IWeb ftp and special characetrs on page names

I was having trouble publishing a site with iWeb via ftp. Testing the connection worked fine and publishing the site would work up to a point, and then give an error (there was an error publishing your site- try again later). I renamed the site on the ftp settings so that there were no special characters (:,-/ etc) and renamed the pages and eliminated these special characters. This seems to have fixed the issue. Anyone have a similar experience?

Been tring to upload a site using the new iWeb 09 FTP feature to our OS X server. The "test connection" went well, the upload appeared to go well, but when I went to "visit" the site i get File Not Found. I found where iWeb 09 put the site on the server (library/FTPServer/FTPRoot/). I found the index.html file and was able to access and view the site from a web browser (Open File).
Is there a setup issue on the server side to allow access to public when using iWeb 09 FTP feature?
We have been uploading this site to the server, and viewing via the web, with no problem using a 3rd party FTP software (Cyberduck) for a while now.
Any thoughts

  • IWeb '09 and creating an "Index" page for two separate sides of my website

I'm redesigning my website with iWeb '09 seeing that I've recently switched to Mac from being a life-long PC/Windows user. I'm not too web programming savvy so iWeb fits my needs as a very good program that redesigns my site very nicely (and quite inexpensively, as well).
My current incarnation of my website (http://www.jeffreykern.com) was designed by a professional web designer on Dreamweaver for PC a couple of years ago. Some time ago when I was trying to update my PC with XP SP 3 (bad idea as it turned out), my connection to my web hosting service got completely fouled up and I lost the ability to update the site and haven't updated my site since. Knowing that I was going to be switching to Mac (with my new Mac Pro) I never had the desire, or energy, to patch things up to update my site with my PC. Plus, I was in need of a redesign so I eventually got my site ready to go with iWeb 09. That's where I stand right now...
So, as you can see on my current site I have a main index page that splits up into the two sides of my life: the triathlete side and the writer side. I've already redesigned both sides of my site with iWeb, I'm ready to update it thru my web hosting via FTP and Transmit 3, but I cannot find how to create a main "Index" page on iWeb that will let me branch off into two different directions. By having that "Index" page intact I will be able to keep my domain of jeffreykern.com as it currently stands. I don't mind having to get two different domains for each of my two sides of my site but would like to avoid that extra step -- if, at all, possible.
Thanks in advance for your help,
    Jeff

Building three websites on three separate domain files would be my choice.
Its important to realize that you cannot have a page called "index" using iWeb because the associated index.html file will conflict with the one that iWeb creates.
As has been suggested, the first site would be one page. The site name would be jeffreykern.
This site will publish as jeffreykern_files and an index.html file. Inside this folder is another index.html file. This is the one your domain name will be directed at if you don't need an RSS feed.
If your server allows it, create a root folder on it called "jeffreykern" and upload the contents of the local folder to this and ignore the separate index.html file. Note that I said contents and not the folder itself.
A lot of servers require that you upload to a pre existing folder. In this case you will have to upload the index.html file and the jeffreykern _files folder.
The two other sites are named and published as writer and triathlete. The external index files of these two sites are renamed writer.html and triathlete.html.
These two files and their corresponding folders are uploaded to your root folder on the server after adding tags and optimizing.......
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/SearchEngines/SEO.html
Now you have a main (one page) site with two sub sites.
The domain name http://www.jeffreykern.com/ is directed at the index.html file so that when this is entered into the browser, the main page will appear.
The links to the two main sections, whether they be text and/or image, are created and selected as external hyperlinks.
    http://www.jeffreykern.com/triathlete/
    http://www.jeffreykern.com/writer/
Clicking these links will open the first page of their respective sites.
If you do the sensible thing and trash the iWeb default navigation to replace it with a custom one, you can include external hyperlinks to the landing page and the other site in this.
The website - iWeb for Musicians - is created like this and is built on 9 separate domain files for ease of updating and publishing. The whole site is tied together with a Main navigation to get to each section which has a Sub navigation to jump around that section.
    For more on navigation see.....

  • Image Capture and special characters in file names.

Hung up image capture yesterday: We tried to enter a date in the file name of the document we were scanning. It proceeded normally, but then did not save the file and image capture would not scan again until OS restarted.
Problem repeated until we discovered a slash in the file name box. Changed the file name and everything works now.
Software should either prevent user from entering special characters in the file name box, or properly handle the error and not hang up the application.

    Hi,
Would mind providing a screenshot about how your Content Query Web Part rendering in your environment?
In my environment, it displays the filename which contains periods:
I would suggest you create a new page and insert a Content Query Web Part to perform the test again.

  • Ftp  and special chars

I have a site which is user generated, and some of the files
that people upload contain special chars for example 'my*pic.jpg'
... I am trying to backup my server with dreamweaver ftp, however
it wont let me download files with chars like * in their names...
is there any way to override this in dreamweaver? thanks to any

Uh, this would be an invalid filename on most filesystems.
    The asterisk
    is usually a wildcard character.

Such files shouldn't exist at all. How were they uploaded?

  • Content Query Web Part and special characters in file names

    Hi All,
Is there an out-of-box way to display periods in a file name if I am displaying a document library files? I do not want to end up doing a custom item style if possible.
For example, file name is 8.5x11Letterhead.docx, 8.5x11Resume.pdf etc.  I do not want to display the file names as 85x11Letterhead.docx.
    Thanks

  • How does a JSP page remember a user and prints in every page name of user?

Hello, i'm working with JSPs and mysql.
I have a Login page where sm inserts data in the two fields:
    name, username.
i check if that user exists in the database.
if the user exists i would like in every jsp page to mention/appear his name.
As happens in this site [forums.sun.com] where it says "Welcome user" and
when you click on it you are transferred in your profile page.
How am i supposed to do that using JSP?
May sm post me an example or a link to study that particular matter?
    thanks, in advance!

  • IWeb, FTP and too many Macs

I have created a site using iWeb on my MacAir with the assets uploaded to an FTP server through e-noise. I now have a iMac and would like to make changes on the machine, but every time I open iWeb it only allows me to start a new site. I'd like to be able to make changes on my iMac (at home) and on the road (MacAir). Can anyone advise me on how I might go about this please.
    Many thanks
    Kieron

I use dropbox. I love it. It's free for up to 2GB of capacity. I'm editing my site from three different computers. It eliminates any confusion regarding which file was the last one edited, which machine it's on, etc. I keep my domain file in dropbox and keep an alias in the left sidebar of the finder window. So all I have to do to edit my site is double click the domain file alias in any finder window, no matter what computer I'm working on. The dropbox website also keeps backups of your files so in case you ever lose your work, you can retrieve a back up from DropBox.com.
One thing you need to be careful about is to not edit your file from two different computers at the same time, The file can become corrupted if you do this.

  • How to make page name and title change with AJAX driven site?

I am building a travel site. I am a fairly basic but longtime
DW user. I built the site in DW. I made a template and all pages
are then based off the template. I hired a programmer to do the
complicated hotel searching code. He says that he used AJAX and I
know also php (all the pages are whatever.php)
What I don't like and he says can not be changed, which there
must be a workaround for, is that, for example, a user will be on
the spahotels.php page. Or perhaps they are on the whatshot.php
page reading the latest article about jungle treehouse eco lodges.
So far so good, the name of the page is "spahotels.php" or
    "whatshot.php".
But, on each (and all) of the site pages we also have a hotel
search on the top left nav. So from any page, the user can do a
hotel search. The problem I have is that...once they do this....the
results they are given in the main window of the page, are totally
unrelated to spahotels or whatshot about jungle lodges...so if they
have now searched for tokyo business hotels, it looks ridiculous
and confusing that the page name says "spahotels.php" and the page
title says Find Great Spa Hotels.
My programmer says AJAX was the best way to do the hotel
search functionality (which I dont know anything about so if he
says so maybe so but I don't know) but he also says there is no way
to make the page name or title change to reflect what the user has
done on the left search function. Makes sense..they are clearly
    unrelated.
However...this is a terrible user experience in my opinion.
So...one idea he had was to find a javascript code that changes the
    page title/name.
Does anyone have some ideas of how to solve this issue?
The page (rough, we are still developing) is
    http://www.bluehippotravel.com/spahotels.php
Try doing a seach for something on the left nav hotel
search...and see what I mean...the name of the page stays
spahotels.php and the title stays Spa Hotels. I get it...I
think...why it does...but it looks stupid if you are looking for
something else in your search (which of course the user will be).
Any ideas??? Thank you so much in advance!!
    Laura

their is no out of box way to avoid this but you can change this in the Designer.

  • IWeb Domain and backing up

I want to ensure I have properly copied my iWeb Files to another hard drive for backup and know how to do that. Problem I have is that when I look in my iWeb folder it shows the Domain.sites2 file plus a folder under my name and within the folder sub folders for all my pages except they are not up to date with the names I now use and one of the page names is not there.
What I can't remember is if that breakdown of pages has been copied by me from somewhere else and that everything is just contained within the Domain.sites2 file?
    Thanks
    Douglas

The domain file in Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb contains all the data for your website and is the file that you need to backup.
The other folder is probably published files that usually would go into the Sites folder in your Home folder. These files are of no value - especially if they are outdated - as you can't load them into iWeb.

  • Publishing w/FTP and spaces in file names

I read that if I wanted to build a site in iWeb, and then publish to a 'non .mac' server (via FTP) that I'd have to make sure that all of my file and page names didn't have any spaces or special characters in them.
I went thru all of my files and fixed all of the names, and then re-imported/re-linked using all of the new names.
When I 'publish to file' though, several of the files revert back to the old names in the newly published folder.
Anyone have any ideas? Is there a cache, or something, in iWeb that might be causing this?
    Thanks, in advance...

did you get it fixed? because i had the same thing happen to me. what i did was,
    -open your site on iweb
    -click on the inspector button
-click on the metrics tab on it(thats second from the right, looks like a little ruler).
-click on a photo or a graphic. (it will show you the file name in the file info box).
-for any of the files that have spaces in them opened up a new finder window and go directly to that file.
-click on the file name and change it so that it has no spaces
-now draged it directly to the place holder on iweb.
-the file name should changed in the inspector box.
-then save it and re-publish it to a folder. in the folder you can look and see if it changed.
I had to do this with almost all my files. there might be a faster way but this worked for me
    hope this helps.

  • Independent Servers?: Publishing and page names with spaces

Hello I am hoping someone who has published their site to server independent of .mac could tell me how they managed to name their pages with spaces without publishing problems. I have read here that you have to use an underscore or something similar to name your pages....Eck....I am making a site for my mother's business and I would prefer to use page names like 'about our service' instead of 'aboutourservice'. And I have seen that some people have managed this. Can any kind souls help?
    Thanks!

DJ.... I publish my site to FOLDER first, then upload
it to my server using FETCH FTP. It loads fine and
doesn't have trouble with the menu spaces and such.
Not sure what everyone else is saying about that, but
it's not an issue. I use .Mac for my podcasts, and
iWeb at DreamHost for my internet site.
Jim -- what's your url? I'm wondering if there are some hosts which automatically replace spaces in uploaded files. Normally you just can't upload them. Or maybe Fetch is doing it for you. Would be useful to know.

  • Can I stop iWeb from putting a page name at the top?

I don't want page names across the top in iWeb. I have a list of hyperlinked icons on the side for that.
Can anyone tell me how to stop iWeb from putting the page name on the page?
    Thanks.

The script is for the text in the browser title bar.
The title is taken from the large textbox at the top of each webpage.
If that box is missing or empty, iWeb uses a next textbox for the title.
If that is missing too, the pagename is used for the title.
If you want the title in the titlebar but not the large textbox on your page, select the textbox, do Cm-T and drag the font-size slider to the bottom.
Then click the color next to the T-icon and drag that opacity slider to the left (0).
Then resize the textbox to it minimun size and drag it out of view. And don't forget you did.
But I think the OP means the navigation links at the top.

  • Iweb  FTP,Printing probems with Iweb .Pages to Web

I feel like writing Steve Jobs.Problems -I had Iweb 08 , upgraded to Iweb09 because of the press how FTP was solved. I cannot upload to my server. I have spent hours talking to Apple Care reps.I have tried several FTP softwares other than Iweb. One rep told me they do have a problem with FTP out of Iweb to Microsoft base servers.Solution given and tried - first publish to a folder on the desktop and burn a cd for the host provider.Does not work. Next publish to documents and burn a CD and still garbage on the CD for my host provider. I have images and get the message"can't create the file shapeimage- 2png and the results all my images that are referenced as Fig 1 and so on well the figures get place all over and not in the proper location on all the CD burnt. So I cannot publish to the host. Second as of today and after two hours talking to Apple Care with Iweb, I have lessons as lesson 1 2 3 and so on. Well the lessons show up in full in view , but when i go to print if the lesson is 15 pages it will only show 9 in the preview print window and only print 9 pages but viewing the lesson in Iweb all pages show up as all 15. I tried all the recommendations from Apple Care . They do not know why the problem exist. They said maybe with Iweb 09 they limit how many pages you can have in a text box? They have no written notes that this is the case though. I think the problem has to do with something related to in preview it shows the pages as being PDF now when it scroll through the preview showing the pages and maybe this somehow as a default will not allow printing all pages. So I have 15 pages to print out in Iweb and when I go to print it previews and stops at page 9, but the remaining pages still there to view in Iweb. Page allows me to send the info in Iweb out now but it excludes the images so sort of messy. It did not allow this s before . I upgraded to Iweb 09 and have Pages 08, and bet if I install Pages 09 I wont be able to send anything from Iweb to Pages. They do allow you to send information from Pages to Iweb so why not the reverse? My last though is to send from Iweb to Pages, do the massive amount of images again but in Pages and then can I send this as PDF to a Microsoft server and get my website up and running. The problem is not my host it is Apple. FTP does not work ? I have intel chips . Any way to exit Iweb to go to a Microsoft server some clever way here? The monster problem with Iweb is that if you want even a small business everyone has to have the same password so if you want access limited to maybe paying subscribers forget it . Everyone has to be given the same password access so they can pass the password around and every is there for free. Anyone know of a tag on product to handle E-mail password allocation instead of hiring a heavy PHP programmer?. Still going to have a host out of Iweb and this seems impossible. So from what I can make out, your problems are:
    1. Uploading to FTP/publishing
    2. Printing
    3. iWeb and Pages use
    4. Password protection in iWeb
Ok, so for a website you don't want to be burning things to CD or converting a whole site into PDF format. You want individual webpages with proper formats. There's little point in exporting from iWeb to Pages because if you want the webpage info on paper, you print it. If you want to send it to someone, you send them your webpage address. (However, copying from Pages to iWeb is useful for easy publishing from existing documents or drafts).
Your print preview may be a problem, but as long as everything's printed it doesn't make any difference? Not sure what you're trying to say here, and not sure why you're printing webpages anyway? You can take screenshots of your webpage if that's easier.
It sounds like you are trying to cram far too much information in. Try uploading a very simple page with a couple of lines of text via FTP and see if that works. Which webhost are you using, or are you doing it all on an internal server? If you are, I recommend trying to use the web to upload something just to check.
iWeb isn't designed for businesses, and in fact is against Apple's terms of service. It sounds like you really need to employ someone who knows what they're doing. If you don't want to spend the money on a programmer, try hiring a couple of university students studying business/IT, or at least have a temp to consult and tell you what you need. It sounds like you've got yourself into a real tangle.

  • Index problems with iweb 09 and ftp uploads

    Hi,
after several issues with the site i eventually re-built and published with iweb 09's built in ftp.
The problem i have is that the published site goes in a folder called Site on my server but the index page that redirects to the welcome.html file doesn't direct it to inside the site folder. This means when i navigate to the site it comes up as welcome.html not found on this server.
I've resorted to filezilla again as when i publish to a local folder and upload it works ok.
I still want to resolve this as the iweb ftp will publish just the canges so is loads quicker.
I imagine the only way to resolve this is to change the settings in the iweb site settings page.
does anyone know if i need to tell iweb a different path other than the server url.
    EG; my url is www.thepaddyproject.co.uk
iweb put the site on the server ok (www.thepaddyproject.co.uk/Site
the index page needs to redirect to www.thepaddyproject.co.uk/Site/Welcome.html
    any help appreciated

  • Iweb 09 and posting to your own domain name -- how does it work?

    Dear Apple geniuses,
What I always hated about iWeb was the long web address -- I am thinking about buying 09 and a domain name so I can have a simple address. (I am on iLife 07 now) But I am not exactly sure how it works can you help me!
Question 1. Once I get the domain name for example, www.christine.com, and post my iwebsite to it will people be see it just by typing in www.christine.com? (I won't have to add anything else to the address).
Question 2. Can you suggest a domain registar that works well with iWeb (I read something about needing one that will allow a setting for CNAME).
Question 3. Will this website come up in google searches?
Question 4. I plan to use the widget to have youtube video on my website because I want the video to play quickly so people don't have to wait for it to load-- will all of that work if I post to my own domain?
Thanks and sorry for my computer stupidity!

    1. No, you don't have to add anything to the address and people should be able to get to your site by either typing in http://yourdomain.com or http://www.yourdomain.com.
    2. GoDaddy are very good and I have a domain name registered with them. Also, Network Solutions too. You only need a registrar/host that provides CNAME forwarding if you are intending to purchase a MobileMe account and publish your site to MME. However, you do not need to do this to be able to use iWeb. You can purchase your domain name, plus a Linux hosting option from GoDaddy and you can then upload your site directly to your hosting space using a dedicated ftp program such as Cyberduck.
    3. Your site will come up in Google Searches yes, but you need to notify them that your site exists first.
    4. Posting YouTube on your site will work if you publish to MobileMe and upload directly to your server. If you want quick loading, however, I would suggest that you upload directly to your server as at times MobileMe is notoriously slow. I upload directly, as I have business site and I wanted faster loading speeds that MME could not give me.
Your version of iLife will be 06 and not 07 - as far as I am aware that does not exist, it went 06, 08 and now 09.
