ITunes very slow downloads of apps, podcasts, and music with library stored on a Windows Home Server (WHS)
First, some history. I setup a Windows Home Server (WHS) to store all my media. I had configured itunes to store its library at \\server\music (this would be whatever shared folder you choose to store your music on for your WHS (and possibly NAS box)) and itunes was managing my library. Once everything was imported into the server, I found I was getting horrible speeds for downloading apps, podcasts, and music. We are talking 10 minutes to download a 14Mb file on a Fibre connection where I consistently get 25 to 30Mb / second performance. Syncing my iPad / iPhones was a nightmare due to the time needed to be invested in it.
The server, the PC, the router and corresponding switches were all gigabit and yet I was getting dial-up speeds. Transfering files between systems was well within spec, but itunes was running as if it were using smoke signals. I spent some time searching various user groups and support sites to no avail.
To correct this, I only had to log onto the WHS (or NAS) and disable the iTunes Server.
Reboot of the server, reboot your iTunes PC, and you are good to go. My podcasts went from a 20 minute download time for an average episode of T.W.I.T. to about 7 to 10 seconds.
UPDATE
Please disregard the above. While the above did improve performance for a short time, the problem returned. I spent the next week running a full Spinrite on all 4 1TB HDDs that were in the NAS. All drives were fine. I then did some research on the individual drives, and it turns out that 3 of them were 7200RPM Hitachi's and the latest drive added was a 1TB Western Digital GREEN drive (WD10EADS). This was the source of the issue.

Extremely slow downloads of TV shows and music videos
Until around Feb 15th I had no problems downloading TV shows episodes in about 40 minutes time for ~500MB file. Since Feb 15 it takes about 40 to 48 hours (yes, HOURS!!!) for each episode to download. I purchased Madonna's Confessions Tour video (1.43GB) today and it also is slow as ****, showing 96 hours to finish, taking about 6 minutes to download just 1MB.
What a heck is going on?!!!
Emails to Apple support resulted in generic, bu*sht reply that I should have a broadband connection to download from iTunes Store, regardless the fact that I clearly explained in my emails that I have broadband cable connection and downloading for example 100MB file from Apple Support Downloads server takes me under 6 minutes. Subsequent emails with more explanations and speed tests results showing my connection's download at 1.94 MB/s resulted in reply "Sorry, we cannot help you as we are only dealing with basic iTunes support".
What a crap it is?!!!!

Anyone with a solution?all i can do is agree with you- again very very slow in portugal from US site with high speed broadband and all the help i can give it at this end! made big mistake of buying all mythbusters, extreme engineering and shark week for my sons ipod in one chunk before i realised the slowness and had to leave my computer working away at downloading for 2-3 days!!! NIGHTMARE!
to top it all i now keep getting error code -100008 and am unable to download what i have bought even when i delete and check for purchases again.
judging from what you have all been saying it may be a while til i get a response from apple as to whats wrong! -
Unable to control iTunes app - podcast and music

disconnect from the wifi and try on cellular data, if you can access the apps, then the problems lies with your router. -
ITunes has lost all my APP purchases and reset my library and playlists.
Well as above. I dont have any other username accounts. iTunes has had a breakdown and misplaced my entire library which is on my external hard drive, I havent lost the somgs just the location and all the metadata pertaining to it. Its a pain to reinstate it all but the most worrying part is that all of my APP purchases which I kept stored on iTunes are missing, which is a n awful lot of cash as they are mostly quite expensive music production and photography and film apps. How can I recover my metadata for iTunes and how do I restore all my APP purchases?
Ok I have trouble shooted the problem myself and found the culprit. For whatever reason iTunes had created a n entire different library next to my usual libray and was referring to that!? I removed it and iTunes and the app purchases are back to normal. Phew!

VERY Slow on startup (10 mins) and now with programs?? help!!
Just wanted to know if any one knew some easy fixes, or is my hard drive or board on the way out??...its only 1.5 years old, so its should not have these problems...my warranty was just for one year. I love MAC but this is the second computer that seems to just expire around the two year mark, its a bit upsetting:-((((

IMAC G5 isight Mac OS X (10.4.9)No easy fixes, but try resetting your PRAM and your SMU and see if that speed things up. How much RAM do you have? IMHO, you need at least 1 GB to function with any kind of speed.

Home Sharing in Itunes 9 on Windows Home Server
I have installed iTunes 9 and have started using Home Sharing. I want to be able to use Home Sharing with my WHS (Windows Home Server) as our music is stored there and we have iTunes on all computers, plus 2 iphones and iPods.
This would need a Home Sharing server (service) to run on the WHS. Has Apple produced such a piece of software or can I install the Home Sharing component of iTunes 9 on my server? I am advised (by Microsoft) that installing iTunes 9 is not a good idea on WHS as WHS is designed to run services not user apps.
Any suggestions or has Apple someting in plan?
It seems that sharing between PCs is a bit behind the times when many people have moved over to Home Servers or NAS drives.I too would like to would like to know how to implement iTunes on Windows Home Server (WHS) so my Music library can be stored on a redundant source that is always available to be accessed from any PC in the house. Does Apple have a way to do this or plans to create a product for WHS?
I understand Firefly can be used to stream music content on a WHS, but think this should be a complete iTunes solution with a common library and allow playlist storage from iTune clients that connect to it. -
Restoring Itunes library on a windows home server
Help everyone! I have had my itunes library stored on my HP WHS for the past year. Over the holidays I reformatted my Imac HD as it was sooo slow. Reinstalled OSX 10.6 and the latest version of Itunes.
I have my WHS mounted and have clicked on the option key while opening Itunes, I for the life of me can't get Itunes to see the remote library. The error I get when trying to open this library is: An Itunes library file could not be found in the folder "Itunes Share". Please chose a different folder.
I have tried different folders within the share but no luck, I do notice there are files withing the music folder called "Musiclib.xml.lock" Is my problem that this file is locked and Itunes can't see it?
Please help, I urgently need my music back and my Apple TV content back.I am trying to find the itunes library file on my windows home server. I believe all the files are on there. Yes it is logged into my WHS automatically, I can see the files on there ect.
Yes the WHS management software is installed on the Mac.

So, I copied my entire "iTunes" music folder from mu C: Drive on my laptop to my shared music folder on my WHS. Note I did not delete the original files from my C: drive nor have I changed the "Media Folder Location".
Off first glance it looked like all the files and folders copied to the server folder when I check the properties of each folder in Windows (i.e. the properties are identical). However, when I jump back and forth between my "Music" and my "Shared" Libraries within iTunes, it appears that the "Shared" library is less 110 songs (0.5 GB). Why would this be?

TS130 and Windows Home Server 2011
Hello,
Just got a New TS130 1105B2U and am curious if anyone has used Windows Home Server 2011. I did not see it on the list.
Also, I notice there is a 4TB cap on the drive support. Is that only for the hardware RAID support? Is it possible to install an additional drive controller in conjunction with the motherboard or is the cap based on the BIOS?
I looked around the forum but could not find an answer.

Lenovo never announced support for Windows Home Server 2011. As it was a consumer-oriented OS, it was not in-line with our strategy for those systems. WHS2011 runs on core of Windows Server 2008 R2 and is the close cousin of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials, both of which are fully qualified for use on ThinkServer TS130. You should be able to find compatible drivers at support.lenovo.com using either of those as your match to get your server functional.
Support note: Lenovo would be unable to provide any level of support for the OS. This does not impact your hardware support. I'm going to guess you are familiar with these types of restictions since WHS2011 is only sold as an OEM licence.
As to your question about drive capacity, that must be an old revision of the manual. Lenovo has since annouced 3TB drives, making 6TB the maximum capacity by the system given Lenovo ThinkServer-branded options in a 2-bay system.

ITunes is very slow when updating apps
Since a few days iTunes is very slow when updating apps and downloading updates for iPad etc.
Very often a download is ended with the message server reply time to long.
I'm running the latest updated version of iTunes on an iMac mid-2010 with latest OS. I have some 3-4 GB out of 12 GB memory free and 70GB free out of 500 GB storage. I have measured my internet connection speed and it is very good 95-98 Mbit/sec.
I can't see any obvious reason to why iTunes is so slow. Have anyone experienced this? Please help!Yes! I have the exact same issue. So I tried some things.
I am on Uvese (via wifi) and was trying to update the apps on my PC via itunes. Taking FOREVER. So i tired it directly from my iPhone 6 via wifi - same issue. Then I turned off wifi on the iPhone and updated over (ATT) LTE. That worked great. I am thinking it is a Uverse/ATT issue at this point. -

Have FireFox 3.1.6...less cumbersome. Lately it's been freezing up (can't close page without using Ctrl, Alt, Delete) and it is VERY slow to open. What's up with that?
Have made no system changes. Have Avast for antivirus,. which updates itself regularly.
Run Sys Defrag a few times a week. Don't know what else to do other than uninstall and reinstall.

Very Slow Downloads & Timeouts.......Interesting Info!

Like many other users have posted I have been having problems with very slow downloads in the last few days and connection problems to the itunes store where the rest of the internet was fine.
After trying disabling firewalls, upgrading to IE7 etc. etc. I tried using Anonymizer SSL to bypass my ISP and any country restrictions and create a direct pipe from my PC to the anonymizer servers in the USA. I should add I am in Japan by the way and access the US store but have had no problems up until a few days ago.
Low and behold my download speed is back.
I am awaiting a response from the ISP whether they have changed anything but I think it unlikely.
So this leaves the following options for myself and other users:
1) The ISP is capping traffic to itunes. Other American sites are unaffected so it is not a country specific problem.
2) iTunes itself is denying a suitable level of service to users accessing the american store outside of the US based on IP address!
These are the only two options I can think of right now. I believe number 1 is unlikely knowing my ISP but I will add to the post if that proves to be correct.
If anyone has any more technical ideas why a normal ISP connection would be slow wheras a SSL tunnel direct to the states is faster I would be very interested to know and may help a lot of other people out who are outside the US and access the store.Hi spike_japan,

Can you enlighten me on how you bypassed your isp to connect straight to the anonymizer servers in the USA? I'm also using the iTunes store and for the past 2 weeks, i've been getting really slow downloads. I've been downloading a tv episode for over a week one - not one season, one episode. It says 80 hours remaining. So please help me out.

I'm running widows 7 and downloaded the app SwitchDraw and I cannot find a way to run it. This is my 1st app purchase so it may very well be something simple.
You won't be able to open it on a computer, if this is the correct app, Switchdraw, then you will need to install it onto an iPad - from the app's description page in the store
