Iweb and sub-domains - is this an example?

I am trying to build 1 web site that will have 4 subsections. For example, I will have a family site example - www.jones.com.
Then each person will have their own sub page - www.jones.com/bob, www.jones.com/mary, etc.
With in sub site, there will be pages called photos, movies, blog, etc. - but the same for all
How can I do this in iWeb? I have all the child sites built but want to upload it to a hosting company (godaddy but use .mac) Is this an example of a sub-domain? What is the best way to lay this out and is iweb capable of doing this?
Thanks in advance
jf

so if my URL is this: www.jones.com, I want to have a site:
www.jones.com/randompictures
There are two ways to accomplish what you are asking...one involves subdomains, one does not.
Putting the issue of subdomains aside for the moment, let me illustrate what you are doing currently...
You have a domain name: http://www.jones.com
And you have set it to forward to: http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/ (this is what you will need to do to get this method to work right)
So everyone who types http://www.jones.com will get forwarded to http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/publicsitename/pagename.html (this is your default publicly available site)
If you want a site that only certain people can get to if they know the specific address, like http://www.jones.com/randompictures , then all you have to do is to create a separate (new) site in iWeb called "randompictures" and upload that along with your public site.
The real web address for this site will be:
http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/randompictures/pagename.html
But since your domain name is mapped (forwarded) to the underlined portion, the visitors to this site would only have to type:
http://www.jones.com/randompictures
Does this make sense? This is probably the easiest way to do what you are wanting to do. It involves making the second private site in addition to your regular site that everyone can get to by typing http://www.jones.com . It does not involve using subdomains.
Subdomains can be used to provide the same kind of functionality, though. To explain, let me first dissect out a URL and tell you exactly what a subdomain is...
http://www.jones.com/randompictures/index.html
Looking at this URL, here are the parts...
http://- this tells the browser to look for and HTML file
www- this is the name of the subdomain
jones- this is the name of the domain (domain name)
com- this is the top level domain (TLD)
randompictures- this is a subdirectory (think: folder)
index.html- this is the name of the HTML file that is displayed
So you see, the subdomain is like a subsection of the main domain name... and oftentimes it is assumed to be "www" and typing in http://jones.com usually will resolve the "www" subdomain automatically.
A subdomain, like your domain name, can be forwarded to any other URL, just as you have forwarded your domain name to your iWeb URL. Therefore, an alternate solution to your wishes can go like this...
You have two separate sites made and uploaded with iWeb: publicsite (default) and randompictures
Your domain name is forwarded to your short iWeb URL http://web.mac.com/username , which automatically resolves to your default "publicsite" homepage.
Now you setup a subdomain at GoDaddy called "randompictures". You can then setup this subdomain to forward to http://web.mac.com/username/iWeb/randompictures/ which will lead to your private iWeb site. People "in the know" would access this private site by typing:
http://randompictures.jones.com
That's your subdomain at work! This method is slightly less easy than the first, but works just as well.
Here's what I do to get to the subdomain configuration page:
1. Go to http://www.godaddy.com
2. Login under "My Account" on the right side of the page
3. Select "My Domain Names" under the green "Domains" dropdown menu on the left side of the page.
4. Click directly on your domain name from the list provided
5. Under the Account information section, you will see a box titled "Total DNS Control" and inside the box you will see a link called "Manage Subdomains".
Let me know if you have any questions about any of this...

Two way transitive trusts are configured automatically when you create a child domain or tree root domain. You don't have to worry about site/subnet or replication part at least from trust perspective. But make sure site's names are unique in each domain.

  • IWeb and personal domain

Is it possible to create a website using iWeb and upload it to personal domain (www.mydomain.com) without Mobile Me?

    Yes, you can.
Sign up at a webhost, with or without a domainname, and publish.
Before you do, you can practice on your own computer :
    http://www.wyodor.net/Tutorials/iWebDemo/sFTP.html
And you don't upload to a personal domain. You upload to a server.
And browse this forum. It has been discussed several times a day every day since June last year.

  • I built a website, using iWeb.  I backed up daily with Time Machine and OS 10.6.  My HD crashed.  I replaced the HD and installed 10.5. But now I can't restore iWeb and my domain file. How do I restore my site files on the new drive?

I obviously dont know how to use this forum...my question to the community seems to be the truncated phrase in the title block above..you can scroll thru it to see my whole question....basiclly,.my question is:  How do I restore my iWeb domain files which are kept in  user>library>applicationssupport>iWeb>domain in my Time Machine date listings...to a newly installed disc.  I had a disk crash, removed the failed drive and installed another. I then installed OS 10.5 (I didn't have a copy of my 10.6). Now I'm having difficulty figuring out how to get the iWeb files from the Time Machine external drive used with the 10.6 to the new drive running 10.5...any help muich appreciated....!!
bob in St. Peters Nova Scotia...

Go to to your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in the Finder and then enter  Time Machine.  Go back to the last backup that has the domain file, select it and use the Restore button.

  • Webserver domains and sub-domains not loading correctly

I'm having a problem with my pages loading correctly on my Maverick server.
    www.example.com loads correctly
example.com loads to the website at the top of my virtual domain list.
Weird but happens on all my virtual sites...
    http://www.richard-bradley.com loads fine
http://richard-bradley.com loads to another virtual domain at the top of my list...?
    Any advice would be appreciated...

This sound like a DNS thing.
Whats the Primary Zone in your DNS? In the DNS config page click the cog at the boom to show All Records
I sound like the primary zone is www.richard-bradley.com and it needs to be richard-bradley.com
But can you confirm this for me to make sure I understand.
You have primary site www.example.com and anyone visiting it get served data "A"
You have a virtual site example.com and and you set it to serve data "B" but when someone visits they get data "A"
    Am I getting that right?

  • Back UP Old Version of iWeb and all Domain Files FIRST

Just copy it to a safe place - somewhere other than your Applications folder. This way you can still use it along with 2.0.
    Why?
If you're using a theme that was NOT created by Apple, you'll need it. iWeb 2.0 has changed dramatically and no third-party template will work in 2.0. They're all DOA.
DO NOT open your site in 2.0 if it uses a non-Apple template. If you do that, and you update it to 2.0, you'll never be able to edit it again in 1.1.2, you won't be able to add pages, etc, because the template doesn't exist for that version.
I have another thread going with more details but I did not want this information to get lost in that thread. Please be wise and read everything and then back up your stuff before upgrading and playing with the new version. It will save you endless suffering if you do.
I will post updates on this situation at my 11Mystics site as well. As soon as we know if it's possible to convert the themes or regenerate them, I'll let you know.

  • Difficulty using an Aperture Web gallery with Iweb and custom domain

I am not using a .Mac account. I do however, use Aperture to create web galleries. I cannot get Iweb to link to all my Aperture web galleries. Aperture web galleries create index.html files. When I link to a file called index.html nothing happens. Can someone please help. Thank you. Tom

You need to use the entire URL and have your folders already uploaded to your server.
Syntax would be something like this:
    http://myserver.com/foldername
Since index.html is default you can leave it out of the URL.
I don't use Aperture so I don't know the method it uses. I would suspect it allows you to name a folder for the files and inside it is the index.html file and maybe a folder of images and other support files.

  • Can use iweb and publish sites without a mobileme account?

I have a old imac and it died and I lost all of my websites and Im afraid that I cant republish the websites without a mobile me account… anyone know what I can do ?

When you 'lost your websites' do you mean you lost the 'Domain' file in your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder? iWeb keeps all its information there and if you do not have it you will have to recreate your site from scratch. If this is the case I would most strongly advise not using iWeb - it's not been sold or supported for some time now, and indeed v2 ('08) does not work with Mavericks: v3 may stop working on a future update. There are many other programs for making websites - Everweb is popular and is designed to be very like iWeb, with more facilities.
If you do have the Domain file then you can publish to any website hosting service as outlined by Old Toad. There is a more detailed description of the process for the two different versions here:
    http://wilmut.uk/missing2
However if you are going to use iWeb remember that as I said a future system upgrade may very well break it; and you would find it very difficult to update the site by editing the published pages in the absence of being able to use iWeb and the Domain file.

  • Mac and personal domain names

How to set up your iWeb and personal domain names, How do you get your iWeb DNS. tHANKS

Mac/iWeb and domainnames have nothing to do with each other.
Your domainname is related to your webserver. With or without iWeb.
And there is no such thing as an iWeb DNS.
Check where you have your webhosting and domainname registered.
And in case the message did not get across, MobileMe ends at the end of this month. And so does Personal Domain, which is a MMe feature.

  • IWeb and domain names 101

I know this material has been covered here before, but I'm having trouble putting the story together fully - sorry if this is repetitive, but:
I have a website up which I created in iWeb, and currently publish in iWeb using my Mobile Me account to host it. I assume that's how it's working anyway? I think the folders holding the site pictures etc are kept on my iDisk?
    I have two questions
    1) I want to purchase a simpler name for the site, and just work it so that everything is the same, but my site will now have a simple name, rather than the complex one it is assigned by iWeb (which uses my email address, etc etc)
    How do I do that?
    2) Is that the best way to do this, or are there benefits to having the site hosted by another service other than .Mac (or MobileMe - whatever it is porperly called these days.)
    Thanks!

    Please can you help.
I have two Mobile Me accounts, and I want to load a different personal domain on the second one to the first one. The first one is personal, and the second one is for a group practice. When I uploaded the pages to Mobile Me, it "assumed" that the pages intended for the second site were to be loaded to the first site under domain name 1. In fact, I want to get those pages under domain name 2. I have been to the domain provider's site and changed the CNAME so that it uploads under the second domain name. I assumed that I could have two separate domain names because I have paid two subs for Mobile Me. What I can't work out is how I can move the pages from the first account personal domain to the second account personal domain. Can anyone help please?

If I have two domains (a.com and b.com) with sub domains(a1.com and b1.com) with two way trust and I want them to point to a Windows DNS server. How should the Forward lookup zones and Reverse lookup zones be configured? In forward lookup

Do the sub domains need to be added? What about pointers? Do I add the IP address of a.com and b.com in reverse lookup zones.
A side question: When you create a Domain with dns AD intergrated the forward and reserve lookup are automatically created. You don't need to add the zone of the domain you just created but have to add zones of other domains.

Make each domain controller as a DNS server too. Reverse lookup zones & forwarders are not replicated automatically. You can create AD-Integrated reverse lookup zone & set the replication scope.
You can create AD-Integrated DNS zones in the parent/root domain, set the replication scope to the forest-wide & delegate the zones for handling request locally. Once you create AD-Integrated DNS zone & set the replication scope forest wide, all
the zones will appear automatically in each domain's DNS server.

  • IWeb 1.1(.1) and multiple Domain.sites

There are (still) a lot of references to Domain.sites resides in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, this is no longer true with iWeb 1.1(.1).
iWeb 1.1(.1) can handle multiple Domain.sites, and once you double click a Domain.sites outside of ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder is no longer needed (unless you double click the Domain.sites inside ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, again).
Once you double click a Domain.sites outside of ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, you can move iWeb folder out of ~/Library/Application Support folder, and iWeb WON'T create another ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
    huh?

iWeb 1.1.x multiple domains handling is quite low
key, and for a good reason. Although, iWeb 1.1.x can
handle multiple Domain.sites, however, there is no
way (that I know of) to create a fresh Domain.sites
    from iWeb.
Some one prove me wrong, please.
Hmmmmm, I AM able to create a new Domain.sites file using iWeb 1.1.1; see this Apple support article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303670
I've got a number of different sites that I had been keeping in different folders in a new folder that I named "Sites" that I kept where the default Domain.sites file was stored, i.e.,
    for "Site1": ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Sites/Site1/Domain.sites
    for "Site2": ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Sites/Site2/Domain.sites
    etc.
Prior to version 1.1.1, when I'd open one of the Domain.sites files, iWeb would automatically create a Domain.sites file in the ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, then when I was done making changes to that file, I'd have to copy it back into the subfolder. Now with version 1.1.1, iWeb does NOT create a new file but rather just uses the Domain.sites file from where it is opened and makes that the new default location. To create a new site, just move this folder containing the Domain.sites file that iWeb now uses as the default to a different location and start iWeb by clicking on the iWeb application: you'll then get a new site. If the last opened Domain.sites file was in the username/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, then moved to a different location, and then you open iWeb by clicking on the iWeb application, you will be prompted to either "Quit", "Create Domain…", or "Choose Domain…"; click "Create Domain…" and you'll then be asked to choose a location for a new Domain file; select a new location then iWeb opens with a new site.
    Hope I'm making sense.
