ITunes U Sending Different URLs when Retrieving RSS Feed

We have a .aspx page that generates RSS feeds for all of our classes on iTunes U, some of which are private and some public. For the private classes, we're checking the signature iTunes U sends along in the URL to make sure the request is coming from iTunes before giving back the RSS feed for the class (with the correct content type), otherwise we return a 403 status.
The problem we're encountering is that iTunes is sending 3 different URLs when entering the RSS feed address in iTunes.
For example, one of our rss feed URLs might be http://www.sitename.edu/rss.aspx?classid=10 .
iTunes U is sending requests to
http://www.sitename.edu:80/rss.aspx?classid=10,
http://www.sitename.edu:80/rss.aspx?classid=10&time=foo&userID=foo&signature=foo ,
and
http://www.sitename.edu:80/rss.aspx?classid=10&time=foo&userID=foo&signature=foo &time=bar&userID=bar&signature=bar .
The first and third URLs both fail our check. As of a couple of weeks ago iTunes U was pulling in our private feeds just fine, but this week when we put in a URL iTunes U fails to get the feed with an error ("iTunes U could not update the content because iTunes U could not reach the specified feed. Verify the feed specified in the feed URL field is available, and then try again."), presumably because of the 3 different URLs it's sending at the same time. (We haven't changed the way our feed works in that time.)
We're using Type: Feed, Security: None, Signature: Append SHA-256 Signature, Check for changes: Daily, and I'm entering the URL into iTunes U as http://www.sitename.edu/rss.aspx?classid=10 .

Any word on this? The only people that could really check on this are at Apple. From the documentation, it's pretty clear that the only URL iTunes U should be sending is the one with one time, userID, and signature, plus it was working until the multiple URLs started being sent.
We really can't leave off the security check because of copyright issues (students in the class are legally allowed to view the materials but anyone outside is not).

    See edits above.
Select the feed / feeds in questions and export.

Sure Thing...This is a screenshot of the Slider Menu with the buttons to the social media as they should be. Note: this is a screen shot taken from a "preview in browser" (Chrome) through Muse. When it builds and uploads, I no longer see the buttons and there is no hover state as there should be. Hope this helps-

  • Firefox changes the url of my RSS feed. How do I fix this?

It changes the URL from http://www.vict-consultancy.co.uk/rss_feed.rss to feed://www.vict-consultancy.co.uk. The result is the xml code is shown as text on the web page http://www.vict-consultancy.co.uk/rss_feed.rss
The RSS feed seems to be working properly in other browsers (IE, Safari, Opera), it's only Firefox that is doing this.

This is only a problem if you open the feed link directly in the location bar.
If a feed is added via a link tag in the page code then it should work as you can via the above posted code.<br />
Firefox 13 doesn't have the "subscribe to this page" icon on the Navigation Toolbar by default, so you would have to add it yourself to easily discover live feeds.

  • Itunes can only find one episode on my RSS feed... help?!

I am having some issues with getting my podcast up and running. My RSS seems to be working and the files seem to be accessible yet only one of my test episodes works. I have been attempting to use garage band to share episodes with iweb with no luck. the only episode that seemed to work was an older audio file that I dropped straight into iweb (skipping the editing process in garage band). I am trying to figure out why only one episode out of several can be found by itunes...
This is my RSS feed address: http://brentviewhub.com/Hub_Ministries/Talks/rss.xml
Here is the link to the Itunes working episode: http://brentviewhub.com/Hub_Ministries/Media/100115_004.mp3
I feel a little frustrated as I am a little code illiterate, any help would be much appreciated!
    Dan

I've looked at it again: my FireFox will play two of the mp3 episodes, but complains that it need an additional plugin to play the earliest episode, despite the fact that it's also MP3.
iTunes will only download the second to latest episode: it complains that the other cannot be found on the server.
Safari will play all of them.
All except the second episode have spaces in the filename: these are replaced in the feed with the code %20 and normally in this situation it all works OK (it's when the URL in the feed has spaces that it falls over) so though it's a messy looking solution it shouldn't cause a problem.
Though you are using iWeb to create the podcast - which should work perfectly well - you are apparently not using MobileMe but another server. Servers have to be configured to deliver different types of file correctly: so, for example, if you have an M4a file but the server hasn't been set up to deliver it properly, instead of playing in a browser as it should it will be downloaded (which is what happens with an unknown file type).
It can't be as simple as that here, since Safari is not having any problems, but as FireFox and iTunes are it does suggest that the server may be responding incorrectly to certain types of request. That's something you would have to take up with the people running it.
However since, although it might be coincidental, it is the case that the one trouble-free file doesn't have a space in the filename, it would be sensible to get rid of the spaces. To do this you will have to rename the files and drag them anew into iWeb, and then do a complete republish: this will rewrite the feed to match the new file names, but of course all the files will have to be uploaded again. As it's a comparatively easy (if tiresome) step it's obviously worth trying first.

  • I am unable to submit my RSS feed into iTunes

Podcast RSS feed not being accepted by iTunes
I have registered my main podcast RSS feed in iTunes successfully. I want to migrate this RSS feed from feedburner to PowerPress, but I want to prototype it first before I move the real feed. To that end, I created another Blogger blog site and Feedburner rss feed that has the same settings as my main feed. The feed is using SmartCast to configure the RSS feed for iTunes compatibility. I cannot get the test feed to load into iTunes though. I get this error message:
Podcast cover art must be at least 1400x1400 pixel JPG or PNG, in RGB color space, and hosted on a server that allows HTTP head requests.
I had the artist give me a 1400x1400 pixel version of the logo in RGB color space (I’m not sure how to verify this).  Here is a link to the logo, if anyone can tell by looking at the picture or site what is wrong that needs to be fixed. http://s24.postimg.org/lvuuf7v91/ARP_logo_i_Tunes.jpg
I have read as many forum posts as I can to try and solve this issue and nothing has worked so far. Can someone tell me what is wrong with my image or RSS feed that is causing iTunes to reject the feed?
    Here is the RSS feed:

  • How Can I delete an RSS Feed in iTunes/podcasts?

I have an old rss feed that I want deleted in itunes. I have created a new rss feed and it's up and working great. I want the old one deleted.
I have used "Report a Concern" and asked itunes to delete the old feed, but nothing has happened. so I went to the files and renamed them all and re-pinged the page so itunes would realize that the feed no longer works, but that hasn't work either. I've searched the forum but can't seem to find out how to have itunes delete the old podcast feed.
    Any ideas?
I realize that I should have done this a different way, but I didn't know that then... I do now.

Just to confirm that you originally had a podcast accepted in the iTunes Store, and now you have had a second version accepted with a different Store URL? The procedure you have followed is the correct one, though I don't know how long it's likely to take the Store staff to get round to removing it. Just remove the original feed from the server: it will still show in the Store, which has cached it, but obviously subscribing won't work, and the absence of the feed may encourage the Store staff to remove the Store page.

  • Problem with RSS Feed & iTunes U

    Hello:
The following RSS feed passes feedvalidator with two minor errors, and other feeds have these similar two minor errors but work with iTunes U.
But, the following feed doesn't work with iTunes U.
    http://www.kued.org/productions/utahnow/?action=videocast&cat=4
    Any suggesitons?

An additional note: the error message iTunesU is returning is:
    Error
iTunes U could not update the content in this group because iTunes U could not download the specified RSS feed. Verify that the RSS feed specified in the Feed URL is available, and then try again.
Clearly the feed is "available", and is in fact error free:
    http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kued.org%2Fproductions%2 Futahnow%2F%3Faction%3Dvideocast%26cat%3D4
I've been through the feed pretty thoroughly and cannot see what in it could be giving iTunesU grief.

  • No redirection to different url upon http connections limit exceeded

    Hi,
As of Standalone OC4j 10.1.2, if you want messages to be redirected to a different URL when the maximum connections limit is reached, you would include the HTTP redirect URL to max-http-connections tag inside server.xml.
    <max-http-connections max-connections-queue-timeout="120" socket-backlog="50"
    value="100">http://optional.redirect.url/page.jsp</max-http-connections>
I have a standalone OC4j 10.1.3, and would like to be able to redirect to different URL when maximum connections limit is reached but the above max-http-connections does not work and I am not redirected to different URL when maximum connectionns limit is reached. I read user guide of OC4j 10.1.3 and there is no mentioning of max-http-connections at all. In there, they talk about limiting concurrency via http thread pool but there is no discussion as to the mechanism of redirecting users to a different URL where I can display a user friendly message to say "Server is busy, please try again later..." instead of browser display a message "Page cannot be displayed"..
    Please advice,
    Thanks

Any thoughts on above issue ? please help.
    thanks
    Sam

  • RSS Feed URLs

I need help pronto! I have podcasts on iWeb and I wan to put them on my existing website and not on .mac. I clicked publish to folder and it asked me for a URL for an RSS feed. Do I put my site address there? What do I put? I don't know. Please help!

Do I put my site address there? What
do I put? I don't know. Please help!
Yes, you put your site address, like http://www.myname.com.
Make sure when you upload via ftp that you upload 2 things: the folder with the same name as your site has inside iWeb, and the index.html file published alongside that folder. If you don't do the folder you will break the rss link.

  • HELP?!? - Trying to find an RSS feed URL

In the latest update of iTunes the Podcast page has been reworked, and you can no longer find the little "i" icon that used to tell you about the Podcast, and it would display the URL of the RSS feed.
Anyone know how to find a podcast URL feed now that the icon is missing in the new iTunes???
Any help would be great. I just want to look at some of the feeds I like to see how their code compares to mine for accuracy.
    Thanks!

Scratch the above....it was answered elsewhere, thx

  • ITunes U RSS Feeds

I am an Admin at a Community College in VA that is part of a system of 23 Community Colleges. Our Systems Office also has an iTunes U instance and I am using RSS feeds from smart groups to give them dynamic content from our instance.
However every month or so the RSS feeds magically stop working. Here's the error message
iTunes U encountered the following error while trying to access the podcast RSS feed: iTunes U could not update the content in this group because iTunes U could not reach the specified RSS feed.
    Any ideas?

Apple allows you to interact with iTunes U as an administrator through an XML-based web service. It's described in the iTunes U administrators guide:
    http://tinyurl.com/5nm73n
In particular, you're looking for the UpdateGroup web service directive:
    http://tinyurl.com/bmh2xw
If you send Apple an UpdateGroup directive, referring to a specific group (tab) within a course that feeds from one of your RSS servers, you're asking Apple to process the feed "now" (where "now" is defined to be "as soon as possible") as opposed to having to wait for an overnight feed refresh.
Have a look at the documentation ... if you're a little bit of a developer, it should make some sense. If not, I owe someone from Apple a favor and might give you a simpler way of using the directive ... without requiring you to write code yourself.

  • URL for RSS feed

    Hi,
I'm linking my blog to another site. How do I find the URL for the RSS feed?
    thanks,

Go to your blog and click on the RSS button in the URL window of Safari to view the rss feed.  Then copy the RSS feed page's URL from the URL field at the top.

  • Adding tags to RSS feed with Podomatic to change hosting location

I'm currently using Podomatic to host my podcasts but I want to move to a different service.  I know that I need to add <itunes:new-feed-url> in the RSS feed for iTunes to see the change but I'm not seeing where I'm able to manually do that in Podomatic.  Unfortunatly Podomatic's customer service isn't helpful and will not provide a solution.  Does anyone have any advice?
    Thank you!

To Confirm what Roger said - Podomatic sadly is one of those podcast hosts that locks your into their feed.  Like with Souncloud and buzzsprout.  So just make sure your new host is not one of those either.
Always make sure when picking a podcast host whos feed you are going to use - that you can do these two things with your feed on your own.
    1. Put in the iTunes new feed tag
    2. Add in a redirect from your feed to a new feed.
The iTunes new feed tag alone is not good enough you also want the redirect available as well.
Let us know what the new feed is and I can let you know if you should use it or not.
    Regards,
    Rob W

  • Confused rss feed that starts with http?

I'm trying out blubrry.com (free service for podcasts like mine with no advertising) as a way to collect stats on how many downloads happen for my podcast. This was recommended by another visitor in this forum. I use mobile me from apple to store my podcasts, and they don't have a way to track these stats. (Wish now I'd gotten libsync working - I think they have this)
My podcast (in the iTunes store) is "Unpolished Performances" and the rss feed, as I understand it is,
    feed://web.me.com/simpleromantic/Simple_Romantic/Podcast/rss.xml
Blubbry wants me to add the podcast to their site as well.
I signed up as a member with Blubbry then I went to add my program to their site using this link
    http://www.blubrry.com/addpodcast.php
When I get to the part where I want to add my rss feed, I pasted in the url
    feed://web.me.com/simpleromantic/Simple_Romantic/Podcast/rss.xml
I get an error message back, saying that a feed url starts with 'http://'. I tried simply replacing 'feed:' with 'http:' but I continue to get an error messge.saying "Please enter a valid feed url"
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Laurel

I'm so glad you told me I was trying the right url. I went back and tried again and it took!
Gee, I wonder what I was really typing before?
Well, until somebody else told me that was valid, I guess my fingers were just not believing!
As always, you know it all.
(Well at least I know a little more than before. While you were answering my question I was writing an answer to YouthLeaderDon - we'll see if that gets him anywhere)
