IWeb, Joomla, Expression Web 2.0...sooooo confused

Hi all,
First I am new to website development...king of the newbies I had my website done and the guy used Joomla (open source). So I have been playing with it and it seems pretty straightforward. I then had lunch with a friend and he said he did his in iWeb. I googled iWeb reviews and saw it was criticised because it made sites that were not very searchable. I am going to create a web site for another business and it needs to be searchable...highly searchable (or rather the ability to make it that way via coding, etc...).
My question is can iWeb be made more searchable by spiders, etc...? Also, my friend got an extra copy of MicroSoft Expressions Web 2.0 for his birthday and doesn't need it. He has offered to sell it to me for peanuts. Should I just go with that (I work on both PCs and MAC) and forget about iWeb or Joomla?
Thanks in advance

Joomla is a content management system running on the server. It is operating system indipendent (does not matter if you are using win or osX).
But your server has to support php and mysql.
If you are a web development noob as you say, I would stick with iweb, it is a breeze to use.
If you want to dig a little deeper in webdesign check out joomla (it is free). It is a great and extremely powerful content management system (CMS)!
The concept of joomla (and any other CMS) is to divide content from design. So whenever you want to give your site a different look you simply change the so called template. All your texts, galleries etc. stay untouched as they are stored in a sql database. Only the layout and colors will change.
Many web space providers offer one click installations of joomla, so getting started is not that hard.
As development environment I recommend aptana studio (also free).
It can be seen as the oposit to iweb since it is a pure code environment but has many little helpers making it easy to edit Html java script and so on templates.
It offers explenations for all commands in a website code and has extensive auto completion faetures that offer you possibilities for the next command.
check it out, but make shure to learn the basics of html first, else it will be very frustrating.

I hope this helps.

  • Transferring iWeb site to school computer running Expression Web

I have been told by my school system's tech person that I can transfer my iWeb pages to the school site on the school computer(running Expression Web) by loading it onto a removable storage drive and bringing it in..any tips would be great..her instructions weren't very clear...would love to be able to use what I have created on iWeb and simply connect it to the school's server via that method...she says she does it all the time so I know it works, just need to know what to copy onto my portable drive...thanks!!!!

  • HT1338 How can I get a copy of iWeb or a web building software like Iweb

How can I get a copy of iWeb or a web building software like Iweb

You can look on eBay, amazon.com, or Google search for the iLife boxed set that contains iWeb. If you just want any web building tool you can take a look at Sandvox 2.5.6, RapidWeaver 5.2.2, Freeway Pro, Coda, Freeway Express, or KompoZer as a starting set.

  • I am running 10.6.8 and using iweb for my web site. After several SEO analysis they all indicate I need H1-6 header tags. After looking at the source code I see there are none in iweb. Is it necessary to add? If so, how do I add H Tags to iweb.

I am running 10.6.8 and using iweb for my web site. After several SEO analysis they all indicate I need H1-6 header tags. After looking at the source code I see there are none in iweb. Are they necessary to add?  Why would one add these tags and how do I add H Tags to iweb? And are there examples to look at? I am slowly learning about simple web design and assumed that iweb was stand alone without having to write code. Is this one of the reasons iweb is no longer supported? Thanks for looking at this!

A simple text page like this:
    Heading
        sub heading
              text paragraph ....
Is traditionally represented by html tags like:
    <h1>Heading</h1>
         <h2>sub heading</h2>
              <p>text paragraph ... </p>
I would guess that the use of h1-h6 tags helps search engines to understand the structure of a page as the tags imply a certain structure.
This can be compared to more generic tags like <div> that could represent any kind of content - and may be what iWeb uses (you'll have to check yourself).
I would generally recommend that you use some kind of up to date blog/site building tool, perhaps Wordpress or Squarespace (I haven't used either one myself) that support current web technologies - this should reduce your SEO issues and make it easier to properly support mobile/tablet users.

  • In Expression Web 4 get this error: "Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (c) isn't associated with any program."

This is a recent problem. Added CSS3Draft and HTML 4.01 Transitional, from the original CSS2.1 and HTML 1.0 Transitional. Since then, can still view my Expression Web 4 website in IE9, but Firefox no longer will view site. Instead I get the error mentioned above. Expression Forum site, and CoffeeCup forum site both say this is problem with Firefox, that others have also been having. They say, Firefox can't see the site on my drive, since the address is not same as it would be if site was up on a server. Can you help?

  • Using Catalyst with MS Expression Web

I'm trying out Catalyst and found it easy to use and quickly created a .swf with an embedded video.  Where I'm having difficulties is using the .swf in a website created with Expression Web.  I've made sure I've included all of the files in the "deploy-to-web" folder, but the video will not play on a website.  It works when using the files in the "run local" folder, but not online.
I've used other .swf files (created elsewhere) that have worked fine in the Expression Web site.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I'm not familiar with Expression Web, but SWFs created in Catalyst will work regardless of what applications you use to edit your HTML.
If you are in the process of developing the site, and you run it on your local machine, you must use the files in the run-local folder - otherwise you will get errors.
If you have deployed the site, and you have the SWFs on the web server, you must use the files in the deploy-to-web folder - otherwise you will get errors.
What exactly do you mean by "the video will not play"? What do you see happening when you load the site?

Well that didn't really tell us anything.
But we can't help you with your computer. We're just users, with no tech support resources. Expression Web is just a program, like any other; there's nothing special. You just have to install it after you download it.

  • New employer needs website update. Upgrade of Microsoft Expression Web or use WordPress?

I have to update my new employer's outdated drab website.  I haven’t developed a website since Microsoft Expression Web in 2011.  This is a small company of 10.  They want no bells/whistles, just a static site.
Do I need to upgrade my Microsoft Windows Expressions, and if so, to what in order to accommodate all the new devices everybody's using.  An IT friend told me to use WordPress, where I can get templates that will scale appropriately
for other devices.  Any advice out there would sure help.

Wordpress and EW are apples and oranges.  Both are fruits, but do they need a content management system and/or blog, or not?   If it's a simple site you will be developing, you can use EW.  (It doesn't matter which version, but
the latest EW4 is completely free.)  You can create a responsive site in EW, which is what you need for a site that is flexible across device sizes.  Much as you can find already built Wordpress themes that are responsive, you can find templates
for responsive websites that you can use in EW.   A quick google search brings up many results.  Clicking on one randomly (completely randomly - I've not used this and am not promoting it):
http://www.rtbwizards.com/  and an example template preview is at:
http://www.rtbwizards.com/webs/4551/two-columnA.html  Shrink your browser window to narrow and watch what happens to the content and to the menu at the top of the page.   That
template is not free, but it is very cheap.    ...And so on.

  • How do I convert a Expression Web template into Dreamweaver CC?

Just got the Adobe CC subscription they said I could convert an Expression Web site template to Dreamweaver?  It has a file master.dwt that has the common header, footer and menu

Thanks, Dick - that helps. Save this code into the Templates folder at the root of the site. Name the saved file with a *.dwt extension. Let me know when you've done that and I'll tell you what to do next.

  • Is there a way to import existing front page website to expression web?

My Husband can't do any programming. He can do his website with his old FrontPage only.
However we now have Windows 7 on a new 64 bit system and front page 2000 isn't working properly.
Is there any way to import his Front Page web into Expression Web easily? Or is there a later version of Front Page that would work on Windows 7 64 bit?

What you do is make a copy of your current website. Then make sure that you are not using any shared borders. Be aware that the only webbot still supported in "include files" because EW will handle that in the local copy and update the contents
when you save then publish pages. If you are using FPSE to publish you may want to find out how to use FTP because if your host hasn't already discontinued them they will be doing so since they were discontinued in 2005.
Once you have made sure that you aren't using shared borders make another copy on flash drive, usb, dvd or home network to your new computer. Then simply open the folder you have copied using Site > Open Site and navigating to the location of the website
folder. You can then enable meta data to keep track of changes. If you husband is used to FrontPage 2000 there will be a learning curve. Had he been using FP 2003 it wouldn't be as great since it supported DWTs. If you go to
http://by-expression.com/page/EW-Video-Basic-Website-tutorial and download the asset file then work along with the tutorial to learn how to use Expression Web. The tutorial was created
with people migrating from FrontPage in mind. It does use version 2 instead of the current v4 but at the basic level the only real difference between the two is in the interface where all site functions have been moved to the Site from the File menu so you
don't do File > New > Website but Site > New Site. There are other tutorials on the site and in the resources sticky at the top of this forum to help in the transition. Frankly, I think EW is easier to use properly than FP was.

  • What's supposed to be the new expression web?

Which one of the 50 different things the expression web page links to is for creating web pages? Do I need it over expression web 4 if I only plan
on making a simple site simliar to http://superbad.com/ ?

Your question is not clear. 50 what different things?   The last version of Expression Web is version 4, and the last release of version 4 is the completely free version. If you are asking if you can create a website with EW4 - well, obviously,
yes. That's its purpose.  The type of website is up to you: you need to know HTML and CSS at a minimum, and any scripting languages needed for dynamic effects or interactions if you want any.
