Java 1.5 skins, GTK, Mac, ect on Windows XP

Greetings all,
I had a quick question about some of the newer skins in java. Most of our users run on Windows XP and they wanted to use some of the newer skins in Java. Currently we have Metal, Motif, and Windows to choose from but I wanted to add Mac and GTK and make the Windows 2000 version of the Windows skin available. I had assumed that all skins would be available on all platforms (since they work in Swing and its crossplatform) but when I tried to load the GTK skin on my Windows 2000 dev system it couldn't fin the class "com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel". Are some skins not included for some platforms? Also from what If read, if you are on Windows XP and you load the Windows skin it looks like Windows XP. Is it postsible to make the skin look like 'classic' windows in XP or the XP skin in Windows 2000?
Thanks,
Eudaemon

It's not called skin, call it LookAndFeel
you can get the installed look and feel on the system using the javaw.swing.UIanager static methods, but I think they aren't cross-platform, since Windows LookAndFeel uses some libraries into Windows and so on, if they available, so why the method getInsalledLookAndFeel() doesn't return them? maybe I'm right or maybe there is a way to install a LookAndFeel independently!

  • TS3489 Can the older version of Java be restored to the Mac OS X 10.4.11?  I have a new MacBook, but I like using my older desktop model for certain things.

Although I have a new MacBook,  I also have an older desktop Mac OS X 10.4.11 (which I still use) that just recently "stated" the older Java plug-in has been removed and the newer version needs to be installed.  The Mac OS X 10.4.11 doe not appear to be compatible with the updated version of Java.   Prior to this week, my grandchildren have been able to play some online early childhood games with this computer and I have been able to watch the occasional YouTube video.  Can the older version of Java be restored to the Mac OS X 10.4.11?

I'm not familiar enough with the Mac to know where your history is. Hopefully another Mac user can chime in.

  • Using Java SE 6 with Java FX 2.2 on Mac OS X

    Hello,
Has anyone tried using Java SE 6 with JavaFX 2.2 on Mac OS X?
JavaFX 2.2 System Requirements doc states that "For Mac OS X, use Java SE 7 Update 6 for Mac OS X. JavaFX 2.2 has not been formally tested with Apple's Java SE 6 implementation for Mac OS and support is offered only when used with Java SE 7 Update 6 or later.".
So I guess that means Java SE 6 may or may not work well with JavaFX 2.2 on Mac.
For some 'bugs' in my app, they simply don't exist if I switch from Java 7 to Java 6?
One such bug is mentioned in this thread: Re: Unable to play mp3 files with non-English alphabets/characters in the name
Can people with experiences in this area please share your thoughts?
Has Oracle done additional Java SE 6 and JavaFX 2.2 compatibility testings since the JavaFX 2.2 System Requirements doc was published (http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/system_requirements_2-2/jfxpub-system_requirements_2-2.htm)?
    Thanks.

Java 6 on Mac is not supported officially and not going to be supported.
Standalone JavaFX app might work as JDK 6 on Mac was used as dev platform before JDK 7 on Mac became available.
But this was mostly on older Mac OS X version (up to 10.6) and you may easily hit something that was fixed in Java 7 to support JavaFX better.
Webstart/Plugin will not work. You need JRE 7 from Oracle.

    hi,
you may get some idea from below lines
I changed the compiler complience level to 1.4 and deployed the application using jdk1.4. However the error was still there. When basis team checked the development config for PCUI_GP, it was sitting on SP03 which they then updated and the problem was fixed. Now I am getting a java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError on a different wd componet.
    Thanks !

Is following message due to 'Java' setting left unchecked?
Mac OSX supportsUser Authentication Mechanism (UAM) plug - ins from other manufacturers to control access to servers. To use a UAM, copy the plug - in to: Library/ Filesystems/ AppleShare/ Authenti

Man that is an ancient message.
The last time I saw that was using Mac clients connected to a Microsoft (Windows) Server running 'Services for Macintosh' which included the ability to act as an AppleShare compatible file server. Because Microsoft have a different security system for defining accounts which includes the 'domain' as well as username, the standard Mac AFP client did not know how to send that information.
Therefore Apple made it possible to installed a plugin in the form of a UAM or User Authentication Mechanism which added the ability to send this information to login to the fileserver.
    See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/101747
However Microsoft have long discontinued 'Services for Macintosh' and now the only way for a Mac to connect to a standard Windows Server is via SMB not AFP. I don't believe this plugin is available to download anymore.

  • Sun Java System Application Server for Mac OS X ?

    hi everybody.
does anybody know if (any given date ?) sun is planning to offer a distribution of its sun java system application server for mac os x ? or even better: any ideas on how to install a currently available version on mac os x 10.4 ? the linux bin seems not to be readable.
thank you very much in advance, folks.
    and have a nice day
    andre from berlin, germany

As you noticed, standalone MacOS distribution of application server is currently not available, but what you can do is to download NetBeans with J2EE bundle or Creator (for free) and install bundled Application Server on this platform. Download URLs are:
    http://www.netbeans.info/downloads/download.php?type=4.1
    (NetBeans/J2EE cobundle)
    http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/devtools/free/
    (Creator)
Also, you can install and run Glassfish (which is open-source version of upcoming Application Server 9.0) on MacOS X:

  • HT5045 Is there a way to install older versions of Java, like Java 6 Update 26 on Mac OS X 10.7 ?

We have an application that worked fine on Java 6 Update 26. Update 29 broke the application. Even though we have fixed the problem, for people using older versions of the application, there is no recourse, if they have upgraded their OS to 10.7. So, is there a way to install Java 6 Update 26 on Mac OS X 10.7 ?

    Hello,
I have a client that just started working remotely and needs to do payroll via her Mac OS X 10.7.5 system via a web browser. The payroll system appears to be ADP/Kronos as far as I can tell. We first tried using Safari and it said the plugin was missing so we downloaded the latest Java and installed. When we tried to run it dumped the following error. (see below)
At this point we decided to try Firefox and rather than a dump we found the message Java 1.6.0_07 required.
At this point we went hunting for an older version of Java and did find one only to be told if was specifically for OS X 10.5.x. My client is running OS X 10.7.5.
I have other clients running Windows that have multiple (older) versions of Java installed including 4, 5 and 6 all on one machine so I'm not sure if this is possible on Mac OS X or not.
Note I am not in charge of the payroll system and have no way of updating that side of things. I may recommend that my client contact her internal Help Desk or revert to using a Windows based system as I know for sure that would be capable of handling these requirements.
    Thanks, Jason

This is a User-to-User forum.  We do not have any knowledge into what Apple will or will not do.
However, based on past history, it is unlikely Apple will invest anything except critical security updates into Mac OS X 10.5.  I could be wrong.
If you really REALLY need Java 1.6 on your Mac, you should consider upgrading to a newer version of Mac OS X.

Any ideas how I can fix this?
    Thanks,
    GK

After doing some research, I still cannot fix this problem.
I Build the applet on Mac OS X using netbeans 6.7.1, with Java 6 (64-bit, there is no Java 6 - 32 Bit on Mac OS X)
When I run the applet on safari or firefox on Mac OS X, The console says running on Java 5. (Although the properties have been changed in Mac OS X /Utilities/Java Preferences)
I have been struggling with no end in site, for this issue.
I was able to get the Applet working by reverting to Java 5 and using the Java Swing jar from Java.net. But I still want to be able to just use Java 6 in Mac OS X. (I can't use the GUI Builder in netbeans with the separate swing jar).
    ANY HELP please.

  • Java dosnt work on my mac ?

please can someone help me, i've downloaded java on my macbook, and everytime im trying to visit a site i cant !!! ehats seems the problem here ??

It's not a quick solution, but you could reinstall Lion to get the Java Preferences back on your Mac. Or, if you have the Lion installer set aside on an external drive, you can do it this way.
    1) Right click on the Lion installer and choose "Show Package Contents"
    2) Open Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image file InstallESD.dmg
    3) Open the folder Packages. Double click the installer package JavaEssentials.pkg
    4) Follow the usual steps to install an application.

  • Execution of Java Native Process slow in Mac OS X

    Hi,
I'm having some performance issues when executing an java native process on Mac OS X. I am developping an application in AIR that searches for people in the ldap of our organisation. It has to be usable both on Mac as on Windows. When I execute my app on windows, the search process takes about 2-3 seconds. However, when I try to execute it on mac, the search process takes about 6-8 seconds. This is a bit to long to make it usable.
Has anybody encountered this problem as well and does anyone know what the problem can be?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Ronald,
Have you tried benchmarking your java process without the inclusion of AIR?  If so, did you find a difference which points to AIR being a culprit for the performance hit?
I'd be very interested in trying this out.  If you could provide me with a sample project that illustrates the slow down on Mac, I'll take a look right away.  Please feel free to contact me via private message on the forum or at [email protected] if you'd like to take this offline.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • I brought my itunes library onto a mac from a windows machine and now i have two separate libraries.  How can I merge them?

I moved to Mac from a Windows machine where I had downloaded all of my CDs into iTunes.  When I got my Mac it only put my purchased items into my library.  So I merged my windows library and it created a whole new user account with that on it.  I now have two libraries and can only sync music with one account or I lose all of my imported CDs.  Help!  How do I merge them.

The easiest way is to get both computers on your home network and copy the files over the network. It's easier than you think
    Check this earlier thread:
[How do I move my itunes library to new computer|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7937172&#7937172]
That thread mentions Target Disk Mode, which won't help moving from a PC to a Mac. But you can use file sharing to copy the files.
As the articles all say: don't forget to de-authorize your PC before you get rid of it.
