Japanese iPhone French language auto-correct

Hi,
I use an iPhone5 in Japan and I am very happy to be able to use a French keyboard (me being French and all...) but it seems there is no proper dictionary behind the auto-correct so that almost every word appears as misspelled.
Is it possible to download a French dictionary of some sort?

No, there is nothing a user can add to the autocorrect feature of an iOS device.  You may be able to train the way it works by rejecting its suggestions or using the keyboard shortcut feature.
There is a French reference dictionary for finding definitions of words, but it doesn't relate to the autocorrect.

Is it possible to add the predictive word list like that of the android keyboard to the iphone.

(the word list/bar where it says monkey)
So that the iphone keyboard show a list of words to choose from when typing.
Or does anyone know an app which can do this

Apple felt it better (and I agree with their design choice) to have iPhone auto-correct to the word that is the closet match to what you're typing and if it's wrong make you ignore the auto correction...as said above, iPhone will learn your short hand or abbreviations over time and then begin to auto correct to them
There is no feature that will pop up several word choices and allow you to choose and no App I know of in the App store either...
It's a matter of personal preference but I wouldn't like having to choose, I like the auto correct and me ignoring if I don't like it...to each their own...

  • Auto-correction differences between iOS versions

To make a long story short, my location is Icelandic and I use the Icelandic keyboard provided by Apple on my iPhone 3GS. Back when I was on iOS 3.x the iPhone built up a dictionary and offered to correct my spelling of Icelandic words.  Very convenient.  But when I upgraded to 4.0 this capability disappeared and hasn't come back.  And still hasn't come back either in the GM release of iOS5.  My iPhone still offers auto-correct for the English keyboard but not my own language like it did before.  Does anyone know why it's like that?  Was it a decision by Apple to rurn it off for 'non-official' languages and keyboards?  It was obvious that iOS was building up a dictionary of commonly used words, since I hada merely to correct a single word about 3-4 times before it picked it up and offered the correct substitute.

My only concern is why this stopped working completely for the Icelandic language with iOS 4. Was that a concious design on Apple's part or a mistake?
It looks to me from the specs like Apple never officially offered autocorrection for Icelandic in iOS 3, so it is hard to answer  that question.   I don't have anything with that version still on it to test whether it was nonetheless present for some reason as you say.
In iOS 3, the specs indicate these keyboards had no autocorrection provided yet:  Estonian, Hungarian, Icelandic, Latvian, Flemish
Currently, the specs indicate these keyboards have no autocorrection provided yet: Bulgarian, Icelandic, Macedonian, Serbian, Tibetan.

  • How can I change my auto-correction language from english to french?

My system language is english, so all the default language is also in english
but how can I change the auto-correction language from english to french and without changing the menu language?
    Message was edited by: Marixomia

It's just, I want to change my spelling checker from english to french, that when I type some words in wrong order or miss some, I can know that.
For now, when I type in french, almost every words are underlined by the red lines...

  • Can I have several auto-correct dictionaries on my iPhone?

I write from my iPhone in 4 different languages. The main language is german. So when I make mistakes, it easily corrects them because I have auto-correct enabled.
Now when I type in french for example, I can't even write a simple sentence because it doesn't recognize any of the words and it won't stop suggesting other words instead. So I have to click on the little "X" everytime, which is really annoying when you have to do it for each word.
Is there any way I can add multiple dictionaries?
I tried adding more keyboards and stuff like that, but it didn't help.
    It's really important! Thanks guys

    Thanks this helped me!
I only just noticed how to switch between the keyboards (on the little world icon -- I always thought this is just for Emoji, but in the end, it's counted as a keyboard as well).
    And yes it works indeed.
Now however I have another little problem.
Some of the letters and symbols are on different places in the different keyboards. I can only write with a german keyboard! Is there no possibilty of having auto-correct for all languages I wish to have, but to keep the german QWERTZ keyboard?
On my iMac I use a german keyboard as well, but it doesn't stop me from writing in other languages. And the system recognizes if I write in english, french, etc. and adapts the auto-correct feature to this!
If there's a solution for this, it would be perfect
    And thank you sir!

  • How can I write in French without being auto-corrected to English?

Before moving to Canada, I was able to write in French and even had auto-correct in that language, as well as in English. I can't understand why this possibility is now disabled, Canada being - at least in theory - a bilingual country.

Surely you can still write in French, right?
For the spell check, go to system preferences/language & text/text/spelling and set it to French.  In the Pages app, you have to do this in Inspector > Text > More > Language.  In MS Office, you have to use their own settings -- check their Help.

  • Auto-correct Greek language

Hello. I am Greek. Recently our Greek distributor made a custom Greek dictionary for mac os x.
This dictionary works great in any application in the mac os x. The question, though, is why I cannot make it work in iwork '09. I choose the language from inspector, but it doesn't support auto-correction. Is there a way in which I can manually select that every mistyped work is substitued by the first suggestion ?? The dictionary has suggestions and spelling check, but not auto-correction... It' crazy !

I know of another Greek dictionary, no idea if it is better.

  • Disable "LOL"  Auto-Correct on iPhone 3G

Is there any way to make the iPhone learn to stop changing lol to LOL? The auto-correct feature on the iPhone is phenomenal; however, typing lol in a conversation makes auto-correct change it to LOL always which, to be gentle, makes it sound really annoying. I know you can press the little "x" button above the suggestion, but it becomes cumbersome to press every time -- especially if you text as fast as I do (and use "lol" as much as I do..). Yeah people have suggested use "haha"...but it's not the same....
    Any suggestions?

It would seem the iPhone doesn't learn words for me anymoe and when I type "lol" it just automatically changes it to "LOL" and doesn't pop up with the suggestion of "LOL" with the X so I can cancel it. It now just changes it to "LOL" when I hit the space bar with no options not to do it, nor does it appear I can teach the iPhone new words now. I have no idea why.

  • Iphone 3G auto correction

So, for the most part the auto correction and spell check on my phone is fantastic! It figures out and learns words amazingly!!! My biggest problem is that I live in Maryland, abbreviated MD, and when I type it in, it consistently tries to change it to MS. Sooo annoying Anything I can do?

Do most smart phones have the ability to turn off the auto-correction? It's really annoying. Maybe in the next update we will get the push function ability with the apps we were promised. The AIM one was promised for September and we still don't have it. I just rewatched the keynote that talked me into buying the 3G and those promises have not been kept No the auto-correction wasn't one of them
    Disappointed.

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • Switch off Auto Correct?

    Hi,
Are there any possible way to switch off the auto correct?? It`s so annoying for a non english user, whose language is not supported by iphone.

To me it seems that there was a complete reset and also a change to the dictionary. I'm afraid to say, but the change for me was definitely to the worse: apart from really annoying auto corrections like the .de -> .es thing, now the dictionary very often suggests phantasy words that don't exist. Whatever algorithm may be behind this, I would really like to opt out at this point. My best example: the VERY common word 'oder' (english: or) is changed to 'öder' - which to my knowledge is not a German word and cannot come from me mistyping something, as the umlaut 'ö' is hidden behind the 'o' button and needs to be held for a second or so and then explicitly chosen. that is nothing that may have happend by accident.
As you can imagine, the word 'oder' shows up pretty often and I simply don't believe that the 'learning process' as described above really works, as it consistently keeps 'correcting' a word that definitely HAS TO BE in the dictionary into something that doesn't even exist. Unbelievable!
Please help, Apple - I already wish back the first version of the dictionary which also was far from perfect but way better than this new 'gibberish machine'!

  • Can I disable auto correct for space only?

A few iOS updates ago Apple changed auto correct behavior to replace letters on the bottom row with space when it sees fit. That makes it an absolute pain to use when typing in Swedish as many words are created by concatenating words without any space in between. Therefore I want to disable that feature of auto correct but use it for other cases. Is that possible? If not, Apple, please change it back! At least for Swedish (and other relevant languages).

    Not possble.

  • Text auto-correct grabbing words from gmail / etc.

I'm not sure if this is a Gingerbread issue, but this is a problem that I was introduced to when I got my Xperia PLAY.
The on-screen QWERTY keyboard lends itself to frequent typos.  Since I started using the Xperia, the auto-correct dictionary has been automatically synced and populated with various words that it apparently grabbed out of my gmail, email, contacts, address book, or elsewhere.   This includes names, segments of email addresses, already misspelled words, etc.
This has made the auto-correct function useless on my phone, and makes text messaging a convoluted and futile chore that' I'd simply rather not do.
For example, when I'm trying to send a text to someone asking them, "what time?"  -- I commonly typo "time" as "timr."
Now, auto-correct on my Xperia always wants to change "timr" into "TimeBomb4321" -- which is a segment of an email address out of my address book.
And, there's apparently no way to turn this off.
There's no way to toggle this under "Accounts & sync."
"User Dictionary" under Settings only includes words that I have manually added to it.
    HOW DO I FIX THIS???

    Hi chuckk,
I understand the importance of having a streamlined text experience.  I would suggest deleting some of the auto-saved words from the dictionary. Settings>Language & Keyboard>User Dictionary.  Press on hold the word you no longer want and the select delete.  I am hopeful this information is helpful.  Please let me know if you need further assistance.
