ISight: MSN Messenger?

Hi, I was wondering if there is a way to use MSN Messenger, and if not is the iSight the only webcam that works with macs?

... was wondering if there is a way to use MSN Messenger ...See the Jabber and MSN/Microsoft Messenger sections of Common PC Chat Applications and iChat for options available to you.
Both Mac iChat AV Jabber and MSN Messenger on Mac to another MSN Messenger user are text chat only -- no video or audio.
... if not is the iSight the only webcam that works with macs?
Which webcam you use does not impact your MSNM options. Certainly you do have webcam options other than iSight.
For more about webcams on Mac, see iSight versus DV Camcorder or other web-cam.

  • Macbook Pro built-in iSight in Adium and MSN Messenger?

All of my contacts (about 100 or so) have MSN messenger accounts. Is there a way for me to use my built-in iSight as a webcam in Adium or MSN Messenger? It just seems pointless otherwise since I only know 2 or 3 other people with .mac or AIM accounts that I could chat to via iChat.

  • Can you use isight with msn messenger?

why woulnd't i be able to use my isight for a webcam on msn when it's just right there built into my computer!!! so lame, does anyone know how to?

    Hi
Because MSN messenger for mac does not do video
Have a look at aMSN http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14200
    And Mercury http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14970 For video.
If your talking to PC's you might be better off trying Skype http://www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/20beta.html and the PC needs Skype as well.

  • Using iSight with MSN Messenger

I have MSN messenger 5.0 for a Mac - I cannot seem to figure out how to use the iSight with it . Has any1 been able to do this or are the 2 not compatible?
    Thanks

    Hello Alefiyah,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Grant it right. No video in MSN for Mac.
If you are interested, see the MSN, Yahoo, Win Messengers & iChat? FAQ for info on how to use iChat AV with MSN Messenger for text chat.
Has any1 been able to do this or are the 2 not compatible?
Not currently. See Peter Tulipan1's recent Can iChat have video chat with Windows Messenger? thread for info about the development of video via the MSNM Server by using an application called Mercury Messenger on the Mac. Note that their Support Info says two-way video does not work at this time, though.

update to 10.4.2. It correct several issues with the previous Tiger versions. I suggest the 58 MB Mac OS X Update 10.4.2 Combo. I also suggest that you repair permissions

the update. See Gulliver's Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System maintenance FAQ for why.)

  • IChat + MSN Messenger Contacts + iSight = Video Conferencing

I have recently converted my windows-based laptop to a MacBook. Thus, I am very new to this new system. I need some assistance or guidance as I am unsure of how I can:
    1) use iChat or equivalent with video conferencing features (because MSN Messenger for Mac does not have important feature) to video conference with my contacts in MSN Messenger for Windows?
    2) still be able to chat with my contacts in MSN Messenger for Windows, without them installing iChat or equivalent?
    3) use the built-in iSight to video conference with them?
    4) configure iChat or equivalent to chat with my contacts if all of the above are possible?
    Much appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    1) If video conferencing is so important you could use skype or a jabber client that supports both video and audio. Your friends have to install skype or a jabber client too though.
    2) With a jabber account and iChat you can chat with your buddies on msn, yahoo, aim google-talk, ICQ etc. This is done through Jabber-gateways or transports. JabberLive! ( http://jabberlive.org ) has many gateways you can register with.
    3) Possible through skype or a jabber client that supports both video and audio.
    4) If you want to chat with your buddies using iChat you definitely have to get a jabber account. ( I can recommend http://jabberlive.org)

  • Using the built in Isight camera with MSn Messenger

I have a new Macbook and want to video chat with MSN Messenger users.

I've also got XP running on my Macbook and have installed MSN Messenger running but I cant seem to get XP to recognize the built in camera. Is there a way to do this?

  • Dual screen imac uses wrong inbuilt webcam for msn messenger video chat.

I have an imac and apple display set up, using msn messenger the webcam built into the apple cinema display is used not the imac webcam itself, can I change this so the webcam built into the new imac is used, thanks.

Your info shows you are using some "Other OS".  If that is Windows, Linux, etc., I cannot help you.  However, if you are using some version of Mac OS X and your system info merely needs updating, keep reading.
It has been several years since I tested msn messenger for Mac (MMM) , and I no longer use it.  However, one of the following ideas should get things working unless MMM is written to prohibit selection of alternate cameras.
    (1) Launch MMM and check its Help menu item.  If MMM's Help on your Mac does not answer your question, check MMM's web support: http://mac2.microsoft.com/help/office/14/en-us/messenger/
    (2) If nothing in Help or Support gets things sorted, you may be able to use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to force MMM to choose the webcam built into the new imac:
    • Connect and power on all devices. • Quit MMM if it is running. • Launch any app with a user-selectable camera "Preferences..."
menu command. (The "tip" suggests that you use iChat,
but others like Photo Booth, iMovie, etc., may work, too.) • Open "Preferences..." and set the camera "Preference" to use
the display iSight. • Now launch MMM. MMM should now use the iMac's inbuilt
iSight because your display camera is in use by the other
     application.

  • MSN Messenger ALWAYS asks me to download latest version

Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes. I'm using MSN Messenger but almost every time I Sign I get This:
"A newer version of MSN Messenger for Macintosh is available. You must download the newer version in order to continue using MSN Messenger. Would you like to do this now?"
I do. I use it. I log out. When I try to sign in again (after shutting down my Mac) I get the exact same message every time. Anybody know what's up with that?

You have landed in iSight Discussions.
MSN Messenger for Mac (now Microsoft Messenger for Mac is an old, text only app, so I know you are not using iSight with it.
I do not use Microsoft Messenger for Mac, and I do not know what "Sign" is, but here are my best suggestions assuming you are writing about MSN Messenger for Mac.
If you do not keep your Mac OS X maintenance up to date, do complete maintenance now. Then try again to see if you still have the problem.
Do you repair permissions before AND after you update Microsoft Messenger for Mac? Do so before and after your next update. Then try one more time to see if you still have the problem.
Finally, I see that you use Mac OS X (10.4.2) on your iMac. I suggest you apply the Mac OS X (10.4.5) Combo Updater using a technique like the one I describe in How I Update My Mac OS X. 10.4.5 resolves a number of issues with earlier version of Mac OS X. Perhaps it will correct your current problem, too.
Unless you get the help you need here, if your problem still exists, and if you do not have ANY other problems with your Mac, I would suspect it is a problem related specifically to Microsoft Messenger for Mac. You should seek help for your Microsoft software from its Help or Readme files. If you cannot find help for your symptoms there, try at Microsoft for Mac Support.
You can also Google for Discussion forum for Microsoft Messenger for Mac. Perhaps the users who post at some forums dedicated to Microsoft Messenger for Mac can give you ideas.

  • Internet/MSN Messenger Problems

Ok, so for the past few weeks I've been having some problems with my msn and the internet. I use my city's cable internet and I'm on an imac OS 10.4.6 800MHz PowerPC G4.
When I log onto the internet in any browser, it works just fine. But, when I log into MSN messenger, messegner tells me no one is online. I know that's not true because there is always someone online. Anyway, I log out of msn, but when I go back to use the internet, it doesn't work and I have to unplug my modem and plug it back in (reset it) to get the internet to work again.
I then decided to use my iBook laptop to use the internet. MSN worked just fine on my laptop and I had no problms until two days ago I had gotten a list of updates from mac. (I chose to get weekly updates in System Preferences). The updates were for iTunes, iPod, and a Mac OS X PowerPC update. I had done that at night, then when it was finished updating I shut the laptop down and went to bed. The next morning my laptop was giving me the same problems my imac was.
Then today my iMac wouldn't let me log onto the internet at all, when my laptop would. After I rebooted my computer it let me on.
The other strange thing is that when I tried to log in with my Apple ID to post here, it told me my ID was disabled because of security reasons, so I had to make a new ID.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on? Do I have some kind of virus maybe? I have no clue. Help!

After the upsdates did you run "Disk Utility" and "Repair Permissions" ?
do this preferably before and after a system update, it does fix a lot of these little problems and prevents potential hassles in the future.
Another excellent repair utility is "Applejack", go to Google and get the address and download the application (Donationware).
This program runs in Single User Mode and repairs a lot more than Disk Utility, afterwards you'll find your Mac running faster and with fewer problems.
    Good luck

  • Mac and msn messenger

I am a new maccer wondering how to video chat with my friends who are on msn messenger. Is it poss? i notice the newest mac messenger version does not support it. Is this right? Do i need to run Windows?

Cipha, unfortunately, MS hadn't seen fit to make MSM compatible with iChat, nor have then made the Mac version of MSM capable of video. Also unfortunately, the iSight isn't going to work under Windows. However, there are ways to have video chats with people on Windows (iChat and AIM 5.9 or Trillian -- but not Triton -- as well as others). You will be able to get more information and help if you go to the iChat forum at this link. HTH.

  • MSN Messenger through iChat?

Hi guys, am a new iMac user and I just wanted to know if there was a way to setup msn messenger, maybe as jabber, in iChat and how to do so.
The only reason to do this is to be able to use the great iSight with my friends who use msn messenger since msn messenger for mac doesnt have such an option for iSight.
Am currently using aMSN, which provides support for iSight but it doesnt allow sound, so i cant hear them and they cant hear me.
    Any suggestion?
    Thank you.

You may wish to also cross post in one of the iChat AV Forums where the iChat users hang out.

  • Using Voice and Vedio messaging on MSN Messenger

    hi,
how can i talk and have vedio conference with someone on MSN messenger from my MSN messenger on Powerbook ( possibly using built in mic )

    Hey
To cut a long story short, you can't. This has been a particular gripe now for some time, Microsoft have put off adding either voice or video to Messenger for Mac despite the PC version having had it for years. There are a number of options and work arounds available to achieve the same outcome however.
    1. If you want to stay with MSN, you can download a third party client called Mercury Messenger, best place to get it is www.versiotracker.com. This will give you acceptable video but, alas, no voice.
    2. To get sound, the best option at the moment is going to be a VOIP service such as skype, you could use that in addition to Mercury to give you both voice and video.
    3. The best option is definitely going to be iChat AV if you have a firewire cam (isight for example). It will give you voice and video, it just means trying to convince your friends to swith over to AOL Instant Messenger if they're using PCs. If you have a USB cam, this wont work without a piece of software called ichatUSBcam which you can get from the same site as above. It does cost money though, but you get a trial period to see if it works.
    4. If you can hold on a bit longer, there is another option coming up, Skype are working on adding video for Mac and that would give you an option similar to iChat but without requiring a firewire cam.
Hope that's of some help to you.
    Chris

  • Is it possible to use iSight with Messenger for Mac?

I have been racking my brain on how to get iSight to work with my friends on Window messenger. The video option is not available. I've had my macbook for 2 months now and, after working/giving up and going back again cannot seem to get it to jive. Any ideas would be appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, flowerlove
The answer here will depend on the specifics of what you want to do.
Both Microsoft Messenger for Mac and the older MSN Messenger for Mac are text only apps. You can not use iSight with either. Please let us know if you mean some different "Messenger" software.
This Windows Messenger does not appear to offer video, even for PCs. If this is the application your friends are using, no video work with it.
For a built-in iSight video connection with PC contacts who only connect via Windows Live Messenger or other clients of the MSN Messenger server, you can select from these alternatives:
    (1) Because your MacBook can use Boot Camp or Parallels to run Windows XP software on your MacBook, you can choose which method you want to use, add the required software (if you have not already done so), and then install and use the same Windows instant messenger application that your contacts are using to do video.
    (2) and (3) In addition to Niel's good "aMSN" suggestion, you can also try Mercury Messenger for Mac. Either can work with OS X for video and text chat. They offer the same features, but neither offers audio connections.  Use whichever one of these two you find more reliable or easiest to use if you do not want to add Windows XP to your iNtel Mac,.
