J2ME Canvas and Form Objects

I am currently in the process of converting an existing MIDP application which uses the standard high-level UI to implement menus and form objects.
I am converting this to use the low-level UI with canvases to make the application look far more professional. There seem to be no decent tutorials realting to using the canvas to with relation to menus or user input.
Is it possible to add the standard TextField and ChoiceGroup types into a canvas? If not, how are these implemented in existing MIDP applications that clearly use a canvas.
Thanks for any help that you might be able to give,
Dave

umm abit of athread revivial but it seems that using j2me polish is more hard work than using standard j2me. This is because you need to know abit of xml and css to take full advantage of j2me polish.
still is that the only way to create a form in a canvas?

Hi, i wanna use input box with canvas. As i googled it is not possible. It says i have to write my own inputbox.
First question: is there another way use inputbox with canvas?
Second: Can i use canvas and form together. Can i draw something with canvas on half of screen, can i put a form on another part?

Lets make clear my problem.
I have letters in square and i am changing square's background in my code. It is easy to make with canvas. But i need an InputBox under the letters, it is a bit hard for me to draw it with canvas. You mean you have problems making it editable, right? Because I can't imagine having problems with drawing some background under the letters. Or perhaps you should define what exactly do you mean by "InputBox".
I thought to use form. When i use StringItem for letters i can not change their backgrounds (i dont know if it is possible)
İ tried to use ImageItem for letters. I made each of letters image. When i ll change their background i am putting another letter image on the other letter image which has different background. But i am not sure if it ll be problem about performance.
Any idea??Do I understand it correctly that you tried to simulate a TextField (which is an already available Item) using ImageItems only to have some background color under the text?
I don't know what application are you writing, but what's wrong with a simple TextField? If you're using Canvas for the rest of your application and sometimes you need some text input, just switch to a Form, let the user enter the data and switch back.
If you don't like the look of the high level GUI, implement your own TextField usable with Canvas. But trying to bend a Form like you described is just... odd.

• Question about documenting process maps and form object properties

Does the new version of Workbench have a tool that allows us to print a report showing the properties of the object used in a form template or process map? For example... showing all of the properties like fonts, size, patterns, defaults, whether or not a field is required, etc...? I am also checking to see if this capability has been added to Workbench for Process Maps?

No it does not but there is a blog entry by John Briinkman that will analyze your form template and give you some of that information. Here is a link to the blog entry:

• Clear canvas and not form

Hi,
I am having 2 canvas both content canvas in one form.
There are lov dropdowns to get the values and when queried we get result set in plsql table type.
Both the canvas are identical and value from result set of one canvas get populate on the other canvas.(same lov selected values)
can anybody tell how to clear the second canvas without exiting from the canvas so that if i want to select new lov i can be able to do that?
what trigger can i use to clear only the values of the lov on the sceond canvas and not the whole form(like we use clear_form).
Thanks,
Mandar.

canvas is not something which holds data. canvas holds items. you can either clear item or clear block or clear whole form to clear the data, but saying something like clear canvas is different. one canvas can hold data of 2-3 (or may be more) different blocks. you need to specifically check which item/block you want to clear and then clear it, either using clear_block or clear_item or may be manually assigning NULL value to each individual item. but there is nothing called clear_canvas.

• Displaying tab page canvas on content canvas in Forms 6i

Forms [32 Bit] Version 6.0.8.8.0 (Production)
I have an existing form which has multiple canvases and there are couple of fields on Content canvas and then on the same content a Tab canvas is layed out. I can see both canvases in same layout editor and select and move the tab canvas.
But when I create a new form and want to layout a tab canvas on top of content, it appears in a separate layout editor window on design time.
I want it like below:
-----------content--------------------

TabPag1     TabPage2

-------------content------------------How can I create it so that it appears in same layout editor window at design time and appears in same window like one canvas on runtime.

In order for the Tabbed Canvas to appear on the Content Canvas in the Layout Editor, you have to actually draw the Tabbed Canvas on the Content Canvas; eg: open your content canvas in the layout editor, click on the tabbed canvas toolbar button and then draw it on your content canvas. If you create the Tabbed Canvas object through the Object Navigator and then set the properties so it would display on the content canvas - it won't be visible on the content canvas with the layout editor.
This is a bit of a quirk in the Forms Builder and they haven't corrected this in any of the newer versions of Forms yet. :-(
Hope this helps,

• Attach a form objects to another form

Hi, excuse me if my question is evident for you, i am a little new with oracle form,
i want to know if it is possible to attach a form objects to another form and how to do that. Thanks for your help.
Edited by: Tabit7 on Apr 1, 2011 11:37 AM

You cannot attatch a whole form (.fmb) to you form but you can subclass blocks canvas for example.
open your form A and B
in your reference form A select the block you want to have in form B (subclassed) and select and drag it to B.
You will have a popup saying "do you want to copy the object ir subclass it ?" choose sublass and you are ready...
Do the same with canvas.
but PAY ATTENTION !!!! this method seems very useful if you have let say a identical master block for different forms.
but you have to handle it with precautions as every changes made in form A will be reflected to all your sub-classed forms B, B1, B2 .... and could cause you designs problems
if for example you master form A width change to something larger than one of you B forms.
Hope this helps

• DIFFERRENCE BETWEEN CANVAS AND VIEWS

Hi,
<b>WebDynpro</b> is a highly declarative, tool-based programming model. It minimizes platform-dependent "plumbing" code for building UIs and maximizes declarative metadata describing huge portions of a typical application in a platform-independent way.
Web Dynpro follows a "top-down" approach in order to consistently support multiple runtime platforms.
In Web Dynpro you just do drag & drop the UI components.
Portal components has followed a "bottom-up", programming-driven approach to Web development.
<b>Webdynpro</b> is used when requirements ask for a prototype using minimal time n effort.
Highly skilled programmers are not necessary to write a webdynpro application
It uses dynamic controls without reloading the page.
<b>The Portal Development Kit (PDK)</b> provides documentation and examples with source code to demonstrate how to develop portal applications and portal content for the SAP NetWeaver Portal using the SAP NetWeaver Developer Studio.
PDK includes coding examples on the following topics:
*Creating Portal Components and Portal Services
*Portal Profiles
*Resources
*Internationalization
*Portal Beans
*Page Builder
*EPCF
*Application Integrator
*Connector Framework
*Portal Navigation
*Object Based Navigation
*Transformation Service
*User Management
PDK is for deployment for portal application, has very good documentation of portal development, contains sample application, Java Docs for all the apis for portal and KM and plugins for eclipse(which you don't need if you are using NWDS). It is basically a nice help for developer along with an iviews for uploading par and testing them.
In EP 6.0 it is just business package that you import to your portal. This will then give a "java development" role in portal which can be assigned to users. The role will then create a tab called "Java Development" in the top navigation and click on it you can see all the contents underneath.

• Difference b/w DATA TYPE and DATA OBJECT & differences b/w TYPE and LIKE

hai
can any one say the differences between Data type and Data Object.
And also differences between TYPE and LIKE
thanks
Gani

hi,
_Data Types and Data Objects_
Programs work with local program data – that is, with byte sequences in the working memory. Byte sequences that belong together are called fields and are characterized by a length, an identity (name), and – as a further attribute – by a data type. All programming languages have a concept that describes how the contents of a field are interpreted according to the data type.
In the ABAP type concept, fields are called data objects. Each data object is thus an instance of an abstract data type. There are separate name spaces for data objects and data types. This means that a name can be the name of a data object as well as the name of a data type simultaneously.
Data Types
As well as occurring as attributes of a data object, data types can also be defined independently. You can then use them later on in conjunction with a data object. The definition of a user-defined data type is based on a set of predefined elementary data types. You can define data types either locally in the declaration part of a program using the TYPESstatement) or globally in the ABAP Dictionary. You can use your own data types to declare data objects or to check the types of parameters in generic operations.
All programming languages distinguish between various types of data with various uses, such as ….. type data for storing or displaying values and numerical data for calculations. The attributes in question are described using data types. You can define, for example, how data is stored in the repository, and how the ABAP statements work with the data.
Data types can be divided into elementary, reference, and complex types.
a. Elementary Types
These are data types of fixed or variable length that are not made up of other types.
The difference between variable length data types and fixed length data types is that the length and the memory space required by data objects of variable length data types can change dynamically during runtime, and that these data types cannot be defined irreversibly while the data object is being declared.
Predefined and User-Defined Elementary Data Types
You can also define your own elementary data types in ABAP using the TYPES statement. You base these on the predefined data types. This determines all of the technical attributes of the new data type. For example, you could define a data type P_2 with two decimal places, based on the predefined data type P. You could then use this new type in your data declarations.
b.  Reference Types
Reference types are deep data types that describe reference variables, that is, data objects that contain references. A reference variable can be defined as a component of a complex data object such as a structure or internal table as well as a single field.
c. Complex Data Types
Complex data types are made up of other data types. A distinction is made here between structured types and table types.
Data Objects
Data objects are the physical units with which ABAP statements work at runtime. The contents of a data object occupy memory space in the program. ABAP statements access these contents by addressing the name of the data object and interpret them according to the data type.. For example, statements can write the contents of data objects in lists or in the database, they can pass them to and receive them from routines, they can change them by assigning new values, and they can compare them in logical expressions.
Each ABAP data object has a set of technical attributes, which are fully defined at all times when an ABAP program is running (field length, number of decimal places, and data type). You declare data objects either statically in the declaration part of an ABAP program (the most important statement for this is DATA), or dynamically at runtime (for example, when you call procedures). As well as fields in the memory area of the program, the program also treats literals like data objects.
A data object is a part of the repository whose content can be addressed and interpreted by the program. All data objects must be declared in the ABAP program and are not persistent, meaning that they only exist while the program is being executed. Before you can process persistent data (such as data from a database table or from a sequential file), you must read it into data objects first. Conversely, if you want to retain the contents of a data object beyond the end of the program, you must save it in a persistent form.
Declaring Data Objects
Apart from the interface parameters of procedures, you declare all of the data objects in an ABAP program or procedure in its declaration part. These declarative statements establish the data type of the object, along with any missing technical attributes. This takes place before the program is actually executed. The technical attributes can then be queried while the program is running.
The interface parameters of procedures are generated as local data objects, but only when the procedure is actually called. You can define the technical attributes of the interface parameters in the procedure itself. If you do not, they adopt the attributes of the parameters from which they receive their values.
ABAP contains the following kinds of data objects:
a.  Literals
Literals are not created by declarative statements. Instead, they exist in the program source code. Like all data objects, they have fixed technical attributes (field length, number of decimal places, data type), but no name. They are therefore referred to as unnamed data objects.
b.  Named Data Objects
Data objects that have a name that you can use to address the ABAP program are known as named objects. These can be objects of various types, including text symbols, variables and constants.
Text symbols are pointers to texts in the text pool of the ABAP program. When the program starts, the corresponding data objects are generated from the texts stored in the text pool. They can be addressed using the name of the text symbol.
Variables are data objects whose contents can be changed using ABAP statements. You declare variables using the DATA, CLASS-DATA, STATICS, PARAMETERS, SELECT-OPTIONS, and RANGESstatements.
Constants are data objects whose contents cannot be changed. You declare constants using the CONSTANTSstatement.
c.  Anonymous Data  Objects
Data objects that cannot be addressed using a name are known as anonymous data objects. They are created using the CREATE DATAstatement and can be addressed using reference variables.
d.  System-Defined Data Objects
System-defined data objects do not have to be declared explicitly - they are always available at runtime.
e.  Interface Work Areas
Interface work areas are special variables that serve as interfaces between programs, screens, and logical databases. You declare interface work areas using the TABLES and NODESstatements.
What is the difference between Type and Like?
Answer1:
TYPE, you assign datatype directly to the data object while declaring.
LIKE,you assign the datatype of another object to the declaring data object. The datatype is referenced indirectly.
Answer2:
Type is a keyword used to refer to a data type whereas Like is a keyword used to copy the existing properties of already existing data object.
Answer3:
type refers the existing data type
like refers the existing data object
reward if useful

• Newbie question about entity and view objects

Hi everyone,
My first ADF application in JDeveloper is off to a difficult start. Having come from a forms background, I know that it is necessary avoid using post-query type lookups in order to have full filtering using F11/Ctrl+F11. This means creating an CRUDable view and getting as much of the lookup data as possible into the view without losing the ability to modify the data. In JDeveloper, I do not know how to build my data model to support that. My thought was to start with a robust updateable view as my main CRUD EO and then create a VO on top of that with additional EOs or VOs. But, I have found that I cannot add VOs to another VO. However, if I link the VOs then I have a master-detail which will not work for me.
For example, I have two joins to CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V shown in the queries below and need to have that show in the table displaying the CRUD VO’s data. It seemed that the best way to do this is to create a CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V entity object and view object. The view object would have two parameters, P_INSTANCE_ID and P_ATTRIBUTE name. Both the building and the unit are needed on the same record, and this is not a master-detail even though it might look that way. (A master-detail data control will not work for me because I need all this data to appear on the same line in the table.) So, I need help figuring out the best way to link these to the main (CRUD) view; I want as much of this data as possible to be filterable.
select
cieav.attribute_value
from
csi_inst_extend_attrib_v cieav
where cieav.instance_id = p_instance_id
and cieav.attribute_code = 'BUILDING NAME'
select
cieav.attribute_value
from
csi_inst_extend_attrib_v cieav
where cieav.instance_id = p_instance_id
and cieav.attribute_code = 'UNIT NAME'
Ultimately, I need to display a ton of data in each record displayed in the UI table, so a ton of joins will be needed. And, I need to be able to add records using the UI table also.
James

Hi Alejandro,
Sorry if I caused confusion with my first post. What I had in mind assumed that I could have a single CSI_INST_EXTEND_ATTRIB_V EO with a BuildingVO and UnitVO on top of it. So, I wrote the queries individually to show how I would invoke each view. When I realized that confused the issue, I rewrote the query to explain things better.
Now having seen your 2 queries. You need to create 2 EO. One for each table. Then create an association between the 2 aeO (this will be the join you are talking about). Then, you need to create a VO based on one of the EO and after you can modify and add the second EO (in here you select the join type).
After your done with this, youll have 1 VO that supports CRUD in both tables.
There were three tables in the query: CIEAV_BUILDING, CIEAV_UNIT, and T -- the main CRUD table. When you say that I should create two EOs, do you mean that they are to be for CIEAV_BUILDING and CIEAV_UNIT? Or, CIEAV and T? Assuming CIEAV and T, that sounds like it would allow me to show my building or unit on the record but not both.
By the way, everything is a reference except for the main CRUD table.
Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your help (and patience).
