All of the A1181 polycarbonate MacBooks use the A1184 60W MagSafe power supply/charger and the A1185 battery. These are the Apple part numbers. Other manufacturers make equivalent replacement products, but the quality may not be acceptable.

I want to remove the monitor from my 17" Macbook Pro 2008 to use as an external for my Macbook Pro 15" 2012. How can I convert lvds to Thunderbolt and power the monitor?
It's almost impossible. The new iMacs have a Target Display Mode, but it's built to do that. Without ripping your screen out, finding an acceptable power supply, frame, and whatever electronics to convert a Thunderbolt signal to the screen, the cost will be much larger than buying a cheaper HiDef monitor that runs with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cable to your MacBook 15. In fact, you can sell your 17" MBP for a lot of money, unless it's broken or something, buying you a really sweet monitor.

Many thanks for your speedy response. First of all, I must point out that I'm a Brit and a technophobe. This may explain my possibly foolish questions and answers. I don't need a voltage converter but do need some kind of surge protector. I've lived in India so have experienced first hand the devastating impact of fluctuating electricity. I said I needed a line conditioner because according to the recommended guide book: "The electricity supply in Albania is theoretically 220 volts AC. In practice it is often very much lower. Laptop batteries are usually resilient enough to cope with power spikes, but if you are travelling with sensitive equipment which could be damaged by voltage surges or brownouts, you should obtain a line conditioner......." I checked on google and two recommended ones were APC Surgearrest 3020J and Tripp-Lite SK 12OUSB. I don't remember seeing Targus, Belkin or Kensington mentioned. What I'm really looking for is a good efficient one which is small enough to carry with me on any trip to a country with a dicy electricity supply. The price is less important. As you rightly said, it's important not to cut corners with electricity. My main concern is protecting my UK bought Mac. I'd be really grateful for your advice. I don't have a clue what to buy. Where can I get an additional power source for my MacBook Pro?
I am travelling to Europe next week and will be travelling on the road quite often. I would like to get some work done during that time. My laptop battery will inevitably run out of power during that time and I would like to carry an additional power source with me so I can get some extra juice when I am nowhere near an outlet.
I have the latest MacBook Pro where the battery is not removable.

Screen sharing setup in 10.5, 10.6 are described by the links by operating system. 10.7 is fairly similar to 10.6.
And if both Macs have Firewire, you can setup a Firewire over IP network for fast communication between machines. Note if you have two different Firewire ports a 6 pin to 9 pin Firewire cable does exist. There are no Firewire to USB cables. -

Other than Apple there are only two vendors with which I have personal experience and can recommend: Crucial and OWC. People have reported problems with many other brands, yet Crucial and OWC's prices are as good as any you are likely to find.
Go to Crucial and download the little app that examines your system and recommends RAM upgrade options.
Their prices are good but don't have to buy memory from them - determine what you need and buy it from Crucial or OWC / MacSales. You'd be paying Apple a lot more than either one of them, and you don't have to. -
