ISSUE: InDesign document automatically creating "imported" paragraph styles when you open the Layout.

Hi
I have an InDesign layout that contains multiple boxes, which all have style sheets applied to them.
There are a lot of unused styles on this layout too so these have been organised into folders.
When I close it and re-open the document, it creates all of the styles on the document again at the root level (not in the folder). However, it does not create them correctly, it simply makes them 14pt Times New Roman....
These styles look like they have been imported from Word (they have the little Floppy Disk icon next to their names). If you delete these and then save and re-open, they will be back there again.
However, if I remove them from their folders and place them at the root level, upon saving and re-opening, they won't be re-created (assumably because it can't due to a name conflict).
Any idea what would be causing it to want to create those styles every time?
The styles it has created:
Cheers
Rich

It's not actually linked to a word file.
I was just using that as a way of describing the link it seems to have.
Links panel only contains the link to the one image on the page

  • Automatically create Object, Character & Paragraphs style when you copy & paste the same item.

InDesign could create styles automatically. If I am copying and paste an object or paragraph - that means I will be using it in multiple pages and consequently be making changes to it. I know I can always create a syle for all my elements, but having that feature build-in would be great. Especially for the designers like me who works on small documents. Great Forum!
    Thanks!

InDesign make it really easy for you to create styles. I just believe that having it as an automatic feature (of course, an optional feature) would save time when working in small - mini publications, where there is really no need to create syles . Just my thought.

  • Importing Microsoft word documents that already have paragraph styles

Hello. I have been trying to figure out how to do this for months, this was taught to me many months ago but for some odd reason when I tried it myself it didn't work . I have my paragraph styles all set up in my indesign document. I have to import text that another person is giving me. The document that this person is giving me is a Microsoft word document. Someone showed me that you can customize the document in microsoft word, with styles for example: Selecting a part of text and customizing it (making it big and bold for example), then naming that style Heading, and then doing the same for lets say...a subheading. Well after you save the document (the microsoft word document), you are able to import the word document into your indesign file and it's supposed to override the styles from Microsoft Word and customize itself with your own paragraph or character styles that you already have in your indesign document, as long as the name of the styles are the same as the ones you had in microsoft word(which in this case would be heading and subheading). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Convert Word styles to InDesign styles
Here's the info you need. I found it in the InDesign Help section. I needed it, too. The "Show Import Options" is a little box in the lower left hand corner of the screen that comes up when you choose the file you want to place in InDesign. It's easy to miss.
While importing a Microsoft Word document into InDesign or InCopy, you can map each style used in Word to a corresponding style in InDesign or InCopy. By doing so, you specify which styles format the imported text. A disk icon appears next to each imported Word style until you edit the style in InDesign or InCopy.
    Do one of the following:
To add the Word document to existing text in InDesign or InCopy, choose File > Place. Select Show Import Options, and then double-click the Word document.
To open the Word document in a stand-alone InCopy document, start InCopy, choose File > Open, and then double-click the Word file.
Select Preserve Styles and Formatting From Text and Tables.
Select Customized Style Import, and then click Style Mapping.
In the Style Mapping dialog box, select the Word style, and then select an option from the menu under InDesign style. You can choose the following options:
If there is no style name conflict, choose New Paragraph Style, New Character Style, or choose an existing InDesign style.
If there is a style name conflict, choose Redefine InDesign Style to format the imported style text with the Word style. Choose an existing InDesign style to format the imported style text with the InDesign style. Choose Auto Rename to rename the Word style.
Click OK to close the Style Mapping dialog box, and then click OK to import the document.

  • How can you create a paragraph style that removes all spaces and forces everything to lower case?

    Hi,
Is there anyway of using GREP (or some other magical wizardry) to create a paragraph style that automatically removes all spaces and forces words into lower case?
Strange request i know....I'm wanting to use it for datamerged email addresses.
    Thanks

so doing it through InDesign is a work around I'm exploring.
Excel has the 'LOWER' function and the ability to record macros for a quick find/replace on the spaces - so that's definitely a good option if it can't be solved purely in InDesign.
You can change case via scripting in InDesign. This AppleScript (OSX only) will set the case of the selected paragraph style to lower. It would be possible to add some code that would strip spaces as well:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS6"
        activate
set StyleList to name of every paragraph style of active document
        set myDialog to make dialog with properties {name:"Document Paragraph Styles"}
        tell myDialog
            tell (make dialog column)
                tell (make border panel)
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        make static text with properties {static label:"Choose a Style", min width:150}
                    end tell
                    tell (make dialog column)
                        set myPresetsDropdown to make dropdown with properties {string list:StyleList, selected index:0, min width:150}
                    end tell
                end tell
            end tell
        end tell
        set myResult to show myDialog
        if myResult = true then
--+1 gets the correct name because list starts at 0
set myStyle to item ((selected index of myPresetsDropdown) + 1) of StyleList
        else
            return
        end if
        destroy myDialog
        tell active document
set myStyle to paragraph style myStyle
repeat with j from 1 to (count stories)
repeat with i from 1 to (count paragraphs in story j)
if applied paragraph style of paragraph i of story j is myStyle then
--defines a variable to replace the generic this_text parameter in the handler
set SCText to the contents of paragraph i of story j
set contents of paragraph i of story j to my change_case_of(SCText)
                    end if
                end repeat
            end repeat
        end tell
    end tell
    on change_case_of(this_text)
        set the_comparison_string to "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
        set the_source_string to "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz"
        set the_new_text to ""
        repeat with thisChar in this_text
set x to the offset of thisChar in the_comparison_string
if x is not 0 then
                set the_new_text to (the_new_text & character x of the_source_string) as string
            else
set the_new_text to (the_new_text & thisChar) as string
            end if
        end repeat
        return the_new_text
    end change_case_of

  • In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph?

In Pages (5.5.1) can I create multiple Paragraph Styles within one paragraph.
I need to make a table of contents for my Mater's Thesis and want to use the automatic table of contents feature.  I want the first sentence of a paragraph to have a different paragraph setting than the rest of the paragraph.  Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Nice of you to be doing this for your Mother's Thesis.
    There are several issues here:
    1. A Paragraph Style is what it says, the style for the paragraph
    2. You can format text within a paragraph by applying a Character Style
    3. Pages 5.5.1 lets you apply formatting to overall text for the T.O.C. but not parts of it and you can not retain that formatting as a Paragraph style
So in answer to your question, no.
You will need to create the T.O.C. manually and unfortunately as Pages 5.5.1 can't create bookmarks (just one of over 100 missing features) you will be unable to link the T.O.C. to the referred pages in the list.

  • Problem:  Photoshop CS6 applies two paragraph styles when one is selected

    Hi everyone,
When I change the heading title within my text box, I select the heading and then select the appropriate style.  Instead of just changing the heading, the body text changes as well.  Is there a setting that's causing this to happen?
Thanks so much for your help!

First Bug: Simply having a layer selected (even a text layer) and then clicking the "Create New Paragraph Style" will create a generic style (with default settings). You have to tell Photoshop what settings it is that you want to create a style with. Simply double-click the text layer icon (not the layer name or the blank area around it) and this will open the text layer for editing and select the text. Now when you click the "Create New Paragraph Style" button, the settings of the selected text will be made into a style. This is how they are performing the step in the video as well, but from your description it sounds like you are skipping a step. And remember, there are two different ways of creating text: single click the Text tool to create line (character) text, click and drag a text box to create paragraph text. That is why we have both Character Styles and Paragraph Styles.
Second Bug: The Paragraph Style is applying with your text transformations calculated. So, if you create a text style that uses a 24 pt font, then you create text and transform it so that it 200% larger, when you apply the style you will end up with a font that is at 48 pts. A 50% transformation will result in a 12 pt font, etc.
Third Bug: Not sure why that is happening to you. My Mac uses half as much RAM and doesn't run into that problem. My guess is it would have to do with the fonts you have installed on the system. Do you still see this behavior if you disable all the fonts on your system (through Font Book or your favored font managment utility)? Your suggestion that it may have something to do with Fonnnnt Shop or WebInk may be true to. Just because they aren't open currently doesn't mean they haven't modified Photoshop and the way it runs.

    Are you using iBooks Author?
If so you can choose a blank template.
iBooks Author > File > New from Template Chooser... > use the Blank template.

You can't change the way Pages import .doc files.
It was never written that it reproduce exactly the original one.
From my point of view, as I refuse to give a cent to M...soft, the best way to deal with documents issued by their Office suite is to use the free libreOffice.

  • Is there a way to open the last file I used in InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop when I open the app

I want to create a shortcut (Win7) that will automatically open the last file I used in the above apps when I open the app. Is there a command line switch like /r or /l that does that?

Thanks, your point is well taken... It would be nice, though, to have the ability to sort a "Last Used" column in iTunes and select a bunch of apps to remove in one shot.

  • A picture that was saved in a word document is not showing when I open the document in Pages. Is there a way to recover the image, or a specific type of file that Pages only recognizes?

My professor posted the course syllabus online and at the time, I was using OpenOffice. Whenever I opened the document the image would show perfectly fine, but I switched over to Pages because it had a template I know one of my professors wants a project to be done in. When I opened the same document in Pages to see if it would look the same, the error box popped up and said the image could not be imported and there was a blank box where the picture should have been. My question is, is there any way that I could somehow get the image to show or was it saved in a format that Pages doesn't recognize?

Open the document with Open Office. Select and Copy the image. Paste it into Pages.
    If that doesn't work,
Open the document with Open Office. Select and Copy the image. Launch Preview. Press command-N (New document from Clipboard). Save the Preview file as a PDF or JPEG, as appropriate. Insert that in Pages.

You should be able to select Force Quit from the menu beneath the Apple icon in Finder
and choose to Quit iPhoto from there, without messing up the Mac OS X in the process.
    OS X - Support
Not sure if rebuilding the iPhoto library would help this issue. However if you had to
turn off the computer without the correct method (unplug, etc; instead of menu choice)
the system may have accrued damages and should be checked, maybe repaired by
use of the Disk Utility in the system. Or restart the computer in Safe Boot mode, then
run 'repair disk permissions' while it is running in that reduced mode; then restart after.
