Java_home issue on Tomcat 4.1.X

I have a problem running Tomcat as a service in XP. Before, I could not get the index.jsp to load that comes with Tomcat. I disabled it as a service and added JAVA_HOME to the startup and shutdown bat files. Starting it from startup.bat, everything worked fine. I then switched back to a service, and it does not work right...I believe it cannot find javac.
What can I do to resolve this?

I uninstalled, and at the beginning of reinstall...I get this dialog :
Using Java Development Kit found in C:\J2SDK_Forte\jdk1.4.0\
The problem is...that directory doesn't exist...the problem with having multiple versions of java, is when you try to uninstall one...all hell breaks loose. Somewhere in my system it thinks that there is a Java install in this directory. The tomcat install won't give me the option to change the directory.
Any other ideas...maybe on how to get it to not think that C:\J2SDK_Forte\jdk1.4.0\ exists...

    I've been checking the following issue online for sometime but I just can't seem to figure what is wrong with the server setup. I've this very simple JSP page processing the form variables submitted to an action page which is another JSP page. Thecode segement in the target JSP is like this;

    }Whenever I try to use request.getParameter("XYZ") in the target page just like above, I get following error from Tomcat;

    Any ideas why this might be happening? I'vve tried the same code with Resin 2.x and Tomcat 5.5 , it works just fine. Do you think there is something missed with the Tomcat setup or the Tomcat version (4.0.6) on that specific server is no good?
    Any comments are greatly appreciated.

    Hi There,
    As you said using equals would not work as it should be a valid String in order for the eqauls function to work.
    Unfortuantely I can't access the Servlet created or the log files. It has crossed my mind too but this is a setup by the service provider and they don't let you nose into their business but they ahvedone something wrong with their system as far I can think.
    I've wanted to print the output to the web but when i use the request.getParameter it just creates the error.
    Java service is provided optional and as any optional service it is not well supported so I need to make them some pointers. So any more ideas?
    Cheers,

  • Issue with Tomcat 4.0.1 (not recieving proper mime type header)

    I have two environments running xsql servlets. One is a Red Had 7.2 box with jdk13 and Tomcat 4.0.1 running the jars in WEB-INF/lib directory of my test context. The other environment is a Solaris8 Netra box with the same version of the jdk and the same version of Tomcat. Everthing seems to work okay except for one thing... When I view an xml page on Solaris I get just the text in IE and on the Red Hat box I get the properly formatted xml. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue.

  • Deployment Issue with Tomcat 6

    Greetings everyone,
    I am developing a Web application using Eclipse, Systinet,Tomcat....
    I recently upgraded my application to use Tomcat 6 instead of Tomcat 5.5 and I encountered an issue that did not exist before. During the Tomcat Startup I get following "warning" message: "couldn't find deployment descriptor of dependant package".
    The error comes from the com.systinet.wasp.admin.PackageRepositoryImpl of systinet.
    What could be the reason for this kind of warning?
    Thanks in advance!

    I am also facing the same problem. I am using tomcat 6.0.14. Its not getting resolved even on restart of the server.

  • Issue with Tomcat + Struts  please help.

    I'm developing in Struts Action Framework using Tomcat 5.5.12 as server, Eclipse IDE with Exadel plugin for Struts development.
    My application right now only uses a single .jsp as my view component. This jsp, called index1.jsp uses <jsp:include page='body.jsp' /> to dynamically include the output generated by my application, in this case a jsp containing the body of the page.
    The problem is that whenever I'm testing my app, the jsp:include tag doesn't seem to find the dynamically generated html, but the ones that are already there... I always have to use the Exadel plugin "republish" feature and then it works..
    Any help will be much appreciated

    Well... sort of fixed it.  Apparently my system doesn't like editing images with a color depth of 16bit.  If I convert it down to 8 when I'm converting it from RAW, then it allows me to add layers... Is this normal?
    Thank you for your time,

    my configuration in the web.xml file is as follows;
    <Realm className="org.apache.catalina.realm.JDBCRealm" debug="99"
    driverName="sun.jdbc.odbc.JdbcOdbcDriver"
    connectionURL="jdbc:odbc:DSNname@host_string:1521:ORCL?user=user_name;password=pwd_name"
    userTable="chg_users" userNameCol="user_name" userCredCol="user_pass"
    userRoleTable="chg_users_roles" roleNameCol="role_name" />
    does the above appear incorrect? If so, specifically how?
    Thanks!

    connectionURL="jdbc:odbc:CATALINA"
    in this case, where is CATALINA supposedly pointing
    to a DB connection? I don't have mine set, save for
    maybe the classpath, but why would you point the
    connURL through jdbc:odbc to CATALINA?
    That is the name of a DNS. The ODBC shell (nothing to do with java) has DNS names. The shell uses the passed in name to look up the attributes associated with the name.
    If you were using a DNS-less name then you would have to specify ODBC driver (nothing to do with java) and the associated attributes for that driver in the connection string.
    I'm a little confused by this. Any explanation would
    be great, as I have a driver that is jdbc:odbc,
    rather than an exclusive Oracle driver.
    Well, I've got the ojdbc14_g.jar file. But that's not
    exclusively Oracle, correct? Just for JDBC with
    Oracle?
    A jdbc driver lives somewhere. The bridge driver lives in the Sun VM. The Oracle driver lives in a jar (current ones.)
    The bridge driver talks to ODBC (which is outside of java.)
    The oracle drivers talk to oracle databases.

  • RMI issue with Tomcat

    Hi All,
    I have an RMI system, that in command line works perfectly, as expected. However, I have transferred my Client to Servlet and am running it though Tomcat. Now when ever I try and invoke a remote method I receive an error message.
    The error is generated as a result of catch statement for the following:
    server = (Server)Naming.lookup(fullname);I know the Client code is being evaluated as it generates the HTML error message from the catch. Using a System.out.println and the Tomcat log files I caught the error and wrote it to a log file. It was as follows:

  • Installing SAP NW on RHEL 5.3 JAVA_HOME issues

    Hello,
    I have worked for weeks trying to get the java part of install done properly. I have completed linux install with all parameters set properly. Only one thing holding preinstall test -- JAVA_HOME settings. I am loading SAP in distributed environment (main setup with database on another system) on 64 bit IBM Xseries system. I downloaded java 1.4.2_22 (from SUN) per a SAP note but this package does not have 64 bit JRE. Marcus stated in another listing installers need to load java 5.0 but I am wondering which package. Can someone tell me exactly which packages I need to install to complete and pathway of install. I have completely uninstalled all java packages and rpm s.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

    root@linux ~# java -version
    java version "1.4.2"
    gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.1.2 20070626 (Red Hat 4.1.2-14)
    Yes - as you see this is GNU java, not Sun Java - and Gnu java is not supported for a SAPGUI installation.
    root@linux opt# java -jar PlatinGUI-Linux-710r6.jar
    you have to set JAVA_HOME to the root of where you installed it.
    so
    export JAVA_HOME=/opt/<path-you-installed>
    then edit your path:
    export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
    now "java -version" should output the Sun Java version.
    Markus
    Above is from another thread.
    When I installed java rpm installed to /opt/IBMJava2-amd64-142 folder.
    From above thread I learned to:
    export JAVA_HOME=/opt/IBMJava2-amd64-142
    then edit path:
    export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH    so I entered
    export PATH=/opt/IMBJava2-amd64-142/bin:$PATH
    is this correct? Am I suppose to replace last $PATH with something?
    I still get error on precheck about JAVA_HOME: Could not check
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Issues in looking up a ejb deployed on glassfish from tomcat.

    Hi all,
    I have followed the steps mentioned in the EJB FAQ in the glassfish site and was able to lookup a remote ejb deployed in glassfish from a standalone client.
    In case of standalone client, i set the appropriate jndi properties in the initial context as mentioned in the FAQ and added the 4 jars specified to the classpath of the application.
    It all worked perfectly well.
    But I attempted to do the same from a servlet running under tomcat.
    I set the appropriate jndi properties in the intial context and added 4 jars specified in the lib directory of the war file.
    But this did not turn out well and tomcat complained me with some servlet init errors.
    Then i searched through the web and found this posting from you:
    http://www.archivesat.com/GlassFish_Enterprise_JavaBeans_Developers/thread1399339.htm
    Then i created a folder called "shared/lib" under TOMCAT_HOME directory in my machine and ran the same example. Wow.....miraculously the application ran well.
    But i found that the "index.jsp" which i configured in the welcome file list does not appear now. But i was able to access the servlet without any problem. And the servlet was able to successfully lookup the ejb deployed in glassfish.
    Then i thought, let me try to access the ejb from a jsf application.
    Then i created a jsf application in netbeans 5.5.1 and tried to access the bean deployed in glassfish.
    (Note: the jsf application runs in tomcat 5.5.17 which is bundled with netbeans)

    Can you please help me.
    I've noticed that you were eagerly answering questions related to ejb lookup in many places.
    I feel there is some potential compatability issue between tomcat and glassfish...
    I request you to investigate on this and clarify the community with your response.

    database is Oracle 9i in which max procees are set as 1000
    i closed all database connections in all servlets/jsp pages .....still problem persits...
    some times ...my databse is giving exception ORA-00020: maximum number of processes (1000) exceeed...once i restarted tomcat every thing working...
    is there any thing need to be done from my end . to improve the performence......
    Plz share your to improve my application performence.....Thanks in advance

    sorry, but if your connections are not being returned to the pool, you are not closing your connections everywhere. Do you close your connections in finally clauses everywhere? Otherwise a thrown exception might prevent the connection from being closed.

    i closed all database connections in all servlets/jsp pagesAnd Statements? PreparedStatements? ResultSets?
    You may consider implementing a robust DAO/ORM instead of writing it on your own. Hibernate for example. I bet that your code is not written very well.

  • Could be a fix for Tomcat 6 issue

    Getting Eclipse 3.2, Tomcat 6.0 and JSF 1.2 playing together nicely is a task that is certainly not for the faint of heart. Tomcat 6 seems to have issues at the moment but I'm loathed to push too much of the blame on to it as generally Tomcat has been rock solid. The big problem is really with Eclipse. The WTP (Web Tools Platform) is not as good as it could be and doesn't currently support Tomcat 6. Fortunately there is a work around to fool Eclipse into thinking that Tomcat 6 is really an install of Tomcat 5.5.
    Running Tomcat 6 Under Eclipse
    Find the file org.eclipse.jst.server.tomcat.core_1.0.103.v20060904b.jar which lives in the plugins directory under the Eclipse install directory. Copy the file somewhere else and unzip it. Modify the file verifyInstall.properties so that the verify55install line looks like this:
    verify55install=bin/bootstrap.jar,conf,webapps
    Re-zip the files to create a jar with the same name as the one that you unzipped. Place the tweeked jar back in the Eclipse plugin directory and restart Eclipse. Configure a new Tomcat 5.5 instance but point it at a Tomcat 6 install.
    Installing JSF 1.2
    There is currently no myFaces version of JSF 1.2 so you are stuck with the RI from sun. Grab this and place it in the WEB-INF/lib directory. Update the web.xml file of you applicaiton so that it loads the faces servlet:
    <!-- Faces Servlet -->
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet</servlet-class>
    <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
    </servlet>
    <!-- Faces Servlet Mapping -->
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>Faces Servlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>*.jsf</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    When you come to fire up the applicaiton you may well receive this error message:
    java.lang.IllegalStateException: Application was not properly initialized at startup, could not find Factory:
    javax.faces.context.FacesContextFactory
    This is apparently due to some hot deploy issues with Tomcat. It would seem that Tomcat has a bit of a blind spot for configuring listener specified inside TLDs. Quite why sun release a RI that shows this bug up in the most widely used container is beyond me. The solution to this issue is to add the following listener to the web.xml file:
         <listener>
    <listener-class>
    com.sun.faces.config.ConfigureListener
    </listener-class>
    </listener>
    <!-- Listener implementation to handle web application lifecycle
    events -->
    <listener>
    <listener-class>
    com.sun.faces.application.WebappLifecycleListener
    </listener-class>
    </listener>
    That should be all that's required. I've noticed that Tomcat 6 seems to behave somewhat strangely under Eclipse. Hot deploy of JSPs doesn't work from Eclipse and Eclipse is unable to detect that Tomcat 6 is running - it always shows Tomcat 6 as starting. Some of the rendering of pages also seems to be strange but that could well be changes that I haven't yet discovered.

    10.4.3 is certainly not a fix - see the airport/RAM thread. Within 10 minutes of installing the update, the bug happened for the first time at work (had happened many times at home). I doubt calling tech support would add anything - there's no way they don't know about the issue. There's a cmd line option in a link in that other thread where you can tell tiger to only use 1024 MB, which will fix the problem without having to physically remove RAM, but keeping it at 1 GB is pretty much the only option. It's a major bummer to say the least.
