Java Development Kit Choice

Hi all,
I'm in a situation where I have to make a decision on which Java DK should be installed on multiple computers in an educational setting. I want the students to use a text editor+command prompt to learn, but it would be nice to have the option to use an IDE later on, especially for students with more experience.
My question is, if we are going to be predominantly using the text editor+command prompt combination, is there any disadvantage besides using more disk space to installing the "JDK 6 Update 7 with NetBeans" versus simply "JDK 6 Update 7".
Thanks for your help!

My question is, if we are going to be predominantly using the text editor+command prompt combination, is there any disadvantage besides using more disk space to installing the "JDK 6 Update 7 with NetBeans" versus simply "JDK 6 Update 7".By installing the combination ( JDK plus NetBeans) you cause tighter linking between the two, and the potential for more installation problems. It used to be (and may have now changed) that you couldn't update one of the two when the combination wsa installed - it required both be replaced.
I always install the Java JDK version I want, and then install the NB version I want, separately.

  • How to install Java Development kit on RHEL 4.0 workstation

    Hi Guys,
I'm new to java and not able to install java development kit on RHEL 4.0 system.
I got tzupdater.jar file and confused what to do with it so that i acn succesfully use my JDK.

Simply go here and download the version you want (if you know how to use rpm, then get the rpm version, if not get the self extracting executable form). Then install by either using rpm or simply changing the mode of the downloaded file to make it executable and execute it.
    This is not rocket science.

  • ZAC looks for Java Development kit

Is it true that ZAC needs Java Developmement kit installed on the client?
Because my ZAC client got the following error:
    overallfound JAVA_HOME for JavaSoft VM: D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3
couldn't load Sun VM: 'Sun VM libraries do not exist/cannot be loaded in
    JAVA_HO
    ME D:\Program Files\JavaSoft\JRE\1.3\bin\javai.dll'
Cannot load a suitable Java VM: error cannot load VM with order preference
    'S',
    exiting
When I reinstall JDK it is okay. When I rename the registry key 'Java
Development Kit' to something else it stop working again. Rename it back
    makes it works.
But I don't know why ZAC need JDK since I only want end user install JRE
    instead.
    Thanks.

I searched on the internet and many people says: Java Development Kit is under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and You don't can to distribute your programs compiled with Java Development Kit as a commercial software or to sell a product written in javaThey are wrong. The license of the software only governs how you may use it and what you can do with its source code. It does not restrict what you can do with the things you build with it (as long as you don't use parts of the JDK itself in your product)
, You need a business license if you want to sell a product written in java, I mean: You must to buy: Java for Business JDK/JRE. This information is true? No.
[Java for Business|http://www.sun.com/software/javaforbusiness/index.jsp] is a program by Sun/Oracle that allows you to buy support for the JDK. For example it allows you to use (and be supported with) the JDK 1.4.2, which is otherwise at its end-of-life.
You don't need to buy that if you just want to build and sell software using the JDK.

  • Java Development Kit (aka JDK) on Intel Mac ?

    Hello,
I'm considering seriously about buying an iMac Core Duo. I found most of the information I needed.
However, I didn't found anything about the JDK. I'm using Netbeans quite often, so I want to be sure I'll be able to use it.
Is there a JDK delivered with MacOSX for Intel, and which version is it ? I assume that there is a JDK, but I want to be sure before buying this machine.

  • Installing java development kit

I have a fair amount of experience with java on machines at the university I attend, but am a little baffled as to how to install or what to install on my windows machine at home. I have installed both J2EE and the latest JDK successfully, but when I try to run the compiler javac in a command line, I am told that the command doesn't exist.
The J2EE documentation doesn't say anything about this and I can't find where the JDK 5.o is installed. Can someone steer me in the right direction? Sun's development environment packaging is very confusing.
    Thanks,
    Mike

The Installation Instructions for the Java 5 JDK explain what the SDK installs, where it installs it, and how to set Windows' PATH to include the various Java tools. A link to this document is immediately below the link you clicked to download the JDK. You should read it.
None of this has anything to do with the J2EE product.

  • Java Development Kit Help

I have installed the JDK version 1.0 from a cd-rom as i am unable to download the J2SE from the web site. I have no trouble compiling and runing very simple programs but i need to use the file EasyIn.java from Charatan and Kans for some of my programs. However i am unable to compile the EasyIn.java file and get 10 errors, so i don't get the EasyIn.class. I think i need to download some additional classes from this web site but i'm not sure what exactly. Any help would be very gratefuly received!
    Thanks
    Allan

JDK version 1.0? That version is at least 100 years old! Find a place which has a good internet connection and download Java 1.4.1 or buy a book which has a CD included with a newer Java version.

  • Does the latest MacBook Air OS come with  Java Development Kit, version 1.6?

I need to purchase a laptop  to use for an online Java class.  The website I was given to download JDK 1.6 does not include a download for Mac OS.  I have heard that JDK 1.6 is part of Mountain Lion.  Can anyone confirm that, and if so, how is it accessed?  Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Java doesn't come with Mac OS X since the Lion release, so you will have to install Java manually after setting up the MacBook.
You just have to install Java 6 from Apple > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572

  • How do I get to the latest edition of the Java development kit in Win Vista

Is it only accessible from the command prompt in DOS, or is it in some folder I can get to from the start menu or on my desktop?

Command prompt. You can "get to" the libraries and the JVM in the sense that applications that need them can use them, but there isn't a GUI component, so you can't launch it in the way that you might launch a browser or something.

    Please help,
    I am new to Java.
I want to develop java programs.
I have Linux, (mandarake flavour) installed on my
    computer.
I know that there are diffent linux flavors.
I have to the development kit download at:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/download.html
    the page has downloads for
    Windows (U.S. English only) N/A
    Windows (all languages, including English)
    Linux Red Hat shell script
    Linux GNUZIP Tar shell script
    SolarisTM SPARCTM 32-bit binary
    Solaris Intel tar.Z N/A
    Installation Instructions
Does this mean that I cannot use java development kit
    for my Linux version?????
If I can I guess with the download it will tell me how
to do installation for Linux? (I know sometimes only
provide installation for Linux)The JDK has been rename J2SE (ie J2SE is the development kit).

  • Development kit which includes the javax.servlet package

Which java development kit(s) contain the javax.servlet package.v I can't seem to find one. Thanks

You might want to ask this on the Java forum - but if you want to run a servlet you need a Java EE server - something like Glassfish or WebLogic or Tomcat.
    The Java forums are here:
    https://forums.oracle.com/forums/category.jspa?categoryID=285
Right now you are in the JDeveloper forum - and by the way, if you download JDeveloper you'll get everything you need to develop and test run your servlet.

  • Downloading the java devoloper kit

Hi i am a high school student who is learning java. I have been trying for a very long time to download the java developer kit so that i can work on some of my programs at home instead of just at school. Everything that i compile comes up with no errors but when i try to execute my programs i get the "Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError" error. I have done everything that the online instructions tell me to do. If you could help me i would very much appreciate it.

i am assuming you know how to install anyways after installing you need to know where your j2sdk1.4.2_12 folder is. just for instance lets assume you have it in c drive. go to start and then run command prompt window. enter cmd. you should have a path something like this
    c:\documents and settings\chris
    well do this first
    cd..
after that you will have c:\\documents and settings
well do the same thing one last time so then you are in your c:\
    cd..
now you will have the screen something like this
    C:\
i am assuming your j2sdk folder is in c drive so you will do this next
    cd j2sdk1.4.2_12 (then press enter)
now you will see your command prompt like this
    c:\j2sdk1.4.2_12
then just type one last command.
    cd bin
now your command prompt looks like this
    c:\j2sdk1.4.2_12\bin
Thats it BOYyYyyyYyy You got it. The next thing you need to do is type your code in a notepad and make sure MAKE SURE YOU SAVE IT IN THE BIN FOLDER WHICH IS IN J2SDK1.4.2_12 and save it as a .java file e.g (HelloWorldApp.java) in the bin folder.
Now go to your command prompt i hope it is still in bin directory
    type this
    javac HelloWorldApp.java
    no errors HURRAY !!!!
    then type java HelloWorldApp
    Have fun BoYyYyyYy

  • Java Card Kit - development environment

    Hello!
I need to upgrade to the latest Java Card Kit, because I need some of the classes in javacardx.framework, which is not supported by version 2.2.1.
But some problems arises when I'm trying to use version 2.2.2
    1) It requires jdk1.5. Ok, no problem (ehh)
    2) I'm using eclipseME 1.6.0. This requires jdk 1.4.2.
    3) I downloaded WTK2.5 which supports jdk 1.5, but I cannot get this to work properly. This is the error output of WTK when my application tries to connect to the running cref-simulator:
java.io.IOException: error 10054 during TCP read
I have not found a solution for this problem yet. But my question is:
What is the optimal development environment for java card 2.2.2? What kind of MIDlet-emulator and which version are people using together with java card 2.2.2? Is there a eclipse plugin that supports jdk 1.5?
    Regards
    Haavard

Only cref can create and use EEPROM images.
You do not communicate with cref via SATSA apdu.... In emulation environment APDU commands are forwarded via satsa-apduio.jar to any process which can accept these commands. It's a pity but you just cannot replace satsa-apduio.jar with apduio.jar from JCDK 2.2.2 (which uses T=0 by default).
As for my proxy - it's not necessary to include it in your project - it's just an utility to accept T=0 APDU and forward them to smart-card. I think there's need to add new functionality - forwarding T=0 APDUs to other process which accepts T=1. I think it will solve your problem.
