Issues with FIOS modem/router's wireless and multiple devices connected to the WLAN?

I am an IT consultant who was assisting someone with getting some devices connected to the fios wireless router and adding a wireless print server so they could print wirelesly.
I was having difficulty with one of their systems that was connected prior to me going on site.
It was having difficulty obtaining an IP from the WLAN, i tried reinstalling the adapter, removing stored wlan settings and setting it up again, etc.
When it did obtain an IP it could not ping the router.
I had left it suggesting that they replace the wireless adapter on that system.
However they're saying that after they shut down one of their other devices that i had connected (a netbook), that this problematic system started working fine.
It makes no sense that a wireless client would have an impact on another wireless client. We're only talking 4 total devices here, a netbook, a laptop, a wireless print server and a desktop in another area of the house that has a usb wireless adapter.
Does anyone have any ideas on if Verizon's wireless built in to the fios modem/router just isn't too good to handle multiple wireless devices?
After hearing this i was thinking they might have been better off configuring the fios router as a bridge and getting a better wireless router or shutting off the fios supplied wifi and implementing a wireless access point instead of using the router/modem that verizon provides.

By bridge I mean in the sense you see some of the early DSL setups configured before they started using multiport routers -- essentially bridging the WAN MoCA port to the LAN ethernet.   The ActionTEC's won't do that.   This is what I think most are seeking to do when they want to turn the device into a "bridge" (essentially making the Verizon unit "transparent" to the communication which in this scenario it can't be).  You can do as suggested an turn the ActionTEC into essentially a "switch/bridge" that is only bridging the MoCA LAN and Ethernet LAN segments, but this then requires you to have an ethernet WAN feed from the ONT ... and as indicated, it is definitely not a "supported" configuration from Verizon (although there is nothing "wrong" with doing it this way if you are comfortable with networking and understanding the mechanics of all that is going on -- if not, sticking with a supported configuration is highly advisable).

For the Internet, you should set up a router on your modem, this router will route the packets to any device on the local area network.
If you use the iMac as a router, like if you connect the Ethernet cable from your modem to the iMac, then broadcast a Wifi signal, the iMac will have to remain on all the time, at full power. Thus drastically shortening it's lifespand.
A router is only about $100 or so, offers much better security as it's like a large guard, someone has to hack through router first to get your iMac or other devices.
If it breaks, you buy another 5 years later for another $100, so your not placing all that always on wear and tear on your expensive iMac.
Apple's airport routers are pretty good, easy to set up and have automatic firmware updates, plus music sharing etc.
Set up properly you will be very secure

  • My iPad works everywhere but I have issues with Fios supplied router.

I have the dropping signal and having to resign in problem. I do not have any problems at my work Verizon DSL supplied router.
I even took it to a friend's house who has Fios, same dropping problem occured on his Fios router.
Might it be a security feature? When the iPad shuts down the router cuts the signal?

From what I've seen, the ipad is working well with DSL (mostly). The problem lies mostly with the newer technology like FIOS.
The iPad has nothing to do with either DSL or FIOS. Those are broadband technologies that connect your house to the Internet. Where people are having trouble is with connecting the DSL/FIOS device to the iPad via WiFi. With either DSL or FIOS, it is trivially easy to swap out the WiFi part with another brand if router.
So how do people conclude that it's the iPad? Because everything else seems to be working fine!
Unfortunately, that is a logically fallacy. Clearly the iPad doesn't work well with a number of routers. No one disputes that. The dispute is over how large that problem set really is and, more importantly, if there is anything in the world that Apple can do about it. No one outside Apple has any idea of the answers to those two questions. To suggest that Apple doesn't care is just ridiculous. I have no doubt at all that Apple is doing everything economically and technically possible to improve the situation. However, there just might be nothing they can do.
Other peoples don't and they're trying to find the exact problem which IS the iPad.
How can you be "trying to find" the problem when you already "know" the answer?
Take off your apple love shades and look at it from a realistic point of view.
I complain about Apple on a regular basis in the developer forums where I mostly hang out. Even there, when I complain, it is in the context of trying to help people figure out some problem with Apple technologies. I am just as harsh there with anyone who uses poor logic and winds up blaming Apple unjustly. If you have facts and logic, I am more than happy to reproduce the problem, report it to Apple, and look for a usable workaround. I see no point whatsoever in using poor logic to jump to a conclusion and join the cacophony of rants to call on Apple to "make a statement" or something similarly silly.
Well gee, they haven't public ally announced anything. YOU don't know how big this problem is either so atop acting like it's nothing. People on here are really frustrated that they jut spent 500$+ for an item that NEEDS Internet. It's like if It was a problem with screen brightness, okay whatever. If it was a problem with a small glitch then okay. This is a problem with wifi. If it doesn't work properly, the item is completely useless. I don't geet how you can see this not as an iPad problem when there are so many devices in the world that use wifi just fine. I've never heard of having to buy a new router to use an item. Apple sure as **** didn't advertise it like that either. Truth it they screwed up and they're handling it quite ******. If there really isn't anything in the world that apple can do about it then everyone should be refunded their money, this product wAs never advertised or marketed to work with some routers. It was a device created to work on the go anywhere and everywhere. And congratulations it has been working for you but ithasnt for everyone. I finally got my problem fixed at home by reading this helpful online forum. The fios thread single handledly fixed my issue at home. The reason I'm so mad is because apple hasn't released anything to the public that helped fixed anything. If this online support forum with just regular tech guys can find a solution, why the he'll can't they. And if someone has a problem and they dot know about these forums, they go to the apple store. And the apple store BLINDLY tests just on their own network (similar to how you bashed Princeton for not testing outside of their network) and they conclude that it's the routers problem, ****** rediculous

  • My lap top wont import pictures from auto play. it keeps saying there is a file error and a device connected to the computer isnt working properly. i have tried going into the internal storage to copy and paste the pictures but this wont work either.

my pictures from my i phone 4s wont import from auto play. a message keeps coming up saying there is an error and a device is not working properly. also i have tried going into the internal storage to copy and paste them but that wont work either. the page either stops responding or the picture simply dont copy. does any1 have any idea why this is happening. it has never happened before and only seems to be happening since i started using i cloud storage instead of synching my phone with the lap top.

I have decided to dedicate this thread to the wonderful errors of Lion OSX. Each time I find a huge problem with Lion I will make note of it here.
Today I discovered a new treasure of doggie poop in Lion. No Save As......
I repeat. No Save As. In text editor I couldn't save the file with a new extension. I finally accomplished this oh so majorly difficult task (because we all know how difficult it should be to save a file with a new extension) by pressing duplicate and then saving a copy of the file with a new extension. Yet then I had to delete the first copy and send it to trash. And of course then I have to secure empty trash because if I have to do this the rest of my mac's life I will be taking up a quarter of percentage of space with duplicate files. So this is the real reason they got rid of Save As: so that it would garble up some extra GB on the ole hard disk.
So about 20 minutes of my time were wasted while doing my homework and studying for an exam because I had to look up "how to save a file with a new extension in  mac Lion" and then wasted time sitting here and ranting on this forum until someone over at Apple wakes up from their OSX-coma.
are you freaking kidding me Apple? I mean REALLY?!!!! who the heck designed this?!!! I want to know. I want his or her name and I want to sit down with them and have a long chat. and then I'd probably splash cold water on their face to wake them up.
I am starting to believe that Apple is Satan.

  • Configuring Hardware VPN with Verizon modem/router

    Hi-
I'm a Northern VA FIOS subscriber. Verizon provided the following:
    Modem: Zyxel Prestige 861
    Wireless Router: Actiontec MI424WR
This setup has been working fine.
My job recently gave me a hardware VPN: Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall, Model FVS338
I'm having a bit of difficulty setting it up the way I'd like.
    1) In general, should I connect the HW VPN directly into a free port of the Modem (parallel with the router), or should I connect it into the Router? (Does Verizon support multiple devices connected to the Modem, or do they expect us to connect everything via the router?)
    2) I tried a number of different configurations, and the only way I was able to get the hardware VPN to function was to disconnect the router, connect the VPN box in its place, and configure the VPN box to mimic/use the MAC address of the router. This provided connectivity to the work network, but is not acceptable because I need the wireless home network provided by the router as well.
Does anyone have any recommendations for how to set this up properly?
    Many thanks.
    -Steven
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    From actiontec.com
Can I use the Actiontec Gateway or Router to connect to my employers VPN so that I can work from home?
Yes, the Actiontec Routers and Gateways support connecting to VPN servers. By default, Actiontec Routers and Gateways allow Client VPN traffic to pass-through. (the Actiontec will allow a connected PC to "pass-through" and connect to a remote VPN server).
NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, Actiontec Routers and Gateways do not function as VPN endpoints. They cannot make a VPN connection directly to a VPN server, router or client. The reverse is also true, VPN routers, servers and clients cannot make a VPN connection directly to the Actiontec Router itself. (Some of the proprietary VPN applications require specific ports be opened in the Actiontec, for a successful connection. Not all VPNs use the same ports, so determine the ports used by your VPN software before attempting to forward the ports.)
did you set up the pptp port forwarding rules ?  you should have l2tp (1701) protocol and pptp (1723) port forwarding protocol for port forwarding.
the preconfigured vpn rules should be fine.

  • Trouble using Airport Express Base Station with DSL modem, Router and Hub

About 18 months ago, I had an Airport (802.11b) with WAN & LAN ports and modem hooked up to support two laptops, a Titanium Powerbook G4/600 and G3/400. The setup went from DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to Airport -> Hub (which had desktop and ethernet laser printer plugged in). The network worked fine.
Then, I got a G4 iBook to replace G3/400. Wanted to get 802.11g to support “g” Airport card in iBook. Got a Linksys 802.11g Wi-Fi with 4-port router for $50. Hooked it up directly with DSL modem. (Couldn’t get it to send out to hub). Hooked the desktop and ethernet laser printer into Linksys Wi-Fi/router. The only way I could use the printer was by having it be a shared printer from the desktop. This was often problematic.
Two months ago, I got a refurbished Airport Extreme Base Station. I can’t get the AEBS to interface directly with the DSL modem, so I hooked it up as follows:
DSL modem -> Linksys router -> to AEBS -> Hub. I plugged my Epson 820 (USB) into the AEBS and can see it to print to.
I have a static IP. That info is entered into Linksys router. Router set as Gateway, with DHCP enabled. AEBS is set to Connect using Ethernet, Configure using DHCP. Network setting: Distribute IP Addresses is unchecked.
    Here’s my issue:
I can’t see the ethernet laser printer. It will occasionally flash available, but is gone in less than a minute. The printer is HP 2100 series.
Sometimes I can connect to the desktop G4 tower; most times I can’t.
I have checked and double-checked the cables.
Both the printer and desktop are connected to the Hub.
What can I do so that I can see the HP 2100 series printer and the G4 tower?

    Don,
Thanks for the suggestions. Glutton for punishment that I am, I tried this again, “just for grins.“ The six other times I tried this, I couldn’t get the AEBS to “see” the Internet. And lo, this time it worked. Here’s the setup now:
DSL modem -> AEBS -> 4-port hub (which is connected to G4 tower and HP 2100 Ethernet printer). My USB Epson is connected to the AEBS, and I can print from the laptops. AEBS is set up: manual IP info, Network: distribute IP address; share a single IP using DHCP.
When I still couldn’t see the desktop G4 and the Ethernet HP 2100 connected via the hub (not), I got a flash. I had swapped out the cable a number of times to no avail. Then I realized, the hub is old and all the cables I was using are the new CAT5s. I dug out an old four-wire with RJ45 connectors that my husband made years ago (probably a cross-over cable). It was quite an effort as the cable is 30 ft. long and wrapped around the perimeter of the office behind desks and file cabinets, entwined with all the other wires. But I plugged it in and, Shazam! I am WORKING!
And, Don, thanks to you, I have eliminated the router from my gaggle of electronic boxes.

  • New Fios G1100 and Multiple Xboxs Connected to xbox live issues.

I just upgraded my router from the Actiontec MI424WR to the G1100. Now I am into an issue with Fios keeping a connection to xbox live on selected xbox devices. I have 3 xbox 360 and 2 xbox one connecting to the network. Both Xbox One maintain solid connection to live, but the 360 experience I have a totally different experience. My set up has 1 Xbox One Wired, 1 wireless. I have 2 xbox 360 wireless and 1 wired. I am also experiencing problems with one of my desktops which is wired that randomly loses a connection to internet. I been using this TRENDnet 8-Port 10/100Mbps GREENnet Switch (TE100-S80G) to help with wired connections. Both Xbox Ones on the network remain connected at all times, or at least I haven't seen a drop. My experience with my xbox 360s are completely different from my Xbox One.They all drop connection randomly every 5 to 20 min. I can immediately sign back in , but this continuosly happens. I was able to get one xbox 360 to maintain a continuous connection by putting it IP address and enabling DMZ on it. I have tried port forwarding but that doesn't work. Anybody have any suggestions or solution? Or should I just shipped back the G1100 and go back to Actiontec MI424WR.

    2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
3)Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...
    4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
    IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...

  • Does it work with Sky modem/router?

    Hi folks,
does the airport express base station work with Sky broadband?
I want to connect the base station to my router via ethernet cable (in 2 different rooms) and use it to extend my wireless range, and print wirelessly.
Anybody done this with the standard issue sky modem/router?
    Cheers

    Hi
The 'standard issue' modem/router as provided by Sky used to be the NetGear DG834G IIRC? If it still is this model then yes it works. IMO it's best to attach the AE and use it in Bridge Mode. Depends on what you want to achieve though.

  • LaPastenague can you help? TC is refusing to work with existing modem/router

My home office network setup is driving me mad!  I've identified the issue - my TC is competing with my modem/router.  What I haven't been able to do is fix the problem.  I've tried setting it up as a bridge, tried turning off wireless and nothing has worked.  Are you able to help before I throw an almighty tantrum?
    Here's my set up:
    * Primary computer is a MacBook Air which is on wireless 24/7
    * Secondary computer is a MacBook Pro, also operating on wireless
    * Time capsule is used as a server of sorts, to store all our files which are then accessed via the laptops.  It's only a few months old.
    * Router is also new (yes, someone sold us incompatible devices).  It's a Netgear D6200.
    * We've set up both a 5G and a 2.4G wireless network, but operate on 5G 99% of the time
    * There are 2 x Airport Express in the house - one connected to the printer, one connected to the surround sound system
    * There are also 2 x Apple TVs and 1 x iPhone connected to the network
Are you able to help me figure out the best setup?  I know it's possible - I just can't figure out how to do it

I presume the modems you've suggested are all compatible with my apple devices?  I read somewhere amidst your recommendations that apple doesn't play nicely with non-apple modem/routers.
Depends on brands.. Netgear is near the bottom.. overall TP-Link is pretty good.. they are certainly aware of the need to test against Apple products and special protocols, and tweak here and there to get better results.
It is important to understand though.. what I want you to do is basically turn the modem router into a dumb modem.. it will have no part in the network other than translation of ethernet packets to ATM phone networking packets. All the routing will be handled by the Apple router.
Yes, the Netgear is a wifi/DSL modem & router.  I'm using wireless on the Netgear.  I didn't turn wireless off on this device as I assumed I should be relying on that as my router given it was recommended instore.  I'll give that a go now.
    Shakes head::
Never ever believe what the salesman in the store tells you. He always has one at home that works perfectly with every piece of equipment you happen to have. And it fixes warts and herpes.. and most everything.. the bottle says snake oil. Apply liberally to dumb customers.
The reason I suggest a very cheap modem.. is that it will do nothing .. except translate packets. Ethernet to ATM.. ATM to Ethernet.. completely dumb.. You can bridge the Netgear but that seems a horrible waste.. I would prefer you to return it to the store for refund.. or at worst sell it off..
Even if you need to use it as a router.. which we are still getting to.. there is no need to use its wireless.
Anyway keep in touch with how it goes.

  • Set up with fios mi424wr router bridge

can I set up the new TC with a FiOS MI424WR Rev. F router.  I'd like to use the TC as my rouer and have the FiOS modem/router set up as a bridge (I have TV service and phone service, and the modem is connected with coax cable).

In my case I have the TC right next to the Verizon FiOs modem/router. So, I turned off the Verizon wireless so as not to create interference. As for the configuration, I set the TC to bridged not because I'm savy with these things but because the AirPort Utility on my iPhone told me to.
@LaPastenague, I'm confused about your suggestion the guest wireless doesn't work in bridge mode, mine does.
If you are able to run an ethernet cable from your Verizon FiOs modem/router to another part of your house, that will allow you to set up your TC a distance away to give you better wifi coverage in your house. Stone walls prevent me from doing this. If I need better coverage, I will buy the $99 AirPort Express and set it up in bridge mode working wirelessly from the TC.
    I hope this helps.

I have a spare Westell 327W wired/wireless DSL modem/router. I need a wireless access point for a G4 Power Mac away from an Apple Extreme. I knew how to make the Westell 327W in a bridge mode. Is there a way to make 327W communicate wirelessly with a FIOs modem/router?
    Thank you very much.

Hmmm, perhaps something like this with a USB extension cord would be a solution, they have better Range even without an extension than Airport cards ime...

Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet. The 2wire will keep resetting. When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.

  • Communicating with Actiontec modem/router

I have an Actiontec MI424WR Rev. F, working fine and serving a few devices.
One of them is a linksys E1200 router
    Looking at:
advanced > IP Address Distribution > Connection List  > DHCP Connections
I can see all devices except the Linksys E1200 router.
Embarrassing - but I know why I don't see it.
I (by mistake) 'clicked' the 'Remove' button just after making it 'static'.
The Linksys E1200 router is functioning. It is 'known' and recognized by Actiontec
as evident from: Main > My Network (as "192.168.1.7" )
And: My Network > Network Status
I was trying to 'clean' the setup and to this end,
I'm seeking expertise in communicating with this Actiontec modem/router,
so I can 'ask' it to redisplay the E1200.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Did you assign the Linksys a static IP address in the Linksys WAN interface?
If so, it won't appear in the DHCP connection list, but will appear on the main status page and the network status page.
If you didn't assign the Linksys a static IP address in its WAN interface and it is getting its WAN IP address via DHCP, then it should reappear in the DHCP connection list the next time it renews its DHCP lease with the Actiontec, which could be as long as 12 hours since the Actiontec's LAN DHCP lease interval is 24 hours.   You can force the Linksys to request a new DHCP lease by rebooting the Linksys.
BTW, the Actiontec is a MOCA capable router.  It is not a modem.

  • Solution: iPad/iPhone Login issues with IIS as Reverse Proxy (Android and Windows Phone works)

    Hi,
I had issues with iPad/iPhone access from external and tried a lot. Now I found my solution I like to share.
I setup a IIS on Windows Server 2012 with ARR 2.5 and Android and Windows Phone could login but not iPad and iPhone.
The IIS Log on the reverse proxy showed:
