ITunes keeps changing to the default folder location

I have no idea what's going on here, but, it's getting very frustrating.
Here's the situation: I am running the latest version of iTunes (11.whatever) on Windows 7, and my default iTunes Library location is in My Music on my C:. Unfortunately, my C: is a tiny SSD, and I don't want all of my content going in there, since there's no room. I have two other internal hard drives that I use for file storage, and I want to relocate my library to one of these drives. These drives are not external, they are not networked, they are just regular, plain old drives that boot along with the computer.
I have tried following the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
But, I had no luck with it. When I follow these steps, I open up iTunes, I turn on the "Keep iTunes Organized" option as stated, then press OK. Then I change the file location (in Advanced, under Preferences) to the place I want the library to reside, on a different drive. After pressing OK, I go to File, Library, and choose Organize Library (checking off the "Consolidate Files" option). After this completes, I try to delete the original iTunes library in My Music on C:, but, it won't let me, telling me the file is still in use. After closing iTunes, I am able to deleted it. Then, when I open iTunes again, it just completely ignores the folder that I created and moved everything to, makes a new folder in My Music, and goes back to default settings like nothing ever happened.
I've seen a lot of people complaining about this problem when trying to set up their libraries on networked or external drives, but, that is not my issue. Any help would be appreciated, and please let me know if I can provide any more information.
Thanks!

Hi
First post so do not shoot me down if I break some rule here but as I was getting the same issue, V Frustrating i know, I thought I would post my solution.
Felix, above pointed me in the right direction but I did this
After following the steps from Dr Von Smith I closed iTunes
Went to the old C drive location
Moved the
iTunes Library Extras.itdb
iTunes Library Genius.itdb
iTunes Library.itl
iTunes Library.xml
iTunes Music Library.xml
and the Album Artwork
to the new location on my D drive
Held shift and clicked on iTunes icon
it asked me for library location so I pointed it to the new location on D
Closed iTunes
Opened iTunes nomally and the Preferences > Advanced > location has held
Time will tell but at least it seems to be sticking now....

    Why do my bookmarks keep changing to the default every time I close Safari and why does my history keep clearing?
    I want to save my bookmarks for my favorite pages but every time I close Safari the default ones (Apple, iCloud, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia, Yahoo, News and Popular) re appear.
    Basicaly I want Google instead of Twitter and Yahoo and I also don't want it to keep clearing my history.

    Step one is to log into a newly created admin user account and see if the problem persists.

  • How can we change the default folder location (avoiding problems with Temporary Internet Files)

    (Environment in question: Windows 7 secure desktop (running as user not admin), Office 2010)
    Hello,
      As has been touched on in various forums (such as here: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/797451), when one opens a PDF attachment in Outlook, Acrobat and Reader store the file in the "Temporary Internet Files" folder (f/k/a OLK folder in previous versions of Outlook.  There are two major problems with this:
      First, as Microsoft has documented in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817878, attachments end up here staying here under certain conditions (go checks your now, you'll find some!), which ends up being a file attachment no man's land, and that can present security risks (e.g. if data we thought was deleted still lives in that folder).
      Secondly, the first time you open an attachment in Acrobat and do a Save As, Acrobat is defaulting to the Temporary Internet Files location.  This folder (as noted in the thread linked above) is ridiculously hard to get to for the average user, so they can end up storing a file and then losing it.
      We've found that if we open Acrobat once, do a save as, and change to the users Documents folder, the change sticks.  But how can we have Acrobat default to Documents instead of that temporary location?
      Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Have you check to see if Acrobat sets a registry entry or file preference for the first Save As?  That's where I would start looking.  Process Monitor is a good tool for this.

  • Moved media to TC. Now itunes keeps changing default library location

    I realize this might be better suited in the iTunes discussion forum however...
    I recently purchased a time capsule and moved all my media to the new drive. I changed the default library location in preferences. Problem is, every time I quit and relaunch iTunes, the default library location reverts back to my old location on my mac. Any ideas how I can get iTunes to remember my new default location? It's as if it's picking up a location file somewhere that is telling it to create a new library on my mac's hard drive.
    Thanks for any input.

    I don't have a TC but I also keep my iTunes library on an external Firewire drive and the following is the behaviour. Maybe it's so for you too:
    • When the firewire drive is mounted on the desktop and I open iTunes, iTunes will link back to the library on the firewire drive.
    • When the firewire drive is unmounted and I open iTunes, iTunes preferences will revert the library to default back to the internet drive.
    • BUT, when I remount the firewire drive, and open iTunes again (after it's been closed), iTunes preferences will automatically go back to linking the library on the firewire drive.
    So in short: when unmounted, iTunes links music library to the original default which is the internal drive. When mounted, iTunes will automatically relink music back to the firewire drive.
    Does it work like so for iTunes on Time Capsule?

  • In PC I have changed the default app location from default to other and copied the previous content to new location and changed the Default location in preference. Now in iTunes, my previous apps are not visible. Is there any solution to this?

    In PC I have changed the default app location from (c:/users/username/My Music/iTunes) to other (d:iTunes)  and copied the previous content to new location and changed the Default location in Edit preference. Now in iTunes, my previous apps are not visible. Is there any solution to this?

    wjosten - thanks very much for the detailed instructions. I'll try this as soon as I get my replacement and it looks like you'll probably end up getting the green tick

  • Changing the Default Save location in Cap4

    I know its possible to change the publish folder (Edit > Preferences) but what about the default Save location? Any clue how to change that from My Documents?

    Hi again
    Ouch! Not the network!
    One of the hard learned issues that folks are unaware of until they encounter problems is that Captivate does not do well when a project is stored on a network. It's fine to keep projects there in order to back them up or as a transfer pivot location to allow others to edit, but you never want to open Captivate, click File > Open and browse to a network location to open a project for editing.
    Best practice at this point is to keep projects on your local C drive when you make edits.
    Cheers... Rick

  • I have transfered my library my library to a NAS drive. How do I stop Itunes from creating the default folder on the local drive?

    I've transferred my Itunes Media Library to a NAS drive, and pointed Itunes (using the advanced preferences tab) to the relevant folder on the NAS drive. I have done this to free up disk space on a computer I primarily use for work but which I use both at home and at work. The NAS drive is at home. (To clarify, I am not expecting Itunes to function at work, only at home when access to the NAS drive is available).
    Under certain circumstances Itunes will start-up at work and when it does it will create the folder structure for the Itunes Media Library in the default location (on the local drive) instead of looking for the location I have specified (the NAS drive) which it should not be able to find when I am at work and telling me that it can't find it (which would be fine).
    How do I stop Itunes from recreating the default folder structure and defaulting the file path to the standard media library location on my local drive? Every time this happens I have to re-point Itunes to the NAS drive location, which often requires me to reconsolicate libraries which is tedious and time consuming. It seems that in the process of one of these consolidations I have lost some of the media files. They are still in the library (ie. visible in the Itunes window) but Itunes can't find the media associated with that file - identifying them with an excamation mark "!".
    Any help with this would be appreciated, as I have read several forums and threads, and despite trying several different approaches I have been unable to address the problem, which appears to be exacerbated by the laptop being remote from the NAS drive.

    Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them? I'm thinking that if the library file is only available at home then the ITunes library won't get corrupted at work when it can't find the media, in the event that I accidentally start up itunes eg. while opening an attachment or disc that can be read by Itunes.
    iTunes will start up and you will have an empty library.
    Can I put the ".itl" and other database files on the NAS, and if so where would I put them?
    Yes.
    Quit iTunes.
    Copy the /Music/iTunes/ folder on the NAS.
    Move the /iTunes media/ folder currently on the NAS into  the /iTunes/ folder you just copied to the NAS.
    Hold Option, launch iTunes, select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the NAS.
    You can delete /Music/iTunes/ folder on the internal drive.
    If you launch iTunes while NOT comnnected to the NAS, iTunes will recreate the /Music/iTunes/ folder and you will have an empty library.
    WHen you are again connected to the NAS, just do step 4 above.
    Do you know what the advantages and disadvantages are of having the database files like the ".itl" files stored locally versus on the NAS?
    Keeping everyhing together inside the iTunes folder makes it "cleaner" and simpler to manage everything.

  • When I change the default folder to save downloads in the options menu, it later reverts to the default folder even though I have made not changes in options. Any ideas? thanks!

    In the Options menu I changed the default download location (folder) to a folder I have on my desktop and saved the changes. But this option reverts to the default folder when I turn on my computer and open FF the next day.

    Thank you for your response.
    I do use CCleaner and just ran it. It did not change the download option folder that I had changed from the default so it appears that this is not cause.
    Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again!

  • Want to change the default save location- users have networked home dirs

    I am doing some work for a school which is still using iMovie HD because it allows them to save their movie projects wherever they want. The issue is that iMovie 08 and 09 do not allow you to change the location in which they save their movies. Currently all users/students have network home folders, so their home directory, documents, etc all pull across the network. All students are limited to 1GB of space, and the system is an older G4 Server- 2GHz with 1GB of RAM and 2x 500GB hard drives. Since the students can make some large projects transferring that data back and forth can kill the server. Currently they are staying with iMovie HD so they can save it to the local hard drive, and when the student comes back in for class they sit at the same machine- thus giving them access to their stored movie files.
    This summer they plan to upgrade both Xserves, but again internal storage in the Xserve is a joke and in my opinion not planned out properly. Which might require them to use one of the Apple Promise RAID units- major financial burden on a school.
    I wanted to see if there was a way to change the default save location for iMovie 08 or 09 to the local storage rather then the "Home" folder for each user.
    Thanks so much!

    wrong info.
    iM08/09 has a different file concept than iMHD6.
    Both versions allow to store Events (=huge files) 'anywhere' to usb or firewire connected, hfs(+) formatted harddrives. the Project files (=small files) can be de-located from 'internal' drive with vers09, for 08 you have to use a socalled symLink to de-locate Project files.

  • SBS 2011 GPO for changing the default save location for Word/Excel 2013 not working

    So this is a strange one. I've got an SBS 2011 server that's the only domain controller in the org. I've created a GPO to change the default save location for Excel 2013 and Word 2013 using the Office 2013 ADMX files which were installed to the PolicyDefinitions
    folder.
    The GPO (U-Office2013 Default Save Location) only contains:
    1. User Configuration - Microsoft Excel 2013/Excel Options/Save - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
    2. User Configuration - Microsoft Word 2013/Word Options/Advanced/File Locations - Default file location - Enabled - Z:\
    The GPO is linked at the OU that contains my users for my SBS organization.
    When I do a gpupdate /force on a windows 7 system with office2013 installed, and then run a gpresult/rsop, the policy appears to be applied successfully as it lists my GPO under the Applied GPOs list on the workstation:
    Applied GPOs
    Default Domain Policy dyndns.local AD (24), Sysvol (24)
    U-Office2013 Default Save Location domain.local/SBSusers AD (6), Sysvol (6)
    In the gpresult report, the applied settings appear under:
    Administrative Templates
    Extra Registry Settings
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\excel\options\defaultpath Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
    software\policies\microsoft\office\15.0\word\options\doc-path Z:\ U-Office2013 Default Save Location
    BUT, when I go to the workstation, and check office->options-Save-default file path, the path has not been changed to what the GPO is pushing.
    The strange thing is that in my test environment running 2008R2 server and Win7 with Office 2013 and identical settings the default save location is applied and works as expected.
    Any ideas?
    I've already tried re-installing the ADMX templates and re-created the GPO's several times.
    I should also note that other GPO's on the SBS2011 server such as the folder redirection GPO work as expected on the same windows 7 system. It just appears to be an issue with the default save location in office2013 and other Office 2013 related GPOs which
    utilize the recently added ADMX template that don't seem to be working for me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Justin,
    Thanks for your reply. I have tried several different user accounts (all have local admin privileges to the workstation) with the same issue. The default save path does not get applied from the GPO to any of the users i've tried. Here's the steps I took
    per your suggestion:
    1. log on as a user who has never logged onto the workstation before.
    2. run gpupdate /force (entered y for yes when prompted to log off).
    3. Log back in as the user and open Office and check the default save path. It has not been changed to match the GPO setting.
    4. Check rsop to see if the policy was applied. Rsop states the gpo was applied successfully.
    I have attached the gpsvc.log file from a the session described above. The GPO Guid in question is: {DC3C93EC-7C28-48E9-BA38-FCA1E275A207}. Its common name is: U-Word 2013 Default Save Location. It's only setting is:

    Hi brs texas,
    Do I understand correctly that you're downloading a PDF that you received in an email? The default save location is a function of the email client, not of Acrobat or the PDF, so steps to change that folder would vary by email client. Please check the documentation for your email.

    To read the value from the registry you can issue the following command:
    DECLARE  @BackupDirectory  VARCHAR ( 100 )
    EXEC  master.. xp_regread  @rootkey = 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' ,
       @key = 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQLServer' ,
       @value_name = 'BackupDirectory' ,
       @BackupDirectory = @BackupDirectory  OUTPUT
    SELECT  @BackupDirectory
    This will provide the following output, since we changed the value above directly in the registry.
    If we want to change this back to the default folder we can use the following command
    EXEC  master.. xp_regwrite
          @rootkey = 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' ,
          @key = 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQLServer' ,
          @value_name = 'BackupDirectory' ,
          @type = 'REG_SZ' ,
          @value = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQL\Backup'
    If we run this command again we can see that this has changed:
    DECLARE  @BackupDirectory  VARCHAR ( 100 )
    EXEC  master.. xp_regread  @rootkey = 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' ,
       @key = 'SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.2\MSSQLServer' ,
       @value_name = 'BackupDirectory' ,
       @BackupDirectory = @BackupDirectory  OUTPUT
    SELECT  @BackupDirectory
    To determine where SQL Server is installed you can right click on the server name, select Properties.  The root directory as highlighted below will show you the corresponding install name for the instance such as "MSSQL2" highlighted below, so you know which registry entry needs to be changed.
