ITouch cannot be updated because it was disconnected, also some extraordinarily long backup problems.
I have a 4th gen ipod touch and i've been having this problem for a while. I'm on 4.3.3 and I don't jailbreak, I buy all my apps etc, but whenever I sync, it won't properly do it. It will start the sync by backing up. Now, I don't actually have a single back up meaning this is technically my 'first' backup. I know that 'first' backups are supposed to take longer, but it either a) takes over 3 hours (i've left it on for this long then gave up) or b) will go through and just before completing, say that the ipod was disconnected and thus was unable to backup. Occasionally, it will go through with the backup when i right click on my iPod in iTunes and select 'back up' but when I go to check everything, including my preferences > devices > backups, nothing has changed. I don't have a single backup on that list, its white and bare.
I don't have a single backup because although I managed to get this iPod fine, new from the apple store and backup for the first time then, after a while it stopped properly syncing, aka this problem. I was then recommended by some random site that I can't recall to delete backups and backup for the 'first' time again. I've also tried clearing some apps to see if that was the problem, as well as emptying some of my photos, but although i've not cleared all the apps nor all the photos, it doesn't seem to make a difference.
When I try to update to 4.3.5, it will extract information, proceed to Back up (step 1 of 5) and somewhere in the backing up process my iPod Touch will reboot and the apple logo plus a loading logo (the white lines arranged in a circular motion, when things are 'loading') ontop will appear. From then on, regularily will my iPod Touch beep with a high pitched noise that I can't put my finger on, but is familiar, until the backup ultimately fails with the message "iTunes could not back up the iPod because it was disconnected."
I've tried different USB ports, I do NOT use a hub. It also does not sync songs as when I try to put more songs on my iPod, it requires to back up. I've also tried clicking the (x) to stop the backup but clicking it doesn't even do anything.
I've wanted to try to restore, but apparently I can't even do that because it TOO requires to back up right after restoration, it will fail the backup and revert my iPod to what it was before.
Please tell me that this is a problem I can fix easily, it's a fairly new iPod Touch.

Ipod cannot be updated because all of playlists for syncing no longer exist
I think i delted the playlist for my ipod and now i get this message and my ipod wont update and i have no clue what to do
This problem arises when you use 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' to sync your iPod and then delete the playlist it has been updating from. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If you haven't deliberately chosen this method, adding a smaller iPod to a larger library for the first time causes iTunes by default to make a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod Selection". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in the source list. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs

"The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Updates were only offered by Apple when I'd open iTunes. Now I can't open iTunes. How can I access the newest iTunes as an update, not a new program?
this just started w/ me yesterday. I was running 10.5.3, and nothing changed - the message just appeard out of nowhere. I update to the latest iTunes 10.6 but the message is the same.
Sounds like probably some sort of Library file corruption.
The two options available in the message box are "Download" and "Quit". Download is useless because I'm already running the latest. Quit is pretty useless.
I was going to just create a new Library and re-import all my music. Of course, all my iPhone sync settings are going go have to be recreated. -
I updated my itunes to 11 and found out my phone and ipod were not compatible. I uninstalled it and reinstalled 10.7 but now I get an error message when I try to open itunes saying "the file cannot be read because it was created by a newer verison" What do I do?
Thank you for clarify I'm supposed to read the ENTIRE article. I thought I was just supposed to read the title and magically everything will fix itself. I appreciate you taking the time to help me however I do not appreciate the caps and the way you have addressed the situation. If you are not going to kindly help people/make suggestions just don't try! And for the record my conclusions are not illogical, the iOS7 thing is on the website in small font (which I got by reading the ENTIRE thing) and you should really find a new hobby because your socialization skills need some help! That goes for you too Chris. Not everyone is a tech nerd

I updated my computer to Itune 11, did not like it, and uninstalled it exactly according to directions. I re-installed Itune10.7.021 for Windows 64bit, but now I keep getting the message "The file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. How can I resolve this problem?
zepel has it, but perhaps some more detail will help.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

updated iTunes and now get an error message that the file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. ??
hello!
i have a similiar problem:
i upgraded my mac from 10.6.8 to 10.7.something recently, but i did NOT update itunes, still running version 10.4.1. now i wanted to open itunes but it tells me, that my iTunes Library.itl was created by a newer version of iTunes - which i never used!

I updated to the newest version of iTunes and now I can not open the program. I get the message "The file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes". What now? I'm using Windows Vista.
Had same problem and solved it without having to reinstore any music or movies:
1. Delete old Library file
2. Go to the 'Previous iTunes Libraries' folder and copy one of the earlier files - note, they have a date extension, e.g. 'iTunes Library 2011-11-01'.
3. Paste this file in your iTuners folder and rename file by removing the date extension - 'iTunes Library'
You should have all your music and paylists in tact, unless it was a really old previous file. -

when i open itunes the warning itunes Library.itl appears with the following message. ..."it cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. after checking software updates we have the lastest version. What to do?
Perhaps check to see if you're accidentally running two different versions of iTunes. There's some information on troubleshooting that in the Opening iTunes section of the following document:

Or can I perform the update from online? Thank you for your help!!
See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash. This message may sometimes be caused by a corrupt library database rather than an outdated version of iTunes.
