It ok to compress backup files?

Hello All,
OS: AIX 5.2
We are creating Oracle backup files on daily basis.
We transfer the files to backup server.
No we have been asked to compress files into one file.
My question is it ok to compress backup files?
Please note: I created a folder called backup.pax (include all seven files)
Now I will compress this folder as
compress backup.pax.
Is it fine to do that?
I am worry about recovery situation. (in case)
DN

    Hi,
    you did not backup anything at all.
    -k only
    just calculates the compression ratio, so that brbackup is able to calculate the required tape swaps.
    So with "compress_only" no real backup had been done!
    Sorry, you'll have to redo that with "-k yes" and write to a device (-d tape)

  • How do I make a new backup file of my current library?

    I just finished locating all my music in my C drive (manually & individually!) since 7.7 wiped out my library and I would like to make a completely new backup file location of this library so that all my music is in one location (just in case, for next time). For some reason my music was in like 3 different iTunes music files and it was quite a nightmare switching back and forth.
    Is there an easy way to do this? And can I set up iTunes to now automatically backup new music to this new location?
    Thanks

    Nothing automatic within iTunes.
    I use a backup program to copy entire itunes folder to another drive. No compression, archiving, or renaming; just a straight copy. Granted, this uses up twice as much space but I feel safer than about being able to get accidentally deleted files back.

    Hi;
    Our backup policy should have 7 days; however we have here some files from JAN, FEB,MAR, APR /2012 WHICH ARE BEYOND THE RETENTION DATE and these files should be deleted by executing " delete noprompt obsolete; ".
    All files are exist in /u15/rman/

  • Backup file too small?

    I did a complete new backup onto a 1Tb TC I had previously used for backup (but deleted the old bakcup file). I have 214 GB on my HD, and TM said it was backing up about 214 GB, but it stopped at about 175 GB and said it was done! No further incremental backups add much of anything. I can't identify any particularly large folders or files that it missed, but I can't compare everything. a 35 GB difference is pretty big. Any thoughts about whether I should worry that the HD is not completely backed up, or how to remedy this?
    I did have previous problems with a "read only" TC, and then "backup file too large..." (the latter which I solved by trashing the TM .plist preferences file right before I did this big backup.)
    Macolyte

    Olaf is right it must be compressed backup:
    To check if the backup file is compressed or not
    RESTORE HEADERONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file';
    Looks for column labelled "Compressed". 1 = compressed, 0 = not compressed.
    If you are skeptical about backup file you can verfiy whether a SQL database backup can be read and restored:
    RESTORE VERIFYONLY FROM DISK = 'Path to backup file'
    If the backup is valid, the SQL Server Database Engine returns:
    The backup set on file 1 is valid

  • How to check wether we are using Compressed backup option or not in 11gR1?

    Actually I'm trying save some space in FRA? Any Ideas will be really welcome.
    One option I can think of is Compressed backup sets
    I don't see anyhting like 'Compress' in my scripts below....Also in 'Backup Settings' under 'Availability' Tab in Grid
    I see 'Backup Set' selected and not 'Compressed Backup set'.
    Is there anywhere else I can check wether I'm taking compressed backups or not?

    hi,
    also you may define default behaviour of backing up:
    RMAN> CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO COMPRESSED BACKUPSET;
    Turn on this great feature:
    SQL> alter database enable block change tracking using file '/u01/oradata/ora1/change_tracking.f';
    and use incremental backups.

    Regards, Anirban

    After your RESTORE the (standby) controlfile, you must MOUNT the database instance with "ALTER DATABASE MOUNT".
    You can also then query the controlfile with a "LIST BACKUP" or "LIST BACKUP SUMMARY" in RMAN to see if the deseired backups have been cataloged in the controlfile.
    Don't specify the format for the ALLOCATE CHANNEL when you RESTORE DATABASE. In fact, you don't need to ALLOCATE CHANNEL at all when the device type is the default value of DISK if your are on 10gR2 or above.

    Well Thanks for your reply.....my oracle version is 11.2.0.3.b and if we have the compression option can you please elaborate how to do that......
    It's in the documentation.  See Data Pump Export
    let us say my expdp file is abc.dmp...should I give the command gzip abc.dmp or any different.
    Let me google that for you
    One more question what does teh customer mean by production data dump to the following path \\138.90.17.56\OMNISAFE. please explain
    How do we know what the customer means?  Why don't you ask him?
    That said, it looks like a url to an ip address and a defined folder at that ip address.  Again, if the customer wants you to send them a file, you need to be working with said customer on the mechanics of accessing their system.
    All that said ....
    Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career.  To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
    Go to tahiti.oracle.com.
    Locate the link for your Oracle product and version, and click on it.
    You are now at the entire documentation set for your selected Oracle product and version.
    BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION
    Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab (for 10.x) or the "Master Book List" link (for 11.x) you will find the complete documentation library.
    Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what kind  of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
    Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what kind of information is available there.
    Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
    Do the same with the Utilities manual.
    You don't have to read the above in depth.  They are reference manuals.  Just get familiar with what is there to be referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
    Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
    - *Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual*.
    - Take a look in your alert log.  One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
    - Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
    - *When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again*.

  • On loading backup file to new computer, I keep getting an error message.

    I have been trying to move my bookmarks to a new computer using the backup file which I prepared and stored on my external hard drive, but I keep getting an error message.

    What error message do you get?
    Can you attach a screenshot?
    *http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenshot
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/how-do-i-create-screenshot-my-problem
    *Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot
    *Make sure that you do not exceed the maximum size of 1 MB
    Make sure that the bookmarks backup file has the correct (lowercase) file extension:
    * .html for a HTML backup (needs to be imported and merges bookmarks)
    * .json for a JSON backup (needs to be restored and replaces bookmarks)
    You can check the file type via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.
    If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "Firefox > New Tab > Open File" or "File > Open File".
    A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup shows as a web page with clickable links.
    A JSON backup starts with: <b><nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded":</nowiki></b>
    An HTML backup starts with: <b><nowiki><!DOCTYPE NETSCAPE-Bookmark-file-1></nowiki></b>
    Verify the file type in the Properties via the right-click context menu to make sure that the change has been successful.
    Windows hides some file extensions by default.
    Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension.
    You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

  • Find DBID in compressed backup

    Hi all,
    Is there anyway to find dbid from a compressed backup ? autobackup is turned OFF.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi SRP,
    thank you for your prompt reply.
    Actually im just doing some testing here.
    I have backed up all my datafile, controlfile, spfile and archivelog and controlfile using compress method. autobackup is set to OFF. Then i have deleted all the physical files. including databafile, control, redo spfile.. all.... only have the binaries here. Currently using RMAN i am able to use a dummy i am able to nomount. Since the backupset is compressed i am unable to use any of the method to retrieve the DBID.

  • Slow Restore of a Compressed Backup

    All,
    I am seeing a strange behavior when restoring a compressed backup for standby duplication.
    The target and auzillary database version is 11.1.0.6 Enterprise Edition
    The size of the database uncompressed is 131.41G
    The Size of the compressed Full Backup is 58.21G
    The Duplication script is as follows:
    run {
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 1 TO '+DGROUPDATA1';
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 10 TO '+DGROUPDATA1';
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 100 TO '+DGROUPS1V1';
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 101 TO '+DGROUPS1V1';
    SET NEWNAME FOR DATAFILE 102 TO '+DGROUPS1V1';
    DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE FOR STANDBY
    NOFILENAMECHECK;
    From the alert log on the standby during the recovery process I see that a 4GB file recovery takes a little more than an hour:
    Full restore complete of datafile 66 to datafile copy +DGROUPRPRTRDATA1/mpstndby/datafile/reporter_data1.269.676544573.  Elapsed time: 1:03:45
    Is there anyway to speed up the recovery process from a compressed backup?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    It would seem that i have plenty of resources, but i think that i may have a bigger issue.
    I am using defaults for filesperset and using just one channel.
    The restore process is also failing to execute the final step of the duplication.
    contents of Memory Script:
    switch clone datafile all;
    executing Memory Script
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
    RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
    RMAN> **end-of-file**
    RMAN>
    so now not only do i have a slow restore but i have a restore that hasnt switched the files. So the database is in a very angry and confused state becasue it obviously doesnt know what the new names of the files are.
    Thanks for your help to date

  • Old compressed archived files

    I have these compressed archived files downloaded in 2001 on OS 9 and now I can't access them on OS X.  The extensions of these files get changed to .img and I can't even see exactly what format they were in originally.  When I double click on them I get a warning that says 'The following disk images couldn't be opened. Reason: not recognized'
    Is there anyway for me to see them in the original extension? Thanks!

    You should be able to open .img files.  At least I can on my 10.6.5 system.
    Just to prove it I mounted my old backup of OS9 which had a bunch of .img files.  I chose some at random and had no problem expaning and mounting them exactly like .dmg's.  The app to open these files are, like .dmg's, DiskImageMounter in /Library/Coreservices.  So is that what you have as the default app for opening .img files?  If not do a Finder get info on one of the .dmg's and chane (all) that file to Open with DiskImageMounter in /Library/CoreServices.
    Some of them I can but very few.. DiskImageMounter is the default app when I tried to open them yes. Thanks!
