Ted I can see that the years of programming and answering inane questions have made you bitter and twisted, so I shall forget your abuse. And I would say why bother to reply if a stupid question annoys you? It may be stupid to you but I obviously couldnt find the answer easily!
I cant prove how long I searched so I wont even try and quantify it, and besides whats the point? My reason for asking for the API's location is because I am the kind of person who likes to solve their own problems, hence why I want the API and also why I continued searching for the API after I had posted the question.

I am doing some project of migration, and I need some tools to convert from windows help file (chm) to java help file.
Anyone has some experience of that?
If not possible, what's the fastest way to do the conversion?

You don't mention what format the source files are in, so I'm assuming that you only have access to the actual .chm files and not whatever those were created from. Given that, you'll need a tool that is capable of backward converting Help output into some source format, and then converting that to JavaHelp. I don't know of anything that would convert directly from .chm to JavaHelp.
I believe that RoboHelp is capable of taking Window Help output and converting it backwards to source, and it is also supports JavaHelp, so this would be one tool to investigate.
HelpBreeze is another tool that supports both formats and is also a lot cheaper that RoboHelp.
I apologize for not having first-hand experience with either of these. We currently use a CMS tool, AuthorIT, to single source publish to JavaHelp and other outputs.

How can I open help file (HTML or .chm) from Java Web Start (new to JAVA)

Im trying to open the help file of my application.
When trying to access the help file from the GUI (pressing F1 for launching the help file), I'm geting the an error, something like:
"Can't show help URL: jar:file:C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P7001\DMwebstart\RMjar-name!/com/resources/helpFiles/MyHelpFile.html"
It seems that the file which is packed in a jar, was downloaded to the Java Web Start cache directory:
C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\javaws\cache\http\Dlocalhost\P7001\DMwebstart
The code which is activated when launching the help file is:

The function "RuntimeUtil.launchFile" knows how to launch any file in its default application, and indeed it does launches the html, when giving it an absolute path to the file on my PC, as "C:\Helpfiles\MyHelpFile.html" as such:

The application is going to be deployed on a Customer PC. How can I access the html file from the code, with a relative path and not its absolute path on the customer pc, which I can't know?
I found these restrictions regarding web start:

*Rule 1: Java Archives only. No loose files.* All your resources have to be packaged in Java Archives (jar) if you want to have
them delivered to the user's machine and kept up-to-date automatically by Java Web Start.
*Rule 2: No file paths.* You can't use absolute or relative file paths to locate your
jars holding your resources (e.g. <code>jar:file:///c:/java/jws/.cache/resources.jar</code>).
Absolute file paths won't work because you never know where Java Web Start
will put your jar on the user's machine. Relative file paths won't work because Java Web Start

and every JNLP client implementation has the right to mangle your names
in a different way and you, therefore, can't predict the name with

Please advise (I'm new to Java and Web Start).
BTW, I'm working with IntelliJ IDEA 5.0.

How to bundle java help class into jar file ?

I have some package in my project, with which I have a java help jar file as classpath, when I run my project, I need the jh.jar file in directory /jar/jh.jar.
Now, I bundled all my class packages into a jar file, my.jar, together with the /jar directory. When i run my jar file with command:
java -jar my.jar
It tells me couldn't find javahelp class.
What shall I do? How can I create my jar file with the jh.jar?

I think you'd be better off just adding the jh.jar as
a classpath argument and running it like that:
java -classpath /myjavalibdir/jh.jar -jar myjar.jar
...otherwise you're stepping into redistribution of
binary issues licensing-wise. That won't work either; when you run java with the -jar option, it ignores both the -classpath option and the CLASSPATH environment variable. However, it will see jh.jar automatically if you put it in the <path-to-java>/jre/lib/ext directory. But for distribution purposes, it might be simpler just to combime the contents of jh.jar into myjar.jar (if you use Ant, its <jar> task makes that very easy). Or, you can just run it this way:java -classpath myjar.jar;jar/jh.jar MyMainClassBTW, I don't think redistribution is a problem; otherwise how anyone even use JavaHelp?

would you tell me how can i run a help.chm file using java code. i am trign this but no luck.
first try

The second address given to that function, does it relate to the class that its being called from? cause i've got
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("C:\\WINDOWS\\hh.exe .\\HelpFile_9_3.chm" );where HelpFile_9_3 is in the same folder as my class, but it won't work. Can anyone help?
Also, can you search within a chm file from Java? If I get that above code working, I presume it'll open the help file to the main page. I'd like to search within that document for a word or phrase - possible?

CHM help file and java

is there any way to open a chm help file using java (so that the help viewer starts up)? this program will probably display a chm if it's running on a windows machine and in html if not

Useing RunTime Class in Java you can opern the CHM help file using the hh.exe
The hh.exe will be present in the windows directory.
See if this helps.
Your doubts are not related directly to JNI.

Help on java.io.File

I need to know the time stamp of a file like "HelloWorld.java" or "ReadMe.txt".
-My application requires to delete all those ".txt" files that's One-Day old. How will I know if that file is 1 day old????
-cant find any methods on java.io.File in regards with that.

Again, here's my problem, i dont know what's wrong with my code but everytime I check for a file, the entire date (year, month, day, hour,min, sec) is completely dead wrong...
it always prints the year into 1970 instead of 2006...

Need help for how to putting arabic content in java properties file

Hi all,
we have to support arabic in Java application.
For that we are using java propeties file where key and value pair is used.
In the Microsoft excel sheet arabic content is coming properly from right to left direction.
When same thing is copied and paste in java properties file contents direction is reversed that is it is coming from left to right as in english.
Please help how to put the arabic contents in propeties file

So in terms discussion.
First I would suggest that you get a hex editor and validate exactly what is in the properties file. It appears to me that you are using one or more editors that are adjusting the display for you and thus that makes it hard to determine where the problem is. A hex editor should not adjust the display. Although even then you might want to right a simple java app and have it read bytes and print them just to validate that the hex editor isn't doing something.
Only after you are exactly sure how the bytes appear in the file then proceed with other steps.
For the java GUI only test the following.
1. Properties file has it left to right then the java GUI displays it correctly right to left or not?
2. Properties file has it right to left then the java GUI displays it correctly right to left or not?
Myself I would expect that 2 should be the correct way to implement this. However that is dependent upon you correctly invoking the api as well. So if 2 is not working then you might want to look at the api. It might also have something to do with GUI display properties (of which I know even less.)

How to call .chm help file in java ?

and when i try to run

it says command not found. so what do i need to install to be able to run java .jar files through the CLI?

Open a Windows help file from a Java application

Help!!! Final project due Wednesday. Our project was to re-create the Windows 2k calculator, which we pretty well did, with the exception of accessing the help file. I think I am close but not sure how to deal with the compiled HTML files that Windows uses for its help utilities. The following code makes the calculator itself pop up.

Maybe I didn't understand your problem correctly.
If you just want to start the windows help with the calculator helpfile then your command should look like
"WINHLP32.EXE c:\windows\help\calc.hlp" and not "calc".

XSLT mapping with Java helper classes

I'm trying to implement a XSLT mapping to convert my request to a specific soap request message format for this I'm calling some methods from a java helper class. I have imported the jar file into the archives. When I tried to test the interface it keeps complaing there is some exception but doesn't give me the exact error. Has any one called any java helper classes with in XSLT mapping, if so I would appreciate if you could help me with this. Here is the code from xsl.

Getting all the members (variables, methods AND method bodies) of a java source file

For a project I want to programmatically get access to the members of java source file (member variables, methods etc) as well as to the source code of those members. My question is what is the best method for this? So far I have found the following methods:
Use AST's provided by the Java Source API and Java Tree API, as discussed in the following posts:

This has the disadvantage that the classes actually have to be compilable. When I look at the Netbeans Navigator view however, it provides me with a nicely formatted UI list, regardless of the "compilable" state of the class.
Thus I started looking at how to do this... The answer appears to be through the use of tools such as JavaCC: https://javacc.dev.java.net/

which are lexers and parsers of source code. However, since the Navigator panel already does this, couldn't I use part of this code to get me the list of variables and methods in a source file? Does the Navigator API help in this regard?
Another route seems to be through tools such as

which run on top of JavaCC if I am correct, and which has the ability to provide a clean view on your java code (or an XML view). However, BeautyJ does not seem to be too actively developed, and is only j2se1.4 compatible.
I hope someone can shed a light on the best way to go about what I want to achieve. Somebody already doing this?
