Is there a way for Java applications to be able to use the underlying networks QoS parameters?
You may wish to look at the new traffic class features in 1.4. A good place to start in the API may be the setTrafficClass() method in the "Socket" class.

WRT54GS network assistance needed! Help!
I really need some help understanding network terms. I just setup my WRT54GS using tips I collected from these forums. I changed the IP address to 192.168.2.1 and cloned the MAC address to my PC. My main PC has my DSL modem>WRT54>PC LAN which connects perfectly to the internet. This is where my problems/network understanding starts. I have SSID name and WEP security setup using the router. Other than internet none of my other 2 computers wireless (Laptop& a HTPC) are recognized for file/printer sharing amongst the entire group. All computers have file/printer sharing enabled. I have run the network setup wizards on the PC many times and named it differently each time for ID purposes. I enabled security on some and left others disabled, but no where on the PC can I find where these networks exist. In addition when I turn on my laptop I
find most of the networks I created as available connections. My main PC doesn’t see my linksys nor will find my HP Ethernet printer connected to the WRT54. Please help!Disable all the firewalls on the computer even the windows firewalls and make sure that the workgruop is same for all the computers.

Cisco Network Assistant, unable to add a switch
I have a network running some 20 switches, two controllers and many AP's. All the devices that should be able to connect to cisco network assistant can successfully. However there is one switch that will show in neighbours but will give the message of “unable to connect to device” when I try and add it to the topology.
As far as I can see the config is identically to all other similar switches in the network. I can telnet from a switch (management VLAN) to the switch in question. However when I try to ping or telnet from the PC running network assistant (different subnet) I am unsuccessful. However I can ping/telnet to all other cisco device from this PC.
The switch is a WS-C3560-48TS and I have included the config for firstly the switch in question and another switch of the same model and config that works correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

endThe switch configurations look pretty straightforward and mostly correct.
I notice that the problem switch has "ip routing" global command. Why is that necessary? You are only using it as a L2 switch, yes? If you use "ip routing" and have no routing process (ospf, eigrp, etc.) running you would need to add a static default route (ip route 0.0.0.0 etc.) and not use the "ip default-gateway" command. Otherwise the switch itself (the SVI) does not know how to leave the management VLAN routing-wise since it is the only L3 interface defined.
(I might also add "ip http authentication local" on each and I'd definitely disable telnet in favor of ssh) -

jacklingWell I've search google for a low level TCP api, but I came up with absolutely no results. So I guess the only way would be to write your own native API (using C/C++) and call this through the Java Native Interface.

Java networking library with RMI-like functionality?
Is anyone aware of a Java networking library, that provides RMI like functionality and TCP/IP with an intuitive API and minimal coding required? I'm working on a prototype, but I'm having difficulty getting Java's RMI functionality working through Netbeans, so while I'm prototyping I'm looking for alternatives so I can code more and frustrate less!

ThanksI gotta be honest with you here. I think you need to stop coding for now and get your requirements in hand with a better grasp on how network programming works.
Not being insulting here but your questions show your current knowledge level on the subject to be not really sufficient for success with whatever it is you want to do.
There is the networking tutorial available here http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/index.html but it might do you well to tell us exactly what you are trying to do. Are you trying to build an FTP client? Are you trying to build a whole client/server program of some sort?
Because everything now is very vague. You seem to be looking for protocols or API's between TCP and things like FTP for example and none exist because these sit directly on top of TCP. So you either deal directly with the Sockets or you deal with some library that deals with the protocol in question. There isn't an "in-between" layer here. -
Wrong Port Statistics in Cisco Network Assistant

I'm having some troubles with CNA (version 6.0). There's a few switches in the network that displays wrong information about sports activities/statistics. I've got some ports administratively down, without activity, however CNA is showing Tx and Rx rates, etc. I've already cleared counters from the application and from CLI too. If I do "show interface Gix/x/x" in the CLI, it returns results that I waited, but not in CNA, where it's showing wrong information. Moreover, some ports which should have activity and statistics, don't displays info. All rates and statistics shows 0 when I'd must see any number except 0.
I'm talking about a stack with 3 Catalyst 3750-X 48P.

When you are dealing with autonomous wireless access point, it's very common to have mutiple VLANs configured in the WAP, therefore you need a Trunk switch port.
You can also configure the trunk port to allow VLANs of your choice. -

Yes, Cisco Network Assistant is still free. You will need to register for a guest CCO account before you can download it though. You can register for a CCO login at http://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do.

Thank You!!!There are two options, Peer to Perr and client server.
With a P2P instant messenger, each user will need to know the IP address of another user to contact them. That isn't exactly pretty.
The client/server approach can be done in 2 ways. The first method is that when a user signs in, the messenger sends the user's IP address up to a server and also asks the server if anyone on the users 'buddy list' is signed in. When a user wants to IM another user, it requests the IP address off of the server and then connects over a predefined port.
The drawback of this configuration is that firewalls will stop the messenger from wroking.
The second client/server approach will have the server manage not only a mapping of users to IP's but will actually handle routing the messages. This is basically a Chat room implementation but with a thick client. Each client messenger will periodically pool the server for new messages. Once a new message arives, it will probably be most effecient if the client and the server will hold onto a constant connection until a certain time limit has expired (the conversation has 'ended').
Basically, the server (server meaning anyone listening for a connection such as someone listening for the phone to ring) uses this:

Socket s = ss.accept(); // actual communcations happen over the Socket s.The client (the one making the phone call) will look like this:

We've been replacing our 'old' Catalyst 3550 boxes with 3750 Switches, and since the web-interface on these are 'a bit lacking' in functionality(to say the least), we figured that CNA(downloaded latest version) would be just the thing...

Now, my PC is set up according to 'best practices' for a SECURE NETWORKED PC In an office environment.
In other words, my user doesn't have write access to any folder in the %Program Files% areas, and that's the way we like to keep it...
So, Who goofed up the software, and how do I get around it without compromising the security of my PC?That is NOT a solution.
The reason why a user shouldn't have write access to the \program files\ folder is that it contains EXECUTABLE BINARIES, which many virii likes to infect.
Moving the install to another folder and giving a user write access to that just moves the problem to another place.
What COULD help is a list of subfolders(which doesn't contain binaries or other easily-infected files) or files which the program needs to have write access to, or an updated version which stores its config data somewhere else... -
Network assistant launches every time I restart
Can anyone tell me why the network assistant launches every time I restart my computer? I am already connected to my wireless network so I'm not really sure why it needs to create a new location every time.

Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it. -

JoeWhat kind of advanced networking? RMI, Corba, SOAP, ...? Google for tutorials. Plain sockets? After you know the Java socket API you'll need to get into the fine details of TCP, UDP and IP which are mostly language independent.
There are also books; one is "Fundamental Networking in Java", the author of which regularly hangs in the Java socket programming forum. If you get his book you'll always have someone who can't possibly refuse to help you: "hey ejp, I read your book and I have this problem..." :-) -

Please I need your help, I installed Cisco Network Assistant 5.8 (9.1) for manage some catalyst switches as 2950, 2960, 2960S, 2960X, 3750X. I can manage all devices except WS-C2960X-24TS-LL model, I have following message from CNA: "Error: Connect Index: 26, Size:26". This device have same configuration for level 15 access as other devices with user name and password. the catalyst switch IOS version is 15.0(2)EX4
This problem is about either software or hardware? How can solve?

I know the product team monitor the Network Management Forum. If you post your question there, one of them may pick up on it.
The CNA support typically lags the new product release by about 4-6 months, sometimes longer depending on how well the hardware product release matches up with the network management product's latest release date. The 2960XR just started shipping in July 2013 so a good guess would be that CNA might support it in the next release (5.9?). That's just a guess though.
