ISE EAP SSL/TLS Tunneling Certificates

Hi,
I am working on an ISE implementation that is going to perform authentcation accross several domains using LDAP. The domains that I have in my environment are a production and pre-production/testing domains. Currently my ISE appliances are joined to the production AD and are using certificates from the CA in our production AD. The problem I am having is I can only assign one Local Certificate for use for SSL/TLS tunneling for EAP authentcations. This means that when I try and authenticate a device that is not part of the production active directory (pre-production), using the seperate LDAP instance as an identity store, its attempting to create a tunnel using a cert that is not from the pre-production CA, and thus fails with the following error...
Authentication failed :
12321 PEAP failed SSL/TLS handshake because the client rejected the ISE local-certificate
This is because the device built in pre-production does not have the production CA's as trusted entites. My question is, is it possible to define multiple certificates from seperate CA's for use for SSL/TLS tunneling?
Cheers

Hello,
This error means that the supplicant does not trust the ISE PSN certificate.
Resolution:
Check whether the proper server certificate is installed and configured for EAP
by going to the Local Certificates page (Administration > System > Certificates > Local Certificates ).
Also ensure that the certificate authority that signed this server certificate is correctly installed in client's supplicant. Check the previous steps in the log for this EAP-TLS conversation for a message indicating why the handshake failed. Check OpenSSLErrorMessage and OpenSSLErrorStack for more
information.

  • SSL/TLS security certificate data match with XML Payload in SAP PI

    Hi,
We are working on a solution where we would want to use SSL/TLS or WS Security with client server mutual authentication using client server certificates.
But, once the sender is authenticated using the certificates, can the XML payload be matched for the correctness with the certificate information? Is this available to PI integration engine at any time? Like Sender A autheticated as A using certificates, must be stopped if his XML payload is saying that he is sender B (which is most unlikely if we trust the senders but did not want to leave a loophole).
    Any ideas here?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Vijay

    Hi Wolfgang,
Cross-posting is discouraged and against the forum rules, because it is misused and makes a mess of the search due to distributed discussions and answers.
I will move it to the PI forum and add a watch on it as it is security forum related.
Unfortunately, the forum software does not have the option to "mirror" threads.
    Cheers,

  • ISE EAP-Chaining with machine, certificate and domain credentials

    Good morning,
A customer wants to do the following for their corporate wireless users (all clients will be customer assets):
Corp. wireless to authenticate with 2-factor authentication:
    •1. Certificate
    •2. Machine auth thru AD
    •3. Domain creds
When client authenticates, they want to match on 2 out of the 3 conditions before allowing access.
Clients are Windows laptops and corporate iPhones.
Certs can be issued thru GPO and MDM for iPhones
Client supplicant on laptops is native Windows - which I understand is a compatibility issue from this thread: https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2185627
My first question is: can this be done?
Second question: how would i implement this from an AuthC/AuthZ perspective?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrew

You can do this configuring anyconnect with NAM modules on endpoints! But I don't make sense configure some clients with certificate and others with domains credentials...
For your information, I'm actually configuring EAP-Chaining on ISE 1.2 and i'm gotting some problems. The first one I got with windows 8, for some reason windows was sending wrong information about the machine password but I solved the problem installing a KB on windows 8 machines (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2743127/en-us). The second one I got with windows 7 that are sending information correctly about domain but wrong information about user credentials, on ISE logs I can see that windows 7 are sending user "anonymous" + machine name on the first longin... after windows 7 start if I remove the cable and connect again the authentication and authorization happen correctly. I still invastigate the root cause and if there is a KB to solve the problem as I did with windows 8.
Good luck and keep in touch.

  • ISE Problem: EAP-TLS failed SSL/TLS handshake because of an unknown CA in the client certificates chain

Hello, I´m stucked with this problem for 3 weeks now.
I´m not able to configure the EAP-TLS autentication.
In the "Certificate Store" of the ISE server I have Installed the Root, policy and the Issuing certificates as "trust for client authentication",and in the Local store I have a certificate issuing for the same issuing authority which sign the thw client ones.
The ISE´s certificate has been issued with the "server Authentication certificate" template.
The clients have installed the certificates  also the certificate chain.
When I try to authenticate the wireless clients I allways get the same error: "     Authentication failed : 12514 EAP-TLS failed SSL/TLS handshake because of an unknown CA in the client certificates chain"
    and "OpenSSLErrorMessage=SSL alert
    code=0x230=560 ; source=local ; type=fatal ; message="Unknown CA - error self-signed certificate in chain",OpenSSLErrorStack=  1208556432:error:140890B2:SSL routines:SSL3_GET_CLIENT_CERTIFICATE:no certificate returned:s3_srvr.c:2720"
I don´t know what else can I do.
    Thank you

    Hi Rik,
the Below are the certificate details
    ISE Certificate Signed by XX-CA-PROC-06
    User PKI Signed by XX-CA-OTHER-08
In ISE certificate Store i have the below certificates
    XX-CA-OTHER-08 signed by XX-CA-ROOT-04
    XX-CA-PROC-06 signed by XX-CA-ROOT-04
    XX-CA-ROOT-04 signed by XX-CA-ROOT-04
    ISE certificate signed by XX-CA-PROC-06
I have enabled - 'Trust for client authentication' on all three certificates
this is unchecked - 'Enable Validation of Certificate Extensions (accept only valid certificate)'
when i check the certificates of current user in the Client PC this is how it shows.
XX-CA-ROOT-04 is listed in Trusted root Certification Authority
and XX-CA-PROC-06 and XX-CA-OTHER-08  are in Intermediate Certificate Authorities

Hi I have a customer that we've deployed ISE 1.2 and WLC 5508s at.  Customer is using EAP-TLS with and everything appears to setup properly.  Users are able to login to the network and authenticate, however, frequently, I'm getting the following error in ISE authentication logs:

I'm not sure if this is cosmetic or if this is something that I should be tracking down.  System isn't in full production yet, but every client seems to be working and there is no expired cert in the chain.  Any ideas what to check?

    Hello Dino,
thanks very much for your reply.
The client uses a machine-certificate, the PKI is not a microsoft one, but a third party PKI.   The certificate is fresh and valid, the root-cert is installed and checked to be validated against it for the login.
Clock is correct too. The same setup works flawlessly in Windows 7 and XP.
EKU is set on the certificate (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)
I suspect the cert-setup itself, but don't get a clue where this might stuck...

  • Cisco ISE - EAP-TLS - Machine / User Authentication - Multiple Certificate Authentication Profiles (CAP)

    Hello,
I'm trying to do machine and user authentication using EAP-TLS and digital certificates.  Machines have certificates where the Principal Username is SAN:DNS, user certificates (smartcards) use SAN:Other Name as the Principal Username.
In ISE, I can define multiple Certificate Authentication Profiles (CAP).  For example CAP1 (Machine) - SAN:DNS, CAP2 (User) - SAN:Other Name
Problem is how do you specify ISE to check both in the Authentication Policy?  The Identity Store Sequence only accepts one CAP, so if I created an authentication policy for Dot1x to check CAP1 -> AD -> Internal, it will match the machine cert, but fail on user cert.
    Any way to resolve this?
    Thanks,
    Steve

You need to use the AnyConnect NAM supplicant on your windows machines, and use the feature called eap-chaining for that, windows own supplicant won't work.
an example (uses user/pass though, but same concept)

  • EAP-TLS error .........failed SSL/TLS handshake because of an unknown CA in client certificate chain

    Hi,
I am using 802.1x and EAP-TLS as authentication protocol. The clients are not able to pass the authentication the error log on ACS is
Authentication failed: EAP-TLS handshake failed SSL/TLS handshake because of an unknown CA in the client certification chain.
I have installed certificates on the WLC and ACS, however authentication is unsuccessful.
Can anybody help regarding this issue.

    Hi Sandeep,
Web auth certificate is defult certificate in wlc but you can also use your own(3rd party).
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/wireless-mobility/wlan-security/70584-csr-wlc-00.html
Virtual interface : This interface handles any mobility management, VPN Termination, Web authentication, and is also a DHCP relay for WLAN clients.
Yes its interconnected, the purpose for this entry is so that the controller knows the name of the of the certificates to virtual address translation.
    1. Guest Client go to google.com
    2. Client goes to DNS (the one its is assign in DHCP)
    3. DNS resolves the DNS for google.com
    4. Client then attempts to go to google.com
    5. Controller intercepts GET and replaces it with a 1.1.1.1
    6. Controller then takes the 1.1.1.1 and translates this to the DNS name to negat the (accpet this cert screen)
    7. DNS then gets resolve to the name (example guest.xxx.com)
    8. Controller presents the guest screen
    Hope it helps.

  • Questions about P-EAP (TLS-Tunnel)

Are both authentication processes (machine and user) done in the secure TLS-Tunnel?
How important is the client option "verify server-zertificate" within PEAP?
    any input is very welcome
    Oliver

The actual exchange of the authentication credential does take place within the TLS Tunnel - however in the initial EAP-START messages at the beginning of the 802.1x authentication the client has the option of sending a null string or the users actual username before the certificate exchange occurs to setup the tunnel. This behavior is specific to which supplicant you use, and its sometimes considered a privacy leak.
I consider it extremely important that the 'verify server-certificate' option is used. When this option isn't selected, the client will not authenticate the certificate and uses it only as material for setting up the TLS tunnel. This leaves your clients open to man in the middle attacks and other wireless AP spoofing attacks. That doesn't mean however that many sites don't use this option, since they often use self-signed certificates for their wireless radius authentication server and don't want to bother with installing its root certificate on all of their clients to properly authenticate it.

  • Sharepoint and SSRS report trust relationship ssl/tls secure channel remote certificate is invalid

I have no experience with sharepoint at all. but this is what I observed.
I intermittently getting this error message on my sharepoint. could not establish trust relationship for the ssl/tls secure channel. Remote Certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.
    Screnshot of the error
This is how the sharepoint page layout.
I have report.aspx. and below is the content of the aspx file.
    The url is http://sharepoint.COMPANY.com/Pages/Report.aspx.
    The URL is intranet only.
The sharepoint is hosted in SERVER1 and the SSRS is hosted in SERVER.
I observed this error happens on both HTTP and HTTPS http sharepoint COMPANY com/Pages/Report.aspx OR https sharepoint COMPANY com/Pages/Report.aspx
So far, the step I did was to follow this blog http://krishnasangani.blogspot.ca/2013/06/the-remote-certificate-is-invalid.html Restarted
IIS in SERVER1 AND SERVER2. but the problem persist. Another I have done is to click the certificate in internet explorer and everything looks ok on that side to (certificate is valid)
It seems to only happen earlier during the morning, then it fixes itself around 9 Oclock. It has been on going for about 2 weeks. Please help troubleshooting this.

Please let us know if you are using
SharePoint communicates to an external service via HTTPS
    Please try perform following steps:
Fix is to setup a trust between SharePoint and the server requiring certificate validation.
In SharePoint Central Administration site, go to “Security” and then “Manage Trust”.  Upload the certificates to SharePoint.  The key is to get both the root and subordinate certificates on to SharePoint.
The steps to get the certificates from the remote server hosting the WCF service are as follows:
    1.  Browse from IE to the WCF service (e.g., https://remotehost/service.svc?wsdl)
    2.  Right click on the browser body and choose “Properties” and then “Certificates” and then “Certificate Path”.
This tells you the certificate chain that’s required by the other server in order to communicate with it properly.  You can double-click on each level in the certificate chain to go to that particular certificate, then click on “Details” tab, “Copy to
File” to save the certificate with the default settings.
As an example, get both VeriSign & VeriSign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL CA.

  • ISE: Guest SSL Certificate Not Trusted Error

    Team,
We are building an ISE Demo for an event, I configured the Guest Access and it is working fine. the problem is that when the guests (Event attendess) try to access the internet they will be reditrected to teh ISE for Guest Authentication. The guest will get the below error message which doesn't look good because the ISE has the self-signed certificate and it doesn't have a public trusted certificate.
I tried to generate a trail SSL certificate from Thawte and Symentec but both replied that we couldn't verify the information you have provided. I believe this is because my domain is not publicly resgitered (I created this domain internally for the event)
Please advice what is the solution for this issue. I don't want my guest/attendees to see the error message. It doesn't look for to demonstrate ISE.
    Please advice
    Thanks in advance

The only solution that can competely resolve your issue is to get a certificate from any trusted  CA, like Verisign, Thawte, etc. Cost for that is typically $100 per year. Other solution is to use certificate from StartSSL. They have easy procedure for issuing ceritifcates and it's free, but in some browsers that window still may  appear sometimes.

  • ISE - EAP-FAST PAC Provisioning - Identity field??

Hi all, very simple question regarding the fields in the PAC provisioning section of ISE. Basically wondering what the "identity" field under machine and tunnel PAC is meant to be? I am currently planning an EAP-FAST deployment and this is the only area I am wondering about. Essentially planning to auto-provision the PAC hopefully using authenticate in-band. The Cisco doco is a little vague on this particular field.
Thanks in advance - have googled this for a day or so and frankly cannot find the information that I want.

    Use
    PAC
•Tunnel PAC Time To Live—The Time to Live (TTL) value restricts the lifetime of the PAC. Specify the lifetime value and units. The default is 90 days. The range is between 1 and 1825 days.
•Proactive PAC Update When: of PAC TTL is Left—The Update value ensures that the client has a valid PAC. Cisco ISE initiates an update after the first successful authentication but before the expiration time that is set by the TTL. The update value is a percentage of the remaining time in the TTL. The default is 90%.
•Allow Anonymous In-band PAC Provisioning—Check this check box for Cisco ISE to establish a secure anonymous TLS handshake with the client and provision it with a PAC by using phase zero of EAP-FAST with EAP-MSCHAPv2. To enable anonymous PAC provisioning, you must choose both of the inner methods, EAP-MSCHAPv2 and EAP-GTC.
•Allow Authenticated In-band PAC Provisioning—Cisco ISE uses SSL server-side authentication to provision the client with a PAC during phase zero of EAP-FAST. This option is more secure than anonymous provisioning but requires that a server certificate and a trusted root CA be installed on Cisco ISE.
When you check this option, you can configure Cisco ISE to return an Access-Accept message to the client after successful authenticated PAC provisioning.
–Server Returns Access Accept After Authenticated Provisioning—Check this check box if you want Cisco ISE to return an access-accept package after authenticated PAC provisioning.
•Allow Machine Authentication—Check this check box for Cisco ISE to provision an end-user client with a machine PAC and perform machine authentication (for end-user clients who do not have the machine credentials). The machine PAC can be provisioned to the client by request (in-band) or by the administrator (out-of-band). When Cisco ISE receives a valid machine PAC from the end-user client, the machine identity details are extracted from the PAC and verified in the Cisco ISE external identity source. Cisco ISE only supports Active Directory as an external identity source for machine authentication. After these details are correctly verified, no further authentication is performed.
When you check this option, you can enter a value for the amount of time that a machine PAC is acceptable for use. When Cisco ISE receives an expired machine PAC, it automatically reprovisions the end-user client with a new machine PAC (without waiting for a new machine PAC request from the end-user client).
•Enable Stateless Session Resume—Check this check box for Cisco ISE to provision authorization PACs for EAP-FAST clients and always perform phase two of EAP-FAST (default = enabled).
Uncheck this check box in the following cases:
–If you do not want Cisco ISE to provision authorization PACs for EAP-FAST clients
–To always perform phase two of EAP-FAST
When you check this option, you can enter the authorization period of the user authorization PAC. After this period, the PAC expires. When Cisco ISE receives an expired authorization PAC, it performs phase two EAP-FAST authentication.
•Preferred EAP Protocol—Check this check box to choose your preferred EAP protocols from any of the following options: EAP-FAST, PEAP, LEAP, EAP-TLS, and EAP-MD5. By default, LEAP is the preferred protocol to use if you do not enable this field.

  • How to Use a Certificate for Two Way SSL and another certificate for WS Security Header at Client Console Application(C# Dotnet)

    Hi,
I want to consume a Java Web service from Dotnet based client Application. The service require one Certificate("abc.PFX") for Two Way SSL purpose and another certificate("xyz.pfx") for WS security purpose to be passed from client Application(Dotnet
Console based). I tried configuring the App.config of Client application to pass both the certs but getting Error says:
Could not establish secure channel for SSL/TLS with authority "******aaaa.com"
Please suggest how to pass both the certs from client Application..

    Hi,
This problem can be due to an Untrusted certificate. So you need just full permissions to certificates.
And for more information, you could refer to:

    Hi Mitul,
    Thanks for your reply.
It’s strange, if your old build definitions can work using the same TFS Build Server, that indicate your TFS Server configuration is correct and can works. But only new build definition with default TfvcTemplate.12.xaml template cannot build successful.
Please share your TFS Server detailed environment information here. And share your
Build Service Properties dialog screenshot here.
Try to clean the Cache for TFS 2013 manually(delete the content of the folder only, not the cache folder itself):
Clean the Cache folder on Server machine. The folder path is:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 12.0\Application Tier\Web Services\_tfs_data.
After cleaned, on Server machine, click Start and select
Run… to open the dialog box, then input iisreset.exe and click OK, wait it run completely.
Additionally, you can run the TFS 2013 Power Tools BPA to scan the installation of your TFS Server.
