ITunes cannot locate the source

I moved my iTunes sources (the original MP3s) from disk C to disk E; then iTunes told me it cannot locate the source. I can either move the source back or locate them myself. However, I just don't want to move the source back but I got like hundreds of songs... Is there a better way than locating them 300 times? It's like one thousand clicks if I do that...

I recommend you put them back and then let iTunes move the files across drives. Follow the instructions in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364 .

  • Error from iTunes Setup Asst -- iTunes cannot locate the CD Config folder

It says: iTunes cannot locate the CD Configuration folder, so you cannot import or burn CDs and DVD's. This folder must be in the same directory as iTunes.
Because of space issues, I moved iTunes to run off of a portable hard drive (it's a silver iomega 100 GB drive, if it matters). I had to uninstall and reinstall iTunes and import the old library into iTunes to get it to work, but now it's giving me the error.
I just imported music from a disc, so that works actually, but when I try to burn a disc, it says "disc burner or software not found." I'm flummoxed.

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

  • When i download mixtapes itunes  cannot locate the songs

i download free mixtapes off datpiff and when they download they open a folder in my documents, when i open the song they open on itunes. Lately they will download but when i close the folder i opened them from itunes cannot locate the songs and i cant put them on my iphone.

    Kbick,  Glad it helped.
By the way, if you don't want to clutter your desktop, you can put them into your iTunes Media folder.  The important thing is to make sure you are using the extracted files, not the ones in the Zip folder.
    Enjoy the music!

  • HT1349 I have multiple albums that I've purchased that iTunes will not allow me to play stating they cannot locate the source. I then tried going into available downloads in iTunes to see if I needed to download it again, and iTunes tells me it is already

I have multiple albums that I've purchased through iTunes, and iTunes will not allow me to play them stating they cannot locate content.I tried going into iTunes Store and look for available downloads, but the store shows it's already downloaded. It's a lot of music i've bought and can't play. How do I fix this?

Forget the pad for a moment and just think about I tunes on your computer.  Every now and then( 3 times over 6 years) when doing an I tunes upgrade, I tunes seems to lose track of some of my music files.  They show up in the I tunes listing, but when you try to play, it cannot find the source.   The cause is always that I have somehow moved some or all of the music to a library that is outside of the set of libraries I have dragged into I tunes.
On your computer, search for one of the songs.  All the missing ones are probably together, and when you find one, you will find the rest.  When you find it, note the directory  and file path to where it lives, then add that path to your I tunes
    Ibarra.
Note, the original listing will still be in I tunes, so you will get double listings for theses songs, and no easy way to tell which is the valid ane and which is not, other than the ! Symbol when it cannot find the file.  I know of no good way to get rid of the duplicate listing except manually going through and deleting them.
One you get them back into your I tunes library, they will sync and play fine.
Second side effect,  if you are streaming to atv, and it comes accross one of those entries that leads nowhere, it simply stops streaming, and you have to restart the play.

  • Itunes cannot locate the original file

The majority of my itunes library has little exclamation marks next to the songs, and whenever I click to play the song, a pop-up states "The song "name of song" could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?" and if I press yes, then I have to go into my music and then search for it. I was wondering why it says that after years of having itunes and most importantly if there was an easier/less time consuming way to locate the original files to play my songs.

    Hi, shopper2472.
The exclamation marks (and the accompanying note) inidicate the files aren't located where iTunes expects them to be. This is most often happens when the files have either been deleted or moved to a different location.
If they have been moved, the best solution is to get them back where they were in the first place. iTunes will be able to find them again - happy ending.
Sometimes though, it seems iTunes loses track of files for no apparent reason. In this case, your only alternative - other than finding them one by one and letting iTunes know - would be to start a new iTunes library all over again.
Regrettably, this method loses playlists and related information (Ratings, Play Counts, Dates Last Played, etc.) If that's not a deal-breaker for you, delete the current entries in your Library by highlighting them - iTunes File menu > Select All - and then right-clicking > Delete . You remove the entries from your Library but keep the files themselves in your iTunes Music folder, assuming that's where they are in the first place.
You can then add them back into your Library by selecting the iTunes Music folder in Windows Explorer and dragging it into the Library entry in the iTunes Source List (left-hand column).

  • My music is backed up on external drive when i disconnect the external drive itunes cannot locate the files on the PC harddrive and none of the music can be accessed how do i fix this?

My harddrive was wiped clean.  I upgraded operating system to fr vista to win 7.  All music was saved on an external hard drive and i have copied this to itunes on new operating system but itunes can not access any of the music without the external drive being connected.  error msg says original files cannot be located.  What to do?

It all depends a bit on how & what you backed up, and how you restored it. Select an affected track. Press CTRL-I to Get Info. Click Cancel when asked to locate the file. Look at the location given on the summary tab. Now look through your computer for file in question. What are the two paths? iTunes could be using the wrong layout (pre or post iTunes 9) in error. Or your library could have been split on the previous system, and not restored to preciesly the same path. Posting back the two paths should make things clearer.

  • Itunes cannot locate the track?

I tried to move an album to my iphone and it said the tracks could not be located?
    What's up with that?
this only happens with the CD's I imported to itunes.  yeah, all 330 of them !
Tracks I've purchased on itunes transfer fine.
If I delete the album and import again....then I can transfer....but ...really .?

iTunes can burn a CD and write out the disc with a feature called CD Text, which is probably what your car's CD player is reading. However if you put the same CD back into iTunes to read the data it only picks up the audio tracks themselves. Unless it can match the tracks to a CDDB entry it won't be able to fill in the details. I haven't heard of any software that can rip & rename such tracks, but then I can't say I've actively looked.

  • Iphone4 having problems syncing music after the latest update.  only half of my music has been synced. during the syncing process the system stalls and i get an error stating itunes cannot locate the file.

My IPhone 4 is experiencing an issue since the latest update.  Itunes will not allow the library to sync my entire library. Itunes get stalled and the error message reads ITunes can't find the file for a certain song.

I had the same issue and was told it was because I was using Windows XP.  Not sure if the same issue or not, but check that first.

  • Dbx cannot locate the (DLM) source codes correctly for 64bit app

It's hard for me to prepare a test case. Because it seems for a simple "hello world" it works.
The reason I raise this issue here is because my project was recently upgraded to compile with 64bit. And since then dbx cannot locate the source codes correctly, especially for some DLM codes. (sometimes it shows to "/usr/include/iso/..." which it should never be!). While it works fine on a 32bit compiled mode.
Did anyone experience the similar situation and can share your idea?
    Thanks in advance.

Can't think of any good reason why going to 64 bit would confuse dbx (except for unknown bug in dbx, which is not impossible).
I'd first look for changes in your build - for example, 32-bit code used to go to bin/ directory, but 64-bit goes to bin/sparcv9, which happens to be a symlink somewhere else or something like that. Symlinks might sometimes confuse dbx, please read
(dbx) help finding-filestopic (in dbx console, type "help finding-files").
Since you are using CC 5.9 that generates DWARF info by default, location and even presence of .o files is not important. All debug info should be in the shared library itself.
Here's another idea: inspect DWARF info by hand and see if it looks correct to you.
    $ dwarfdump a.out | lessLook for
                    DW_AT_name                  a.ccand
DW_AT_comp_dir              /home/maxim/tempThose two should give location of source file (/home/maxim/temp/a.cc in my case). Maybe this will give you some clue.

  • I cannot see the Source List in iTunes. How do I get it back? Thanks!

I cannot see the Source List in iTunes. How do I get it back? I am trying to eject my ipod classic, and there is no option to do so, because I cannot see the ipod, let alone the source list in itunes. I'm also unable to restore my ipod, and I get a message saying it is corrupt, and now I can't even eject it! What do I do?!? Thanks!

    Hello twangchick,
Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
You can use the steps in this article to view the device list in iTunes and eject your iPod. The steps are slightly different for the different version of iTunes:
Locate and view your connected iPhone, iPad or iPod touch in iTunes - Apple Support
I know it can be frustrating to have a device that isn't working as it should, and this link may also help with restoring your iPod classic:
Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
If your iPod can't be restored normally, try placing it into Disk Mode. See the instructions under "iPod devices with a Click Wheel" in this article:

  • My iTunes account says that it cannot locate the original file for all of my songs.  My iPhone still has all the music and is able to play the songs, if I sync and backup my iphone will the songs be replaced with the empty copies from my itunes library?

So basically I tried to back up my itunes library to my external hard drive and when I followed the instructions and then went to play a song it said Orginal file cannot be found. It said that for all of the songs. I'm not sure how to fix what I did, I already tried consolidating and all of that stuff and it didn't locate the files.  I'm guessing that I somehow deleted the original songs along the way.  I synced my iPhone without knowing what I did and surprisingly all of the music is still on my phone.  So now that I've completely screwed up my iTunes account, I need to know how to get all my music back onto my iTunes account and have that library only on my external hard drive, not my computer. Everything looks fine on my iTunes besides the fact that it cannot locate the files but what I'm afraid of is me syncing and backing up my iPhone and then being left with no music because it syncs to the empty songs.  How can I fix this? and if I can't fix my iTunes library is there anyway for me to still be able to backup my iphone and all the music on it, without erasing my music?

Well I'm not sure if I correctly backed up my itunes library because when trying to open itunes from that back up it keeps saying original file not found. Okay this is going to sound confusing but bear with me.  I "backed up" my itunes, meaning I just dragged and dropped the iTunes folder into my external hardrive, and then I changed the destination on iTunes to open from my external hardrive.  It was working fine when I did that, however I did that just on my own, I didn't know about consolidating the files or any of that so I hadn't done that before copying the folder to my external hard drive. I can't remember but I'm pretty sure I deleted the iTunes folder after I had copied it to my external hardrive. So I did that and it was working fine, I was able to open my itunes with my external hardrive.  BUT yesterday I thought that I hadn't done it correctly because I didn't consolidate the files and all that, so I wanted to be more thorough and do that, I followed the steps to do that but when I did that I think it got all the files from my computer and not from my external hard drive so it basically didn't find anything on my computer because I had deleted them. And like an idiot, I replaced the iTunes folder on my external hard drive (the one I did correctly the first time), with the one I did wrong. So I believe I pretty much deleted all the music files from both my external hard drive and my computer. Please correct me if I'm wrong?
I believe getting all my music back on my itunes is a lost cause. BUT I still have all my songs and stuff on my iPhone. My question is, if I plug my phone into my computer and sync it, will it erase all my songs from my phone? A little more info, my iTunes still has the names and stuff of all my songs, they just can't be played because the files are missing, my iPhone doesn't need to erase and sync when I plug in my phone because it's already synced to my computer. What I'm afraid of is when I plug in my phone to backup and sync, will it erase my music because it can't find the files on my computer or external hard drive anymore? Or will it just leave the songs because they're already there (on my phone) and only sync the new songs that I've downloaded? I just need to know is my iTunes still going to be functional as far as me being able to backup my phone?
I have a lot of songs purchased from iTunes but a lot (like 60%) are from CDs that I no longer have. So re-downloading my music would only account for 40% of my library.

  • How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows sear

How can I download a previously downloaded purchase to my iTunes library on my laptop when the listing for the song in my library won't play because it says it cannot locate the file. Yes I have searched my iTunes folders and also done a full windows search. The track plays on my iPad and my iPhones but will not play on my laptop!?
It has an "!" To the left of the song title in my library
My worry is that if I sync my iPad/iPhone then I will lose the track on those also!

If you cannot find the file on your hard drive then once you delete the current broken entry you should be able to redownload from iTunes in the Cloud. This assumes the item in question qualifies. Note that audiobooks, digital booklets, iTunes LPs & Extras, ringtones, selected movies etc. don't.
If prompted don't hide the item. You may find that you need to close and then reopen iTunes before it will appear for download.
