processing tools that require tempo/pitch control functionality, or just for playing around with the sound effects."
    url="http://www.surina.net/soundtouch/"
    source=(http://www.surina.net/soundtouch/soundtouch-$pkgver.tar.gz)
    md5sums=('5e0185e81dbba2f2eed8581b7664ab04')
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/soundtouch-$pkgver
    ./configure --prefix=/usr
    make || return 1
    make prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr install
    find $startdir/pkg/usr/lib -name '*.la' -exec rm {} ;
    According to the creators of Wired, you should compile Portaudio without jack support, like this:
    pkgname=portaudio
    pkgver=19
    pkgrel=1
    pkgdesc="PortAudio is a free, cross platform, open-source, audio I/O library"
    url="http://www.portaudio.com/"
    license=""
    depends=('alsa-lib')
    source=(http://www.portaudio.com/archives/pa_snapshot_v19.tar.gz)
    build() {
    cd $startdir/src/$pkgname
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --with-alsa --without-jack
    make || return 1
    install -d $startdir/pkg/usr/{lib,include}
    make PREFIX=$startdir/pkg/usr install
    But there seems to be some problems, probably with the configuration of portaudio... I don't know how to fix it, so if someone that is good with packages and is interested in this project would help, I and probably more people that likes making music would be happy.

    Hmm, I contacted the developers and it seems that there is some bug that prevented it from working for me. They were on to it, so I guess it will have to wait a while...

  • Music production, which one to buy?

    Hi,
    After a lot of hopeless crap with PC, I decided to go with a mac.
    I already made up that for (portable) music production, the macbook pro is the best choice.
    But now I'm stuck in choosing between the 13" and 15" (17"-> too big, too expensive),
    So now my question is,
    which is, in sense of music production (logic pro, orchestral) the best choice, the i7 quad-core 2.0Ghz (15"), or is the 13" i7 dual-core enough, and save money?

    It depends largely on how serious you are using this MBP for your music production. If your music pays for your bread and butter at home, it is always best to get the highest specs you can afford. Otherwise, I believe the 13inch is more than adequate as the i7dual core is already quite impressive (I'm using mid 2010 MBP with i7dual core).
    It also depends on how many VSTis and plugins you are going to be running on your standard projects, ie how heavy you are going to work your Logic Pro.

  • How good is Boot Camp when it comes to Music Production?

    I am looking to partition my Mac OSX using Boot Camp, in order to use Windows based DAW's for Music Production.
    I want to know if there will be any differences while using these programs or will i face lags/latency or crashes while making music.
    Is it advisable?

    And I will advise against it if this is for business use. If you are going to use Windows based DAW's, get a good Windows machine, spend the savings on a good backup system for Windows so you can preserve your work.
    The extra cost and and extra complexity of a Boot Camp installation on a Mac is simply not warranted.

    You do see the devices heading on the left sidebar? If you don't see the sidebar, go to View>Show sidebar in the iTunes menu and then check to see if the device appears.
    If that isn't the problem, go through the troubleshooting steps. It could be the Apple Mobile Device Service issue.

  • I was surfing the web and got tricked into downloading MacProtector.  It says my system is infected!!  Of course they want almost $80 to register the copy that is on my laptop.  Is this a good product??  Should I get something else, like Norton antivirus?

    I was surfing the web and got tricked into downloading MacProtector.  It says my system is infected!  Of course they want almost $80 to register the program so I can then use it to clean up my machine.  Is this a good program??  Should I get something like Norton antivirus instead??

    Yes, turning off Javascript works, but turning it on and off is a pain if one has to make a trip to the preferences.
    Why many recommend the NoScript Add-on as one can drag a "allow" button to Firefox's toolbar and turn on scripts on a site per site, case per case basis.
    NoScript also protects against other web nasties, like Clear click jacking and zillions of other web based trickery.
    http://noscript.net/changelog
    Apple Support Forums works fine without Javascript running, I do it all the time, it also supports HTTPS encrpytion too.
    It might be that I'm not seeing a lot with Javascript and other things turned off, but the post box functions etc. work just fine.
    Maybe Apple is heading towards no scripts running on all their products?
    First Flash gets the axe, then Java is coming next and perhaps finally Javascript? hmmmm?
    Smart move possibly.
    Nope it's the same with it on or off.

  • System for Orchestral Music Production?

    I'm new to the current state-of-the-art in computer music production and I'm planning on purchasing a Mac Pro and Logic Pro 7 to use for creating orchestral music. I'm looking for advice from experienced composers as to what I'll need as to specs on the Mac Pro, as well as the best sample libraries, and other cards, software, and so on that would be essential.
    My work goes from chamber-like passages to using the full orchestra, often with pipe organ added.
    I'm looking to get five years or so out of this system, and want to burn my compositions to a master CD to use for CD releases.
    Current plan:
    Mac Pro 2.66, 4-8 GB Ram, 3 500 GB hard drives, USB keyboard (or perhaps a card to use Yamaha DX7 as keyboard input?), Logic Pro, VSL sample library.
    Would the 3.0 ghz machine be significicantly better? Is there a need to upgrade from the standard graphics card?
    It seems that Logic does well with more processors, so is it wise to wait for the quad core machines based on the recently announced Intel processors?
    Any and all advice, directions to online articles and so on would be appreciated - thanks in advance!

    MDD G4 Dual 1 ghz. 1.75 GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    i can echo jonathans reccommendation regarding the esx route. the rest of his advice is bang on too.
    i have had quite a bit of experience in this area. with logic you have enormous flexibility when it comes to this sort of thing.
    i have a large orchestral template up on logicprohelp.com that you might find interesting as a starting point in using logic. the way i have evrything set up, i have my score appearing as a tradional score (i notate almost exclusively with step time) and making articulation switches from within 1 esx instrument. i have 1 large instrument for say violin1 with all the articualtions saved to it, and switched by cc1 (actually i convert program changes i insert in the score). using my method you can mix and match your orchestral libraries either within the esx instrument, or from within the environment.
    which brings me to my next point - i would pick and choose between the libraries as much as possible. i still get a lot of mileage out of the old miroslav and siedlecek libraries and supplement it with VSL and some of my own samples. i think some of the VSL samples are appalling - completely unusable - and even some of their best ones are hard to use. in general i find VSL has to be smashed into shape - but they are extrremely well recorded and vibrant samples at times.
    as for computer speed - i have run quite extensive mock-ups for large orchestra on my old G4 1ghz DP. you are waaaayy over spec unless you work extremely inefficiently. you'll be good to go on any modern system.
    jonathan is correct about RAM. i run big mock-ups on just 2.5 GB and was running quite big mock-ups with less than 2GB on my old system. 4 GB will be tons - unless you are using 3rd party samplers that don't work as efficiently as the esx. if you do go 3rd party sampler YOU CAN use more than 4 GB of RAM by using AU lab. it is a standalone application in which you can load your sample libraies independent of logic but which logic will be able to access. it comes with Xcode developer kit that comes with tiger.
    with regards to VSL - i would say if you just want to get one big to get started rather than fiddle around picking and choosing (and driving yourself to distraction as i have done) then it would be the one to go for.

  • Kin onem- daughter wants -is this a good phone?

    Hi, I am a first time user so please be patient. My daughter has a Samsung Intensity and now wants to upgrade to a Kin Onem. I, however, am technically stupid. Is this a good phone to get? I believe she wants a decent camera,touchscreen and maybe internet. I heard she could get this option for free on this phone.
    She gets Itunes a lot, texts a lot and does take pictures. I think the internet is the main factor this time....Is there a better one (phone) or another one with free service or is this a good choice for her? Also, do you know if you can purchase this phone in the store or do you have to order it and have it shipped in? I also read you have to enter all your contacts.Is this true?
    What are the pluses and minuses for this phone in "simple" English! Thanks.

    Yes, this is a good phone. That is the short and easy answer. I am assuming you are looking for a phone that does not require a data plan (that costs extra). Other smartphones are MUCH better, but require that data plan, so if you do get data, do not get this phone. Get and android, windows 7 phone, blackberry, etc. But this is the ONLY phone w/out data.
    Like said above, i would recommend the Twom over the Onem, simply because it has the larger screen, more memory, better camera, etc. But, that is all personal preference, if your daughter would rather have a squarish, smaller phone, then the Kin Onem is better suited.. My personal flavor is, i like the longer, rectangular phone shape, i am much more familiar with it, and it fits the hand better. The Kin Onem is $20, and the Twom is $50 with a new line/plan/contract, but for a one-time charge, that really isn't that much and is worth it in my opinion (and if you qualify for the 'new every two', you get $100 towards a single phone, that is how i got one of these for free).
    This phone is sold in stores, but they do not have them out on the 'floor' in most, if not all stores. I only imagine that it is sold in actual verizon stores, not resellers such as bestbuy, mall stands, etc. I got mine in stores last week, but i had to ask them specifically for what i wanted. They had a test device, but they had to charge it up int he back room before i could play with it. Many believe that they are just trying to clear out their inventory of devices from the first time around, when they sold less than 60,000 devices, but i think they have alternative plans too. I hope they are seeing if they sell or not (and if more people knew about a non-data phone with wifi, they would sell like crazy in my opinion), and if they do, then they will re-start production of hte phone, market it, and most importantly, add support for the software/firmware and provide updates to fix its problems.
    You heard right, this phone does not support backup assist at the moment (transferring contacts application from verizon). However, some (it should be all in the near future) stores have recieved system updates that allow them to transfer contacts with a hard-wire connection from your old phone to the new Kin, you would just have to ask your local store if they have recieved the update. I have learned, be very specific when talking to sales reps, know what you want, sound confident, and then they will help you. Most sales reps do not know all the details, but what do you expect, their main job is to sell phones (although it would actually boost their numbers if they made sure all employees provided good customer support..hint verizon). At worst, they will have to contact their manager/supervisor and they will hopefully be more helpful.
    Long story short, this phone has wonderful features.
    -8 MP camera
    -720p HD video
    -very responsive, well built capacitive touchscreen
    -full QWERTY keyboard
    -full Zune music/video player
    -FM radio
    -and most importantly, Wifi
    You will have to manually block data if you do not want any charges appearing, but that is not too hard, and it saves any headaches of a ridiculous phone bill (without a data plan, you by default sign up for a pay-per-use plan, at a ridiculous $1.99 per MB rate..thats about $2 per webpage browsed). That is explained in my review/FAQ (linked below). This phone was originally released at the beginning of the summer as a smartphone, with an emphasis on social networking, and it failed miserably, so Microsoft/verizon have rebuilt its software and released it as a feature phone.
    The physical quality of this phone isn't top notch, but it is relatively sturdy. The front portion of the phone, the touchscreen, is built very well, with high-quality plastic that does not feel like it will break, even with a few accidental drops. The back (battery cover), however, does feel weak, and is made from a slippery, thin plastic. That is nothing that a case can't fix, though, and they sell for as low as $4 ($1+ $3 shipping..so if you do order online, purchase screen protectors and other things all at once, because the shipping costs much more than the actual case).  The phone hinge is decent, it has a quality-spring action to it, but there is a little wobble in the hinge (although the spring almost completely covers that up). The keyboard keys are 'clicky', and responsive, it has a quick repeat time on keys, which i really like.
    The biggest issue with this phone is not the actual phone, it is the abundance of firmware bugs/poor design and quality check before it was released. It all depends on if your daughter will be bugged enough to not like this phone, despite its awesome features.  I am hopeful that microsoft will release firmware updates to fix these issues, but if not, many of them have work-arounds and aren't that big of a deal anyways. So, yes it does have those problems that you see other people talking about, but they are very minor compared to how nice of features you get with the phone. Some of the major bugs/poor software quality include:
    -backup assist (transferring contacts) does not work
    -no forwarding messages
    -can't delete individual messages
    -volume buttons don't lock when phone is locked
    -can't delete or rename ringtones
    -etc.
    I have created a more detailed, albeit VERY long, full review of the device, its quirks, pro's, and fixes/workarounds. If you have time for some heavy reading, or want more information, here it is:
    http://community.vzw.com/t5/KIN/Kin-TwoM-Review-FAQ-Q-amp-A-troubleshooting-etc/td-p/347662
    I hope you find the best device for your daughter. I can provide my opinions, and i love this phone, but get the phone that she would like the most.

  • Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board.  READ ME

    Hi all. Well first off, let me start by saying that my whole life I've owned PC's. And I'm not hacker Elliet. But I've gotten to know them pretty well. All the way from Windows 3.1 that came out a long time ago (more than 10 years ago)
    So after a while of hearing about MAC's I decided to start small and get an iPod (since they are so popular here in NYC) and see what apple was about. Well I really saw that Apple had a great product and started asking about their computers. And did plenty of research. And before the new Intel Macs came out, I was going to get a powerbook. But I had a feeling a new laptop was coming out and waited a lil while and sure enough. The Macbook Pro came out. So I went out and did all my research (as to this being the first real purchase of a Apple product and knew about the possible implications of a new first gen Intel chip in a apple product litterally making history) I knew I might become a new beta tester.
    So I started looking on these boards and did 2 weeks worth of hard research to see if the Mac Book Pro (MBP) was for me. And after all the problems i saw (ex: The whine, Right speaker distortion, heat coming from it, white line at bottom of screen, etc) I never saw or read anything about AOL connectivity problems. And I know, I know... alot of you are probably going to gripe and complain about AOL sucking and yada yada yada, but please. Cut me some slack. I actually like AOL. I got on it back in 92 when it came out, and really enjoyed it. And have been on it since. I like chatting on there, and so forth. And I hope you help with my problem instead of telling me to go get "a real ISP" I do have a real ISP, but I like my AOL too.
    So now to my problem....
    I have a Sony Viao 1.8ghz PC with 512 ram, 80 gig hard drive, 10/100 ethernet port. Connected to a Belkin Router (more info below on specs of router) connected to Opt Online Broadband Cable internet with VoIP. I use my macbook pro on the wireless network at my home.
    I got a mac book pro 1.83 ghz running 512 ram on Tiger OSX 10.4.6 I thought that I would wait till a connectivity patch (which I thought would have been 10.4.6) fix the airport problems came out till I posted something. But now that I've tried everything, I'm hoping you open this thread and help me and possibly someone else out there as well. I just d/l'd and installed the 10.4.6 update last night and it did'nt help. So here's more info on my specs. I have a belkin router wireless G 2.4 ghz 54mbs router and I have configured the router with it's firewall, wap2 encryption (as it's the only selection the router has that is available that matches what airport comes with in encryption) I hid my network, and have tried to upgrade the firmware on the router.
    Now Here's the real problem. I can connect to AOL on my MBP when I connect the actual ethernet cable to the MBP's Ethernet port (after I have let the cable modem do a hard reset to configure itself to a mac) I can connect to AOL. But when I disconnect the cable and return it to it's normal config, I can't connect to AOL. I can connect to the internet via safari, and firefox, and even AOL's IM on iChat. I can use Itunes all kinds of things. I can even play warcraft 3 wirelessly on battlenet. But connecting to AOL is a pain in the @$$. It's the only proggy I have that won't allow it to connect. I keep getting the error message "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." Of course All i see for a while is the spinning black and white circle. And it goes through step 1 and 2, goes straight to 6. Then it goes blank, and BAM! That message pops up. And what's so frustrating is that I've tried every possible configuration on AOL, my router and even system preferences, for it to let connect. I even went into system preferences on the mac and went down the the Internet & Network "Sharing" icon and tried 100 possible combinations on that in the services tab, and firewall tab. I've turned them on, off, tried to make exceptions ETC. And no matter how much I play with the personal file sharing and windows sharing advanced settings and sigh every possible combination to make AOL connect via wirelessly. And nothing. I then even tried to fix the connection under AOL in setup. I've gone through and selected TCP Script, Airport Script. Cable Script, And practically every script I can think of. And nothing. I even went on to AOL and downloaded thier alleged fix to wireless accessing AOL. And nothing. I've been searching all over google, AOL's website, and all over these discussion boards and no mention of anyone even having the same problem. But please, someone out there with their infinit knowledge of how Macs run and having more experience than me, Please make this a good experiance for my first post on any board anywhere reguarding a mac. A MBP at that too.
    An update to this, But amazingly enough, I actually got it to connect to AOL wirelessly for the first time yest. But I have no Idea how i did it. I tried for 3 hours to reproduce it and no luck. I was accessing my router at it's website config screen and somehow I clicked on connect to AOL and while it was trying to connect to it, i reset the router and BAM, it connected to AOL. And I was in shock. I thought I solved it. Somewhere while it was reseting the router it connected and stayed connected to AOL till I signed off and tried to sign back on to see if I could now connect, and guess what. The same dumb message keeps popping up "Your AOL connection ended because the AOL host was unable to start a new session. Please try to sign on again." And all I did was sign off to test it, thinking I had fixed the problem. I tried for 3 hours like I stated above, and BAM got it connected to AOL wirelessly again (somehow while the router was resetting). And thinking I fixed it, or figured out the trick to getting it to work, signed off... I kissed aol goodbye again. And have been unable to reproduce the "glitch". SIGH Can someone out there please help me?
    I think I've made this message as detailed as possible, but please, can someone give me some constructive criticism on how to fix my AOL wireless connectivity problems. Do you know if it's my router? My MBP? AOL software? BTW, I got AOL software version 10.3.7 (Rev 4136.310 US) The latest version I D/L'ed from the AOL website. Anyone know If I should turn on or off some things such as personal fire sharing on, or firewall off or on? ANYTHING. Please. I've put alot of time into writing this post and making it as detailed as possible. And been having this problem for the past 3 weeks that I've had my MBP, and have waited long enough to use my AOL. If you need any further information or suggestions on making AOL work, please let me know. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this, and I really appreciate all of you in the time you take in responding back in trying to help me. I'll be monitoring this post almost hourly. So I hope someone out there can help. Thanks so much again. And help me make this transition to Mac a pleasant one knowing that there is a mac community out there willing to help a new mac client. Again, Many thanks
    In Heath and Wealth,
    Bruce
    Mac Book Pro 1.83 GHZ 512 Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    I FIXED IT!
    FYI for the rest of you that might be having the same problem. DON'T USE A BELKIN ROUTER WITH AOL ON A MBP!!!!! It ***** wirelessly. or even hard connected, it won't connect. I went to best buy today, and got a refund on the belkin. I then went to J&R and got a D-Link router. And now it works perfect. I can now chat on AOL yet again, and I tried all the other web browsers I have and messengers, and warcraft 3 online via battlenet. And it works great. I want to give you guys a special thanks for taking time out to answer back to my post. FYI! Belkin wireless G routers do not connect you to AOL wirelessly on MBP's. No matter how much you mess around on them. I highly recommend a D-Link Router. They are easy to set up as long as you READ ( AND I MEAN IT!!!) read the instructions before you set anything up on it. Use the CD that it comes with, and you'll be good to go. Set it up and it works great Almost no dead zones in the house, and now I can use the MBP with all it's cababilities. Thanks people. I really appreciate it.
    P.S. I called belkin last night when i decided to get a refund on my router for today and when i talked to the tech, after puersuading him to tell me the truth. And stop BS'ing me, he broke down and admited that AOL does not work wirelessly on MBP's. So to make a long story short this time, There you go. And one last note, I'm very happy now with my d-link router. I honestly thought it would suck. Not being a brand name router or anything. But amazingly, it works like a brand name item! Again, many thanks all.

    5) I would like a 1TB hard drive but they don't come at 7200 rpm, i guess the one in my wish list works fine.
    6) Do I need a more sophisticated Optical Drive from the  DVD Recordable in my wish list?
    I guess whay I am trying to investigate is if I can function in the music production world with a Thinkpad  W 540 with the specs already in my wish list? And, what difference would it make updating this machine with the specs below. Your assistance and comments will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

     Hi ColonellONeill, thank you for taking your time in attempt to solve my problems.
    Temperatures varies, but it never reached to unbearably hot.
    Shutdown warning: for the last couple of times, I did got the blue screen warning (that windows had problem and will restart after collecting the necessary information) on my Helix and hanged display on my external monitor. Otherwise, most of the time, there isn't warning at all.
    I doubt if there is anything to do automatic windows update as I have scheduled it every morning at 3 'O' clock! Sometimes it works from weeks to couple of months without even noticing any of these technical problems but then when it starts, it stays for weeks; it just comes and goes - never been able to resolve the issues completely; even the technician.
    (It just happend right now! and this time wihtout even warning, and Helix wasn't even running 30 minutes - temperature is normal, I can feel it's little warm.)
    Currently I am using my Helix with Thinkpad USB 3 dock connected to external Monitor with wired keyboard and mouse connected back at the dock.

  • When I try to install Windows on iMac with Bootcamp I get this message,"Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server."

    I try to get Windows 7 on my iMac 21.5-inch but on the Bootcamp Assistant I get this message,"Can't install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server." Please help me and thank you.

    I have that problem too.  There's many other discussion threads as well.  Either Apple doesn't realize they have a problem, or they do and simply don't care.  Either way, not good.
    There is a workaround that I'm going to try next.  Go to this webpage:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
    Scroll down to the middle of the webpage.  Hit "Expand All".  Now, search the webpage for the Apple product name of your computer.  It should be something like "MacBook Pro, 17-inch, Early 2008".  If you're unsure what you have, open "About This Mac" (upper left corner of your screen, Apple menu), and hit "More Info".
    Now that you've found your computer, read across the table, to the version of Windows that you want to install (32-bit or 64-bit).  Hopefully you'll find a "4" or "5" there.  Click on that number, to go to the download page for the drivers that you need.  If you just see an empty box there, then you're out of luck....
    Hopefully there will be drivers.  Download those, unzip, and then copy to a USB stick that has been formatted for MS-DOS FAT (or FAT32).  Use Disk Utility to format your USB stick if necessary.  Now, you have the drivers you should have gotten from the Boot Camp Assistant download.  You should then be able to go back to Boot Camp Assistant and follow the instructions from there.
    Hope it works!

  • Which is better MBPr for music production? 8gb or 16gb

    Hi everyone:
    I am seeking suggestions here from fellow music artists/ DJs and tech wizards to help me make the "right" decision in where to invest my money.
    I don't know wether to buy the base model MBPr 15inch with 2.0Ghz Quad Core i7, 8gb ram and 256 flash drive. I am a musician and this laptop will solve two purposes
    1) Usual everyday Microsoft Office kinda stuff and web surfing and
    2) More importantly for Music production using Logic Pro X, Ableton 9 using KONTAKT and Omnisphere along with Reason Rewire for loops.
    THEREFORE, now I am second guessing my purchase on two aspects -->
    1) Is the 8GB enough to run, say a typical setup of Ableton along with 2-3 vsts softwares, would these specs on the MBPr last about 3-5 years?
    2) Is the 256 GB SSD going to be an issue with file sizes? I mean like I can always transfer stuff to an external drive and keep creating space but then its almost like having a McLaren SLR and running it constantly on EMPTY and getting gas filled in it every 2 miles. Idk....
    Any advise, nudge in the right direction, suggestions, recommendations would be much appreciated. . Is 8gb of ram enough? I am more on the 8gb ram side because of money issue also the place I am buying is offering 10% discount (cannot configure with the specs) I want to be happy with my purchase, but I don't want to be 2 years down the road kicking myself for not having gone with the 16GB and bigger SSD.
    Which is a notable problem with the rMBPs and their lack of upgradability.

    Hi whopkins85
    Well I ended up going with the 16GB Retina MBP. For the simple reason that the 8GB would've seen me constantly second guess my decision. Plus I wanted to "future proof" myself as best as I could knowing that these babies cannot be 'upgraded' with additional ram at a later date due the whole soldered RAM issue. So yeah I shelled out some extra money, bought my rMBP from B&H in NYC through their webstore and saved a ton on not having to pay sales tax since I am not a resident of NY state.
    Another thing I'd like to recommend to you is that if you plan on running a number of VSTs or AUs with your DAW especially of the nature of heavy sound libraries such as Spectrasonics Omnisphere or KOMPLETE then I would highly highly recommend purchasing a Lacie 2 or 3TB 7200 RPM external drive. I wish I had known this earlier but an incredibly efficient (and correct) way to run DAW with sound libraries to load your VSTs on an external drive which is either a fast SSD or at least a 7200 RPM. This way your system drive doesn't get overloaded reading and writing at the same time between multiple programs running in parallel. Once your system drive runs the DAW and the system accesses the sound libraries through and external drive, it makes for a much more efficiently managed read/write process.
    I hope this helps. My mantra for technology is, when in doubt go with max specs on a machine.
    Thanks for your post

  • Basic Equipment for Electronic Music Production

    Hi Everyone,
    This would be my first question here so please be warned of my inexperience. I just would like to get some advice on what kind of gear is recommended for electronic music production. By that I mean:
    Do I need an audio interphase if I wont be connecting any hardware?
    What plugins should I look at that would work with my MBP and Logic Pro 7.2?
    Which learning tools should a newbie get?
    I currently have the last two items mentioned as well as M-Audio BX8s with a SBX sub, M-Audio O2 as a controller, and that's pretty much it. Your advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JV

    Absolutley get at least 1GB RAM. Good Monitors/Interface. As far as Plugins go, the dynamics are the ones IMO which need the most upgrading. You get EXS24 and a large Library to go with it, as well as many synths. Logic comes with a huge soundset. You should be the judge as to what your tracks are missing. Logic's plugs alone will be able to do amazing tracks. If you are new to this, learning how the synths work (programming them well) and getting your mixing and arranging in place is the priority. Logic's sounds should keep you happy for at least 1/2 year, by then you'll have a good idea as to what you are looking for. Ask alot of questions, theere's alot to learn. Another place Logic doesn't really get far into is Synthesis which requires a good understanding of math (FM, Additive, etc)- the advanced types of these synthesizers are not so common today. FM was very popular but it is more than many people care to get in to. I use FM all the time though.

  • Help me...does this look good?!?!?

    Hey all,
    I want a G4 to use in my music studio, have found one on ebay, does this look good to you...
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8792713494&rd=1&sspagename= STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
    If you can't access that, basically it's this...
    Computer is in excellent condition, has been well loved and well upgraded:- 200GB hard disk (5400rpm) Dual 867 MHz, 1MB L3 cache per processor 1.25GB DDR SDRAM 16x DVD+/- RW (Superdrive) 4x DVD+ RW (original Superdrive) 4x USB 2.0 ports 2x USB 1.0 ports 2x Firewire ports Airport Card (WiFi) Ethernet Card 56kbps Modem Digital in/out for audio Again it is in excellent condition, well loved.
    Oh and there is still 2 slots left for memory upgrade and 4 other slots for your other upgrades, i.e. more firewire, usb, graphics card, music adaptors etc. I used the machine mostly for video editing and graphic design and it handles everything I throw at it. It is a beast of a computer but sadly by job entails I have a laptop now I will also include all the software that comes with it.
    Think it sounds good? What price do you reckon???
    Thank you!

    G4 I hope

    If you do decide to bid I'd keep in mind that it's the base model MDD G4 with a 133MHz system bus (the others had 167MHz). It's also one of the original models that got the nickname of wind tunnel as they could be fairly noisy, so much so that Apple under went a power supply replacement program using quieter fans, which may be an issue if it's intended for audio use. I'm not sure whether it's had the power supply replaced, but Verax also offered a noise reduction kit, which may give some indication of how noisy it can be.
    I'm not trying to put you off though, but I'd keep the above in mind if you do intend to place a bid.

  • Safe to run music production programs via vm fusion?

    Hello hello,
    I have been running a windows-only music production progam via bootcamp for a couple months, but I'm frankly tired of having to reboot all the dang time and I'm worried frequent restarts is not healthy for the computer.  So, I want to try vm fusion to run this program on windows concurrently with whatever else I'm running on osx.  However, because music produciton programs tend to suck up a lot of the cup power...is this a good idea, given the fact that vm fusion will essentially allocate one core to windows and the other to osx?  Or do I have the wrong idea of how cpu is allocated via vm fusion?
    I'm using the 2.7 Ghz dual-core i7 mac book pro (early 2011 model).  The music program I mentioned is FL Studio 9 XL Producers Edition.
    Thanks for any help in this confusing topic : )

    Try it. Seeing as you already have Windows installed using Boot Camp, just download the free trial of Fusion and tell it to use your Boot Camp installation of Windows as the target OS. You don't even have to re-install Windows.
    If it works for you buy the license and continue using it. If it does not work for you don't buy the kicense and uninstall Fusion. You don't have to change anything with respect to your Boot Camp installation.
